My appointment was at 8am. I showed up at 7:30 and the door was not unlocked until shortly after 8am. Of course they were not prepaired to see patients. Medicare and my insurance plan through Memorlal Hermann Medicare Advantage does not include a refraction exam which has never been a problem for me since I have that done elsewhere that includes glasses. I've always gotten a thorough exam without the refraction. However, Opia (doctor Elvia Canseco) requires me to pay and additional $40 over the standard copay for refraction, a procedure that I neither need nor want. The clerks told me an exam is impossible without this procedure - it's not - but they repeatedly insisted and would not allow me to ask the doctor without paying for everything in advance. It's obvously an attempt to sell glasses. My advice is that if you want to bleed your customers for unwanted procedures, you should wait for someone who has fallen off a cabbage truck and you should be prepared for the consequences.

I had been experiencing drastic changes on my right eye in the past few DAYS. I work at a primary…read morecare clinic & have always seen patient being referred out to Dr. Cantu. So I thought my best choice was to go to her practice. I was able to get an app the same day. The front staff were very welcoming and the staff in the back were very professional. Once I had finished with all the exams I was waiting to be seen by Dr. Cantu...I had my door somewhat open and I heard a woman arguing on the phone with someone about a patient and when she hung up she proceeded to vent to the medical assistant. The medical assistant kept trying to let her know about her patient in one of the rooms but she kept on bringing up the person on the phone to the MA. Once she walked in the room the first thing she said was "what are we gonna do with you, hello I'm Dr. Cantu without even acknowledging me (she was the woman on the phone). Basically she did a routine vision test for new glasses, disregarding any of my right eye concerns and when I asked a question I felt as if I was being annoying... she proceeded to say that the glasses I was wearing were nearsighted and that I am now farsighted... she wanted me to check my A1c and glucose and that maybe that could be the cause of my blurry vision... she told me to come back after bloodwork and then she would determine if to give me a new eye script! I was left confused and with more questions... I had a second opinion with a new ophthalmologist and the experience was waaaaaaayyyy different. One thing that stood out to me is that Dr. Cantu said it could be my glucose but the other Dr said if it was due to your sugar levels it would effect both eyes not just one. I understand if your getting government help shes a easy go to but if your paying out of pocket I HIGHLY RECOMMEND you go somewhere else.

I was seen by a man who did not introduce his name or position ( ophthalmologist or technician?). The exam was abbreviated. Then he told me that Dr. Cantu (?) would come and do the assessment. Another man came in with no introduction of what he intended to do. He did the air blowing to measure the ocular pressure) and did the dilation test. He told me my vision did not change and let me drive home without precaution about my blurred vision. Later I received a bill for 290 dollars. After the "adjustments" and insurance payment, I had to pay 67.33 out of pocket. I expected to pay nothing for a routine eye checkup. I felt cheated because I received the care I didn't need; routine eye exam costs only $50 So the office was trying to make money out of my intent, and the service was of poor quality. I would not come back for this kind of business.

The only…read morething I don't like was it seems like in five visits they don't seem to offer anything in the price range that wouldn't mean a few hundred out of pocket after my insurance for glasses. This last visit I will shop elsewhere for glasses to hopefully get a better deal where I won't have to pay so much out of pocket. However, quality glasses, good fitting experiences for years. They are consistent.

I had a very bad experience at this location. The doctor tried two different prescriptions for me,…read moreand neither one was very good. So I did not want to purchase, I wanted to try another prescription. The manager said that if I wanted to try another prescription, I had to pay for another exam. The doctor gave me the impression that I could not get better correction; she was very pushy and tried to discourage me from trying more prescriptions. So I felt trapped and accepted the contacts (this, I should not have done. I felt very helpless. I should have walked away.) But then, when my spouse went to pick them up, they gave me the wrong prescription! At this point, I lost trust and wanted to go somewhere else. So, I asked for a refund on the lenses. The lenses were unopened and unused. They said they would give me the other set of lenses, but would not give me a refund. In the end I had to go to another doctor, (Look Eye Care) pay out of pocket for another exam, and pay out of pocket for contact lenses (which give me complete correction, which the doctor at MEC said was not possible.) This was very expensive. I went to the Rice Village location for years, and always had good experiences. I only switched to the Oak Forest because my doctor in Rice Village moved away. I sincerely regret ever visiting this location. I am out hundreds of dollars for contact lenses I cannot use.

After many years of being satisfied with this as my primary and recommended dr to others, I am…read moreappalled at how I have been treated by the staff and dr here. I have even paid to have my daughter on concierge service plan in past because I trusted Dr Vu so much. After I finally did some research I realized that I could pay optical insurance out of pocket for a minimal fee (my current work provides no medical benefits) so I happily called Look to schedule my appointment. I was told I would pay the $15 co-pay and a $39 back of eye scan (not a required thing at most drs it's optional). I specifically asked if there was a contact fitting fee as I assumed there would be and the person on the phone said no. I drove to the office which is now further from home in the middle of my work day and was told the total was over $100..close to $150 I believe. I questioned the cost and they explained to me there is an $89 contact lens fitting fee. I said well that's odd because I was informed of the total and booked and drove there based on what I was told on the phone $15 and $39. I am not one to make excuses but I had just legitimately double paid my marketplace health insurance (not cheap) the day before and my account was not in great shape because it was before my next payday so I explained this and also that I was not told the right thing. Instead of showing any level of sympathy or concern for me and my circumstances as a long standing patient (and someone who has paid them thousands of dollars over the years), the option given to me? "You need to reschedule"..I walked out frustrated and saddened by my experience but I sat in my car for a moment and decided no, this was not my fault and they should be more accommodating so I went back in after already feeling embarrassed by how I was dealt with. So I opted to use my contact lense allowance to cover the add'l fee meaning I gave up an extra $30-50 for contacts. Fine..I could be seen. This experience didn't feel completely normal probably because of a combination of my embarrassment (bc I am a responsible adult) and the shortness of Dr Vu which was maybe frustration. But I got seen and was put in a higher level prescription bc my eyes are sadly getting worse. So now I start wearing the trial pair and after a couple of weeks, it's just awful despite buying readers that I was instructed to buy. I call back and ask about my options because this one clearly is not working. Well I can be seen again but the fitting fee for multi focals is more so now I need to pay an additional $46 for a new fitting (and I guess pray it works bc every time I go in there seems to be some new fee) and also order the more expensive lenses out of pocket because reminder I used my allowance for the fitting fee the first time. I don't know what has happened..maybe the break in or whatever but if you want to pay high fees because you are wealthier than I, have at it! I'm certain that someone else will treat me with more respect and care because I feel very disheartened by this experience and now I have been treated/made to feel after so many years and faith in the practice.
