I love this place! I usually don't write reviews but I had such a great experience here - I had to share. So, I called Thursday looking for an appointment for Saturday morning. Called and booked easily. Saturday comes - I'm hungover as hell from Friday night, Called in to be annoying and see if I could push my appointment out so I could get my life together. Kindly, they did this without any issues!! On top of that, I was still a mess and showed up like 6 mins late (Yeah, I'm awful) BUT anyways, I get there and am greeted with a hug by the sweetest stylist, Justin Jay and his little cute yorkie, Bonkers. We go straight to the chair and get to work (And again, I'm hungover but Justin was so friendly and is so fun to talk to - that I literally forgot about my hangover. I love Werk and Dimitri! I've been coming to him for a year now. When I first came, my hair was a mess from using products that weren't working, a couple bad dye jobs, and living in an arid climate before moving to SF. My hair basically was not growing, and it was breaking off. Through a few cuts, a couple products, and a few colors from Dimitri, not only is my hair the healthiest it's been in probably 6 years, it's growing! And growing quickly! And not breaking off! As someone who has been trying to grow out a former bob for 6 years, this is huge for me. Beyond having awesome results, Dimitri himself is so great. He's very kind and a great conversationalist; he seems more like my friend than my hair stylist. He's extremely knowledgable too. Oh and some basic things- the salon is clean and welcoming. Demitri deserves not just 5 stars but 5 gold stars. So professional, talented, kind, and great conversationalist! I've been desperately needing a hair cut. For years I've been spoiled with a talented hairdresser as a sister in Long Beach. When she moved to Austin... getting a haircut has been a challenge. I'm very reluctant to try just any salon just because they have 5 stars. I've tried a couple of fancy smancy salons paying over $100 for a haircut and they gave me good/okay haircuts but nothing outstanding. To give them some credit, my hair definitely has some challenges. I have stick straight asian hair, thick and I don't have a lot of it. I saw a friend on Monday and complimented her on her haircut. She raved about Werk Salon and told me about Demitri. His work speaks for itself. I called the salon and left them a voicemail on Thurs eve blabbing to their machine how I need a haircut, I work in Walnut Creek and that though I'd love to come in during the week, they're probably close by the time I get into the city. To my suprise, by Fri morning Demitri called me back and he informed me that he has a late appointment, and that if I can make it by 730, he'll fit me in that eve. Did I mention that Friday was Halloween?! I must say skipping the whole dressing up and going out with friends drinking on Halloween was totally worth it! Halloween 2014 was spent getting my beauty on with Demitri doing his magic on my hair while I sip on a glass of wine. I had told Dimitri I'd wanted something similar to my previous cut and color: long layered haircut and blonde highlights with a very subtle dark burgundy lowlight that looked brown and natural until the light hit it and it had just a hint of fun. I used the words subtle and professional at least a dozen times. I told him about my conservative government internship and that I had a big meeting coming up. He discouraged me from the dark burgundy color and every other dark wine-colored low light I picked out, saying they'd be too wild. I was surprised because I'd had them done before and it looked quite natural. I then asked him about rose gold tones. He said ok. I repeated that I wanted it to be subtle and showed him pictures and said, 'it's going to look like this, right?' And he said yes. He dyed my hair fuchsia. Big blotches, total uneven. Dyed my scalp as well. I literally cried when I put my glasses on and saw the nightmare. Insisted I pay him $230 to destroy my hair anyway. He said he'd have his stylist, Justin, fix it the following day. Justin did the best he could - this review is not for him - but the fuchsia color just won't come out. It's still not work-appropriate and nothing like I had asked for. Justin said he'd call me in a few days to see if some of the fuchsia color had washed out. I didn't hear from them after 4 days and came into the shop. I asked Dimitri if they could either work on correcting it since I now have orange hair or return my money since it will cost me twice that to fix it. Dimitri was absolutely condescending and denied my showing him the picture of the subtle, highlights I'd asked for. Calling me a liar was just a bit too much. The pictures speak for themselves. I don't know how you justify this. Like many a bad stylist, he didn't seem to care what I wanted at all, just wanted to do what he wanted to do. Hate the cut too - not at all what I asked for, but too freaked out re my hair color to even address the cut. All I can think of is that he didn't like me and wanted me to suffer. I'm both inept and lazy with doing my hair, so he graciously provided tips for low-key styles and never cut my hair beyond my own abilities. Upon my request he also provided feedback on why certain colors and cuts worked for me, and why others may not. He and his team always accommodated me to find available times for special events - sometimes coming in early or staying late to help me (ex of special event style w/ extensions in picture). He takes his clients requests seriously and clearly communicates what he can do with respect to every client's situation.
