Location location location! This place is right in the center of bustling Ogunquit, with a quick walk to the beach and shops, coffee, restaurants. We did not use our car even once. However, if you're like me, and you want a full vacation experience and hotel with a lobby and some amenities, with a pool, private balcony, a room with a beach view, and a fun experience hanging out in the room on a rainy day, or relaxing at night with wine and cheese, just know this is a simple little place and not all rooms are spacious and have views - you will have to make sure you reserve one of the larger rooms with a view. And the hotel is all about location, not frills. We made our plans late and got a garden level room, which was clean and had a comfortable bed, but, well, it's a garden level room with no view, facing a parking lot, with ultra low ceilings and was kind of cramped. Still, it had a nicely redone newer bathroom and shower, a functional air conditioner and it was convenient that there was a mini fridge, microwave, coffee maker, toaster oven (for slices) and a sink for dishes etc so you don't have to fill up your coffee maker with water from the bathroom sink lol! We got lucky and had beautiful beach weather for every day of our stay so we just used the room to shower and sleep and spent time at the beach, walking Marginal Way, exploring Perkins Cove, shopping, trying different restaurants and having ice cream at night on one of the many public benches for people watching. This hotel does have a pretty lawn with some tables and chairs for all guests to use and that was nice in the morning with coffee. But if you reserve and get a garden level room, I wouldn't recommend that in the off season, or if you are unlucky and get rainy weather. read more

This is a beautiful property and we feel like we made the perfect choice for a week stay in Maine. Our condo is a good size with a separate living area and small kitchen. Everything is updated and modern. A nice touch is the Beekman toiletries. We love having coffee in the morning sitting on the wrap around porch with a view of the ocean. Everything that Ogunquit has to offer is within walking distance from Marginal Way House. There are so many restaurants and bars with patios to breathe in the crisp, fresh air. This vacation is going by too quick and we're already talking about when we can come back! read more

Location! Location! Location! You really can't get closer to the action than the Marginal Way House. If you've ever been to Ogunquit, you've probably walked by this well landscaped house on the way to the beach. There are other hotels on the ocean with cookie-cutter rooms, but the Marginal Way House has so much more character. From looking at the website each room has its own unique personality; it almost feels bed and breakfast like. I wanted an ocean view so stayed in Room 11 on the third floor of the main house. The bathroom was across the hall, but the view more than made up for this. The room was clean, and nicely taken care of. Even on the third floor the WiFi worked perfectly. There was a closet and a few drawers although space was somewhat tight I appreciated the house feeling. The shower had great water pressure and heat which is always important. The short interactions with the staff were all very positive. I called ahead to say I'd be checking in late and when I arrived I found my room with the light and the heat on like the "innkeeper" had been expecting me. The office staff was helpful to direct me when I had a questions. When I asked if I could checkout late they checked that the room wasn't occupied after me and that I could take the whole day! There isn't any type of kitchen or continental breakfast but there is coffee provided if you bring your coffee cup from your room down to the office. It was amusing to run into other guests in various states of alertness and dress in the mornings struggling to get their first cup. When I was there in the off season the prices were more than reasonable and I didn't notice any noise from the beach-walkers along the road even when siting on the large front porch enjoying the spectacular view from the main house. My only complaint was that the walls did seem somewhat thin; when the guests in the next room were talking loudly I could make out most of their conversation. Also when I was there the parking lot was almost full so it might be difficult if you have more than one car. I highly recommend the Marginal Way House if an amazing view and home-like decor and charm are your top priorities when staying in Ogunquit. read more

The location is awesome and the rooms are nice but they do need to work on their amenities. Internet went off for good periods of time, plastic toaster (not a lot to ask for a toaster oven), one ply toilet paper and knives knives that can't even cut a tomato. Yes and No. is it a well kept hotel? Yes. Near downtown, yes. Just keeping it real for everyone including seniors in our mid 60's like us. We were in room 109 the room is nice and clean, wood floors, two windows with an air conditioner and plantation shutters. 2 wicker chairs a TV and a small refrigerator. The bed although pretty comfortable was so high you can't sit on it, and Im 5"8. For me that makes it hard because no matter what you're trying to do , get dressed or just sit on the bed you can't. I had to lay down on the bed and getting in and out I was a little difficult. It was a rainy weekend so coming in and out of your room there is nothing to put your shoes on or wipe them off with, no mat. One of the hardest thing about the room was even though it's only on the second floor the stairs are SO steep that it's really hard to get up and down to carry things, the stairs are also narrow so if you have any mobility issues like I did with my foot it makes it pretty hard. There's also no breakfast here and no place to dine outside. Disappointing since ogunquit doesn't have alot of breakfast options. so there's a porch but there's plastic put up, so theres no view from the back porch. (The website doesn't show plastic sheeting) So we were here with another couple so there was no place with the rain to eat together or sit together because it was cold and blowing windy rain and there's no common area inside. Really good experience here. Clean, cozy rooms on the beach, close enough to walk into town for meals and shopping. The only issue we had was housekeeping not giving us more shower gel, and the second day, they only gave us one fresh towel for the two of us. Otherwise, no complaints, and we'll be back. read more

We stayed in room 14 up on the third floor this past weekend (June 2012) during the most miserable weather imaginable for June. The pelting rain never let up! But, luckily we were so close to town that we bolted our way over to a few bars on Saturday evening. If you stay here, you are right in the middle of everything, off the main street by about a block and overlooking the ocean. If you surveyed the whole town - this is the location you would want. They also have a whole bunch of chairs and loungers on the expansive grassy area over looking the ocean. Next time I spend the night in Ogunquit, I'm coming back here and booking early enough so I can get an ocean view next time! Managers - if you are reading this, it would be very, very nice if you could stock some kind of milk or milk substitute for the morning coffee. Pretty please! Thanks for the decaf. read more

I love the place but I don't like the "rain shower " that comes from the ceiling. I don't wash my hair everyday and it is impossible to take a shower with that kind of shower without ruining your hair... They should have it ON THE WALL at least !!!! read more

We booked a room at the Marginal Way house for a weekend in July and it completely exceeded any expectations that we had. The room was clean and cozy and the location cannot be beat! Within 5 minutes you can be at bars, restaurants, and the Marginal Way itself. Our favorite thing, however, was the lawn. We had the expectation of spending our days at the beach, and while we did go to the beach a few times, we spent the majority of our relaxation right on the lawn at the hotel. It is directly across the tidal river from Ogunquit Beach, so we got to experience the beach in the privacy of the lawn. At dusk, the guests of the hotel come outside and bring their wines and cheeses and congregate until it gets dark. It is such a unique and wonderful thing that we didn't miss it every night. The staff was friendly and our experience could not have been beat. I would recommend the Marginal Way House to anyone! read more

A fantastic discovery! I can't say enough about this wonderful place! It was absolutely perfect for my "me time" getaway! I stayed in Dockside and the water (during high tide) was right outside my door! The view cannot be beat. The room was lovely. I've always stayed on Shore Road, but this is now my go to destination in Ogunquit! Don't hesitate to stay here! There are lots of options for all kinds of parties! read more

We have been coming here for long weekends every Summer over a great many years and last year we stayed at the motel section for the first time. We loved it and were able to reserve the same unit one year ahead of time last Summer. This year do far we have had one large and several small issues. The biggest issue was that we had extremely weak internet signal. I as not able to connect either my iPhone or my iPad. Some smaller issues was that the cleaning ladies did not make up our room on Saturday. Also there were no grab bars in the shower or a bench that I could rest my feet on to wash my legs. Small inconveniences but the location is what we come for and that doesn't disappoint read more

I rented Room 115 in the Main House for $200/night. My experience overall - great! No ocean view but a lot of light from the windows on the 3 sides of the room. This is a corner room on the 3rd floor facing Wharf Lane and Shore Road. Noise level - minimal to none. Loved the fact that the beach was a walking distance even though the tidal beach pool is just across it. No complaints other than I wished I could've had an ocean view. Would stay here again but I would like to try other boutique or beach terrace hotels. read more

I stayed here with my husband and our 21-month old August 2-6th and we absolutely loved it. We stayed in room 202- an efficiency apartment. This place was even better in person than what we saw on their website, totally exceeding our expectations. Our deck overlooked the river/ocean. Everything was brand new- granite countertops and stainless steel appliances in the kitchen, a beautiful bathroom with a huge walk-in shower and a beautiful bedroom with a king bed and chandelier. Everything was super clean and there was even a pleasant smell to the place (not like a cleaner, though). The location of this place was perfect- close enough to walk to the beach and walk into town, which is very handy with a toddler. We have a feeling this is going to be our yearly family vacation spot! My only complaint was the door slamming by other guests in the same building; there was another room on the same floor and two on the second floor and I guess people just don't realize they are slamming doors and stomping up and down stairs. The doors in general in the building seem to not fit the frames well and our bedroom and bathrooms doors needed to be forced closed if we wanted them shut all the way. The noise from the other guests didn't wake our toddler which is the most important part! :) WIFI signal was not good. Can't wait to go back! read more

As I draft this review I'm having coffee overlooking the ocean and listening to the crashing waves. I was in Portsmouth for work and gay friends said to come up here so I tried to find any hotel around to stay at, strictly on price and distance from the clubs. When I called here I was told they had a "dungeon" room for $69. I was very skeptical and called around find no vacancy or rooms over $300. She told me she would hold the room till 1 for me to look at. I couldn't have been happier. my "dungeon" was super quaint an had a ocean view. The resort is wonderful and has a view of the ocean, is 2 blocks from the club, has parking, the Marginal Way is directly beside it as is the foot path to the beach, Free WIFI and coffee. The staff seem helpful and nice. A Hilton it is not, but I'm glad it's not. read more

I love this place. The staff is really friendly. The view and yard are beautiful. And it's very close to a lot of stores, restaurants and attractions around town, including the beach and the Marginal Way Walk. The only thing is that if you want to get a good view or certain room, you have to book a while in advanced. But overall it's a really pleasant experience. Was exactly what I expected...great location close to center of Ogunquit and walking distance to the beach, and to the stunning Marginal Way walking path along the cliff. It has a great view of the ocean, and its magnificent high and low tides. Marginal Way House had several different buildings, all quaint and cozy. I booked at the start of the off season after summer, so I got a great rate. From other reviews, it sounds like other rooms may have been renovated and much nicer. My room was a bit of a downer, given that the property was so fabulous...dark, and even darker once I had to shut all the shades since being on the first floor, there were direct views inside the room from the closest building and anyone walking by the back porch of the building. The room smelled of the ocean...a bit mildewy. Everything was just a bit dated, and the bed was a tad uncomfortable...wish the mattress pad extended over the entire double bed, and that sheets and blanket were a bit more plush. The air conditioner only had two settings, off and on (a very loud on)...though I was very happy that there was an air conditioner. There was a small fridge, which was nice for chilling beverages. Bathroom shower was a standup shower, and it definitely needed some cleaning (with mildew building up around the edges) and renovation (grout on the tiles). Cute Philosophy bath products, but I wish they refilled, since I stayed for 3 nights. Maybe I just picked one of the rooms that wasn't as updated. Luckily, the weather was perfect during my visit, so I spent most of my time outside and exploring Ogunquit and the rest of the southern Maine coast. There is 1 assigned parking space, for each room, which is great since there is no parking on the tiny street. Staff was so friendly and nice, with a great recommendation for dinner nearby. Wifi is free, and worked most of the time in the room, in the common living room of my building. and porches of all the buildings. Definitely not a chain hotel, and that is a positive. While I was not expecting luxury with my bargain rate, I wish the room was a bit cleaner and more updated. If I had paid peak season rates, I may not have been as forgiving. read more

The real problem in writing anything about the Marginal Way House, from a visitor's perspective, not the proprietor's perspective, is that it is so good one wants to keep it to one's self so that it does not get too crowded. Ogunquit gets crowded in season anyway, and the Marginal Way House is a wonderful place to stay. For several years I have stayed in Room 25, a cottage by the water. It has a small stove and refrigerator, a living room, and two beds. The sun rises through the large living room window each morning. If the weather is "bad", being in the room is fantastic during those hard Maine coastal storms. The proprietors give good service and value for the location. They are a dog friendly location, at least during the fall. Dogs are not permitted on the beach in Ogunquit during most of the year, but may go onto the beach as of October 1. The beach is about a five minute stroll from the Marginal Way House; one does not rush in Ogunquit. Harbor Candy Shop and Bread and Roses, among other stores, are nearby too. read more

My sister and I booked a spontaneous trip to Ogunquit to read on the beach and relax for the weekend. Marginal Way House was perfect for what we needed..,a spot in walking distance to the beach and a place to sleep. They also had a nice porch and patio area to watch the sunrise or have a cocktail. It's a decent and clean place but there are no extra frills. I would recommend bringing snacks and drinks to stock the fridge because the inn does not have any food/beverage options available (with the exception of coffee on the morning). My husband booked us a very last minute trip to ogunquit this weekend to celebrate my birthday and we were lucky a room opened up in the newly renovated 4-unit house on their property. We had our own private balcony with a beautiful view of the river and Ogunquit beach. Short walk to the beach, short walk to the town for shopping and lots of great restaurants, and the beautiful ocean cliff walk was right down the road. Amazing location, pretty good pricing as well considering how beautiful the room was and everything you got with it. The suite we got was beautifully renovated, clean, and had no issues. The staff was very accommodating and specifically the girl who checked us in was extremely welcoming, friendly, and seemed sincerely interested in our happiness during our stay. This inn has a beautiful lawn area with tables and chairs to enjoy wine in the evening or even breakfast in the morning, overlooking the ocean. It was such a peaceful spot. I highly recommend this place and I will definitely be planning a trip back here!! read more

I was last minute looking for something close to everything with an ocean view and I didn't care if it was expensive. I saw there was one unit left and jumped at it. Now I know why it wasn;t booked. Unit 302 Is very dark and probably the only unit without an ocean view. During the night, there were loud noises underneath our room, like a motor or sump pump that kept waking us up. Otherwise, the place is nice, clean and friendly, but I would not stay in that unit again. Way too much money for nothing. At least the other units could see the ocean without going to the lawn. read more
