You can walk to the beach via the footpath that passes in front of the hotel, The Marginal Way is only about a 5 minute walk, and there are shops and restaurants just off property. The rooms are comfortable, several include kitchenettes and have water views. I've always styed in the main building, and I love the sitting room, the ocean view from the breakfast area, and the covered porch. We travel with a white noise machine, but I've never had a problem with noise here. The beds are comfortable and the hotel is very clean. Breakfast is included and consists of a variety of breads & bagels, fresh cut fruit, oatmeal, yogurt, coffee, tea, hot chocolate. It is all high quality, and the fresh fruit is the highlight for me. Love being here and can't wait to come back next year.

However, if you're like me, and you want a full vacation experience and hotel with a lobby and some amenities, with a pool, private balcony, a room with a beach view, and a fun experience hanging out in the room on a rainy day, or relaxing at night with wine and cheese, just know this is a simple little place and not all rooms are spacious and have views - you will have to make sure you reserve one of the larger rooms with a view. And the hotel is all about location, not frills. We made our plans late and got a garden level room, which was clean and had a comfortable bed, but, well, it's a garden level room with no view, facing a parking lot, with ultra low ceilings and was kind of cramped. Still, it had a nicely redone newer bathroom and shower, a functional air conditioner and it was convenient that there was a mini fridge, microwave, coffee maker, toaster oven (for slices) and a sink for dishes etc so you don't have to fill up your coffee maker with water from the bathroom sink lol! We got lucky and had beautiful beach weather for every day of our stay so we just used the room to shower and sleep and spent time at the beach, walking Marginal Way, exploring Perkins Cove, shopping, trying different restaurants and having ice cream at night on one of the many public benches for people watching. This hotel does have a pretty lawn with some tables and chairs for all guests to use and that was nice in the morning with coffee. But if you reserve and get a garden level room, I wouldn't recommend that in the off season, or if you are unlucky and get rainy weather.

Needs improvement: the restaurant food is pretty good but the service even at breakfast when it's not that crowded is extremely slow. Verdict: This used to be one of my favorite places to come to. But it doesn't feel the same anymore. I think there are probably other places where you could save 1 or $200 a night and still enjoy the beauty of the town and not leave scratching your head wondering how you spent so much money at a place where the food is often mediocre, and the rooms are maybe a step above a motel.

Located right on the Marginal Way, the view cannot be beat. They have signs advertising their restaurant and bar at their Marginal Way gate, and we always take a break from walking to go in and order a cocktail, which we then enjoy sitting on the plentiful lounge or adirondack chairs while taking in the ocean view. All of the employees here are friendly and the bartenders are super nice - I always ask them to make me something sweet with muddled blueberries, lemon and vodka and they always come up with a delicious & refreshing concoction. We stayed in a first floor room in the South wing. This was a short anniversary getaway so we decided to splurge on a view rather than staying in the reliable Hampton Inn & Suites a short distance away. This room is an "efficiency" similar to those that I stayed in with my parents in the 70s when we were traveling on a very small budget, but that is not how The Beachmere describes it. It had been appropriately cleaned, but that was about all it had going for it. The room was crammed with too much furniture. The bed linens were cheap polyester. The coffee maker was old and too large for the counter it sat upon, so it was awkward to use. The bathroom fixtures were the only updated area of the room but the bathroom was absurdly small with no privacy to get dressed. The exhaust fan in the bathroom didn't work so the toilet and shower area stayed damp for hours. There was mold growing on the curtains in the main area. The photos on their website made the room look nicer than it actually was and showed a different layout. For me, the accommodations are part of the vacation, especially when it's a special occasion and/or the weather doesn't cooperate, and this place did not deliver. It was over $400 a night at the end of the season (not beach weather) -- that's $12,000 a month! Even more concerning, when I called to book the room, the staff member on the phone told me this was "the nicest" of the rooms that were available. Yikes. This room could be lovely if it were thoughtfully updated -- if the bathroom and kitchenette were expanded to take up one wall and the bed was moved to the other, and they got rid of the extra twin bed and chairs and dresser, put in mini splits instead of old loud a/c units, etc. I've stayed in several charming rooms at New England inns; this wasn't one of them. There was nothing relaxing about this space, so we sat on the patio most of the time, even when it rained. Still, I loved the location and I would consider trying one of the adjacent resorts in the future, or maybe even The Beachmere again in a larger, more modern room. But I wish there had been more truthful reviews of this place so I knew what I was getting into. I hope this helps someone else.

The Sparhawk rooms are right at the water's edge and you have wonderful unimpeded views of the Atlantic, Ogunquit Beach, Little Beach and the outlet of the Ogunquit River, with the mesmerizing tides. Plus the views are due east and the sunrises are amazing. However- though the rooms are clean and comfortable with a private patio or balcony, there are some misses for a higher end "resort" property. Our balcony door's deadbolt lock didn't work (which is a safety issue!), the bathroom sink's drain stopper was broken, the walls are rather thin so you easily hear your neighbors (and snorers), and we had ants in the bathroom. Plus it would be nice to have in-room amenities like a coffee-maker (coffee, tea, hot water are available in the lobby but only starting at 7AM, so early birds like us in need of a morning brew are out of luck) and mini-fridge (for keeping those leftovers or desserts fresh - instead, we had to wastefully throw them out). The complimentary Continental breakfast is welcome but the offerings are on the scant side - there should at least be cut fruit available and it would be nice to have hot fresh oatmeal instead of instant oatmeal packets. There are many other choices to stay in Ogunquit that offer such amenities and are more sound-proofed, though perhaps not with the amazing views that Sparhawk offers. But if The Sparhawk would like to be a top-notch stay, I think they need to up their game a little!

If you take the trolley it is $5 per passenger each way and the service is erratic. Second, they do offer breakfast but the food is marginal. Across the street is a restaurant called the Omelette factory. It has food that is far superior as a breakfast option. Third, the shower is in a tube which is not great for seniors.

The man at the front desk was very helpful in teaching me how to use their keyless access. A part of me didn't like that there was no front desk attendant at all hours of the night for safety reasons, but then I also felt like I had the entire place to myself, which was also cool. Especially when I used their vending machine to get Ben and Jerry's ice cream at midnight. Come on, ice cream in a vending machine? A dream. I had the room in the very front of the inn on the ground floor. I didn't love this at first. There are windows everywhere and the view is the street. Anyone can see you in your room so the first thing I did when I got in was to shut the blinds, which was a bummer because beautiful light was coming in, the sun was setting, but I certainly didn't need anyone driving by or walking by knowing I had a room there and what I was doing inside! The room itself was fabulous. Enormous bathroom with a large vanity and incredible shower. Kitchenette with glassware, a sink, a bar, fridge, no freezer portion in the fridge however. The entry way of the room was beautiful, round table with chairs, a couch, coffee table and television. It would have been nice to have the television in my room to fall asleep to but I fell asleep on the couch instead. The bed had an armoire and it was very comfortable. There was a window in my bedroom overlooking Adirondack chairs with beautiful flowers. Attention to detail was apparent everywhere you looked. I had a front porch with a door, now even though it looked directly out onto the street, I enjoyed a cup of coffee out here first this in the morning and it was really just lovely and relaxing. They have parking spots in a private lot in the back. Check out is at 10, which is quite earlier, 11 would have been much more accommodating but it is what it is! I walked into town for dinner, it was a bit of a walk but doable and great exercise. It was set away from the hustle and bustle of town, which I liked. The breakfast in the morning left something to be desired, wasn't a fan of the coffee and it didn't seem like they had a ton of options to choose from. Breakfast is complimentary and they had such a quaint and beautiful dining area. Despite some of the things I didn't love about this place, I would absolutely stay here again and again and again. The man at the front desk also gave me recommendations for restaurants and bars to check out, he even gave me a map to hold onto. This seemed like the nicest inn I passed while in Ogunquit. Wall banging up till 11:30 at night. Noise, allowing children to run up and down halls screaming. We brought it up to front desk in the a.m. since they don't man desk at night and the staff's attitude was defensive and dismissive. As for a peaceful setting....Walk outside of every door there is a big outdated canister white camera in the MIDDLE of ceiling facing each room. Ridiculous. In the "common" area there are cameras everywhere on the ceiling! You can't sit and read a book without looking up and seeing a camera. The cameras make for a REALLY uncomfortable feeling in this so-called upscale "quiet" inn. ANY inn in the whole town would be a better bet for quiet and not having cameras stuck in your face. Pathetic waste of our money.

AMAZING! I have no words…read more We had the most wonderful stay here. They think about every detail. The cottage was just beautiful and so cozy. The location is insane. You're by the water and it's a quick 10 minute walk to the beach (when it's low tide). They have paddle boards, kayaks and you can even go on the pontoon when it's high tide. My husband, sons and I had been going to the dunes for 8 years as returning customers to our cottage at the dunes. it was what everyone in our family always looked forward to. Both of my sons could not wait to take our yearly family trip. it was our forever spot, where we envisioned our family generations going every summer. When my oldest went to college he would still come to the dunes, even flying from his internship in California out to our yearly two week dunes vacation because, yes, it was that special. I can't understate that it was an absolutely magnificent place, untouched by corporate greed, a little family operation. The only thing to mark the property was an un-assuming wooden sign, small and simple but well done - just like the dunes. if you went fast enough on the bustling touristy road you would miss it. beyond the threshold of pines that shield your view to this little ideal world, are incredible ocean views, simple little cottages, green grass, and lots of space, it was a simple little paradise. the dunes was simple, elegant and already expensive. now imagine 2x the cost and you get the idea. what used to be around 8,000usd for a two week stay ( and a full kitchen) is now around 20,000$ (with no kitchen)........ absolutely insane. whats more disappointing is the rebranding of the property as some luxury cottage getaway when the original architecture and entire feel WAS ALREADY MORE GENUINE than this rebrand!!! The whole idea of the dunes cottages were things are simple, like going back in a time machine, units aren't about new interior renovations and luxury finishes. its about time to connect with family outdoors, get away to a simpler time and remember what truly matters. shame on new ownership - truly commercialism at its finest. Well done management, you lost an 8 year returning client, and just know, we have since visited and this place lost what made it special.
