They're open from 6am-4pm, which I love because I can stop by and pick up fresh rice cakes and kimbap to start my day. Everything is made fresh and is so comforting. First thing my husband said was that the Korean lady who answered the phone speaks in a very informal way (kind of like, "What do you want?"). But in person every time, they gave been pleasant and throw in a free tray of rice cakes with large orders. We would recommend them for rice cakes, especially for dol (dohl) or 100th day (baekil) events. We've used them every time for our baby's traditional Korean events and have not been disappointed. They can do the big heart cakes (I believe hearts can come in pink, blue or green), although I wish they could do the baek (百) characters too. Came here for New Years Ttok! I initially called another rice cake place but unfortunately, they were completely sold out in the morning when I called around 11am. This place had few options by the time I went there which was a relief! Plus they also had some other Korean new year side dishes which I picked up those items as well. Not all tteok is created equal - this shop's tteok is one of my favorites - would love it if they had more than one location. My mom and I love the purple rice tteok especially here. It has a fantastic, pillowy, soft, chewy consistency, plenty of gentle, sweet, nutty flavor, and plenty of mix-ins (beans and nuts). When I come I go around the building to the back door, and that seems standard. There's usually parking. This is really disappointing. We get their rice cakes from a grocery store and after my child took a bite from it a hair strand came out. She literally asked what this was. I was thinking this can't be real but it was. The hair was literally colored in green due to color of the rice cake. Growing up and living with my grandma, I didn't get to eat pies, ice cream sundaes, cookies for dessert like my classmates for they had grandmas like Mrs. Marie Callendar. Instead I had to eat the traditional Korean dessert/snack, called duk, which is a variety of non sweet/semi-sweet rice cakes often served at birthdays, get togethers, New Year's Day and special events. Right when you walk in the back parking lot door, (front door is blocked by storage carts) you can't go more than 10 steps. That is how cramped and small it is. Then most likely, the manager or owner, will come out and help you. Watermill Rice Cake mainly offers duk, kimchi, various other side dishes, and kimbap (Korean rice rolls). I forgot how much the kimbap rolls were (most likely $4 even). Soybean paste in a half gallon glass jar is $15 to make stew. Probably will last a few years since it doesn't expire. As Thanksgiving approaches, and to get a sense of a Korean familiy Thanksgiving dinner (if they do celebrate the beloved holiday), common entrees will most likely include turkey, kimchi as a side, and duk as dessert. I had the pleasure of tasting Windmill's rice cakes at a Korean Church function and discovered a flavor that I'd never seen nor tasted before. I'm not even sure what's all in it but it's freaking incredible. So since my first taste, I now drive 4 hours from another state every few months to get my fix. Everything here is sooo good! While they specialize in Korean rice cakes (dduk), their Korean catering is amazing, the food is fresh, flavorful, and the portions are huge. Obviously, their Korean rice cake variety is plentiful and the dduk is so soft and fluffy and perfectly flavored, not overly sweet, just right. Even the kimbap is so fresh and the quality of the rice they use is the best. Usually, after refrigerating kimbap the rice gets all hard and needs to be thrown out, but not theirs, even after being refrigerated, the rice is still soft. I happened to be in the area so I thought what the hell.. I'll go check it out and see if it's any good. The dduk is AWESOME. The description by Mint T. was pretty on point. The entrance is in the back; you're better off bringing a friend who is Korean and knows how to speak Korean and pick out rice cake. They have an extremely limited selection which is essentially a couple shelves just by the door. By the looks of it, the types will vary each day. It's not really a store.. it's basically a kitchen with some stuff for sale at the "front" (which is really the back) with no prices. Key is to look for the warm ones.. oooh they're sooo good. I picked up one with korean pumpkin and other veggies in it.. it's probably the best i've ever tasted. They sell korean homemade wontons, the long plain rice cake, several types with different bean powders, and the flat plain ones. There's small rounded square rice cakes which were made from brown rice.. omg delicious. Couple of random other things.. I went around 2pm and there was a decent selection but I imagine the morning being the best. They had kimbap, jook, etc. This is definitely the real deal. Not that expensive either.. cheaper than some korean markets that I've been to. Next time I'm dragging my mom down to see what their rice cake making schedule is. NOM. DELICIOUS! So normally i dont really review... but this place is now the worst. Such a shame... Management: 0/5 I used to come here all the time cause the previous owner, grandma, was so great (gave out freebies, talked to you, etc.) And i used to live not too far... But the new owner was a _____ cause... 1. She was preoccupied with her phone the whole time (maybe 10 min i was there - btw didnt even greet me, didnt really answer any questions... imagine a valley girl...). 2. Didnt even tell me how much everything was individually - just told me the total like i was a kid. Just blew me off. 3. When i asked for some service items cause of the amount i bought ($34) she kinda laughed me off saying i have to buy $50's worth to get even a small thing.... (to those that dont know, $50 = about 8-10 of those rice cake packages). Taste: 1.5/5 Nothing like before. I really regret buying it here now. Comparing it with a lot of others, i can say (safely) that the ones at the grocery stores are slightly better than here. All in all, it went from 5 stars to nothing. I'm from the San Diego area and unfortunately there are no rice cake places to order rice cakes for special occasions, or just to buy other than the ones in the grocery stores. With the help of Yelp reviewers, I tried out this place and have been happy. I like all the ones I've bought and yes it's true the lady there is very friendly where she gives you more than what you pay for. I recently ordered a rice cake for my baby's special day and the order exceeded my expectations. The "cake" is massive. I have a freezer full of all sorts of rice cakes which makes me very happy. I can leisurely take a small bag out when I'm craving some and pop it in the microwave to heat it up a bit. ***BEWARE***This place is the worst. I don't usually write reviews but I'm so upset how they treated my 75 yr old mother. The old owner( grandma) was so friendly, but these new owners( husband and wife) worst customer service, rude and arrogant. Called first to get some info about hours and prices. The owner hung up before I can finish asking my question. So my mom stopped by, although all her friends told her not to go there cuz of bad service. When she got there to order a box of injulmi, 1) they kept changing the prices on her. 2) they had a real attitude, acted as though it was so much work and did not want t to do it. She asked why the prices kept changing, the owner (rude and nasty husband) yelled at my 75 yr old mother and told her they were not going to do it and to get out. I will never shop here again. Ordered duk here for my daughter's first birthday. 55 of the packages and 12 of the rainbow duk with the pink heart. I got a phone call from the owner about 30 mins after my parents picked it up asking if the count was right. They came and when I checked there was only 42 and 4 of the heart ones. When I asked about it she said they didn't make enough of the rainbow with heart so there was only 4 and they miss counted the packages. I came to understand why this place is receiving such GREAT word-of-mouth reviews. I recently had to place an order for a baby's 1st birthday rice cake..cake. The day of party arrived and I was on a hectic schedule, running on short breath and was on rush to pick up rice cake. I ran up the door and gave her the name and tried handing over my debit card. The grandma smiled at me and said "we don't take credit cards, this place is too small and I felt no need for the machine- sorry". I did not have any cash on me so I couldn't hide my "shocked and annoyed" face.- but I was clearly worried for no reason. She just told me to come back whenever I'm free to pay. Tmrw or day after tmrw or next week. I stood there even MORE shocked. "Uhmm Are you sure?" She even offered me a pack of rice cake for free which I turned down cause I felt really guilty for my earlier reaction (I can't hide my facial expressions.) Through out the entire weekend I couldn't help but to share this story to several friends of mine. The place is budget friendly and tummy friendly. I've catered from here a few times and to be completely honest Watermill is pretty much the best place to cater Korean food in OC. The food is decent and the price is decent. My recent order was "kim bap" rice and veggie rolls for a church lunch and everyone love it. We ordered 30 rolls of kimbap and it was $50.
