Really good place to go to for craft beer, each time I've gone here I've never gotten the same beer twice. Plus they let serve individual cans/bottles instead of forcing you to make a six pack, which I love and not every place does. They also have a lot of beer and wine but I don't usually buy that. Plenty of snacks to choose from at the front as well if you desire. Also they often have tasting samples in back, of either beer or cider or wine, which is cool. My last visit on Dec 2019 ended up with me leaving empty handed, I planned on buying a few bottles of Bourbon..but because the staff was so rude I decided to take my business elsewhere. Fast forward June 30, 2020. I decided to revisit, to buy some rare seasonal sour beers. For a business that was recently "looted" and set up a go fund me page for looting relief, you would think they would acknowledge and appreciate any customer and/or future sales that walks through their door. Instead, I was stared at, no greeting upon entry. I was one of two customers in the entire store. I again walked out without spending a dime and definitely will not return. Rude customer service. They need to treat people with respect and not talk bad about others as they are about to leave the store. I spent a couple hundred dollars a couple weeks ago and the person who helped me was so kind. I went back in recently and whoever was there was rude as hell. I didn't find what anything my husband wanted and was FaceTiming my hubby, so it took sometime. As I was leaving I hear a man say "look she's leaving without buying anything and she made a mess". If they look in their video footage, the shelves were already a mess and I was actually trying to organize them as I was looking. Don't accuse me and disrespect me or any other customer like that. This place was a lifesaver -- it opened at 7:30am and had quite the curated selection. A go-to for wine, unique spirits, and the likes. I saw there traditional spirits were quite overpriced, but if you are in a pinch.. you'd get over it! I was able to find a reasonably priced and well rated (go google) Port and Champagne. My recipients haven't told me about its goodness, but I'm hoping for the best. Bonus was there was complimentary wrapping with a ribbon for your purchase. How cool is that? Sadly, the person working was not knowledgeable at all. She shared that everything was handpicked, which is great, and labeled well.. but not the person to really help me get that one special gift. I really wanted to like this place. It's a very attractive space with a nice wood-and-barrels aesthetic in a good location, and the selection of spirits is decent for a place its size. Unfortunately, the pricing and staff is horrific, and I'm never stepping foot inside again. First, the unfortunate but typical: The bourbon I came for was twice the price of Binny's, and the wine selection was poor even for a store this size. I'm happy to spend more at an independent shop, but a $35 bourbon turning into a $70 bourbon is not acceptable anywhere. Now for the bad stuff. As I walked in, I saw the staff screaming at a homeless person to get out. I understand if you don't want certain people in your store, but screaming at him at the top of your lungs and calling him a thief and a liar, then telling him they won't take his money as he got it from begging is not acceptable, especially with other customers in the store. After he finally left, I then heard the staff members tell each other that he's the reason there's a fruit fly infestation in the shop. Not sure how a homeless person would cause that, but now I know Warehouse Liquors has a fruit fly infestation. As a kicker, before leaving because of rejecting the prices and my wife not finding any wine she wanted, I asked the fellow at the counter where their bitters were, figuring it was better to not leave empty-handed. He replied that he had no idea what bitters were, then continued to mumble to himself, clearly under the influence of a substance not stocked at this location. When I asked him again, thinking he misheard, he swore at me. The best part? This was at 8 PM on a Tuesday. Who knows what the place would be like at a later hour. Given the rude, ignorant, and drug-addled staff, high prices, and an insect infestation, stay far, far away. read more

I have never been treated so rudely in my life! I stopped in because it was so close to the hotel that they recommended it. I looked around at a few different wines before making my selection. At one point, I had a bottle in my hand that I decided against, and told a worker I couldn't remember where I got it. He put it back for me. As we were leaving, a short man with glasses claiming to be the manager confronted us, asking if we were going to put anything back where we found it. He told us that we came into his "house" and made a mess. He refused us service and made us leave. We are two upper middle class 50-somethings....not drunk or disorderly...no reason he would have acted so unprofessionally toward us, let anyone ANY customer. We will tell staff at the hotel to stop recommending them. read more

Appearances Can be Deceiving As it was a hot day and it was taking my friend longer than expected to arrive, I decided to stop in and grab a cold bottle of juice. I had never stopped by and I was very impressed with the cool interior layout and overall decor. As I made my way to the counter with my beverage I was greated very politely and informed of my total. I had cash, but decided to use my card. The owner, verbal informed that I needed to spend at least 5 dollars to use the card. Which is reasonable. What was not reasonable, was that he moved my bottle of juice far off to the side behind the cash register as he was speaking without giving me the chance to offer to pay in cash. I mentioned this to him, and instead of acknowledging a possible hasty conclusion he said it was my call as to if I wanted to request to start the transaction again. I'm 26 and every time I go in there I can't help but feel like i'm being stared at the entire time i'm browsing because they think i'm underage or stealing (who knows). I've been here around a dozen times over the years, since they had a good selection of beer and whiskey. The service has never been good, usually they just flat out ignore you. Cool schtick guys. Recently I had a bizarre experience here, and I won't be returning. After browsing the whiskey selection for a few minutes, I was trying to decide on one for a gift and was looking at the bottles for prices, since they don't have any tags on the shelf. The staff had been silent and never offered help, but suddenly I was approached by a manager who curtly asked me to leave. Why? For "walking back and forth, and picking up bottles". They kicked me out for browsing. Clearly they were profiling me for not wearing a suit and tie or some other garbage. I was prepared to spend $100 for a gift, but will never spend a dime here again. I'm basing this mostly off of my experience in the hard liquor (whiskey) section, since I typically don't need much help finding beer. Gene (the owner) is incredibly helpful in recommending a bottle of whatever it is you're looking for. I've been a few times in the last few months (either grabbing Christmas presents for my dad/other family members, or just picking up a bottle of bourbon for myself), and he has always gone out of his way to make sure I get what I'm looking for. One of the things I most appreciate is that he tries to recommend you the right bottle, not what will make him the most money; I've been recommended bottles much less expensive than what I was looking at, simply because Gene thinks they're a better choice. To be clear, I ask for his opinion; he doesn't poo-poo what I'm looking at, just gives me his thoughts when I need some help. He has a ton of store-select whiskies (and a great selection of bourbons and ryes in general; I don't do much in the way of Scotch, but he's got some good stuff there, too), and can give you pretty detailed notes on each of them, which is another bonus; I like it when the guy (or gal) selling me booze is an enthusiast like me. I've seen criticisms of the fact that it will sometimes be a while before any one comes to talk to you--I take that as a positive as well. If you ask for help (or just look confused), Gene will come right over, but if you look like you're just taking it all in, he gives you a chance to see everything before he comes over (there's nothing worse than having someone try to recommend things to you within 2 seconds of you stepping into the aisle). As someone who spends a lot of time checking out the whiskey sections of various liquor stores, I can tell you that this is one of the best I've seen in the city. It's physically small, but there's a lot of good stuff packed in there, and a good part of it has been hand-picked by Gene, which adds to its legitimacy. Certainly not exactly the place you expect to see a liquor store of this caliber, but highly worth a look. read more

Was in from out of town for my brother's wedding and needed a bottle of something special. I was quite impressed with my experience and will definitely be back next time I'm in town. Staff was very courteous and knowledgeable (I'm not sure why others had different experiences). Gene was happy to talk to me about their very impressive whiskey selection (all with hand written notes) and helped me pick out a special bottling of a High West Rye. Price was quite fair. They also had a good selection of bitters and other things like plastic old fashioned glasses that I needed. Beer selection looked quite good as well but didn't have time to check it out. P.S. I no longer patronize this establishment. As others have noted -- service is very hit or miss, and can be pretentious bordering on utterly obnoxious. Sometimes it's good to know where you stand with folks, and there's no "loyalty" from wine shop guys. Liquor stores know that desperate imbibers are going to shop there regardless, so they don't have to provide particularly GOOD service to anybody. If you want the booze, 8 out of 10 people are going to spend the money no matter how poorly you're treated. Well, I'm one of the 2 exceptions. At the end of the day at this establishment, my business meant nothing to them. So I took my business elsewhere, and gladly. Fortunately we have options in the South Loop. Warehouse Liquors is located in the Loop, on Wabash, kind of in the center of the Columbia College "campus". The atmosphere inside is quite clean and aesthetically pleasing. It isn't a large store, but it still manages to have a large selection of beer, wine and spirits. I really enjoyed their whiskey/scotch/bourbon selection which, considering the size of the establishment, is impressive. You'll find a few bottles that would be hard to track down elsewhere. The prices are reasonable, but not great. That reflects the nature of being located downtown, though, and to have a place where you can find a good selection that goes above and beyond the run of the mill corner liquor store is great. Unfortunately the positive qualities end there. This past summer, right after Bluesfest in Grant Park, we wandered into Warehouse Liquors on our way home. There were about five people in our group. I had been wanting to purchase a bottle of Lagavulin 16 for a while and figured we could pop in and grab one. We're all in our twenties and we had been out in the sun all day so we weren't dressed to impress. I picked the bottle up off the shelf (Warehouse Liquors doesn't have these bottles behind the counter) to show my friend what we would be buying. Seconds later the long-haired guy behind the counter barked at me not to pick up the bottles. I was stunned but quickly put it back in its right place. We weren't yelling or messing around, but the death stare I got from this guy was unbelievable. I understand if that's their store policy, but work on your bedside manner a little if you want to work in customer service. This annoyed my boyfriend and we quickly made the decision to take our business elsewhere. One of our friends was parched, though, and desperately needed to buy a bottle of water so we begrudgingly got in line. As soon as the customer in front of us completed his purchase we heard one of the clerks look at us and mutter to the other "Oh God, kill me now." We were appalled but we just handed over our money and left. I'd never come across a cashier that pretentious in my life. Instead we went to Printer's Row Wine Shop which is only three (well, really, two and a half) short blocks away at 719 S Dearborn! We found exactly what we were looking for and the gentleman working there was friendly and helpful. I would recommend them hand over fist as a much more appealing alternative. Their selection of whiskey is not quite as vast, but their wine and craft beer selection is wonderful! They also have all the basics covered in terms of spirits. I still have no idea what we might have done to deserve the poor treatment we got at Warehouse Liquors. Maybe the clerks mistook us for Columbia College students and thought we were going to be a pain in the butt. Maybe they were having a bad day. That said, I suspect that maybe this was just how they chose to cope with being in their thirties and still working retail. I don't know what that feels like, so I can't say. read more

I called to see if Warehouse Liquors to see if they had pappy van winkle in stock. I was told by the gentleman on the phone that they did in fact have it. When I asked if it would still be there if I came in today, he said I wouldn't be able to buy it. I guess "the owner" only sells it to his loyal customers. I understand holding things for loyal customers, but how are you supposed to get new customers if you don't allow for them to buy what they are looking for? Don't let the name "Warehouse" fool you, this boutique wine shop, which also carries a small but impressive selection of liquors, including some harder to find stuff, is anything but. It's small but packed with a great selection of wines, champagnes and interesting beers. The staff is really helpful (they always offer to help me find something, and to chill my wine) and there is something for almost every budget. While there is no rock-bottom bargain bin, there is a variety of good bottles in the $9-$15 range, as well and many more quality bottles priced accordingly. Yes yes yes yes yes. This was my liquor store when I lived in the loop. A spot so great that I felt CLASSY to have branded a liquor store as my own. Husband and I would spend afternoons browsing. Reading the labels of all the exotic liquors and beers. Decidedly avoiding the wines (due to wine intimidation, NOT to lack of a rockin selection). But here's the magic: the guys here are so effing brilliant. They'll tell me, "that's not going to taste like you want it to. You want this one." And they're always right. They introduced me to Licor 43, now an all-time fave. They have a good selection of snacks, too. As in things I actually want to eat. When I was homesick from TX and frustrated at the sad selection at Jewel, I used to buy salsas here. I still go back whenever I'm in the area, grab a lambic, and the place is still stellar. read more

This review starts on a melancholy note, but thanks to Warehouse Liquors, has a very happy ending. I went to Chicago last week and missed the luggage check-in cutoff time. I typically never check luggage, but this was a special trip and I had packed three very, very special bottles of wine. In addition to being somewhat pricey, they also all are difficult to find and have some meaning to me. I gave them to some random, extremely lucky guy in Orange County. Sigh. Hope he enjoyed them. So I arrive in Chicago, morose and wine-less. Enter Yelp and the reviews for Warehouse Liquors, conveniently a block away from our hotel. I wasn't expecting much, maybe some overpriced Cakebread or something of that ilk. But holy wine bottles, was this place AMAZING. Well-informed staff, lots of tasty chocolate and other munchies, great beer selection... And the wine! Row upon row of bottles from all over the world, including the really hard-to-find French burgundy I had tried to bring with me! And the Naia Verdejo that is the most perfect summer afternoon wine ever. And Calera Pinot Noir! And TONS of shirazes and zins and other 750-ml containers of yumminess. There are craft beers on hand, and if you forget something to drink them out of, many styles of glasses to buy. The prices were pretty much right where you'd expect them to be for a wine shop in the south part of the Loop and near a college, and it's not the sort of place you stop in when you're running low on Night Train, so save your dosh for something special. Quite possibly the best liquor store I've ever been in. A serious selection of liquor, beer, & wine many of which I am not familiar. The staff was awesome as well - say three words to describe what you like and you'll walk away a happy person. On Thursday nights they have tastings; lucky for us we stumbled-upon this and sampled some absinthe, some sort of 120 proof whiskey, along with some Ommegang brewing selections. There is also a nice selection of cheeses and snacks. So when you're in a tight again and need a quick bottle or package for a party, dinner, or just that lonely night at home...stop by. Despite not being able to find what I was looking for, this place is fantastic. They have a slew of high end harder to find spirits. The Ardbeg section alone is worth it. I've been on the hunt for Pappy Van Winkle and Ardbeg Supernova but those are nearly ghosts. I had a long chat with the guy at the counter about various boozes and he gave me recommendations for other places that might carry the things I'd covet. Love this liquor store! Very clean and neat, but mostly because of the great beer selection (and wine selection, although I'm much more of a beer drinker). I did a search for liquor stores in the area, closest to Grant Park. There are not many in the area, but this is by far the best one. There just so happened to be a free wine tasting the day we went (every Friday from 5-8, I believe); lucky us! We didn't want to pay a ridiculous amount for Budweiser beer at Lollapalooza, so we came here. The guys working the front cash registers are awesome, funny and friendly. They also carry some snacks. We actually returned to this store again the same day and again the next day. I will definitely bookmark this place for the next time I'm in the loop and need a beer or liquor fix. read more

They have an enormous selection of great Belgians and US craft brews, even some flanders red ales that you can't get anywhere else nearby, and a FANTASTIC selection (and great prices!) of bourbons and other whiskies. Their special single barrel batch of buffalo trace is a really good deal, too, and very nice. the staff are probably the friendliest and most helpful that I've ever found at any liquor store anywhere. First off, I'm grateful that this little neighborhood gem is alive and well. As sad as it was to lose the Dexter building and the old Thai Spoon building in the fire in '06, the damage apparently didn't reach Warehouse Liquors next door. Any time I need to find a very specific bottle of wine or a fancy ale or stout, I take comfort in knowing I can call this place, and often they have what I'm searching for. For such a small shop, they sure do stock it well. They even carry food items to compliment the imbibing.
