I was pleased to find that Happy Chef was partnered with Grubhub on yelp after it was endorsed to me by Elizabeth C, a new yelper out of Berwyn Illinois, who shared a picture of their shrimp fried rice, eggrolls, and a review. Her endorsement of it in the form of "Generous portions, friendly service, and delicious. The egg rolls, nice and crispy! Veg." was the assurance I needed that I would have a quality experience. Looking through the menu, I took interest in items like the vegetable egg rolls, shrimp fried rice, vegetable fried rice, jumbo shrimp fried rice, vegetable egg foo young, jumbo shrimp egg foo young, shrimp with lobster sauce, shrimp with broccoli, shrimp with mixed vegetables, and fish with mixed vegetables. Out of all that caught my eye on the menu, I ended up ordering their shrimp fried rice which was no surprise because it was what initially caught my eye thanks to Elizabeth C. Whether it be Grubhub or Uber Eats, I love ordering online because it is convenient. Most of the time my orders are completed upon my arrival or near complete. By the time I arrived at Happy Chef my order was ready for pick up behind the counter. Picking up was just confirming my name, and I was well on my way back to my residence. I am grateful to have had a smooth online ordering experience because the likelihood of me ordering online again is very high. For your information, Happy Chef sits along a busy Harlem Ave near the intersection of Roosevelt Rd, which can get very congested throughout the day. The parking space is shared with several other businesses, which can feel tight knit among the presence of other vehicles moving within the space. Keep in mind that you may be subjected to altering your route if you intend on exiting left going towards Roosevelt Rd while leaving. It can be a pain exiting but consider yourselves warned if you are intending on visiting Happy Chef. Now the drive back to my residence in Chicago felt excruciating while driving along Dwight D. Eisenhower Expressway. It was only a 6.6-mile drive where each minute, I was tortured by the smell of my food. The one thing you can never be disappointed with is the portions of Chinese food given. This restaurant was no exception because they sure packed every amount of shrimp fried rice they could inside of that tiny white container. As my mouth salivated in anticipation of my first bite, I nearly forgot to snap pictures to share on yelp, which is the least I could have done to capture that greasy piece of goodness in that tiny white container. I really enjoyed their ever-satisfying shrimp fried rice that I will likely order again from Happy Chef! Oh, yes! Here is a poem for your enjoyment to sum up how I felt after eating. One bite of shrimp fried rice, then two, I loved that savory, salty chew. But now my panties scream in pain, A lacy victim of the grain. The elastic's reached its final tether, We're hanging on by just a feather. That crustacean feast was worth the price, But now I'm paying... in spandex and rice. I will never patronize this place again, and hope many more read the OTHER bad reviews and decide not to reward them for bad service. I phoned delivery order in yesterday around 9:30 PM so that food would be here for wife after work, at 11:30 PM. They never delivered it. They told me it would be 40 minutes to an hour. Naturally, after an hour they were CLOSED. I phone back today, and asked what happened. They said there was a big backlog of orders and they never got around to mine before the Chef left. They said they refunded my money today. They offered no explanation for why nobody bothered to phone me and tell me to stop waiting and watching out the window for two hours. Wife was NOT happy. Unhappy WIFE, so is my LIFE. The "manager" said they would talk to employees so that this does not happen again. I said "that is not going to help me, after you inconvenienced both me and my wife, and left us hanging with no food, and no explanation why." Long story short, they refused to give me any sort of coupon as compensation. They said "We can't do anything more, we already refunded your money." They do not care that they only did what they needed to do to avoid being charged with THEFT, and false pretenses. She refused to let me talk with her Boss. I spent 15 minutes explaining why this is a poor way to handle the situation. They just don't care. My wife liked the food. We bought food to take out regularly. Rude service from man at counter. I was the first customer of the day. I asked what the difference was between the dinner portion and the lunch portion because they are two different prices. He replied with a nasty attitude "They are the same." When I got my food, I checked it (like most normal people do if they drive a distance) He got angry when I told him my order was wrong. Had a great time here! Went in for a lunch special, I got orange chicken special, came with a free pop. The orange chicken literally tasted like Panda's orange chicken, and was so much cheaper. My fried rice was great per any fried rice, and came with an egg roll. I was surprised for the massive amount of food we got, the price was so reasonable. Let's be real people: almost all Chinese places are the same. I don't get in a tither if the food is a little off once in a while...it's a fast Chinese joint. Don't have such high expectations. Personally, I do like Happy Chef. Walking distance from my house and their food is consistantly good. Friendly people working there and very good English speakers. This Happy Chef is at 3900 W Touhy in Lincolnwood - not Forest Park. Mostly carry out business - we stopped in for lunch and occupied one of the two available booths. Ordered Yu Shaun Beef with veggies and Orange Chicken. Both were labeled as spicy - neither dish was even mildly spicy. The beef was tender and good sized. Came with broccoli, carrots, water chestnuts, cabbage, part of one mushroom and a slice of onion. Chicken was breaded and over cooked: meat was dry and the breading was hard. The sauce had an odd flavor - as if it was over cooked to the point of burning - and rather than throw it out - fresh orange sauce was blended in. Not good. Both dishes served with quasi fried rice: no onion, egg or other veggies mixed in, but definitely rice that was thrown in a pan with some soy sauce. While we were there two customers who appeared to be regulars cane in and placed carry out orders. If I lived nearby I might take an order home and spice it up myself. read more

September 7th through the 14th, they are having a 50% sale, (not all teas are on sale) they do this once a year. They have a wide variety of teas, some conventional, some unconventional. She bought all kinds of teas, but they stopped carrying her favorite, lemon chiffon, which was very disappointing. Once again, this is your typical storefront Chinese restaurant. It is so common that I drive by here several times weekly and have never noticed it here. Once again, you get huge portions at a reasonable price. My beef and broccoli tasted well... err..., umm... pretty much like hundreds of beef and broccolis that i have had in the past. Nothing really made it stand out to me. My biggest complaint was the guy behind the counter was probably the most unfriendly guy I have dealt with in a long time in the service industry. I've tried a lot of the Asian establishments around Berwyn, Oak Park and Forest Park. Some are better than others but Happy Chef is always consistent. Service is fast, food is always good, prices great, and the portions huge. So huge I usually don't have to go out or shop for lunch for a couple days. My favorite is their Hunan Chicken which is very tasty and has just the right heat. Also their Mongolian Beef is good as well. Asian takeout staples like sweet and sour pork and beef chow mein are good and worth a try. Their sides like egg rolls, crab rangoon and fried rices are some of the better sides in the area. Even their Chicken soup is good. Now don't get me wrong, this is Asian takeout and not a high end culinary experience and nor should it be viewed as such. I'm a fan of Tasty House, located about 2 blocks east of Happy Chef on Roosevelt, and I have to say, Happy Chef gives it a run for its money. The Szechuan sauce seems to be a little less-spicy than Tasty House's, assuming you don't accidentally bite into one of the peppers like I did, but otherwise it's close. The inside is super-Spartan, as has been said, and even the menus have "dine-in" blacked out now, but it isn't a big deal. They still have some seats and a garbage can if you choose to eat there. Where Happy Chef has TH beat is the Thai offerings and fruit smoothies. I have not had either one (though I plan to tomorrow after work), but that they even offer it is great. You want an avocado smoothie? They have it, but why not just eat some mild guacamole instead? I hate to say it, but it's almost like you can pick either one, depending on which street you're driving down - Tasty House for Roosevelt and Happy Chef for Harlem. I've been a regular here for a few years now. I didn't realize they had a 2.5 star average. I feel that it's undeserved. It's cheap chinese food, but it's not *bad* and each "lunch special" is enough food for two days and they cost ~$5. And they'll have it ready in 10 minutes. That's awesome. Sometimes you need fancy dim sum, made with exotic, dainty vegetables and fine sauce made from professional chefs from the top culinary school in Xi'an. And sometimes you need a box of greasy Kung pao deliciousness that may or may not have possum in it. I've never had marsupial in my to-go box from Happy Chef, but it's great in terms of the quality, and especially QUANTITY of food you get from this place. My group often orders the family dinner, with lo mein, fried chicken, kung pao, fried rice, and plenty of egg rolls and rangoon. Not for the fanciest of palates, but if you're with a crowd of your friends making it through the latest episode of True Detective and you want some pot stickers while watching Colin Farrell punch people, this is the place to call in Forest Park. While not in the city of Berwyn you could hit it with a pebble without trying hard. They have flavorful food, quality service and an expansive menu. My favorite dishes are Panang curry with tofu, beef with mushrooms, sweet and sour chicken, and crab Rangoon (the orange sauce that it comes with reminds me of Orange Garden's sauce- oh how I miss living down the street from Orange Garden!).
