I've gone here before (good exp w Lamothe) but haven't had eye exam in at least two yrs . I called to make an appt and spoke w the office mgr/ receptionist. He had a flat affect and set a negative stage. I said I prob need more than a routine eye exam but was happy to start w that. He lmk that a dry eye test isn't covered by ins (which is fine) and not to expect that I could do both in one visit (also fine). He then said, the appt will be 15 min tops, so it's not a time to ask questions. I said, of course I want to be able to ask a couple questions, espec bc of eye irritation lately. He said, "I see your insurance is (x) and that only pays us like $60 per visit. We can't give patients longer than 15, we'd go out of business" (!) I couldn't believe it. The rudeness and the gall of mentioning my coverage resulted in poor profit for them. I suggested he NOT say those things to new or returning patients and he said he was trying to manage expectations, that patients "always complain" they want to be seen longer but it's not doable. Talk about poor patient relations/ customer service. I realize what the medical system is up against w insurance is rough, but never has a public-facing clinic employee been so dissuading about the care their provider provides. I'm so glad I found this optometry practice! Today was my first visit, and I am excited to continue to come back. The whole experience was wonderful from start to finish and efficient. My entire visit only took 30 mins. Other optometrists I had seen kept me waiting for 1-2 hours. So, it was great that I could go on my lunch break and be back to work fast. The office is so beautiful. Dr. John is a really personable doctor! He makes you feel really comfortable, and he's a really funny, cool guy. His front desk staff were also super nice and scheduling the initial appt was easy and quick over the phone. read more

I've been going to see Dr. Lamothe for two years now and am really impressed by the practice. You can tell Dr. Lamothe really cares about his patients, as he is honest and doesn't try to unnecessarily sell you a product. He is quite personable and works quickly with vast knowledge. I am quite happy with my prescription (both glasses and contacts), and boy do I need a great optometrist since I am staring at a computer all day. My yearly exam was today, which (hopefully future readers will look back to a time without coronavirus) was bleak with social distancing and coronavirus. But as soon as I sat down, Dr. Lamothe explained all the protocols that the office took to disinfect and clean all the highly touched places in the office. I have been a patient there for the past two years. I emailed him a question about getting drops for my eyes (which we talked about at my last appointment.) He has been responding to me at 1AM and 11PM sending me harassing emails stating "your gonna loose your Vision" and "Let me explain, if your contacts are an issue then your a mess. I don't want you pack as a patient. wear glasses. do not email me again." Initially his office said he got hacked and that he would be calling me to apologize and explain. He never called and he never sent anything out to his patients saying his work email was compromise. At this point I doubt it was a hack and this is just how he is behaving. read more

I recently got my eyes checked at Washington Eye Associates and had a very positive experience. Making an appointment was super easy and I was able to get one for the next week. The office is really hip and swanky, not what you expect at an optometrist! The folks here are very professional to and Dr Lamothe took me in right away. I got my vision tested and also a couple of other eye tests done too. I was able to walk out with a prescription in my hand fairly quickly! They do have a limited number of frames on display but I was not interested in them as I got my glasses made from elsewhere. I would highly recommend this place for an optometrist visit! read more

Dr. Lamothe is awesome! I've been seeing him for over 3 years. He is so attentive and caring. He also doesn't push products and is very honest. I needed contacts in a pinch for my wedding a couple years ago and because I needed special ones that were going to take longer to get in, he just gave me samples to use for the big day and the honeymoon. I recently saw him during covid times and the practice is not crowded, clean, and I felt safe. I was worried about my glasses but he told me he's happy with my lenses even though they're 2 years old. I think other practices would've tried hard to make me buy new frames and lenses. I switched insurances and his practice is out-of-network for me but I really couldn't go anywhere else to find this level of service. His cash-based prices are very fair. I've been going to Washington Eye Doctors for a few years and the only issue I've had until recently is that no one picks up the phone. Two years ago, they made my first pair of progressive lenses and they were ground correctly. In October of last year, I went back to get another pair of glasses and that is when the problems arose. Dr. Lamothe sent my lenses to a lab that accepts my insurance. They came back with the wrong prescription. This happened three times and the errors were significant. The lab also broke my original frames, so I had to buy another pair and get reimbursed for them. My complaint is that once the glasses came back to Washington Eye Associates, no quality check was done. I had to find out for myself after wearing them for a day or two that there were problems. Clearly, no intelligent quality check was done by the lab. And I don't care if the lab the doctor uses is garbage, I contracted with my eye doctor to obtain a pair of glasses and expect a pair within a reasonable time. Dr. Lamothe said he'd cut the lenses himself the last time they came back incorrect, but that last set I received were still cut incorrectly. My guess is that he sent them back to the same lab. This was in January and I simply gave up, planning to come back in a month or so after work calmed down (he has no Saturday hours and I was sick of killing my work day to deal with this). Then the pandemic hit. I went back to him recently and let him know the issue and he said he could give me a discount on a new set of lenses - mind you the original ones I ordered were never properly made. I also had him remove and insert another right lens made in one of his earlier attempts to see if that would help (it didn't), but he loosened the frame so much the lens now rattles around in it! So, I said I'd think about it then emailed him to ask that since none of this is my problem, he should make me a new pair to actually provide me with what I paid for. He responded via email that he disagreed with me and said he wouldn't see me as a patient anymore and would look into a refund. Wow, a bit touchy. But then I received a few odd emails from him and at first I was pretty sure his email account has been hacked as I can't imagine he would respond in such an unprofessional manner. I've left a message and called again and spoke with the office manager about this issue but haven't heard back from him. So I don't know if his original email was actually from him or not. He hasn't called me back so perhaps the crazy emails were from him. In fact, I see another review from May where this was an issue too and where the patient never received a follow up call. This is no way to run a business. It's unethical. If you are busy professional and have a tricky prescription then steer clear of Washington Eye Associates. At the end of the day, you'll spend money on a pair of lenses that you can't wear. read more

I love Dr. Lamothe and his staff. I've been seeing him for a while to treat my dry eye, and he is the only one that I've had success with. I recently did Lipiflow to complement my other treatments, and it was great. My eyes are doing much better and I can wear contacts more often now. I also get my annual eye exams here and everything has been great. The optical staff is friendly and they offer a curated selection of stylish glasses. Reception staff is also super friendly. After going to a competitor across the street, I decided to try out Dr. Lamothe at Washington Eye Associates. The office is located in an older building near Farragut North, but the office itself looks brand new. The staff really makes an effort to keep everything clean and tidy in the waiting room, and the examination room was spotless. Dr. Lamothe is friendly and one of the most competent eye doctors I've had. I've been wearing glasses since I was ten and have a very high prescription. Many of Dr. Lamothe's patients also have high prescriptions, so he was able to help me efficiently. He made me feel comfortable in the office and seemed to have a genuine interest in my eye health and care. Lasik was recommended but not imposed, and he did not push when I said I wasn't interested at this point. Moreover, Dr. Lamothe and his staff worked to ensure that my insurance covered the cost of my lenses. I had a big issue with my previous eye doctor's staff upselling their contacts and glasses at every moment and made it difficult and expensive to go through them. I did not have this issue at Washington Eye Associates, and they shipped my contacts directly to my apartment. I will continue to use Dr. Lamothe as my primary eye doctor, and I would recommend everyone else in the D.C. area do the same. Note that the office is not on Zocdoc (like my previous eye doctor who I liked less), but you can call their very friendly office to make a reservation. It's worth it. read more

I've been wearing glasses since I was in middle school so I've met my fair share of eye doctors and their staffs. When my annual was due and my supply of contact lenses was starting to run out, I searched for a new eye doctor with due diligence after my horrendous experience with Lens Crafters last year. I found Dr. Lamothe's office on Yelp and it looked like the majority of reviewers had good experiences with Dr. Lamothe so I made an appointment. My time with Dr. Lamothe was very brief; I felt like he rushed through my appointment. However, he answered all my questions and concerns in the little time I had with him. Despite of my short time with Dr. Lamothe, my entire appointment lasted two hours because after I sat down with Juan (the office manager?), it all went downhill from there. He tried to Google search the online vendor that I use to order my lenses from, but he couldn't find it so I had to go into my emails and searched through my folders from the previous year to find a receipt. I was shocked that an eye doctor's office did not have a list prepared with all the online vendors, especially since he was willing to match the price. Then when I thought I could walk out, I looked at the receipt Juan handed me and realized my name was completely misspelled so I asked the receptionist to correct it. Somehow in doing so, she deleted my last name so when she had to go back into the database to locate my chart again, she could not find it. The only saving grace of Dr. Lamothe's office is that my contact lenses arrived a day earlier than the original estimate. At this point, I cannot say if I'm willing to visit Dr. Lamothe's again, especially with so many other options in the area. read more

As soon as I walked in I was greeted warmly. The staff are very professional and friendly. Dr. Lothe took his time and gave me a thorough exam. He asked very relevant questions and was also incredibly friendly. I felt very safe there as there only two other people, and the space was very clean. Dr. Lamothe was excellent, but I am completely outraged by the sales associate. Not sure of the spelling but his name was pronounced "Soh." I wanted inexpensive glasses that would be covered as much as possible by my insurance. I did not want any extra bells and whistles. I was told by my coworkers who all have the same insurance as me who came to Washington Eye Associates that someone would help me and tell me what would be the best options with my insurance. They all paid less than $100 on glasses, which is what I had budgeted. Soh spent a few minutes picking out frames for me without explaining why he was picking them or asking what I wanted. He also mumbled a couple rude jokes about the fact that I wasn't very enthusiastic about the frames and that I hadn't purchased new glasses in four years. (I would ask him to repeat what he said and he would respond "Nothing.") I didn't love the frames he picked but I assumed they would be inexpensive with insurance so it didn't matter. He then started adding features for the lenses I didn't want, related to thickness and reflectiveness. He didn't ask my permission, he just said I "needed" those things. When he told me my total was nearly $600, I told him I couldn't afford that. He rudely said he would "explain it to you one more time," pointing out that I didn't understand insurance or the deal I was getting. When I said I would not be buying this he said "what if the frames were less money, like..." trying to think of an amount. I felt like I was at a car dealership. I expected help, not to be taken advantage of. I left without purchasing new glasses, which I had fully intended to do. I selected contacts, since my insurance coverage would apply to either glasses or 4 months of contacts. Soh tried to talk me out of getting contacts several times, and while I trusted him at first, I now assume he did so because it meant I wouldn't be buying glasses there. He said he will call me when the contacts are ready but I wasn't going to wait on the reviews. I wish I could rate that part of Washington Eye Associates separately from the rest of the practice, which deserves 5 stars! I'll go to Warby Parker for the glasses instead I guess. read more

Dr. Lamothe has been my Optometrist for several years. I would see no one else. He is personable, extremely knowledgeable and on the cutting edge of his profession. I have never been rushed or had anything less than a thorough, high quality exam. His staff is highly competent and have managed to get me in quickly when the need arises. He spends significant time gathering my history, providing in-depth examination and recommendations. Contact lenses and eye glasses are in-office and lenses can be shipped to your home. I had to waited for 30min after my scheduled appointment to be seen. Not only that but no one communicated to me throughout the time I was waiting. If I was empowered to decide for myself if I wanted to wait or perhaps reschedule I might feel less disappointed. I think Its highly disrespectful to make customers pay a fee for last minute changes and not hold the practice to a similar standard. Furthermore, I was not offered anything by way of amends with the exception of a meek apology from the provider that saw me (not the doctor I had the appointment with, Dr. Lamothe) and the front desk clerk. There was no real resolution. All of that disappointment aside the provider (Dr. Raja) that took over my appointment was very kind and helpful. She was professional despite having to shoulder the burden of covering for her colleague who didn't seem to have a care about time management and respect for other patients. I was very grateful for her time. Please note: This was my third time to the clinic and I will admit this was not my experience previously. Maybe things have gone sour since my last check up? I also want to add how much I appreciate the efforts of the front desk staff in helping with insurance questions. I went here after moving to the area and needing a new eye doctor. I found this place because it had some great reviews and decided to give it a try. This is by far the best experience I have had at an eye doctor before. Nick at the front desk was so friendly in checking me in, took a lot of time to help me pick out glasses frames, and took the time to explain to me line by line what my insurance covered and how to best utilize my benefits. Dr. Raja was so friendly and professional during my eye exam, she took the time to answer all of my questions and really took the time to give me a throughout exam that was also very time efficient. This is the first review I've ever written, but I must say I was very much taken aback by the customer service here. My contact lens exam was standard last year (Nov 2022), though when I asked for an adjustment since my prescription strength was drastically reduced per the doctor (and I ended up not see clearly), the office decided to stop taking my call, and sent me an unkind text not to book (while still asking I call to make my annual appointment - odd!). In retrospect, I noticed this discourteous attitude when I declined to place a year-long contact order immediately after leaving my first appointment. I'd strongly recommend anyone not wishing to experience the rude and unpleasant experience of this eye healthcare provider get in touch with many, many of the wonderful optometrists office in the DC area instead. I know I'll be returning to my trusted one after this, and letting any friends in the same boat know to steer clear of this office. read more

I understand we're in the era of COVID-19 and things are operating a little differently, however, in my 20 years of wearing eye glasses I have never had such an overall bad experience with an eye doctor. First, my appointment was completely rushed and I left not totally confident in my prescription. Now, after waiting 3 weeks, my glasses still have not arrived. I've never waited longer than maybe 5 days for glasses to arrive. After 3 weeks, my glasses haven't arrived and I continue to get the same runaround, "looks like your glasses shipped yesterday, and they should be here tomorrow." I'm very disappointed that my glasses have taken so long, and at this point it looks like it'll be a month of waiting before I get my glasses that cost well over $1,000. Save yourself some time and give yourself peace of mind. Go somewhere else. Edit: My original appointment was on June 24. I'm writing this on July 14. I still haven't received my glasses. Not sure why Dr. L would insinuate I'm lying about the total price of my glasses ($1,345), but that's another odd interaction. read more

I have been a patient of Dr. Lamothe for a few years and he (and his team) have been nothing but fantastic, and have really gone above and beyond. For instance I saw him for an eye issue days before I had to travel for thanksgiving (he got me in immediately) and not only did he fix my issue by prescribing the correct drops, but also gave me his cell number and told me not to hesitate to reach out (over thanksgiving when HE was traveling to see family) if anything else came up. More recently when I came in for an exam and to order contacts the front desk really helped me out by helping me avoid certain shipping issues I have been having due to USPS issues in my area. I like Dr. Lamothe, but his support staff needs an improvement. I went here last year for the first time and had a pleasant experience save for the front desk employee, who was a little cold and slightly aggressive. The dude working that day, who has also been complained about in other people's reviews, isn't the most welcoming personality. The best way to describe him is gruff. Regardless, finding a good eye doctor is hard, so I planned on going back to Dr. Lamothe again this year. I went online and requested an appointment. I then received an automatic email reply telling me that someone from the office would reach out to me to let me know whether my requested appointment time was available. Two weeks went by and I heard nothing. So two days ago I sent an email to their admin email account telling them that although I never heard back about my appointment, I was still interested in setting one up. No response. Like other reviews, Dr. Lamothe is great... his team of unprofessional staff, not so much. What a shame that Dr. Lamothe's practice has to be driven down by the front house crew. I was referred to WEA by my fiance. He had a great experience, so I was sure to, as well, right? Not so much. I have been wearing glasses and contacts for about 15 years so I understand the drill. Sadly, this operation will leave you feeling like you had a just bought a car. Remember how painful that was? Dealing with the finance guy at a dealership? Or having to be pushed around by the service team trying to sell you on more things? Before going into my eye exam, the front desk person let me know what my insurance would cover. That was nice to know although he did mention that my insurance would cover $XXX of my yearly contacts supply. I let him know that I get a really great price elsewhere and that I might not order through them. He said "that's my Contacts Guy, he can help you after your exam". Ok. My eye exam was rushed, but understandably so as I don't require a lot, my eyes haven't changed that much, and why would Dr. Lamothe talk to me about Lasik or other optional procedures when that would detract from his business (even though I asked him to). In the 20 minutes that I spent with him, he seemed knowledgeable and professional. After my exam, I met with the Contacts Guy who tried time and time again to sell me on purchasing contacts through them. I let them know that I get a better price elsewhere but through his lack luster negotiations, it was apparent that they just wanted the insurance money. He actually said "well, the insurance money is free money, so what's it matter to you?" Really? The space is beautiful. The location is so convenient. I am very happy with my glasses. I already had done eye exam in a different place, and had purchased my frames online. All I needed was to get the correct lenses put into the frames, and Washington Eye Associates had no problem with that. It took less than 15 minutes to calculate the cost with insurance, make measurements and drop them off. I just got them back, and they are perfect. Washington Eye Associates got my glasses done is a week, with no delays. When I went to pick them up, it didn't take more than 3 minutes. So far so good. read more

This place gets constant 5 star reviews for a reason. First off, you enter Washington Eye Associates and it's beautious. Modern, simple, professional. Second, the friendliest receptionist ever greets you by name even when it's your first time to the practice. Of course she has referenced her calendar and knows who is coming in when, but I appreciate this kind of attention to detail. I wish I remembered her name because she is seriously awesome. Hands down the friendliest receptionist I have ever met, but not overly friendly. She is the 'just right' of friendly receptionists. Third, Dr. Lamothe is a terrific eye doctor. He is very knowledgeable, cordial, and receptive to any and all questions. Plus, he has French bulldogs. There's a winner right there. Logistics: super convenient location in between Farragut North and Dupont metro stops. Most types of insurance are accepted, and they also accept discount plans. I visited Dr. Lamothe for the first time a few weeks ago, mainly based on the reviews here at Yelp. My first visit was okay. I had to wait in the front, wait in the back, and finally saw the Doctor (I was mildly annoyed at that point). He was very nice and apologized. He examined my eyes, we discussed my current contacts, and he recommended me to switch to a different kind of contact in the same brand as I currently use. He gave me all the reasons, and I said sure. The reasons made sense. So he gave me a trial pair and was like, "you don't need to come in again...most of my patients have no problems with these, so you'll be fine." In the past when I've switched contact lenses, I always had a follow up, so I thought it was a bit strange that he didn't want me to come back. But to be honest, I had a lot going on, so I was actually kind of glad not to have another appointment added to my plate. A week after wearing them, my new lenses were irritating my eyes, so I put in an old pair I had and used them while I went out of town. When I returned, I decided to wear my new lenses for a few hours one night to make sure they were okay, and they felt fine. The next day I put in my old lenses and went to work. A few hours later, my eyes were bloodshot and red and looked terrible. So I called the doctor and went in. It turns out I am intolerant to the material the new lenses are made of...they are completely different than the old ones. I'm glad I decided to go in. So the Doctor gave me a week supply of lenses and they ordered me a new set. The receptionist said they would call when they arrived. I waited and waited...so I called. She would call me back. The next day I called again...she would call me back. The next day I just walked over because if they weren't in, he was going to have to give me more to tide me past the long weekend. They were in (why no call?) and so I exchanged my old ones for new ones. She said, "It's an even exchange." I said, No...my old lenses are significantly less expensive than the new ones...and so she credited my card. I'm not sure if I'd see Dr. L again...he's very nice, and it's a very nice and convenient office. I kind of feel like he dropped the ball on me though. We'll have to see. read more

I went to Washington Eye Associates base on other Yelp reviews. Overall great experience but did end up leaving slightly annoyed. Dr Lamothe was nice, knowledgeable and apologetic for long wait. Douglas help me find a great pair of frames without pushing. They have nice selection of unique frames that suit many styles. The front desk staff was nice but they did have me waiting for too long. Seemed like I was forgotten sitting there with my eyes dilated until I spoke up. Maybe they were overbooked? I wished for more seamless experience and 2 hours is far too long for just an annual eye exam. Still solid 4, would be 5 but need to work on seamless experience. read more

I've been going to Dr. Lamothe at Washington Eye Associates for two years. Dr. Lamothe is really friendly and very professional. He comes across as extremely knowledgeable and has done a great job working with my off the charts high astigmatism to find contacts that will work for me. He's also really good about making sure he's answered all your questions and discussed all your options with you. The receptionist here is also very friendly and helpful. She is prompt about returning phone calls and actually checks the office voicemail unlike other medical offices I've dealt with. She also adjusted my frames for me when I stopped by and Dr. Lamothe wasn't in. I would recommend calling ahead to schedule appointments with Dr. Lamothe since he's not always in during all business hours. However, I was able to get an appointment the same day at the time I wanted the last time I called. An added bonus is that they will price match contacts. I haven't had to do that though since they charged less for my contacts than what I'd found at the online discount retailers. read more

Dr. Lamonthe is amazing - very kind and takes the time to help you find the right frames. He even fit me in at the last minute after another doctor in his office conducted a vision test and gave me a prescription that was completely off-base from what I needed. Unfortunately, the rest of his staff are not. They were completely unhelpful, hard to get a hold of, told me I must just be "adjusting to the prescription" that was wrong, and scraped up the entire inside part of one of my glasses frames when putting in new lenses. I recently moved to DC and once my new health insurance kicked in, I started scouring Yelp for recommendations of doctors and dentists. That's how I found Dr. Lamothe and Washington Eye Associates! My experience from start to finish was excellent. The receptionist was incredibly friendly and professional, both over the phone and in person. This sets her apart from literally every other receptionist I have dealt with thus far in DC. She really was lovely. It didn't take long at all to set up an appointment, which was great. Most of the doctors I'm trying to see in DC take nearly a month to get in! Dr. Lamothe was lovely. He works fast but talks you through every part of the exam, which I appreciated. There are not enough positive things to say about this office. I have been a patient here for two years now, and I recently saw Dr. Raja. She was great during my exam and really worked to get my prescriptions right. I have sensitive eyes, so it can be tricky. Then, when I made the mistake of getting glasses from Warby Parker, which ended up being very wrong and straining my eyes, the office was great about helping me figure out an alternative way to be able to get new glasses. For me, it is important to feel heard and valued as a patient and a customer, so I appreciate the care I get from this office. read more

While Dr. Lamothe was very helpful once he saw me, I was waiting for 50 minutes to be seen. I also had to wait a considerable about of time (20 minutes) to be helped with my glasses frames. The man who helped me took about 15 minutes explaining to me why I should not get new frames. I decided to take my business elsewhere for the frames because I didn't love their selection and I couldn't bring myself to spend hundreds of dollars somewhere that was trying to convince me not to. If you have the time, it's worth the wait for Dr. Lamothe because I'm sure he treats all his patients like he treated me: calm, knowledgeable and took his time explaining what was wrong with my eyes. Just had my first exam with Dr.Lamothe and it made my day. Let me preface this by saying I HATE eye exams. My last exam was two years ago and I hated it so much I've avoided an eye exam until now. Long story short, the two gentleman at the desk were very welcoming, professional and helpful. The office is clean, modern and quiet. Dr. Lamothe is very friendly, funny and professional. I thought I'd need a stronger prescription, but he said my eyes were better than his! He answered any and all questions I had, explained the make up of my eye and proved to be very reassuring and informative. My exam was quick which I didn't mind as it was my lunch break. I love the technology used during the eye exam and I'll definitely be back in the recommended 1-2 years. Washington Eye Associates definitely made an enjoyable experience.
