I was born and raised in the Portland area and left in 2016 (right before the city really went downhill). I saw the story on national news about how they were looted by criminals and many gullible residents of Portland support criminals over law abiding citizens. They had to leave downtown for security reasons and many luxury brands such as Omega and Breitling had to drop them from being their authorized retailers since they require window displays and now they are an appointment only retailer. I was visiting Portland last week and I bought a Omega Railmaster with them since it was a good deal. I recently bought an Aqua Terra 3 months ago and was going to wait until next year for my next watch. The deal on the Railmaster was great and I really wanted to support a local business from my hometown. Honestly I think that city of Portland is too lucky to have them and they don't deserve them and they would be much more appreciated in a different market! This is really the only place to go in Portland for mechanical watch knowledge. Jewelry stores and online sell but do not know. The world of watches, if not your mobile phone, as of today, are divided in three. Smart watches, small mobile computers from the Apples and Samsungs of the world. Some are synchronized with the most accurate satellite time sources. They are on the rise. Electronic watches which depend on small watch batteries for their operation. They are inexpensive to moderately priced. Very accurate. 99% or more of the watches in the world. Mechanical watches are the old school option. Driven by springs, they tick. Most are "automatic" - wound by their motion on the body. They are not synchronized with satellite and atomic time sources. They are not accurate, but they are a statement. Although Alex can replace watch batteries and repair some electronic watches, their specialty is mechanical watches. There are many, many lines, and Alex sells new, and some used of many of the lines. They do repair and maintenance of mechanical watches. The mechanical watch making world is almost exclusively based in Switzerland. The heart of the watch is the movement, all the springs, weights, gears, the body and the screws holding it in alignment. We are talking tweezers and magnifying glasses for the parts. The case, back, hands, crown, face and band are built around the movement. It takes some intense engineering to design, manufacture precise parts, assemble and calibrate the movement. So although there are a few hundred mechanical watch brands, there are a much smaller number of companies making the movements for all those brands. Rolex, which Alex loves, makes their own movements. Quality and durable. Rolex is not a visual design leader, they are the IBM or Ford. But hey, you never will be fired for buying a Rolex! Surprisingly, Swatch is one of the largest makers of mechanical movements, complementing their electronic watches. Their mechanical movement division is ETA. ETA movements go by numbers. They have been the supplier of those movements to competitors for years, and that may change. So ETA movements are built into many to most brand mechanical watches. I am a fan of the the Oris brand of watches. They use ETA movements, they are pretty and they are moderately priced. Alex sells them and I have bought them here! So when you are looking at at a mechanical watch, a good question to ask is who made the movement. Then the next question is how long will parts or the complete drop in movement be available. I would do your own research for the second question independent of watch dealers. In watches, there are the technical and bold chronometers and diver watches, and then there are the more formal dress watches. You have to decide for yourself on that. And by the way, men and women can own each! Also keep in mind that new watches decline in value once they leave the store. The vintage value kicks in a good 20 years down the road. So buy and hold. How it should be! If you have a vintage watch; the kind that, when you hold it up to your ear, ticks, and at the moment it's not ticking, Watchworks is where you want to take it. They'll be happy to put a battery in you quartz job too, but if it ticks. these are the guys to see. Mechanical watches need annual service otherwise they will slow down and finally stop running altogether. They have explained to me why that happens in detail several times, but I'm always to distracted by all of the watches I don't own to listen. They've serviced my vintage1960s Omega Seamaster several times and it always comes back looking new and running perfectly. I've been less happy with my Omega Speedmaster, which is a chronograph. They tell me chronographs are much more complex and difficult to service - which makes perfect sense, and I'm sure is true. But the price to service this thing 1/4 the cost of the watch- yikes! I don't blame Watchworks for that because I'm the idiot who bought a mechanical chronograph, and I didn't buy it from Watchworks, but they should have a warning on the box - "Warning: You are entering a world of pain - Idiot". One of these days I'll have them service it, sell it to some other idiot, and buy a quartz watch that I can afford to service. read more

I've taken an omega here a couple times over the last year both for repairs. Admittedly, the first experience wasn't the greatest they broke it even more and neglected to tell me until I called. They fixed the issue in a somewhat timely manner. The second time was for a simple fix which they were able to fix there on the spot and in a timely manner. Overall they're a good shop that charges very reasonable rates for repair. I highly recommend watch works no matter what kind of watch you're repairing. She handed me over to Max who continued to educate me on how to know the real deal and just how some watches operate in general. They never made me feel like an idiot for bringimg in cheap replicas and instead went the other direction and gave me a case for one of the watches free of charge. Not a good experience for watch repair. Three employees pounced on how they could not fix my watch and more concerned with giving a disclosure about what they can and cannot do than they were about trying to find the parts necessary to do the repair. Granted European ceramic watches may not be ideal for repairs; but, you are Watchworks, right? Once they gave the disclosure about how hammering would be involved (which is a risk you take) then they recognized they didn't have the pin sleeves necessary to make the repair. That's cool too; but, no effort or attempt to help locate or direct me to how I could locate the sleeves to get if fixed. Bottom line, I got a clear message they don't make money doing repairs; however, if you are in the market to REPLACE the watch welcome to our showcase. Sentimental value on this timepeice led me to a second opion who assisted in tracking down the manufacturer in Amsterdam where we are currently waiting for extra pins and sleeves to arrive. This second opinon will make minimal money on the repair considering the time spent helping me track this down. But, he will get my future business as well as the business of anyone I know who needs watch repair or to purchase a timepiece. Customer service does exist = just not at Watchworks unless you want to PURCHASE! Second opinions on repairs highly recommended. read more

A wonderful collection of fine new and vintage watches in Portland. An unexpected gem in a city populated mainly by mall stores and boring mid-level brands. Authorized Dealer for Bell & Ross. They have a fair selection, but could be a bit more diverse and while the prices seemed a bit high on some pieces, I understand that we've all gotten used to internet prices which rarely can be duplicated in a "brick & mortar" business, so this extra expense is justifiable simply for the opportunity to buy in person. The expertise Alex displays on nearly all watch brands is encyclopedic, which also adds value to any purchase. I revised my previous review to reflect yet another example of outstanding service I received at the shop. On my last visit Alex showed me one of my "Grail watches" and quoted a price that was still more than I probably should be spending on a watch, but the opportunity to own it was one I couldn't pass up. After sleeping on it I returned to the shop with credit card in hand, only for Alex to do some online research and finding that the watch was very likely now worth more than he anticipated. Ever the gentleman, he honored the original price which is a rare and true mark of world-class service. Alex has done a great job at creating a welcoming and well-designed shop featuring unique artwork and a sensible layout. Highly recommended to any local collectors or those who may be visiting town.
