First they refused to return an item partner bought the day before. Had to hunt up the receipt. Alright, I can understand. Then came the Great Hex Nut Saga. I have a dresser. An antique one. The hardware needs these little hex nuts and the originals are like cast brass and are missing or shot. So off to the store partner goes with the ONE nut that worked. Came back with wrong size nuts, except for ONE that was correct size. (Stop laughing! It wasn't funny!) Mildly irritated. Partner went back, they were closed. Went back following day. I sent original nut and the ONE right sized new nut with partner. Somehow came back with THE SAME WRONG SIZE NUTS. I SAID DON'T LAUGH!! Apparently the staff wouldn't help partner, just pointed to the same spot and let them go. Take this how you want, but I mean, is it really that hard to help someone find the right size hex nuts? And they were like $4 something. I don't know if that's the going rate for very small hex nuts in general. Plus they don't give you popcorn like another hardware store I could name.

I went to Fairfax Lumber because I wanted to support a local business instead of going to Home…read moreDepot. After this experience, I won't be back. I had five keys made, and none of them worked. When I returned, Bob, the manager who made the keys, told me he could tell the original key was "a copy of a copy" and that he had doubts when he made them the first time. I did wonder at that point why the keys had been made in the first place if he had concerns they wouldn't work, or why I wasn't warned beforehand. However, he was friendly, seemed genuinely willing to help, and offered to try to fix them, so I gave him the benefit of the doubt. Unfortunately, the adjusted keys didn't work either. I went back a third time to return them for a refund. I had paid with a $50 Visa gift card, and Bob attempted to process the refund back to the card. He told me it went through. Later, when I tried to use the card for gas, it was declined because the funds had not been returned. Neither Bob nor I realized at the time that Visa gift cards cannot accept refunds. When I called about the missing refund, I spoke with Lexi. She was abrupt and rude throughout the conversation. She insisted the only option was a Fairfax Lumber store credit. I repeatedly explained that I had lived in Fairfax for six years and that this was my first time shopping there. I had specifically chosen Fairfax Lumber because I wanted to support a local business, but a store credit wasn't useful to me because I needed the money for actual expenses, not credit at a store I never use. I am on SSDI and live on a fixed income, so the difference between getting my money back and being stuck with store credit at a business I don't patronize actually matters. After going back and forth, during which she became increasingly condescending and told me things like, "Everyone knows you can't refund to a gift card," while listing other stores that supposedly follow the same policy, she finally agreed to refund me in cash. She added that they would "never do that for me again." The next day, I went to the store. Before I could speak with Lexi, Bob intercepted me and pulled me aside. He told me he had overheard how Lexi was speaking to me on the phone and didn't want me to have to deal with that. He asked me to come back when he wasn't busy and assured me he would personally take care of the situation. Unfortunately, I became very sick and couldn't return for about two weeks. I left a message during that time but never received a call back. Eventually, I called again, found out when Bob would be working, and returned to the store. On what was now my fifth trip regarding this issue, Bob said he couldn't remember all the details, which was understandable. However, instead of honoring what he had previously told me, he brought Lexi over. She immediately stated that Fairfax Lumber does not give cash refunds when a Visa gift card is used and that the only option was store credit. When I reminded her that she had already agreed to refund the money in cash, her response was, "I would never say that." At that point, Bob sided with her, saying, "Lexi knows more than I do. She's been here a long time." He then began getting an attitude and told me that this was simply how things were going to be handled. I responded that I knew exactly what I had been told and that if they weren't going to honor it, they should just give me the store credit and let me leave. The irony came at the very end. Lexi handed me a Fairfax Lumber gift card and then slid over an envelope containing extra change because, according to her, that portion couldn't be put on the card. Apparently, cash refunds are possible when it works for them. The way this entire situation was handled was unprofessional, rude, and, after five separate trips, a complete waste of my time. The issue was never just the amount of money. The issue was being sold keys that didn't work, being told one thing and then something completely different later, having an employee acknowledge that I had been treated poorly, promise to make it right, and then completely reverse course. When you're living on a fixed income, being forced into store credit you can't use isn't a minor inconvenience--it's real money. If anyone wants a Fairfax Lumber gift card with about $49 on it, let me know. I won't be setting foot in that store again.

I'm all for shopping at smaller independent hardware stores and trying to stay away from the big…read morecorporate stores but when you need something and you take the time to go to a store and they have such a small selection that you can't find what you're looking for and you end up having to leave and go drive to the big box store to find what you need. You see why the smaller ones are slowly dying. I'm done going to the store because I could never find what I need. I just don't have it. They do have a incredible amount of staff for a store of its size, but they are not much help if the product is not in house.

They also gave away free snow cones, and per the norm, free popcorn. We were there for close to 2 hours, and still I had to pull my kids away when it was time to leave. All I can say it THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU to whomever at Goodman's does all the hard work to put this on, and whomever approves the check to pay for it. The community of parents and their kids who enjoyed it today are very, very grateful.

We like to give business to local merchants. We wanted to purchase a replacement faucet set for our…read morebathroom. We found a set we liked and asked for help. We had 2 questions , how much was it and did it come in other finishes. The "faucet guy" brought us over to the customer service counter and stated to look up the item we were interested in buying. He had just started his query when another employee walked up and "faucet guy" stopped working on our question and got into a long discussion about what he wanted. The 2nd guy left and the "faucet guy went back to his computer to answer our question. Two minutes later another employee asked him for help on her computer. "Faucet guy" stopped helping us and went over to help his coworker. After several minutes he returned to us but was again interrupted by his coworker for hep with another customer. Once again he stopped helping us and went to her assistance. Now 15 minutes had passed and we still had no answer to our questions. We finally decided to heck with it and left. "Faucet guy" was still busy helping his associate with her customer. We went home found what we wanted on line at Amazon, got it cheaper and had it show up in 24 hours. If Jackson wants to keep in business they need to teach staff to handle one customer at a time. We will never go back.

For quite a while it was the endpoint, the time-to-turnaround-and-go-back-home, at the end of a ride I once enjoyed after my "workday". back then I still had a car worthy of the serpentine switchbacks on the hwy 1 downhill to Stinson Bch. also a tankful of gasoline didn't equal dinner for 1 at poggio. i usually had nothing much to do in the afternoons about 4 pm which was when i often quit what i did to pay the rent and began my ride. but all that lost its appeal as houses began to dot the ridge lines and workaday hipsters' cars caused mini-jams on their way to those houses. Come to think of it, such changes developed a good bit more than a few years ago, for which point reyes station is blameless. today it's just a lot of trouble and way less fun driving to this place, and any number of others for that matter. Plus the food on the way out and once there isn't all that much to write home about either. on the other hand the one-time roadside French bistro Chez Madelaine WAS something to write about, and is even now if only to mention its success. (the same little building just off the road south of town is still there so note to somebody who knows how to do such things: once the current tavern operation at 11285 CA-1 doesn't work out it's perfect, do another French bistro... better yet a Greek taverna.) having belabored the point about ho-hum food in west marin, but for the exception of the offering in Olema, and as a case to illustrate the point, this review isn't about restaurants in and around Point Reyes Station at all. It's about this hardware store in the middle of town, which stands out in more ways than just a place to buy a flathead screwdriver to replace the one you bent trying to open a can of paint. this is a store that sells stuff a guy might want to buy. think about it, go almost anywhere and the assortment of items displayed in windows and on retail shelves is primarily meant to appeal to women shoppers. for guys there are relatively few types of stuff we might actually want. Ok ok ok I hear you, not deaf here. what kinda guy are you anyway, "Bob S"? you saying women likely prefer new shoes over a 60" tv? and we won't even mention hats, which for men was until recently a high point, along with ties, of male fashion. today hats are more accurately termed "caps" and by the way how many guys do you know that know what a "fedora" is, or own one? This brings us to one of the few places where men go to actually buy stuff, overwhelmingly more so than do women: the hardware store. But there's a huge difference between colorless big box warehouses like Home Depot and a truly useful, carefully curated, old fashioned retailer like the one here in Pt Reyes Stn. And in a relatively remote, or at very least out of the way location like this it's almost a responsibility that such a retailer stock its shelves with a wide variety of durable, functional things that locals need to fix whatever goes wrong. A pair of fence pliers, solid brass hooks, oil lamps, specialty handsaws, shipwright augers, internal pipe wrench and other things you probably won't need in the city... there you just call a plumber. To be sure out front there's the usual selection of cute seasonal decorations and geegaws to make a yard or household more homey, and maybe some guys are into that. But this is a review that says the back of this store has what it needs to have and the back shelves are where, frankly, more guys are likely to go to find what they want. In a town like this, being a bit inconvenient and all the more charming for it, a country hardware store filled with things you do work with is indescribably essential.

A one-of-a-kind shop with an out-of-the-ordinary staff. I spent some time in Bolinas last fall…read more hanging my paintings at the gallery there and was able to walk around town several times. On one of these outings I happened into Bolinas Hardware and was pleasantly surprised to find a lot of unique items, many imported from Europe, not China. This was really refreshing as was my interaction with the staff and proprietor. I was treated like I was a local so I made it a point to return. When I came back with a friend we decided to do some of our Christmas shopping there. All in all I have to say Bolinas Hardware gets a double thumbs up from me!
