Nina is responsible for bringing farmers' markets to London, England and at one time was in charge of the Union Square Greenmarket. Her book is a great read and will teach you the importance of eating natural, local and sustainable foods. She is a big supporter of meats and cheeses as well as fruits and vegetables and suggests "eating around the edges of the supermarket" and staying away from processed foods. These are young, new markets and at the moment they're small. The one at Petrosino Square has perhaps a few more vendors than the South Village market, but everything will change come September when people have returned from vacation and all that harvest produce starts rolling in. The market is in session from 10am - 2pm every Saturday until December 23rd. And these are not farmers' markets in the true sense. They are "real food" markets and feature food from not just farmers, but also "food artisans", or people who make things like pickles, zucchini bread, yogourt, etc. Last Saturday I picked up a delicious round of cheese bread and bag of pea shoots courtesy of Thanksgiving Farms, some unbelievable bacon from Cayuga Farms and a slice of delectably moist zucchini bread from Brooklyn's very own Angie's Exotic Bakery. Stone Ridge Orchards from the Catskills was in the process of unpacking big baskets of ripe produce and there was even a pickle stand going on with lots of free samples. Shopping at one of the Real Food markets is a great way to get to know local farmers and purveyors of down home, natural, sustainably raised food. It's healthy, it's tasty and it's fun!

I settled for baklavas which was tasty and still had really crispy top layers, almost as if I stepped onto dried leaves on a fall day, but with my teeth. It was also a good deal, about $1.50-$2 per piece. There were so much snacks that I wanted to try too and I did. I tried Crax and they're right, it's like crack, so good! They have a lot of Fujianese appetizers such as Chicken Feet with house special sauce. It's very different flavor from what I am used to. I also like the traditional sweet rice cakes. They are quite sweet and yummy. They also got sesame pancakes and lotus rice wraps! Very authentic Fujianese foods here and I am happy to be exposed to the culture this way!

((4.5 stars))…read more Meredith's Bakery is a Hudson Valley bakery that appears at many of NYC's greenmarkets from Union Square to Chelsea to Columbia University. stopped by their bakery stand at the Union Square Greenmarket year-round (Wednesdays only). this one of the larger tented stands where a variety of traditionally baked, gluten-free, and sugar-free items. the hand-made preservative-free baked goods are neatly arranged from breads cookies to pies to scones and more. ingredient lists are stickered on packaging, so you can check for allergens and such. ended up stopping here before the Greenmarket closed, so pickings were pretty thin and this bakery stand is fairly popular. ended up getting a pack of four small oatmeal raisin cookies and even though that isn't a go-to cookie for me...the cookie was very good. the oatmeal cookie was firm on the outside with a moist, chewiness on the inside. the cookie has a nice texture and clean flavor to it --the balanced sweet taste from the brown sugar and raisins with hits of cinnamon and almost caramel-like notes. tbh, if this bakery can make a good oatmeal raisin cookie, then the rest of cookies and such are more than likely really good, too. the service was quick and friendly-ish. definitely would recommend stopping by this Meredith's Bread at any of the greenmarkets in the city.

Definitely try the Walnut and Honey and Dates flavors. - Simple Fine Foods: They offer a wide assortment of British pies. They sell them frozen, so you can easily bake them to reheat at home. - The Lentil Co.: The Spiced Crunchy Mung Lentil snacks are addicting. - Wave Hill Breads: The highlight here is their focaccia.
