I didn't rate them low because Detroit was recovering from a storm. Most of the vendors did not have a way of processing electronically. But I saw fresh fruits and vegetables. There were two good trucks which was convenient because I was on lunch. There also were health care insurance stands and social needs information. I will definitely go back. read more

When I get a chance to come here on Wednesday during lunch, I love to grab a home-made salad at brothers. Ask for the spicy lettuce and home-made dressing. This is a small market (like 12 stalls max), but it's just soo wonderful and there are several food stalls that will satisfy your buds! read more

Great food, great prices, friendly point of gathering on campus. It's great to find some fresh produce (and some hot lunches and sweet desserts) on campus, directly across from the Detroit Public Library on Cass Ave. During berry season, you'll find cherries, raspberries, strawberries, and blueberries at prices comparable to the summer sales in grocery stores... HOWEVER, you'll find at the market here INCOMPARABLE flavor in these berries. Unlike, say, Driscoli's which are commonly found in the stores, and whose strawberries are always lacking in flavor, whose flesh is always airy, hollow, and whose unnatural shapes are almost plum-sized, the strawberries at the market here are small but dense, a deep red, gushing with juice and berry-sugar, just a completely different experience and much superior to the grocery stores. Russel St. Deli frequently has a stand, selling soups and sandwiches or wraps. Every OTHER Wednesday, there's a vendor who specializes in SWEET POTATO products, mostly desserts, and I religiously seek this table out for their 4inch pecan-topped sweet potato pies! glorious! In the Fall they'll still be out with root vegetables and apples (which means cider and donuts!), but now, in the thick of the summer heat, is when you can grab the whole cornucopia of fresh foods. Makes a terrific counterpoint to the weekend festivities at Eastern Market. read more

The Wayne State farmers market is back! The market is open every Wednesday from 11AM-4PM through October 27th, right in front of WSU's business school on Cass (across from the Detroit Public Library). Free 15 minute parking is available at the market and they accept cash, WSU's OneCard, Michigan Bridge Card and the state's Project Fresh and Senior Project Fresh coupons. I've been shopping at this market for the past two years. It's so convenient, cheap and delicious. There are maybe 8? vendors tops, but there is still plenty to choose from. Fruits, veggies, honey, bread, flowers,it's all there. BONUS: This year they have quite a few DETROIT growers-Grown in Detroit, Earthworks Urban Farm, D-Town farm and Brother Nature Produce. Support them! Also there: Avalon International Breads and Russell Street Deli. Seriously, it's a tiny market but it's definitely worth the visit if you live/work/go to school in the area. They're also running a second market the third Thursday of each month from 11AM-4PM in front of Scott Hall, located at 540 E. Canfield, next to Detroit Receiving Hospital. I haven't been to this market yet, but I'm sure it's just as good! read more

Small but cute - good prices on fresh produce and flowers. This is the second week its been open this year (Wednesdays from 11-4 through October). My co-workers have brought back lovely flowers to brighten our office space, delcious treats like sweet potato cheesecake and produce like what you'll find at Eastern Market. Today I grabbed a bowl of black-eyed pea soup with collard greens and sausage from the Russell St. Deli booth. I absolutely love this little farmer's market and only wish it were open more than one day week! 15 minutes of free parking to market shoppers along Cass. Cash, EBT/Bridge Card and Project FRESH coupons are accepted. (OneCards are not accepted this year). read more

One day I left class to see some booths set up outside my school. Booths where people were selling produce. I thought I was high on formaldehyde, but it was a sort of "visiting market" day from the WSU Farmer's Market. With the few dollars I had on hand, I was able to buy produce for the week, which was great. I bought some incredible beets (ended up in salads and being roasted), peaches (which beat Nino's hands down), Spinach (which I forgot in my car, and wilted), and some green cherry tomatoes, which were some of the best I've ever had. The tomatoes lasted the whole week, and I used them every night. I really hope they return sometime soon! read more

It's great to go on your lunch hour and walk down the street to the WSU Farmer's Market. You get area produce and flowers at reasonable prices (although sometimes it would be cheaper to go to Krogers, but you are supporting local growers). The vendor's are all in the Detroit Metro area. Russell Street Deli has a stand where you can purchase one of their delectable soups. Avalon bakery also has a booth there where you can purchase their items. I used to help coordinate this when I was an intern for the WSU BusOps Dept. I loved being a part of this. I met so many wonderful people; students at WSU, Detroit residents, local vendors, and Michigan farmers. Each week we'd prepare for this and it was always so exciting to see the turn out. It grew every year...leading to us happily offering a nice variety of Detroit/Michigan grown/made flavor. If you've never gone, I highly recommend visiting! It's a wonderful treat for those on campus and worth a visit to be part of the action. From Avalon Bakery to Van Houtte Farms, you won't be disappointed with what is offered to the City of Detroit and this Farmer's Market. I especially loved this as a student. It was nice to have something different rather than the typical restaurants on campus that are always available. read more

As a "farmers market" this gets one star. Not a lot of variety except in the height of summer, very high prices. But as a community experience, a place to gather with good prepared foods, it gets four stars. read more

Delighted to learn about this farmers market on Cass. Meter parking is offered, but is hard to find an open spot. This market opens early in spring and closes late in late in fall, so you can pass by and grab lunch in between classes. They accept EBT card if you have one. They also pass out cloth bags so if you should happen to buy a huge/heavy purchase for the upcoming weekend, it's possible to carry it all to your apt/home without having to lug a lot of breakable plastic bags, which makes it handy if you didn't plan to do shopping at the last minute. They also pass out recipe cards to help you make dishes that use up all the different veggies on offer - so you can go in without a plan and leave well prepared to cook like a chef. read more

I ended up going to get some lunch on their opening day. Not a lot of variety as far as vegetables and fruits go, however, I browsed through and decided to get a sandwich (a little on the small side and pricey--it literally was a slice of bread cut in half, and in between a slice of tomato and a slice of mozzarella--for $4.25). I got a mini coconut and sweet potato pie which was good, but not the best pie I have had. I guess I get the idea of supporting local growers and the community, but then on a student stipend it isn't my most affordable lunch alternative. read more

When I'm in Detroit on a Wednesday I try to stop by here (have been here a few time in the last few months). There is a nice selection of fruits, vegetables, baked products (from Avalon Bakery) and meal type options (the Russell Street Deli options are the best). The selection is limited compared to some of the of the farmer's markets in the area so I hope that they expand this. I don't expect Eastern Market but it would be nice to have more fresh fruits and vegetables. Hopefully that brings prices down as well. You have to search around the area for parking (there is plenty of paid parking but the meters are better) and be careful as the meter attendants are notorious for ticketing here. Also the location is not really in the heart of campus but it is close to the Public Library which may make it easier to access for many. I feel like this market could better serve the local community but it is excellent to have a market like this. read more
