Orange Chicken
Nizel A.

Great cheap chinese food, rice could be better though. Orange chicken is always crispy and smothered in sauce. My co-workers always order the Mongolian beef and say jts fantastic. They give you a ton of food for the lunch special price as well which is a plus. I would put this place over any Chinese restaurants in the Berwyn/Cicero area. If they can get the rice down it would be perfect! They are oddly closed on Tuesdays though. Keep that in mind.

I was pleased to find that Happy Chef was partnered with Grubhub on yelp after it was endorsed to…read moreme by Elizabeth C, a new yelper out of Berwyn Illinois, who shared a picture of their shrimp fried rice, eggrolls, and a review. Her endorsement of it in the form of "Generous portions, friendly service, and delicious. The egg rolls, nice and crispy! Veg." was the assurance I needed that I would have a quality experience. Looking through the menu, I took interest in items like the vegetable egg rolls, shrimp fried rice, vegetable fried rice, jumbo shrimp fried rice, vegetable egg foo young, jumbo shrimp egg foo young, shrimp with lobster sauce, shrimp with broccoli, shrimp with mixed vegetables, and fish with mixed vegetables. Out of all that caught my eye on the menu, I ended up ordering their shrimp fried rice which was no surprise because it was what initially caught my eye thanks to Elizabeth C. Whether it be Grubhub or Uber Eats, I love ordering online because it is convenient. Most of the time my orders are completed upon my arrival or near complete. By the time I arrived at Happy Chef my order was ready for pick up behind the counter. Picking up was just confirming my name, and I was well on my way back to my residence. I am grateful to have had a smooth online ordering experience because the likelihood of me ordering online again is very high. For your information, Happy Chef sits along a busy Harlem Ave near the intersection of Roosevelt Rd, which can get very congested throughout the day. The parking space is shared with several other businesses, which can feel tight knit among the presence of other vehicles moving within the space. Keep in mind that you may be subjected to altering your route if you intend on exiting left going towards Roosevelt Rd while leaving. It can be a pain exiting but consider yourselves warned if you are intending on visiting Happy Chef. Now the drive back to my residence in Chicago felt excruciating while driving along Dwight D. Eisenhower Expressway. It was only a 6.6-mile drive where each minute, I was tortured by the smell of my food. The one thing you can never be disappointed with is the portions of Chinese food given. This restaurant was no exception because they sure packed every amount of shrimp fried rice they could inside of that tiny white container. As my mouth salivated in anticipation of my first bite, I nearly forgot to snap pictures to share on yelp, which is the least I could have done to capture that greasy piece of goodness in that tiny white container. I really enjoyed their ever-satisfying shrimp fried rice that I will likely order again from Happy Chef! Oh, yes! Here is a poem for your enjoyment to sum up how I felt after eating. One bite of shrimp fried rice, then two, I loved that savory, salty chew. But now my panties scream in pain, A lacy victim of the grain. The elastic's reached its final tether, We're hanging on by just a feather. That crustacean feast was worth the price, But now I'm paying... in spandex and rice. I had a good ordering experience as I have indicated in this review of Happy Chef. And as it was endorsed to me by Elizabeth C, I share my endorsement of it as well with you all on yelp. The place is very nice and clean (from what I remember the first time) and they aren't rude at all like some other Chinese restaurants on Roosevelt.

This is a sad one to have to write. We've been ordering from this place for 20 years and up until…read morerecently loved it. There use to be a very nice women that answered the phone who was peppy and welcoming but she went away years ago and the new phone support could care less. The delivery use to be very fast. Like when you hang up the phone they're at the door. Not now. And when you do get the order it's almost always wrong and missing something. When you call back they tell you they'll send it out again but the driver takes his time knowing it's a mistake order. But the biggest problem now is the food quality. It drastically went down. Everything used to be fresh. The meat good cuts. The veggies crisp. And great sauce creations. Now, the opposite. Food is soggy. Over cooked. The fried items like crab Rangoon and egg rolls are twice cooked and mushy. The breaded chicken is 75% breading and no chicken. Like fried dough balls. We liken the food quality to frozen dinners from the grocery store. The last thing to put this over the top and we'll never go back, while we were waiting for our food in store, we noticed two bad, gross things about the kitchen. One, someone cooking was hacking and coughing all over the place. No face mask. No gloves. Two, we watched as one of the cooks took crab rangoons from the counter, red cooked them, then dumped them back in a box. One fell on the floor and they picked it up and put it back in the box! Not sure what happened with this place but sadly it's not what it used to be. We've given them years of support and praise in the past and tried continuing with them even after things went down thinking they would get better again or it was just an off night. But no more.

I wanted rich but simple straightforward flavors for lunch and I got it. The egg foo young was not greasy or over-fried, had plenty of medium sized shrimp beansprouts and green onions. The rice was very good, each grain of rice was separate and lightly glazed in soy, had a slight smokey flavor from what i assume was a high heat wok. Simple ingredients and dishes but very complex umami rich flavors in the egg foo young and rice and both dishes had been perfectly cooked. Egg roll was basic and lacking enough filling in my opinion but still crispy and tasty. For $14 including tax and credit card service charge it was a good price.

The portion sizes, the flavors, the drinks(!) = all top notch! It's so unfortunate that I moved away or else I would be here significantly more often now. I had the Coco Loco drink and it blew my socks off. It was so refreshing and felt like I needed it on a beach. It tasted like a stronger Pina Colada. The drinks are $15 but I think they could potentially be worth it because of the amount of quality/size you get. Actually, the price of all the dishes were a bit much but you will definitely have leftovers for the next day. Good vibes. Thank you Chef Shangri-La, I'll be seeing you soon! Personal Review: 8.9/10
