I walk in, no one looks up. Ever. I feel like Casper the Unfriendly Ghost all of a sudden. The other ghosts, Stinky, Fatso and Stretch, star as the useless sales representatives. We're all dead. That's how unwelcoming it feels. I like trance, house and assorted Indian electronica. Every time I ask Fatso for a specific artist, she tells me to go to the almighty "Dance" section. Which, of course, has absolutely nothing. Even Tiesto is a hard find. And that should come as a gasp of horror to all those raving junkies out there. Candy pacifer slips out of mouth and falls slow-mo to the ground. Thud. Cut to next scene. Good luck finding a CD priced under $17. United States Dollars. Not Zimbabwean Dollars, if your hopes were high for a second. And while you do search in vain, you'll notice that Stinky's everywhere. The other is the vinyl side (which I prefer) with the über snob that doesn't even look at you or say hello. Yeah, I know. We're not worthy and shit. My hair smelled too good that day. (Sorry, I started taking showers again about 8 years ago.) They have a large selection but I wouldn't say it's "HUGE". This was my first and last visit to this shop. Firstly, I went into their shop in the middle of the day on a Wednesday. I was the only customer in the shop along with 3 employees. Not once, did anyone ask if they could assist me. They were very engaged in personal conversation. Second, the place smelled of mildew. I don't want moldy, mildew stinking records infesting my collection. Next, the condition of the records was poor for the most part. If your going to charge online prices for used vinyl, you should at least make sure the condition is playable and the sleeves aren't split. After a while of wandering around the piles, I interrupted the employees long enough to ask where their rarer and higher end records were, they literally pulled a cardboard box out from behind the counter that said collectible on the outside. It had about 20 common titles in it that happened to be from big name artists. Nothing I wanted for my collection. So I left. If your serious about records, or even a casual listener, skip this shop. There are plenty of clean and organized shops in the Denver area. Most of whom have better selection, similar prices and who's employees will stop chit chatting long enough to ask if they can be of help. Overrated. Dirty. Disorganized. Yeah, wow, they have independent music. Too bad you feel gritty when you leave. When you're done looking bored and ironic maybe you could think about putting the CDs in a discernible order. I hate this store. I've shopped here twice to be sure, but I've never bought anything because I find that being semi-superior in a cow town like Denver doesn't have the weight of a NY or Chicago. 1st off I love me some Vinyl so it's a little hard for me to rate any place with a large selection of used vinyl poorly. Wax Trax in particular is one of my favorites, partially due to being a block from my house and secondly the typically great selections of my favorite classic rock hits. I've bought hundreds of records here and will continue to. Every time I come in I typically can find another nugget I didn't even think about. The staff is hit or miss... if you get a friendly person they'll be a great little conversation, or you could get a somewhat groggy hipster in which you may have to do a sort of soup nazi'esqe shuffle and pay and get out of there. Whatever, I like it! If you love records, you love this place, parking might be a little tough depending on the day or time you come, but definitely make it happen. After going a couple years without setting foot into Wax Trax, I owe them an update. Hell, after skimming my first review, I probably owe them an apology. Wax Trax has saved my ass a few times in recent months, and to that, I'm indebted. It's amazing what a little customer service can do...since I started shipping my business over to Twist and Shout a few years ago, I realized that the 'surly, know-it-all' record store clerk was a dying breed. Fortunately, so has the management at Wax Trax. The former suicidal notes on staff have now been replaced by good vibrations, and this is the biggest boost for the store in recent years. A couple months ago, I stopped into Wax Trax browsing for stickers and used CDs (as is my wont). Although I was the only customer in the store, the dude behind the counter was the perfect balance of helpful and aloof--cool to give me space, and helped me when I needed it. When I came across a 'must-have' Fugazi bumper sticker in their binder, he even laughed and informed me it was the last one. THIS. This was the kind of personal touch that I always felt kept Wax Trax from being the kind of store I could spend an hour browsing in, rather than going in and out with an agenda. Keep it up, guys. In addition to a new and improved face of customer service, I've also been impressed with their ability to carry underground or rare releases. Unlike some of the Wax Trax faithful, I'm not the type of guy who'll spend hours combing over the used section trying to fill in gaps for my collection. However, when I'm able to find three somewhat-obscure metal releases* that have yet to show their heads over at the other record stores in town, I know I'm striking gold. They may not have the most extensive stock in town, but I'm at a point where niche shopping is becoming mandatory, not optional. And Wax Trax gets high points for catering to that crowd, in all genres. Sure, the prices still hover around $14-15 a pop. And granted, the store will never have the freshly-waxed glean of some other music merchants in town. But after giving the store another shot, I'm glad to say that Wax Trax has re-entered my personal Top 5 list for places to kill time in Denver. As long as they're keeping savvy clerks and deep cuts on hand, I'll keep coming back. *Graveyard, Agalloch, Buzzov*en if you're into that stuff. read more

Their buyers are out scouring for new records all the time, and they turn up some amazing stuff. You have to go regularly though, because the good stuff sells FAST. I've been on this kick lately...replace the old music I once loved because I sold the CD's when I needed money and hey, I'd ripped the files as 128KB mp3's. Who needs the CD's now? Well, countless computers later and listening to the difference on real speakers of 128KB mp3's and wav's and I'm yearning for the CD's I sold back in the day. And guess what? They're more expensive now than they were fifteen or twenty years ago! This sucks. Anyway, WaxTrax is a cool, little neighborhood joint. I didn't visit the vinyl place as I'm also scouring the Internet for someone that doesn't know what Technics 1200's are and is willing to sell them for like $50. Service was pretty non-existent, but I didn't need it anyway. I knew what I was looking for. Their selection of new CDs quite honestly sucked compared to the other joints I've been to. (Twist & Shout, 2nd Spin, and Independent - which is now I believe closed) Prices were, well expensive compared to back in the day. I'm not sure how that happens. And their used CD selection was very sparse. Overall, I got a few things, but you can do better, at least on the CD side of things. read more

A certain favorite girl-boyfriend gave me a much needed record player for Christmas, so where am I to go after dropping her off at the airport to qwell my sadness? To buy records. Duh. I gave myself $20 and thought I could maybe get 3 records. I came home with 7 including Berlin, Patsy Cline, Ray Charles and Cat Stephens. None that I saw in the used section were over $6, and they were all organized superbly. I recommend going to Wax Trax to boost up your classic vinyl, and if you go on a Monday, I bet I'll see ya there. PS I also like that the guys at the front don't bother you while you are looking, but they also don't judge you when one of your purchases happens to be an entire album of bagpipes. I am an out of towner, and an avid record collector. Are you visiting Denver? Go to (the vinyl arm of) Wax Trax! These establishments are few and far between these days, so I was ecstatic to see such a place still thriving in Denver. Wall to wall vinyl, and LARGE shelves full of 45s. They have new and used, reissue and OG pressings. Butcher covers up behind the counter, and dust everywhere. I am in love. Since I was traveling, I stuck to the 45s. They have two separate walls of 45s, plus a small shelf of the "new" arrivals. One wall is full of well organized, mid-range priced, repress and high end 45s. The opposite side is (almost) as well organized, but has the more loved, cheap singles. An hour disappeared while going through this wall. I left with about 35 singles... total cost? $17 I dug through the LPs just to get a taste. Are you into modern soul, boogie, jazz or hip hop 12s? Wax Trax is for you. Otherwise, you need to get lucky for a good LP find. As an out of towner, I have no idea what the store is like on a daily basis, but my visit was wonderful. Highly recommended! read more

Stopped in the vinyl room the other day after Twist & Shout's prices (for used vinyl) pissed me off. I was so happy I did. I've been here once before with barely anytime to browse as they were closing, so I decided to go back this afternoon. I'm on a quest sort of to find some really great jazz records and the key word being "records". Records, LPs, vinyl, wax, whatever you wanna call it, this place has it. This is where the hardcore music fan comes to reminisce in the search, the smell, and grit of classic, historic records from years gone by. Wax Trax Records may now unofficially be Wax Trax CD's, but it's still the same place. Once again a staple of my high school days, back then this was the only place to find certain albums that would never be seen in the larger record stores. While you can now find the most obscure bands online or download and for much cheaper, I still like to buy the occasional "hard copy" from a place like this. I couldn't help but chuckle as I leafed through the racks and saw bands that I never even thought about on cd, and may have bought a couple, both for the sake of nostalgia and love of the music. It's small and somewhat cramped, but maybe that's because it just isn't the kind of place that attracts the big crowds. You know the store that makes for the main setting in High Fidelity? I truly believe it was based on Wax Trax. It's even complete with some aloof staff who are just cool enough to not have to interact too much with the customers, although they are helpful when asked. I truly love this store, and have forgotten how much I missed going in and shopping for music. read more

Wow, this place is fantastic! Here are a few little things to know that already make it pretty great: 1. They actually play vinyl over the store speakers-you could hear them changing it, and those lovely little pops as the record started. While I was there, they were spinning great 60s rock. 2. The organizing cards are ALL handwritten-and there are probably several hundred of them! 3. They have a "holiday" section, which includes records with Halloween sounds to put on at a party. Come on...how cool is that? So after receiving a shiny new turntable and speakers from my folks for my birthday and sorting through the collection of records they gave me, I discovered there were a few I thought I still needed. Enter Wax Trax... This place is a music fan's nirvana. SO many records packed into the store, both new and used (remastered re-issued vinyl is a big thing right now). After realizing I was only looking in the "new" section, I went to check out the used section, and that's where I struck gold. I looked and looked and looked for maybe 45 minutes, and finally landed on 2 Beatles albums, a Led Zeppelin album, a Ventures album, and a little 45 of "The Lion Sleeps Tonight". By the way, this all cost me about $22. TOTAL steal! I didn't spend as much time browsing the 45s, as they're REALLY packed in there and aren't as well organized as the 33s, but they're still so great. There's something about that musty/dusty smell of an old record sleeve. As I continue to build my collection, Wax Trax will be my one-stop shop. If you love buying music the "old fashioned way", and especially if you love to find older, classic stuff, look no further. Wax Trax is amazing! read more

When I think of a record store, Wax Trax is what I think of. It's dark and dirty and the only staff member is propped behind the counter trying to figure out what kind of ridiculous music he wants to play in the store next. I have found a LOT of vinyl here that I haven't found other places. They have a whole section of punk, indie, and metal type releases that really caters to my musical tastes. Their prices are about what I've come to expect, for new releases. Their used records are priced very reasonably, though I have bought a couple of used records that should probably not have been sold at any price (a Dark Side of the Moon that was warped into an oval and a Lynyrd Skynyrd whose grooves were all but nonexistant). Overall though, this is the kind of place that you can spend an hour or two browsing and have fun without being pestered by employees. I'll admit it's not for everyone. Popular music fans would probably be better off, and more comfortable, at Twist and Shout. But if you're into any form or era of rock music, there's not a better record store in Denver. read more

I think though Wax Trax is losing steam a bit though, they had to close a few of their stores on the block over the last decade and their Boulder,CO location is 100% defunct. Very sad. How do you exchange pleasantries with an old lover who is now a bit long in the tooth? What do you say, how do you react? Wax Trax vinyl has been my go-to brick and mortar vinyl music store for two decades, it's hard to imagine what I'd do without her. It should be noted the current state of affairs. Anything terribly rare or hard to find most likely won't be located here. They will carry a lot of old standards, quite a few 180-gram reissues, and of course new vinyl releases by the ton (isn't it awesome that they even exist??). The staff are crazy knowledgeable about every conceivable music release on vinyl, and can help to locate or order whatever they don't carry. There are those that believe that vinyl is a thing of the past, that the "good enough" garbage of lossy compression and highly-portable file sizes are king now. There are also those that worship at the altar of audio fidelity, and who refuse to sacrifice audio quality for mere reproducibility. Either way we *have* to have stores like this, and regardless of the cost we cannot let a superior audio technology fade away. read more

This is a great hole-in-the-wall music store located in Cap Hill. Sadly, I haven't been here in quite some time. However, back in my college days, this was my go-to spot for any obscure B-Sides and rarity albums I was looking for at the time. . I loved shopping here because they always had albums that you could not find anywhere else. So needless to say, I always left pleased! The place is crammed from floor to ceiling with music, which definitely gives the place some character! If you're a music fan, I would highly recommend checking this place out! One of the few records shops I've been to with a good classical selection (organized too!!). Shop is organized with Used items in one half of store, other half is new items. I find it redundant to search for same artist in new and used, but thats not a negative, just preference. Selection is pretty good, although note that some items I checked out had optimistic pricing based on condition -- I usually don't pay more than $6 for a record with scratches that pop on playback unless its a rare album. To see one go for $8 that is somewhat common is a stretch for me. However, overall great selection, friendly staff. Location is a bit challenging in terms of parking. read more
