Clean, small community park, located in heart of Amherst, behind the Amherst police station. Recently visited for a fire fly hike that was guided, by the NYS Parks Department; Catol Rodgers. Interesting facts learned on fireflies: they like leafy dark areas, eat slugs, and snails and really lite up the park. Paved trail, not very long, perfect for quick walk or hike to explore the many trees. Family, everyone friendly. read more

Walton Woods Park - Hiking Near Me - Amherst, New York

Went to this park with my son and his two children under eight years of age (7 & 5). It was the perfect length to get through without hearing the children complain that they were tired of walking. This is such a beautiful park to enjoy a nice walk, jog, a bike ride or to go fishing (no spots to play sports of any kind here). There are a couple small grassy areas you can sit with a blanket and have a small picnic, eat lunch or bring your own lawn chair and enjoy a book. Plenty of benches to sit down, relax and enjoy the view of the water. In addition, the trees provide lots of shaded areas to appreciate as you walk through the paved trail on a hot summer day. Lastly, there are a lot of droppings from the geese (the children were stressing about avoiding it). I didn't see a playground during my walk but there is a very nice playground available for the children in front of the library that is located adjacent to the park entrance - you'll see it. I used my GPS to get here and parked at the courthouse parking lot, there was a path to where the trail starts - in my photos. Bring bug spray and sunblock in the summer and enjoy a stroll after a good meal. Rated this park four stars because I would probably only come back to take a walk if I'm already in the area but there's nothing here you absolutely have to see if you were visiting Buffalo. However, the park is beautiful and serene. If there was more to do or picnic tables for families to sit and eat, I would give it five stars. read more

We parked at the library (which may be my next review they were super helpful) The entrance is at the back of the complex. You will see a bird trail sign :) Today was a great walk because all of the runoff water, just beautiful. Lots of paved pathways, so mud wasn't an issue. Many wildlife sightings! You need to be outside when it break 80 degrees in April in Buffalo. So while on the area, we went to Walton Woods. The heat felt like summer but the bare trees reminded us that it's barely spring. Walton Woods is a nice easy walk. Plenty of people were taking advantage of this today. There were several families spotted with strollers and tiny kids on tiny bikes, dog walkers, runners, bikers, and others just enjoying a stroll on a spring day. Hidden gem in Amherst, NY. Great place to stroll with your dog. Walk, jog, bike ride, roller blade. Smooth surface on the paved trail around three tree-lined, forested ponds. Nice to see the change of seasos here. The fall leaves are gorgeous right now in the third week of October. You can access it from the parking lot of the Audobon Library and senior center. Or, use the park lot of the Audubon community. It's a little hidden, get away when you want to be among nature. But not really very far from home and Northtowns. read more

Really beautiful park located behind the Amherst Police station/Amherst Senior Center and Audubon Library! The trails are well maintained and easily walkable as they are paved. You'll see lots of wild life - deer, geese, ducks, squirrels etc. Lake Audubon is easily seen throughout one of the trails that just loops around it. I finally managed to drag myself across the street where I work to take a walk here on lunch! My only regret is that I waited so long to check this beautiful hidden gem out! There is ample parking near the library & senior center and there are multiple different entrance points located all along the park connecting various residential streets to the park. I stumbled upon one of the entrances when walking through the neighborhood on my lunch break last week. The park is maintained pretty well with tons of different walking paths. There is also a playground, tennis courts, and basketball court tucked away in the corner of the park. This time of year the trails were covered in ducks & geese (and their poop!) so you just need to watch where you step. There were so many benches located all around the park so there are plenty of places to sit and enjoy the view or read a book. This is a NY birding trail so there were tons of birds to see. I managed to see a heron, a male blue jay, and lots of robins. I even got to see a mink scurry across the pathway in front of me! This was pretty busy around lunch time with lots of walkers and dog walkers. read more

Cute little park off of John James Audubon Pkwy. I used to work on the Audubon so I wish I had known about this place then! Nice walking paths, tons of foliage and a big pond. There were plenty of benches along the water, so I bet this is a popular spot for surrounding offices for a lunch break. I sure would take advantage of it! I parked in the lot by the Amherst Senior Center and found a path right away. It was a rainy day when I visited, so I didn't see too many animals, but a couple ducks crossed my path as I made my way around the pond. Definitely want to head back when the weather gets a bit nicer to see if I encounter more wildlife as it sounds like from other reviews it's pretty common to! Nice place to recenter and take a breather. read more

This is a great park to walk around; a large pond, lots of shade / trees. Even a a shaded playground off one of the smaller pathways. Lots of access points to the park / pathways, perhaps most convenient would be the parking lot by the Amherst Police Department. Bonus points for being next to the exceptional Audubon library. There is more to this park than meets the eye. A simple stroll around the main lake is absolutely delightful. Venture off to one of the nature trails, and it brings you into serenity. Take some of the spurs and you find gazebos and other lakes and the occasional hidden playground. All right in our backyard. Squirrels, deer, turtles, chipmunks, skunks, woodchucks, rabbits, voles, a broad variety of birds, and fish, this is a great little park and it is never crowded. read more

This place is great. I wish I came sooner. The address takes you to a cul-de-sac that's about a block away from an actual lot on Little Robin Road. You'll pass it on the way from one direction, and you'll see it from the other way before your phone directs you into the cul-de-sac. You'll see a gazebo ahead and a man made lake to the right of the path leading to the actual park. There's some paved paths and some dirt paths. If you take the path right and don't turn to follow the curve of the lake you will find a playground with lots of equipment including swings and a tire swing. Beyond that is a small basketball court with one net and a small tennis court with an open gate. Nobody was around today but maybe it's busier when school lets out. It was kind of cool seeing a tennis court in the middle of a wooded area. Technically there's homes just beyond the trees behind the court but it's easy enough to pretend. Speaking of homes, you will catch a glimpse of some amazing homes as you explore. I saw one with huge windows overlooking the park. Not the best for privacy, but what a view. Very scenic place with plenty of locations for photo ops. read more

I was looking for a new place to walk and actually found this trail on Yelp. It's close to the UB bike path but was much less busy. I loved all the ponds and the birds chirping - it was such a relaxing trail. Not too long, but you can make it longer by taking all the side paths. I think next time I might bring a picnic here. read more

Great hidden gem in Amherst! Paved and unpaved trails with a scenic lake and small playground. Great for walking, running, roller blading, dog walking, seeing squirrels and caterpillars, and more! The park has many well maintained, flat and paved trails surrounding a large lake, as well as some unpaved trails. I'm not sure how long the trails measure, but we did a mix of the paved and unpaved for about 1.75 miles. There were a few people also fishing in the lake. Easiest place to park would be in the Amherst Senior Center lot and enter the park there by the lake. It's also accessible by numerous paths connecting local neighborhoods to the park. read more

Nice, little walking area in Amherst. Not very large (I think it's about 1.5 miles), but it's all paved so you can easily walk it multiple times for an easy walk! There's even a nature trail which cuts through the park and there was lots of seers to see there! read more

The most peaceful park/lake. Feels like you stumbled upon a little hidden lake. It's great in all seasons but especially breathtaking in the fall. It's dog friendly and the path is paved so also great for biking and roller blading. You can also fish here. I love that they have benches around the lake in case you want to sit while you fish or bring a book to read. read more

Very nice park. The wildlife is so use to people they don't even run as you walk by. They have a few beautiful large ponds stocked with fish, there is a catch and release policy. Trails through the woods as well as alongside the ponds. read more

This was a nice park. It's in the Audubon neighborhood. Nice clean and well maintained walking trails. We saw a few deer while walking. There are a few small bodies of water. Part of the walk was near homes in Audubon community. Not a long walk, but definitely a nice stop. read more

Park in the lot beyond Audubon Library and the Amherst Police Station the trailhead isn't marked, but there is a universally accessible asphalt walkway that takes you straight back to Audubon Lake. The path loops around the lake with some paths that connect to Walton Pond. read more

When I was about ten years old, some of my family used to live off of the Audubon. They have long since moved away from this area but I still think about their house and where they lived frequently. Recently, I was so distraught that I couldn't remember their address that I went looking for their neighborhood. It was hard to do because I wasn't the one driving when we use to go (as I was eight) so I had no specific directions, just a general sense of where to go. Somehow I made it to the Audubon and merely drove around their neighborhood, upset and bothered that nothing was clicking. Exceppttttt... My tires screeched to a stop as I saw a pathway leading into a wooded area. My mouth dropped as I recalled my childhood, walking my uncle's dog down a long pathway leading toward a lake. My sunglasses plopped off my head in a nostalgic fury and I was rushing down the path to get to an opening. Then here I was, standing in front of a quiet lake. I saw two families across the lake, and many benches for quiet self-reflection. The lake is beautiful, full of inter looping walking trails for small children and your furry children to take in. It's nothing extravagant by any means, but it's beautiful and peaceful if you want it to be. The benches get pretty close to the lake, so it's you and nature and nothing is better than that. I'm quite surprised this doesn't exist on Yelp yet, but I assume it's because Lake Audubon is nestled in a neighborhood. It's open to the public, but you probably wouldn't know much about it if you didn't live in the neighborhood itself. From Millersport, get to North Forest (toward UB) and take a left. Take a right on Audubon and park in the police department's furthest parking lot (closest to the trail) and you're there. A loop around the lake should take you a half an hour to an hour if you're taking your time. Great trail for your dog or for your own mental health time. Enjoy! read more
