It's not that often that you can find bakeries offering Japanese-style cheesecakes and castella cakes. Cheesetella is a spot that offers both of these unique and fluffy desserts. I recently got to try two of their popular desserts: the Original Cheesetella and the Chocotella. I personally liked the Original Cheesetella best. It was light, fluffy, and airy with a soft melt in your mouth texture. I loved the delicate, spongy texture. The Chocotella had a nice chocolate flavor, but the texture was a bit drier and overall not as good as the Original Cheesetella. I've seen this shop a few times I've been to this plaza and today I've decided to try it. I was expecting something more like Uncle Testsu and was surprised to see that they only have 3 stars. I decided to bite the bullet and try it out. After reading few reviews, I opted for the creamtella and thank god I did. The Castella itself is soft and fluffy since it is a sponge cake but I can imagine by itself would be not enough flavor and maybe a bit dry. The creamtella alleviates this by shoving a cream between a horizontally cut castella. The cream makes it better but overall, the meal is too heavy for me with not enough flavor. If the cream was milkier, it would've been a different story. Also the sizing is huge! It's practically a cake made for 4-6 people which makes sense since it costs $13. I would've preferred a smaller portion size for cheaper but there were no other option. Needless to say, I would save my calories for something else next time. read more

I've eyed this spot for awhile now and finally made it to The Source to try it out. It's a small corner window where you order and pick up right away. I was intrigued by the Castella Cakes, so got one original ($11). The cake itself isn't really big, approximately 8x5inches. It's good for about 2-3 people as a snack. Once I bit into it, I realized how plain the cake was. It's basically a sponge cake --that's it. It was so dry and plain that we immediately went back to get a cup of cream on the side for $2. The cream really helped and it even had a milk flavor to it. Overall, it's pricey for a simple sponge cake. The more popular item is their cheesecake, so that's probably the better choice here. Tried their most famous Cheesetella, for me, it's basically a lightly sweetened sponge cake. Over the years I had bought Uber cheesetella for a friend's birthday, it's definitely more photogenic but taste wise, I wasn't impressed. I've been a loyal customer at Cheesetella for years, living in OC and visiting frequently. Sadly, my recent experiences have been nothing short of disappointing, and it's clear the quality has plummeted. The last time I visited, they handed me a corner piece from the baking tray that was noticeably 10-15% smaller than usual. I decided to give them another chance, but this time I got the cheese version of their cake. Big mistake. The cake was served cold and dry, and the cheese wasn't even melted, as you can see from the photo. Not worth it for $12! It looked unappetizing and tasted just as bad. Honestly, you can get a regular cake from the grocery store and eat it with three slices of cheese--it will taste the same. The location is a small booth with several signs, and there are premade, preboxed cheesecakes at the location. You can walk up to the counter and make your order, but I had to squat down to somewhat see the person behind the register. They increased the price to $11 (used to be $9,then $10), shrunk in size ( cake used to fit the entire box but now there's a whole empty part of the box in the height AND width of the box. I'm a bit late to doing this review but here goes; better late than never! My girlfriend and I picked up two Japanese Cheesecakes from here for Mother's Day this past Sunday. It was a bit hard to find at The Source at first; but after 5 minutes of walking around we found it just fine. There is no inside so you just take your baked goods to go or eat them around the area at a table. One thing that did bother me was they have multiple menus. One on Yelp, one big menu on the side of the building, and a smaller menu next to the window where you order. I was bothered by this because on Yelp it said they serve Ube & Regular Japanese cheesecakes. But when we got there both menus on the location said nothing about Ube. Second, on the menu of the side of the building it shows different cheesecakes, drinks, sauces, and other items. I had asked the cashier about the sides of sauce, because a side of strawberry sauce sounds good right? She had no idea what we were talking about and said we don't have that on our menu. So we said really? Why do you offer it on this menu? And she told us that, that menu isn't accurate and that they don't have those items. If there's incorrect information on your menu I feel like it's your responsibility until the menu gets fixed to make a new sign or even tell the customers what you're offering or not offering at that time.
