In actuality it took me 10 minutes to walk to my gate! There are plenty restaurants and souvenir shops. Mostly the same as in the U.S. but plenty nevertheless. Comfortable seating at the gates with outlets. Heathrow is at the top of my list for international airports.

I've never written an review for this airport, but I've come through it about 10 times in the last 2 decades (which isn't a lot, I know, but I've seen quite a few other airports and this one does stand out in a positive way.) First, navigating this airport is very easy. There is clear signage everywhere and there is quite a lot of staff available if you have any questions. There are also a lot of moving sidewalks and ways to get around if you can't walk that far that fast. Second, there are a lot of shopping and dining options and places to sit. They do this thing where you don't know your gate until about an hour before your flight, so you kind of have to sit in the bigger communal spaces. There are plenty of sign boards with flight numbers that are easy to read and let you know once your gate is assigned. This is such a nice and easy system. Third, the way the UK (and other parts of Europe) does immigration arrivals is amazing. I wish the US was more like this. I love just scanning my passport and walking out. I don't think I've ever been in this airport longer than I should have trying to get through customs. I have global entry (for arriving back home) and even that is not faster than this system. I also have never had a problem with the security screening coming into the airport here. Even when the lines are long, they move fast, with modern equipment. If there were a flaw, it would be that I hate duty free shopping. I hate being pushed through these shops and can't wait to get past them. Scent induced migraines are never fun before a flight.

I feel the same way about Terminal 5A as I do about Terminal 3. Going through security here can be…read morea hit or miss experience, but I totally appreciate the thoroughness and care taken to keep us all safe. The long walk to the bus transfer between terminals is really what brings the rating down. It's always very crowded due to the fact that it's the primary terminal for British Airways. I corrected a mistake in my previous review of Terminal 3. The Fortnum & Mason shop is actually in Terminal 5. It's so easy to confuse the two after a long flight. Anyway, this particular location even has a bar in front of it where you can sip on champagne and nibble on canapés (if that's your thing). I just love to browse through the tea & biscuit section of the shop to see what's new. Sure, there are other great shops as well as food options on this side of the airport. I just love F&M tea! The British Airways Gallerie Club and First Lounges are above it. There's also an exclusive lounge called The Concorde Room that I'd love to try one day. So, I've read that British Airways will be starting a new direct route from Tampa to Heathrow (replacing Gatwick) towards the end of this year. I hope that this means it will arrive at BA's Terminal 5 hub. If so, then I'll be super grateful for the convenience of a smooth connection. If not, then I'll just be happy to have more connection possibilities to other countries. Either way, I'm thinking this is great for OneWorld travelers booking through American Airlines out of TPA. I'll update this review the next time we fly into this airport. Here's hoping for good vibes and good connections when passing through London.

My flight was leaving from one of the satellite Gates in terminal five, and the Heathrow staff very kindly suggested I head that way with plenty of time. The terminal is clean with lots of seating at the gate. The announcements were clear and easy to understand, and the boarding process was a breeze. As someone who lived in the UK for a couple of years, I always love transiting through Heathrow so I can stop at boots to pick up a couple of my favorite drugstore items. There's tons of shopping in terminal five as well as several dining options.

This was my first time taking a Virgin flight, so coming to the side with Delta/Virgin was a new experience. It felt kind of private, which was nice. It means less people wandering around trying to figure out where they are going. The signs outside are clearly posted as to where to head for your airline. I wasn't a huge fan of the Delta/Virgin kiosks but there were quite a few employees to help navigate and send you to open kiosks. The security screening area was super efficient and we made it through in less than 10 min. They had new equipment and I was shocked that it took us such a short time to enter the terminal. We went directly to a lounge, of which there are plenty of in this terminal, after being shuffled through the duty free shops and eateries. I wish we didn't have to walk through the duty free shops (I get scent induced migraines) but it's quick. There are quite a few eateries to choose from if you don't go to a lounge. The signage is excellent in this terminal (as it is throughout the airport in general) and we made it to our gate very easily. This is a huge terminal though so do mind the times on the signage. There are moving sidewalks/conveyors that help shorten the trip but it's still a long walk. There are shuttles available if you need them.

Other than that, this is the terminal where we can finally decompress after a long flight. As long as you have enough time built into the layover. The security checkpoint is fine. We've had some polite assistants, and also some who are very indifferent. It's the luck of the draw. This last experience was very pleasant. I did have some liquids flagged in my carry-on, but all proceeded as usual once they tested them. You can always count on security being very thorough in the UK, and with good reason. This terminal has a lot of great shopping. There are quite a few food options and airline lounges as well. It can be very crowded, but everything is easy to find. It's a nice little break before hopping on to the next flight.
