The good news is that The Hamilton Mercantile has risen from the ashes of the old general store, and it's a welcome breath of fresh air in a town that needs it. It's clean! And bright! They have nice tables! And since it's pretty much the only game in town for a lot of things, I'm glad they have tons of grocery staples (eggs, milk, butter, beer, hard seltzers, bread, canned food, peanut butter), toiletries, ice, candy, ice cream, and more. They've got lots of camping supplies, such as s'mores ingredients, propane, wood, camping chairs, charcoal, fishing gear, hand warmers, tarps, bug spray, matches, etc, as well as toiletries and tylenol and toys and floaties and charging cords and clothing and gifts and a lot of other things you never knew you needed. I'm particularly happy that they have Boar's Head meat that they sell by the pound, as well as make sandwiches. A girl eating at one of the cute little tables had herself a good-looking breakfast sandwich too, and there's also a pretty extensive pizza and wings menu now too. Haven't had the pleasure of eating any of those yet, but I'm sure it'll happen soon. Best of all, they sell lottery tickets. And when I win the $1.5 billion mega millions tonight, I believe The Hamilton Mercantile gets $1 million for selling me the winning ticket. And I think they deserve it.

Now, most "general stores" you encounter these days are actually just shops that specialize in selling things that nobody really needs, but some might want: gifts, novelty items, knick-knacks, vintage clothing, etc. Lakeside, on the other hand, is pretty much the only game in town. This means they are what I imagine is an accurate reflection of what Wells, an adorably quaint village that is somewhat stuck in the 1950s (I mean that in a good way*), needs. This clearly includes, in addition the the videos, bait, and propane promised on the sign: Bug spray, sunblock, s'mores fixins, beer pong supplies (cups and balls), hot dogs, milk, orange juice, eggs, ExtenZe, condoms, chips, beef jerky, sandwiches, camo gear, water guns, and much, much more. ____________ *A bingo card at the annual fair costs 25 cents.

They also have excellent deli sandwiches. The Soprano is their take on a classic Italian mix, and the Amore is thick slices of prosciutto with balsamic dressing and fresh mozz and arugula. Get one to go along with a drink, and enjoy it in one of the many public open spaces in Round Lake on the other side of the Northway. *Prices are on the blackboard, but dry aged steaks are not on display because they are cut to order as they should be.
