Breakfast with the locals. Family restaurant with made to order selections. I had two eggs scrambled with cheese, hash browns, sausage, and raisin toast. Good service. Food delivered quickly and correctly. Reasonable prices. Kid menu too.

It looked promising when we walked in and the decor was so cute with license plates and stoplights. It looked promising when the wait staff were very nice and delivered an extensive menu. That's where promising ended. I ordered mozzarella sticks with marinara, a dinner salad and a side of cottage cheese. Pretty simple, right? The waitress asked what I wanted on the salad??? I said hard boiled egg, tomatoes, cucumber, whatever vegetables they had. She sort of shook her head as if she did not know what veggies they had. I ordered a side of blue cheese dressing. Mother in law ordered a grilled chicken salad. Mozzarella sticks took 25 minutes? I actually had to leave to get our laundry caus we were waiting so long. Came back to lukewarm NASTY mozzarella sticks that we did not finish. The marinara was underwhelming and warmer than the cheese sticks. Gross. Then we wait another 10-15 minutes wondering where the heck our simple salads are. The staff would not make eye contact. We kept looking for someone who would check our order and gave up. Finally after 45 min of waiting we get our "salads" YUCK. Mine we the tiniest bowl of white / pale green iceberg lettuce. A piece of white onion. A small plastic container of dressing sat on top of the sad lettuce. THAT WAS IT. Where are the vegetables I asked for? I look at the salad my MIL got and THERE was my hard boiled egg. There were the chopped vegetables. Luckily she offered to share her egg and vegetables with me. My salad was NASTY. She did not like hers, it was covered in melted cheese. Only reason I gave it two stars instead of one is because the waitresses were very nice. It wasn't their fault the kitchen staff can't make salad.

The service and food arrival was lighting fast, which is a tell tale sign of poor food. The omelet we got was swimming in grease/oil. It was mostly cheese and had very little else. The coffee is unremarkable. My scramble eggs were unseasoned and not fluffy. Skip this joint if you can.

Booths can seat 6 guests and tables seat 4 guests. There is also full bar service and seating. The waitress answered our questions about the various menu items. We tried some sides and sandwiches as well as a couple of desserts. Mac n cheese was creamy and delicious. The tomato bisque soup was hot and thick. The broccolini was ok. It could have used some seasoning or a sprinkle of Parmesan. The grilled chicken club was very good. The skillet cookie was served warm with ice cream and chocolate fudge. The cinnamon sprinkled pretzels were 2 large pretzels with a light dusting of cinnamon and sugar accompanied by a chocolate and a caramel sauce. In my opinion the pretzels should have had a heavier dusting of cinnamon sugar mixture. They were also a little tough. Why not partner with another small business, Swanee's, and serve their amazingly soft pretzels? Or pretzel bites? I would dine here again and try some of the other entrees. Since it is still winter the rooftop seating is closed. The large windows overlook the shops and small businesses on the square.

Review Visit: February 10th, 2020…read more Eli's has opened a coffee shop in Metamora on some historic grounds. A long, long time ago in a city far away, there was a coffeehouse named Historic Grounds. Upon those grounds, one was able to find delicious coffees and baked goods. As time passed, people grew older and wanted to retire to a simple life. With that, Historic Grounds became just that. A page in the history books of Metamora. But, all was not lost for the building that was permanently etched with the aromatic scents of coffee beans and cookies. Eli's Coffee House, founded out of Morton, IL, caught wind of the vacancy and decided to expand it's business enterprise there. Finally the day came for me to visit one of my old coffeehouses and see if the new place does the old justice. Having had Eli's before and it being a good experience, I went in with some slightly higher than normal expectations for a new place. The second I entered, I could tell that Eli's made the place their own without covering up the antique-feel of the aged building. In place of the old normal counter was a big jetting one that offered barista access from multiple sides. Affixed to the wall was a giant and well-designed menu offering coffees in your usual varieties along with some yummy-sounding food options. Running on 3 hours of sleep, I chatted with the ladies working behind the counter, telling them of my much-needed need for some coffee if I was going to be in any state of awake to talk with my friend. Their patience was immeasurable as I looked over the menu longer than I should've and settled on just a black coffee. Too tired to try and order anything more complex, they offered me the pipping hot coffee in an Eli's-branded mug. I found my friend on the other side of the wall that cuts the coffeehouse in almost two. I quickly took a seat and blew on my coffee to cool it down while I woke up enough to have a conversation with my friend. Sensing one cup wouldn't do, I revisited the counter after I drained my first cup and expected to pay for a refill. The lovely barista took my cup and refilled it with the black liquid I so desired. I asked if I owed her anything and she said it was free. Free refills on great black coffee. I was truly in heaven. Eli's has taken a former great coffeehouse and kept the spirit alive. While they've definitely added their identity to the interior, they are tasteful upgrades and changes. Metamora is the kind of town that revels in it's history and small town vibe; them keeping a lot of the original feel and artwork on the walls was a wise decision. They even kept the Historic Grounds logo that is painted on the side wall. While I was standing in line for my refill, I was browsing over the food options and was drawn to The Southern Comfort melt. I loved every single ingredient on the list. Chicken with melted white cheddar, apples and brown sugar BBQ... give me 2 of those. One for lunch and one for dinner later. So, I will definitely be back to try out their food and baked goods. When I do, I will update this post with probably a perfect 5/5 and details on how the food tasted. Until then, stay caffeinated.

Has SARS resurfaced in the Playplace, making this page an outlet for a pressing public health announcement? You've all consumed McDonald's and you've all loved it. Don't kid yourself. Find me a person that claims to have joyfully abstained from their food within the past 10 years and you'll show me a filthy liar. As a rotten, moribund society, we are far more unified in our consumption of dilapidated trash than any sort of cultural or ideological peaceful co-existence. We know this stuff is killing us, and we devour it with impunity. Me, I'm one of those chipper dudes that just wants to see the world burn. I'm grateful for the fact that virtually any hospitable region of the US has a McDonald's within a 10 mile radius. When I'm self-medicating with poisonous substances to ease the cerebral burn of contemporary living, there's nothing better than stumbling into this place with 10 dollars, getting 2,000 calories worth of certifiably edible material that resembles food, and cramming it into my mouth in order to hasten my own much-awaited demise.
