They say it's "better late than never", a week late but still want to share about Valentine's Day here. First, the fact that my latte kicked the meal off with a Happy Valentine's - so cute. We had a little bit of everything: frittata, loaded waffles, pancakes, chocolate croissant, and potatoes. Everything came out together, warm, and tasty. The waffles were soft and a great balance of flavor and sweet. The whipped cream, I could have eaten a tub of. We arrived at 10:00, without reservations (they only take reservations for parties of five or more), and were promptly seated. When we left there was a bit of a crowd waiting to be seated. Before leaving I popped over to the bakery (where I have been a few times) and grabbed some goodies to take home for later. Love the bakery and all the options available. Went in for a few pastries/dessert items. Staff was friendly and offered suggestions. We ordered the following individual slices: banana chocolate cake, strawberry mousseliine cake and an eclair. The banana chocolate cake wasn't what we were expecting. It had more of a coffee flavor than bananas or chocolate. I'm not a fan of coffee so this item was a disappointment to us, but the other two items were delicious especially the strawberry mousseline cake. I could eat that cake everyday! The eclair had just the right amount of custard inside. I wish I had taken photos of the desserts, but we were so excited to try them that we forgot. There was a huge selection of desserts to pick from there so next time we'll try something else. If you like macaroons, they had one of the largest amount of flavors I've ever seen. We used to go there a lot about ten years ago when we lived closer and would always get the carrot cake. It's always been good too. The place has been redone and gotten a lot bigger since we were last there. You could easily host a small get together there and the ambiance is so cute. read more

I've passed this bakery at least 200 times but never stopped in. I must say, I'm so glad I did!! They sell every type of baked good you can imagine from cupcakes, cinnamon rolls, danishes, macaroons, etc. I ordered a chocolate chip scone, mini cinnamon scone and a box a macaroons. They have a deal where you can get a surprise box of imperfect macaroons for $6 which was a great deal and they tasted awesome. The service was fast and the cafe is much bigger on the inside than it looks from the inside. The interior is adorable too and makes you feel like you stepped into a Paris cafe. Absolutely loved the fruitcake from La Bonne Bouchee! It was unlike any fruitcake I've ever had. This was not the traditional heavy holiday fruitcake people joke about around Christmas. You could actually taste the fresh fruit, and it felt light, fresh, and beautifully made. Everything tasted high quality and balanced perfectly. They share a parking lot with several other businesses, and it was easy to find parking. As you enter, you see all of the amazing displays filled with fruit tarts, muffins, danishes, croissants, soufflés and so many different flavors and colors of macarons. Some people don't realize that this is also a full service restaurant where you can sit down and have lunch as well. Service was courteous and helpful. Long overdue for an update, particularly after the great but troubled Olivier passed along his legacy to new owners. Usually, when a new owner takes over, it either slips or turns into a disaster. Not La Bonne Bouchee! It got better! (Sorry, Olivier!). IT GOT BETTER! First, I moved away from St. Louis a few years ago, but when I returned last week for meetings, I scheduled my entire meeting around a visit to this amazing restaurant. I've lived in Chicago and other cities, and no city I've visited has anything close to this wonderful French patisserie and bakery! This visit, I ordered a classic Quiche Lorraine, OJ, coffee, and a strawberry and cheese croissant. None disappointed. Anyone can make a quiche. But LBB makes this classic French breakfast to absolute perfection. Their difference isn't just the recipe, but it's clear that they use quality ingredients. It comes through in the flaky but "meaty" butter crust. Real butter! The quiche filling was delicate, light, and fluffy. Just perfect. Not too salty. Very creamy, which contrasted with the butter crust. Absolutely delicious. The croissant was buttery, flaky and warmed just right. The filling was a great combination of sweet strawberry and creamy cream cheese. The coffee isn't an afterthought. It was matched perfectly with their menu. Not too strong, not too light. Before jetting out the door for my trip back to Cleveland, I grabbed a couple more pastries and a chocolate truffle. The chocolate truffle was rich, chocolatey, and creamy. Again...everything here starts with quality ingredients and loving care in baking. The staff have been there a long time, and they really are the best anywhere. I came for a smoothie (hydration, health, balance) and immediately derailed into sweet and savory snacks. The ricotta and spinach danish thingy ma bob was fantastic, flaky and creamy. Then I grabbed all the cookies, took one bite of each like a civilized raccoon, and felt zero regret. It's about balance. Let me start this by saying that I wasn't here last weekend or anything. It's been a while. I wrote this review when I came home to save for when I was holed up in my home recuperating from having my 2nd knee replaced. I haven't been here in a VERY long time. I am thrilled to see that the only change is that it's gotten better. I brought a couple people who are always looking for a new breakfast place. They were really excited about the decor and the smell as soon as we walked in. We got our drinks, and then checked out the menu. The couple I brought with me were from Kentucky and Ohio and they know their biscuits and gravy. When we go out we usually ask for a sample of the place's gravy. This was no exception. Our waiter was happy to bring us one. It was TOTALLY met with approval so they got an order of that with some bacon, an omelet and a frittata - that I believe had 2 cups of cheese on it. Ha! Ha! We ate very good. And while all of that was good I honestly could have sat and ate the crunchy bread they brought out from the get-go. When we were ready to go I noticed the table next to us got an order of fruit. I have sometimes been disappointed by the fruit that I have received at some places but there was so much bright and beautiful fruit in the bowl next to our table that I KNOW I will get that as a side next time. The only disappointing thing that happened was that once we got our food it seemed like we had been forgotten. I even turned around a couple times and saw our young waiter laughing it up with some of the other wait staff. But all in all the meal was wonderful! We OF COURSE stopped at the bakery side for some treats. I bought a key lime tart, a rhubarb tart, a poppyseed/lemon muffin and a blueberry scone. I also bought this nut and fruit roll up. I'm giving five stars for the bakery and 3.5 for the cafe. Bakery is spectacular. They have a huge assortment of cakes. Best of all, they have great options for those not wanting a lighter rather than a heavy, sweet, decadent cake. But, they have those, too. Huge assortment of macarons and they are spectacular. They are sweet and they have a slight crispness before the chewy center. Just excellent. Cafe is also good. Service and ambience are top notch and the menu has a lot of great items. But, quality of the food doesn't seem to match everything else. For instance, the French onion soup is more of the texture and consistency of a brown gravy rather than a rich beef broth. Not much in the way of onion, and the center was slightly cool. I believe Parmesan used to top the cup rather than a Gruyère, or something similar. It was fine, but I expected more. Le vol au Vent much the same. Terrific green. Eans and puff pastry, but the supreme sauce and mushroom just wasn't inspired. It was fine. With my criticism of the food, it should be noted that prices are very reasonable. I'd be happy to eat here again, but knowing I'm going to do the real damage in the bakery. read more

Stopped by here on the way home from the airport on NYE and it was a hustling and bustling place! There is a bakery, coffee/smoothie station and cafe all in this location. It was electrifying to see cases upon cases of beautifully decorated cakes and decadent desserts. The German Chocolate Cake and Creme Brûlée were as delicious as they were beautiful. We also ordered the PBJ smoothie from the coffee shop area! It was amazing and truly tasted like drinking a PBJ. The service was prompt and efficient considering it was very busy. Friday lunch at this place with two of my friends was a great way to catch up and enjoy French Food options. It's busy with customers and the noise is minimal to low moderate where I am able to hear one another. Regarding my order, I went for my usual lunch combo of half slice quiche du jour with cup of French onion soup. Those rolls at the table complement my soup and I like to use the soup for dipping the bread instead of the butter during this visit. Portion sizes are decent and I love having left overs to enjoy the next day. Service is spot on each time I visit this place. They have a wide variety of desserts, they literally have every type of dessert (macaroons, cake, turnovers, pies, muffins, etc) for every taste bud. I was so excited to visited LaBonne Bouche but was left disappointed with the quality of macarons. I visited solely for the macarons; the service was excellent, the staff even offered a nice conversation asking how my day was and the cafe environment itself was premiere. I ordered three macaroons along with 2 danishes to go. The danishes were delightful, the lemon was my favorite and I will definitely return for that again. The macarons were hard & crumbled in my hand, all three of the different flavors were like this. I am a huge macaron fan and regularly try new places solely for their macarons. I was very surprised that a bakery so well regarded, and with a Parisian theme, produced such low quality macarons. Total brunch bill for (3) exceeded $150 which is fine, but the service quality was imbalanced, ---checking in way too much, overly casual and impersonal--which detracted from the value of the experience. . We felt rushed (reservations made 12 days ahead). It's the perfect retail bakery, the cafe food is great, but this is not a special occasion atmosphere--very hurried with stressed servers. Have always enjoyed the ambience in the past. First time to order an omelet and was thoroughly disappointed. Omelet was not a proper French omelet, and the waitress was not graced with command of English nor customer service manners. When asked to clarify what she was saying, she just spoke louder instead of better. She seemed offended that I was unsatisfied with the omelet, and claimed she didn't know anything about how it was supposed to be. It was folded like a taco and browned, even tough on the underside. Sent it back. Next one was not as browned or tough, but not a French omelet, which is a tri-fold with no browning and creamy inside. Regarding the second one served, the manager said "That's the way we do it". Will not be back. I've had better ones at truck stops. A more appropriate name should be Bonnie's Diner. read more

My waiter was friendly and efficient. All the staff i interacted with were very kind and helpful. There is always new things to try every time i visit and i've never had something that wasn't delicious. I would recommend getting the chicken sandwich on a more sturdy bread though for the structural integrity of the sandwich, unless you're ready to use a knife and fork. When I called to order a Strawberry Mousseline cake for my 78th birthday celebration the staff person was so helpful. I scheduled to pick it up on the Saturday after my birthday. When we arrived my daughter paid for it, that was my present from her. The cake was so beautiful and we even ended up getting other pastries as well. I have eaten here before and have purchased a large number of cakes for multiple celebrations from the bakery. Yesterday I ate lunch here with a friend. The bill totaled $53. Two hours after eating I had severe stomach cramps and was violently ill for several hours resulting in me having to call off work. My friend did not experience any symptoms. I called the manager today to let him know. I did not receive an apology for my experience. This was the only meal I consumed that day. I was told Id be contacted if there were any other complaints. I always went to this bakery since I was a kid, and I am finally delighted to write a review!!! It was the cake I mostly had when I ordered, but I tried the macarons once!! I don't have too much to say about the inside, but I guess it was a bit hollow yet cozy? I suppose it is the knowledge that it is a bakery. The cake was scrumptious and the macarons were even better!! I do plenty enjoyed how you could customize the cake, and the chocolate toppings and sign is a fun and delicious thing to eat! The cake was really moist and I thought the mocha flavor was nice on the cake. My only complaint is that I thought the buttercream and cake ratio was overly too much for me.
