My experience today was my last at this supermarket. Their deli workers were incompetent and rude. They not only got the price for my first order wrong, they told me to "Calm down" when I corrected them. Instead of apologizing for the error, they attack the customer. Who does this? Considering their high prices and lack of choices, you'd think customer service would be paramount. Instead, they overcharge and insult you to boot. I'd suggest never going there. Try the ACME or Whole Foods instead. The prices are lower and the quality is comparable. Kings doesn't live up to the name. You're not treated like one, but rather like a peasant. read more

Sometimes, I want to save some money and buy a generic brand instead. Many times, I have found that I've been disappointed with the quality of generic food items. In the long run, I end up spending more money having to buy a brand item. Kings Supermarket saved the day by carrying their own line of fine food along with a lower cost! I just want to share my experience having had some Thanksgiving dishes "catered" yesterday. First of all, everything comes "chilled" (refrigerated or frozen? when was it made? No idea). This is stated in a note at the bottom of the catering tab. At no point in the description of any food or in the process of placing the order is anything stated about the food not arriving hot and needing to be cooked . Should I have read the website more carefully? Should I have called to ask questions? Maybe. But catering is expected to be cooked fresh and hot imo and if that's not the case it should be clearly and boldly stated at every step of the ordering process. Now I was charged $25 for a delivery fee for a delivery that was taken 1 mile down the road. I expected Kings to make the delivery but it was actually handed off to DoorDash. Now, I order from DoorDash all the time and it would not cost me $25 for that delivery so where did the money go? Also, I have my own DoorDash account and a subscription that allows me not to pay delivery fees. If my food was coming through DoorDash, then let me use MY account and save on the delivery fee! It just doesn't make any sense. The food came cold as stated, which was unexpected and annoying. In addition, two side dishes were sent in plastic containers that were not oven safe. So you have to cook it AND you need pans to cook it in. The turkey came in a very cheap tinfoil pan that was oven safe but it had a hole in the bottom, which leaked all the juices. At first I thought they spilled out from the top, but after placing the turkey in the oven with stock (which I needed to have and fortunately did) it started dripping from the bottom, causing my oven to smoke. Overall, the lack of transparency in this transaction was very disappointing and I feel ripped off, especially concerning the delivery. Kings has been our go-to neighborhood grocery store for as long as I can remember. Do they have a very diverse section in the "international" aisle as I'd like? No, but they do have more than most. The employees are so funny. I mean, REALLY funny. Even if you just ask them where something is, by the time they lead you to it, you'll both be laughing. The men at the seafood counter are somehow both gruff and sweet, and it's so delightful. Hearing the banter amongst the bakers and deli staff is awesome and the sushi chefs truly know their stuff! The cashiers are enthusiastic and sweet but can also read your energy if you're clearly in a bad mood and just want to get out of there. All around a wonderful place. read more

This store is always very clean and well stocked. The employees are super friendly! Here's what I don't understand: A) there is a sign on the entrance that states "due to a new law in Montclair we must charge 10 cents per bag to all our customers" ... if that's true, how come the Acme Market that's about 4 blocks away doesn't charge for bags???? (Picture attached) B) when you go to pay using cash you are asked by the cashier if you want to round up your tab with the excess going to a food pantry in town. I feel like this puts some customers on the spot; is insensitive to those customers that might not be able to round up; and, the prices in this store are all a bit higher than supermarkets in the area. Maybe the store should be more discreet? Or maybe they should donate and do some sort of 'matching' incentive for customers. I just think that charity is a personal choice that should be left personal. read more

Fine basic supermarket. Its a nice size, easy to manage. AS a result you can be in and out pretty quickly. But also as a result they don't have hundreds of options or choices for each thing. Employees are nice. The service here is pleasant and fast. Produce is fine,. Not the best around, but will probably meet your needs. They're not cheap, and they don't have scotch bonnet peppers or a Jamaican food section. But I'll drive the extra 1.2 miles to avoid whole foods prices and A&P shenanigans. Fruits are fresh, meats are beautiful, cashiers are friendly, the place is clean and well organized. And the bakery selection is so good, you'll drop your diet. The deli has Boar's Head products but the King's brand stuff is just as good. I have an addiction for their roasted chicken, wings and potato wedges. Their all not and bagged up neatly... Anyway it's under control now and I can walk away whenever I choose. Anyway I miss Publix's deli section, and everything else for that matter, but this'll do. Their reusable bags are kinda fancy and I've used them for picnics and stuff. If Stop & Shop were closer, they might have some competition, because $$. But I feel somewhat classier going there... In my track pants and no makeup. Plenty of parking and those cute 1/2 carts for small visits; It's like shopping in Europe! I have been going to Kings for as long as I can remember. Believe this or not, as a kid when my family took me to Kings in Cedar Grove, they sometimes had live classical music playing! The food from the deli tasted like someone's grandmother made it. Ok maybe I'm romanticizing it just a little bit. Unfortunately, this place has turned into a money hungry establishment with no ethical code. I've heard employees tell me they are constantly cutting back on their hours. Meanwhile, I've been charged 30 dollars for cherries. Do I stutter?? Good luck treating this like a regular grocery store. You won't be able to pay for your kids to go to college. Went to order a Maine lobster. The man who works the seafood area convinced us to get tails. He slipped them into our cart and they wound up being Nicaraguan. This store has a very good selection of cheese, and other specialty items such as Stonewall Kitchen and D'Artagnan products. I really liked their fish section. However, I was disappointed that they did not have skyr yogurt nor did they have any kosher meat. [And why didn't they have hazelnuts? They had everything else] Their produce was comparable to Whole Foods but not worth the additional costs. DO NOT BUY any regular grocery items such as coffee, tuna, etc. They will be 3x as expensive. Loved this place. Went in a week ago looking for something specific and discovered a great market. You'll find high quality everything! Yes the place is expensive but I think it's worth it. And you'll find things you won't find at your neighborhoods big chain supermarket. Great fruit, vegetables, meat, cheese and fish and see food., olives and salads and much more. Kings in Upper Montclair just added self check out counters. I think there are approximately four self check outs. The other five checkout counters only had one checker. It's Sunday, a big shopping day. I go to Kings because they are convenient. I think that since plastic bags have been outlawed by Montclair, they are exploiting the issue by now charging $.10 per bag up from .05. Their poorly worded sign implies that Montclair is requiring that they charge for paper bags. This is been going on a while and I'm just mentioning because now with the self check out and no bags it's more like shopping at Costco or any other big box store. There is nothing convenient about it and they charge top dollar for everything. As mentioned in other reviews, always check the sell by date on items. All items not just perishable ones. There are items I buy there which are worth the trip but it is now ridiculous to pay these prices. The store will go from being partially empty to completely empty in no time unless you restore some service to the store. read more

This is simply the best supermarket in Montclair. Great selection; excellent service; everything is always fresh - dairy, meet, veg, etc. Some folks say that their prices are high, but I disagree -- there are lots of things on sale, always good prices on meat and seafood. I HAVE to review this establishment for several reasons. First, I have been a loyal Shop Rite grocer, but in Montclair, there are no nearby. I live closest to A&P and Whole Foods, however, I have gotten rancid/expired products from both. The A&P is pricey. So why King's? EVERY TIME I go, the staff is insanely friendly. Not to the point of being annoying, but just so happy and helpful. They also have the best sushi from a grocery store I have ever had. I shop at the Upper Montclair location every Sunday. Every employee knows my name and greets me with a smile.... sometimes a handshake or a hug. They make you feel like a friend or a family member. They all know my preferences and go out of their way to make sure I am always accommodated. Even the manager goes out of his way to say hello and ask if he can help me. Lets be realistic.... the store is located in Upper Montclair so the prices are not the lowest. However the service, quality and attention to detail are well worth the extra cost. read more

The store is clean & well stocked & while it is on the small side, it's perfect for those frequent trips to pick up essentials & specialty items. Overpriced for most items, even more expensive than Whole Foods.. but why? Staff need training in how to pack groceries. Raw chicken, fish and other meat should NOT be in the same bag as ready-to-eat sandwich meat or rotisserie chicken or fresh fruit or veg. Raw items should be in a bag of their own. Hard items go at the bottom, while soft and easily bruised/crushed items (herbs, pears, avocados, bananas and chips) go at the top. Greet and thank ALL your customers the same way, not just those you feel favorable towards for whatever reason. read more

I wanted to get something from the olive bar but they were closing it down by 8 pm . One of the workers was nice about it but i still couldn't get what I wanted. Another worker was literally covering up the food while i was trying to get something from the olive bar. No apologies, no eye contact. Nothing. If i had gotten an explanation that they close the olive and salad bars by 8 pm i would have been understanding but i got nothing . I wasn't even greeted by the workers. They were literally covering the food and taking away the dressing at the salad bar as I was trying to get something from it . Like ok , i guess I'll take the hint. Hello. I love the store. I shop 3 times a month. My problem is the parking, and the and the way they are handled. I was between 2 cars waiting to park one of he got loose and hit my car. My car is scratched considerably and every time I see that I get upset that could have been avoided if the people did their job properly, I don't see my self going back any more. read more

The produce employees are always so professional, helpful and friendly, I love how clean and organized the store is but my latest encounter really has me questioning how much money and time I spend at this establishment. The deli employee was so so rude and short with me I am still in awe. Can't believe I've not written a review of this go-to grocery store of ours (my family). Growing up in Montclair, this is where the shopping got done and continues to get done for the most part as their food is often fresher and better than A&P. They are, however, more expensive and there are just certain foods that you go to other places for (like Zabars in NYC for Jewish food). However, they're not pretentious and snobby like Whole Foods. Employees have always been between pleasant and downright friendly and almost family-like since we've been going for so long and Kings has rolled out new foods such as their introduction of sushi several years back. Their homemade chicken soup is one of my all-time favorites. This is also the only place where we can really go in town to simply get two rolls of quarters (10 bucks each) for the laundry and not have it be a hassle. It is nice walking through Upper Montclair town center to get here from our home. read more

Kings is great for seafood, produce, meats and poultry. The quality and freshness of the product is what you pay for. Pete Gardner the manager is the best. Larry Avella the seafood manager and shop steward is the best. Always is kind and generous with his time. He understands the customer and is driven to help the customer. Ray/Andrea in produce and Alphonse the meat/poultry manager are fine examples of their employees. The choices for food shopping are plentiful in our area but freshness, consistency and quality are what separates the stores. The store manager is excellent as the store is clean, organized and modern. read more
