We found Wei Hong Bakery while I was visiting St. Louis with my uncle, and I'm so glad we stopped. It's a tiny little bakery next to a much larger, run down looking restaurant. Honestly, if you judged it by the outside, you might drive right past it. There is one parking spot in front, and then a run down parking lot behind and to the side. The moment I walked in, I felt like I was back in my childhood. The lime green decor, the dark bakery display cases filled with buns, and the small plates of food inside reminded me of the Cantonese bakeries I grew up going to. They also had ready to go meals wrapped up to take home. We bought a bunch of things to try. We had the beef cheung fun, siu mai, BBQ pork baos, sesame balls, egg custard tarts, and one of my favorites, the giant round sponge cake. Everything was fresh and really tasty. The roast pork looked delicious too, with nice crispy skin. The biggest surprise for me was seeing lo po beng (Old Wife Cake). We can hardly ever find it on the East Coast, so whenever we do, we always buy some for my mom. Seeing it here made me so happy. I live in the Metro D.C. area, where we have some really good Cantonese bakeries, so I wasn't expecting much from this tiny place. But honestly, Wei Hong Bakery could definitely give many of the bakeries back home a run for their money. Don't let the outside fool you. This warm little shop is easy to miss. Headed west on Olive it's attached on the western side of a large building that is or used to be a restaurant. Best to park on the lot behind, but handicapped people will see a single parking spot right in front of the door big enough for an SUV. Love love Love. Wei Hong is as tried and true as they come when it comes to Cantonese. It is not true Szechuan but they certainly use plenty of Szechuan to add heat to their dishes, and I love it. Every single time I roll with their General tao's Chicken. Every single time it exceeds expectations. Now, this is a takeout Cantonese spot so I have no idea how fresh it actually is. Nonetheless, I love it. I wish they still allowed dine in experiences, but I think since COVID they are take out only. Now, back to the food. The General Tao's has a solid kick and is drenched in the sweet sauce. A slight tang, plenty of sweetness, and the kick of peppers makes this dish a favorite. Their orange chicken is great as well. My partner always orders that. Super bright and citrusy with that same kick from the Szechuan. Lastly, got pot stickers for the first time and they were fire. Will absolutely roll with those again. they seem to stay pretty busy as a hefty line remains consistent when grabbing a bite, so sometimes you have to wait a bit, even if you ordered ahead. I am new to the city and I was missing asian food and this was exactly what I needed! It is a really small bakery that sells food from shumai to roasted pork and peking duck to sweet & savory breads. Pictures don't do it justice! The duck and roasted pork were so flavorful and juicy and the sauce that comes with the duck just elevates the entire experience. No seating inside so we brought it home and ate with rice and it was so nostalgic for me and just what I needed as the weather is getting colder. They chop the meat right when you order it. Staff was pleasant! I highly recommend. I didn't get a receipt but it was about $11/lb of roasted pig and somewhere around $20 for half a duck which is pretty standard from what I've seen. **Apple maps has the location wrong for some reason - just keep heading east on olive a bit more and you will see it! read more

We were in town for a soccer tournament and looking to kill time before we could check in to our hotel so decided to stop by this bakery. They only had one parking spot in front of the door so we had to go around the back of the building and found parking next to the building. It is a small bakery but had our favorites so we were happy. We only grabbed a few buns to try because we thought we would have time to come back if we liked them. We were pleasantly surprised and will definitely be back for the bbq pork buns and sweet top buns! We also saw that they sold roast duck and some dim sum trays. My mom and I stopped by Wei Hong Bakery Saturday morning because we were in the area. We haven't been in a while, but are pretty familiar with the bakery and all of the options. (I like to get some fresh rice rolls to use for beef chow fun, but they didn't have those ready when we showed up). I especially like visiting the bakery in the morning, because all of the items are fresh and warm. The items are also pretty reasonably priced-- especially the buns; although the dim sum items can be a little on the more pricey. One of my favorite items are the zongzi, which are glutinous rice filled with pork belly and mung bean wrapped in bamboo leaves. The ham and egg buns and the BBQ pork buns are solid options as well (honestly, everything is good). The restaurant has closed but I'm very happy the bakery is still open! I have found my people. We're from Kansas City and came to STL for the weekend and came to the bakery at the recommendation of some friends. Cantonese, Mandarin and Vietnamese language filled the air. 30 minutes later, we walked out with four boxes of pastries, a huge bag of dim sum, tofu dessert... and $125 less in my pocket. The place didn't disappoint as I had my Ratatouille moment outside in the parking lot as my family and I dove into the food. They were all speaking Cantonese which was very comforting. I will say that I have tried some of their other stuff like Egg Tarts and Pineapple Buns, but these are more in my recent memory. - Cream Buns - First time trying these and will say that it's not my favorite. I think the cream hardens over time and starts to taste like frosting. The bread though is amazing, so soft. - Pork Floss Buns - This is always one of my favorite things to get at an Asian Bakery and I was a little bit surprised by this one. I thought they would roll the pork floss into the bun but it was only on the outside. Nonetheless it's still pretty tasty. Overall, solid Asian bakery. Stopped by here after seeing it although the sign was covered by a tree. It's a small place but the food is legit. Not too many choices but the food they do have is good. The shumai was really flavorful and filling. The egg tarts were perfect but perhaps a little too eggy. I know they're called egg tarts but a little easier on the yolk would be good. Considering that this is a to go only establishment, you'd think they'd have packing down. I am very disappointed at the way they packed my stuff. They put two delicate sponge cakes and 3 egg custard tartlets in a paper box, and several trays of dim sum on top. The dim sum crushed the box. The sponge cakes were squished and one of the tartlets was destroyed. This place is very popular. The line was 30 minutes long. We saw two full roasted pigs picked up while we were waiting. Cash Only Chinese Cantonese Bakery and BBQ. Situated right next to Wei Hong Seafood, this place is separate and right next door. You really come here for the bakery and if you need to order a chinese cake. This is the only place I trust and know of in STL to order cake. This cake is special, and not like other bakeries. It's steamed with fresh fruit (think Angel cake but lighter) and creme vs. a typical cake. I call it a birthday cake, but really it's just cake for any occasion. The Eats: 1) Steamed and baked BBQ Buns 2) I love the coconut, red beans balls, hot dog buns 3) Steam rice leaves and rice cakes 4) Sui Mai 5) Egg Custard is the best here The trick is to only come when the bakery opens in the morning (around 11am is fine) vs. in the afternoon, and more options on the weekends than the weekdays. The people are also really nice (which is rare when I put chinese and customer service in the same breath). If you want to order a cake, they go by sizes and fillings. Everything is the same except the size and fruit options. There is NO CHOCOLATE CAKE. It is only a vanilla steamed cake with fresh fruit (strawberries, melon balls, or a mix). You pay for it according to size (8,10,12,16 inch, etc. and by how many layers of filing). The smallest will feed at least 5-8 people. This will range from $22-$80, You should give them 48-72 hours of advance notice. I've mostly only spoken to them in Cantonese when I visit, but I sent my partner in crime in with no Cantonese language abilities and he survived to pick up my cakes. This is my favorite Chinese bakery in STL. You aren't fancy or have even a place for me to sit down and enjoy- but you have the best egg custards for about $1 a piece. read more

Delicious sweet top bun. It was my first one and I got to say I'm a fan. It's a sweet bun with a sweet and a little savory crusted top. This one does not have any fillings- just delicious fluffy bread/roll. They also have whole roasted duck? Which I did not try but looks delicious. The sesame balls filled with red bean/lotus are my absolute favorite. They definitely don't skimp on the fillings. Egg tarts are light and sweet, the crust is wonderfully flaky. Everything is made fresh that day. I am so glad St. Louis has an Asian bakery like this. They also have crispy pork and roasted duck. They also have baos, ducks, dessert tofu etc. I am very surprised at the freshness of the bakery. I tasted my friend's mochi with nuts inside with shredded coconut exterior. We went ot Wei Hong Bakery a couple of weeks ago. We were really looking for some "Egg Tarts". We had been in Chicago a few months back and had them for the first time in Chinatown. This little bakery sits next to the restaurant of the same name. Definitely Chinese owned and run. We walked in to a very small and unassuming basic storefront, there was a line already with a large glass cabinet of baked goods. We were there for a while waiting on the Egg Tarts to be finished and so we saw a lot of traffic come and go. It looks like a local favorite to me. There was a guy in one station doing nothing but chopping up "to go" orders of roast duck! I mean he must have made 20 orders while we were there. It must be good. I will go back and try that next time. Egg Tarts were good, maybe not as good as Chinatown in Chicago but it may just be personal taste. Very friendly people and a thriving business. I love everything I've ever gotten at this bakery. The duck is amazing, custards, bean sesame balls, toro puffs, coconut buns, they're all fresh and tasty. I find that if you show up right when they open they only have about 20% of their shelves filled, but they make new items and fill the shelves throughout the day. This is my go-to Chinese place in STL. I evangelize it to everyone I know; I show it off to out-of-town friends who visit; I always try to get my coworkers to do lunch here. They have an incredible variety of the "Chinese takeout" that's so familiar to American diners, as well as authentic and lesser-known (in the US) Cantonese fare. All of it hits. I've never been disappointed by a single thing I've eaten here. And you can get cha siu buns, fresh rice noodles, and ha gao on your way out! (The ham and chive buns are actually so sick - a beautiful egg-wash crust, the perfect tang from the chives, and an amazingly soft and flaky dough.) My staples are the spare ribs in black bean sauce, sizzling chicken w/black pepper, BBQ fried rice, and any of the congees. They've closed their dining room since COVID lockdown, and while I miss being able to give my friends the dim sum experience, I appreciate that they're protecting themselves and encouraging others to do the same by avoiding dining rooms. I'll happily keep supporting them in that. The couple who runs it is really nice - they'll get to know your usuals if you eat there enough! - and service is always quick and easy. This place is great, just how I like my chinese bakeries - ghetto looking! The pastries were all really fresh and full of flavor. The sesame balls were crisp on the outside and sweet & chewey on the inside. The cream buns were filled with the most wonderful cream filling (take THAT out of context!) It was sweet, but not sickly sweet. The people were actually really nice too. That kinda scares me. A tip, please just go and buy two of everything. Run, don't walk to Wei Hong Bakery! The bakery offers Chinese baked buns (sadly, no steamed pork buns only baked), egg custard tarts, cookies, roast duck and pig, chow fun, and many other tasty foods. They also have cold beverages available and a bar-top along the window in case you want to eat there. The pork mixture in the chasou bao and the lap cheong in the hard-boiled egg/sausage buns are a little drier then what I grew up eating (I'm Chinese-Hawaiian and grew up eating manapua in Hawaii and California), but still very tasty and the only Chinese bakery I recommend in Saint Louis. When my family comes to town, we always make a field trip (usually two or three) to this bakery. As a quick aside, a few years ago a colleague who lived in Malaysia for many years and I each declared that we knew the best Chinese bakery in the area. He claimed the best Chinese bakery was located on South Grand and I was sure the best one was on Olive. After much debate we discovered that - you guessed it - they are run by different members of the same family. So it seems we were both correct. read more
