S23. Salt and Pepper Shrimp. Soggy. Did not finish. Fed the rest to the neighbor's cat.
Carissa G.

They used to be consistently good so I decided to try them again. I ordered the salt and pepper shrimp. I wasted my money. The dish should be called salty and soggy shrimp because that is what they were. I have salt and pepper shrimp both with shell and without. These were the worst. They had some kind of noodle on the bottom and I could not tell if they were styrofoam or just stale. I asked how much more would it be to have plain fried rice instead of steamed and they told me 5.00 DOLLARS!!!!!! No ma'am. No thank you. I wasted 14.00 and my time.

Mold on the meat!
Ella B.

I am scared for the well being of my family right now after discovering mold on a piece of meat! Nobody wants to find mold on their food after they are nearly done eating, it makes you wonder if mold was on anything else. The fried rice was hard and old tasting and at first I was bothered by the lack of meat, but after discovering the mold, I realized that maybe I was lucky they are so stingy with the meat in the fried rice. I feel like they try to trick you with the lunch specials. They will fill all compartments of the container with rice and then put a ton of vegetables where the meat goes, that is all to hide the fact that they are only giving you a few pieces of meat in the main entree. I think they are cheaters who serve old moldy food! What a waste of money! We had to throw the rest of every meal we bought in the trash after finding the mold.

Shrimp Fried Rice

Tasty House was recommended to me. I had been searching for a local Cantonese spot. Went there yesterday. Staff was welcoming and very friendly. Checked out menu and placed order. Had great conversation while I waited. My order was ready under 10 minutes. Needless to say when I arrived at home my food was still piping hot. Had shrimp fried rice with egg roll. Food was delicious! Serving portion was so huge that it would be a meal for the next day. Very satisfied and happy.

King Pao Chicken. Mmmmm!!

I've been looking for a good Chinese restaurant ever since moving to oak park 3 years ago. I finally found a winner! Quick Grubhub delivery, piping hot and high quality ingredients! Very flavorful and can't wait to order again.

Beef with mushroom..., more like Mushroom with Beef! Canned mushrooms ruined this dish
Angie A.

Very Disappointing!!! Beef with Mushroom entree had very little beef, it was overloaded with canned mushrooms! Lo Mein was lacking flavor and noodles were overcooked. Poor customer service.

This is my go to place when I want to order Chinese food! Inexpensive, good portion sizes, and really quick service (10-15minutes). Great tasting cheap eats. My menu items are the beef chow fun and chicken wings.. The wings are pretty large have a really tasty, crispy batter. And the beef in the chow fun is so soft and moist, and they give you a good serving of beef mixed in the noodles. I tried a smoothie this time. The mango smoothie was a little too sweet and artificial tasting but far from worst I've tasted from a fast food place and pretty much on par with what you would expect. The place isn't really appealing for dining in, it's small and a plain. But that doesn't really affect the taste of the food which my review is mainly based off of.

Especially in Chinatown in Chicago for there not to be a lot of people in this restaurant kind of concerning, but we didn't wanna wait in line and Google said that the reviews are really good for this place. Mind you we did get dim sum so who knows if the regular dinner dishes would be better. We ordered the staples as attached in the photos. Everything was warm, but not hot. Lacked a lot of flavor. The hottest dish that came out where the shrimp spring rolls. Can't go wrong with those to be honest. Again, like I said, maybe their dinner is better. If I had to compare price wise, I feel like it's comparable to Toronto prices.

I wanted rich but simple straightforward flavors for lunch and I got it. The egg foo young was not greasy or over-fried, had plenty of medium sized shrimp beansprouts and green onions. The rice was very good, each grain of rice was separate and lightly glazed in soy, had a slight smokey flavor from what i assume was a high heat wok. Simple ingredients and dishes but very complex umami rich flavors in the egg foo young and rice and both dishes had been perfectly cooked. Egg roll was basic and lacking enough filling in my opinion but still crispy and tasty. For $14 including tax and credit card service charge it was a good price.

I had the Coco Loco drink and it blew my socks off. It was so refreshing and felt like I needed it on a beach. It tasted like a stronger Pina Colada. The drinks are $15 but I think they could potentially be worth it because of the amount of quality/size you get. Actually, the price of all the dishes were a bit much but you will definitely have leftovers for the next day. Good vibes. Thank you Chef Shangri-La, I'll be seeing you soon! Personal Review: 8.9/10

Dai Yee's Asian Kitchen - Shrimp Broccoli, Beef Tofu (hot), Egg Fried Rice

Tucked into a no-frills corner on the South Side, Dai Yee's looks modest from the outside, but step in after 10 p.m. and it's pure magic. The room is packed with everybody--sneakerheads, nurses coming off shift, club kids, cops, and couples on first dates who somehow heard the legend. The vibe is chaotic in the best way: woks roaring, orders flying, and that unmistakable perfume of sizzling garlic, ginger, and chili filling the air. The food is straight-up stupid good. The Hong Kong-style salt & pepper smelts are crackly, spicy, and gone in 30 seconds. The beef chow fun has that elusive wok hei (breath of the wok) that most places only dream of, wide rice noodles slick with smoky char and tender flank steak. The black pepper beef tenderloin is velvet-soft, glossy, and aggressively peppery in a way that makes you order extra rice just to survive the happiness. The Singapore noodles are bright curry perfection, and the Mongolian beef is saucy, crispy-edged, and borderline addictive. Portions are straight out of the 90s--massive trays that could feed a family of four for under $15. Cash-only, BYOB, and everything comes out blazing hot in under ten minutes even when the place is slammed. The ladies running the show are legends: fast, funny, and they'll roast you (lovingly) if you can't handle the spice level you asked for. If you leave Chicago without hitting Dai Yee's at least once (preferably at 1 a.m. with a six-pack), you didn't really experience the city. This is real-deal, no-filter, soul-satisfying Chinese food that reminds you why we fall in love with restaurants in the first place. Dai Yee's isn't just a restaurant; it's a Chicago institution in the making. I'd wait in line in a blizzard for those smelts. See you at midnight.

Communication was a challenge since very little English was spoken, and the descriptions of the dishes were lacking. I don't enjoy gambling on menu titles that sound good but end up being something completely different from what you expect. Some of the more familiar dishes were solid. The Kung Pao Chicken and Mongolian Beef were both pretty good and tasted like what you'd expect from most Chinese restaurants. Other dishes were much harder to understand, even after asking questions about how they were prepared or whether they were sweet or savory. We ordered the Sauteed Chicken in Hot Spicy Sauce Rice, which turned out to be very heavy on Sichuan peppercorns with a strong floral aftertaste. The chicken sat on a bed of what looked and tasted like deep-fried kale, and despite the word "rice" in the name, there was no rice in the dish at all. That's one item we won't be ordering again. We also tried the Fish Filet with Hot and Sour Lime Sauce. It was basically a sweet-and-sour style fish dish. It wasn't bad, but it leaned much sweeter than expected. Another thing to note: none of the dishes come with white rice--it's completely à la carte. We only found that out after ordering. With prices being what they are these days, it would be nice if they included at least some white rice like most Chinese restaurants do. Overall, the food wasn't terrible, but the lack of clear descriptions and communication made the experience frustrating. I prefer restaurants where expectations are clear rather than discovering surprises after the food arrives.
