Doug who's the head of it knows wtf he's doing and makes it a point to make his games fun and entertaining with his banter. If you see them scheduled somewhere near you definitely check them out. I went the opposite route from Allen S. and came on Sunday, taking a short break from AX. Most of…read morethe things that weren't available right away on AM2's first day were there, though seemingly abandoned (food trucks, arcade, etc). On first entering the convention center, I recognized ALL of the staff manning the information table in front of the exhibit hall (with more checking in and hanging out as I was asking them questions) as former AX staff. I know that last year, several now-former AX staffers jumped ship due to their frustrations with the convention's organization for one reason or another. This was their effort to throw down the gauntlet to the SPJA. Not only did they offer a (mostly) FREE convention at the same exact time that Anime Expo was going on, they put it in the Anaheim Convention Center - where AX has been held in the past and to which a good number of long-time attendees still wish AX would return. On top of this, AX has long-abandoned the Matsuri (summer festival), which many staffers and attendees have voiced missing. So what's in the center of the exhibit hall? The summer festival. AM2 had the luxury of taking over a hall downstairs and the entire second floor. Not having a "passport" or the forethought to print out the schedule at home, we just wandered around looking at the schedules posted on each door and found nothing that really struck our interest or that we found worth waiting around for. We ended up sticking to the main hall on the groundfloor, which housed the dealer area, the summer festival, artists alley, photo booths, a stage with chairs laid out, a small signing area, and "the Rum Party" (pretty much people dressed as pirates and playing tabletop games). The dealer hall was maybe 40 exhibitors, tops. No big industry booths (which are fewer in number these days at AX), and as someone mentioned some of the dealers double-dipped and had booths at both AM2 and AX this year. Since I came on Sunday (usually the slowest day for a convention), I didn't see many people buying. Overall, I'd say AM2 has potential. Seemed like there were still plenty of people wearing passports, having paid to come see an event that was otherwise free if you weren't interested in attending specific pieces of it. It felt like AM2 was former AX staff attempting to resurrect the things they missed and probably considered AX's former glory with it being a smaller con in Anaheim, held 4th of July weekend. While AM2 certainly wasn't perfect (as first time cons, and even long-time ones, never really are), it took on the now 20-year-old Anime Expo which has become quite a Goliath in the anime community. They rented out a convention center, booked talent and exhibitors, offered video rooms, panels, and entry into most of the convention for FREE, and they still donated 25% of the passport sales to Japanese Disaster Relief. They've got guts, and fortune favors the bold.

When I arrived on Sunday to watch SCANDAL (I think it was Sunday, couldn't have been Sat, but I could be wrong), the place was EMPTY. Like the foil in the gum wrapper in the pack empty. You could hear pins drop on the carpet. The exhibit hall was joke. No one was there. The guest of honer KanonXKanon that was there for a signing, I felt bad for them because while there was about 10 people there, they were there as onlookers not as people getting autographs. I do wreckin' there were a few people though to get the autograph. As the time drew near for the SCANDAL concert that was when I saw a lot of people. I didn't attend this year because they announced nothing. None of the glam they had in 2011. And while they people are saying this is the 2nd year for AM2, it's technically the 3rd, it used to be MAX, the con that was on the same time as AX in 2012. In which MAX actually had more people and better guests that year. I can understand people coming because it's a "free" con. But really any con is free when you are only there to see cosplayers and your friends. The "passport" does nothing if your not interested in the -lack of- guests.

I give 12 Shiny Nickels 1 star. ***** MI Westside Comedy is in the alley between 3rd street and 4th street south of Arizona directly behind the big Santa Monica Parking structure on 4th. If on 3rd street, go into the food court that has the McDonald's, Candy Baron, Subway and walk thru to the alley in the back. This place is small, has a small bar, but if you go on a good night, like the Saturday 10pm improv show it's pretty good and worth it just for the comedy. I went to the 11pm show 12 Shiny Nickels, but caught the tail end of the 10pm show. If you pay for the 10pm show, they let you stay for free for the 11pm show hoping the lead in will have audiences stay, which should say something right there... 12 Shiny Nickels is described as, "Each show features twelve of the best standup comedians in a row doing their best five minutes of material. We have rotating lineup over 80 comics with a new lineup every week." The night I went was not great. If anything, most of the comics were unfocused, new, and got off the stage before their 5 min were up. I now question the phrase, "the best standup comedians" as what they are best of isn't qualified... My Boo said he would go back, I would not.

I don't know how they can charge so little but I'm there! Decided to check it out because Andy Dick was suppose to be there taping for his new reality show (gotta love watching a train-wreck). The doors open at 10:30pm and the show starts tentatively at 11pm. We arrived a few minutes before 10:30 and were the only people there for awhile. Next time, I'd come closer to 11. It's a little bit of an adventure getting to the theatre, it's located right behind Toi on Sunset Blvd. You go down an alley on Gardner street that looks like something out of Gothom City. A nice man is there to give you a wristband and take your $10/online reservations. You then go down some TREACHEROUS ridiculously steep stairs. Keep in mind, NOT an excellent place to wear your stilettos... Also, quite challenging after drinking boat loads of Tecate. At first, I was a little skeptical about the unlimited free beer but lemme tell you, they are not kidding! There is a bar stocked with canned beer (Pabst, Miller, Tecate, etc.) and you can get up and have as much as you want before and during the show. The show was very entertaining, although it was a little disappointing that Andy Dick didn't show. They were nice enough to let us know he wasn't going to come and offered us refunds before the show started. Not some of the best comedians I've seen but hey, what do you want for $10 and free booze? Halfway through the show they gave away free prizes to people who ordered their tickets in advance... I got a VHS copy of Men In Black 2!! Way better than the guy before me that got an at-home-pregnancy-test kit! Whoo hoo! Really nice people run this show, definitely will be back with more of my beer guzzl'n, comedy love'n friends.

Went to the OC Fair to watch a concert at the Hangar. The Bee Gee cover band was playing. Great…read moreshow! The Hangar acoustics was good. I can hear the concert wherever I am stationed. They also televise the concert on two big screens. One inside and one outside. Pretty much it is a free concert for people to enjoy. Hangar usually has great cover band lineup. You cannot go wrong with this place. If you purchase a concert ticket, admission to the fair is free. That is a deal you cannot beat. Inside seating and outdoor standing is available. If it wasn't for the Hangar, the OC fair would be very boring. Aside from the Pacific Amphitheater. I come back every year. Sales of adult beverages is surrounding this place.

Wow, what an honor for me to be the 2nd person to write a review on this indoor venue…read more After 16 years of being in the spotlight, I am so surprised that first off, The Hangar has a Yelp page, and even more surprised that no one has done a review on this simple, practical, lovely venue for concerts. While we were at the OC Fair, my son purchased a single ticket just for me to go and see Breakdown, the Tom Petty tribute band. It was purchased a week before the show. They were doing a special tribute for all of his greatest songs/hits that he had throughout the years. My ticket was $30. Show started exactly at 8:15pm. I had a great seat. Section 102, Row M, Seat 17. When I got there, I couldn't find my seat. Asked one of the ushers over there to show me my seat and he had a better suggestion by telling me to sit more closer to the stage. Smart usher, so I took up on his offer. They had one of those metal folding chairs. Place was super crowded, but in a very good way. No one was in your face and the venue had almost 700 people, if not more. The energy in the venue was electrifying, magical and magnetic. I have been a fan of Tom Petty for the past 25 years when one of my neighbors would blast his music everyday on repeat.. They allow you to bring in alcohol, (beer & wine), and snacks. The sound system of the venue was spectacular, it was just perfect! Not too loud. And had 2 large TVs by the sides of the stage. Place was very clean, so were both restrooms, and the show lasted for almost 2 hours. People were even dancing by the stage. 4 security guards were close to the stage so they can protect everyone. Especially the crazy fans. May Tom Petty (RIP) and all we have now is his photos, memorabilia, CDs DVDs, and memories.. What a legend he was... Thank you all very much for this beautiful, memorable evening that was on July 29the of this year!! You can park at the OC Fair.

Within minutes of walking in, a group of 8 lined up for a ski shot at the bar: snow machine blasting, everyone cheering, so much fun and yes, I filmed it for them. This place looks even better in-person than online, I did not feel catfished by the online posts I saw of it. The whole place is a vibe. The decor hits festive and fun without sliding into tacky. Even though it's technically outdoors, the heaters are no joke, you could show up in a skirt and t-shirt and be perfectly comfortable. Whoever is in charge of this heating situation, you nailed it! Junior was our bartender and he was fantastic, friendly, and quick. Now, the drinks: The Bigfoot is basically a dessert disguised as a cocktail. It comes topped with this warm, doughnut-like block drizzled in chocolate. Easily my favorite of the night. The Snow Bunny leans lighter, not too sweet, and the cute little "ears" it comes with are such a fun touch. We also tried the Not-So Shirley Temple, and I slipped in a glass of red wine between all the festive drinks. For food, we ordered the tosti, mushroom bisque, and fries, and everything was good. My only gripe: they close at 10pm, which feels early for a place this fun. Wish they kept the party going later because the energy here deserves more runway but Graceland (speakeasy inside HQ gastropub) is just 1 min walk around the corner, def recommend going there to keep the party going for another hour! The servers are in 80s outfits. They have shot skis. They also have Snow which fall (aka bubbles) about every 30 mins I think. It is timed not too sure on that. The searing is small indoor the event pop up area but many outdoor places and some indoor. The bathrooms have a code. Just ask for it. The decor of Christmas is indoor seating area.
