This has been my dentist for a few years, so I have had various experiences both good and bad. Good: There seems to be a super low staff turnover. So Since I have been coming here for the last 4 years, most of the same people have been there, which seems pretty great. The offices are quiet and very clean. The front desk guy Peter always remembers me, which makes for a real community feel. The hygenists seem to be very caring, if not sometimes kinda harsh. I got laid into a few times for not having enough done a good enough job flossing (which I needed). Not so good: Sometimes I feel like they might push for procedures that aren't super necessary. My former coworkers all used this dentist too. Some of them mentioned this, and I began to feel it might be true. Also, sometimes they were a little harsh. My gums are really sensitive and would even occasionally bleed during their procedures. When I indicated pain, sometimes the hygenists and dentist would act like it shouldn't actually hurt for whatever reason (even though I was literally bleeding). So I dunno. They are super competent and clean and high tech, but sometimes I have my reservations about them. read more

A year and a half ago I came in for a promotional offer exam for X-Rays and preventative check up. Dr. Barranco saw me, gave me a decent teeth cleaning (which was an expensive add on, since it was all out of pocket). She also told me that the X-rays revealed that I had a small cavity and recommended coming back for a filling. I was surprised since I've never had a cavity in my life. I received a copy of X-Rays and consulted another dentist who examined the results and my teeth, and disagreed with the initial diagnosis. He told me that I was cavity free, and I have been ever since. I just saw another dentist and she double confirmed that I did not have any cavities. I see that other reviews for this office warns to beware of extra recommended procedures and treatments. I wholeheartedly agree. (I was also encouraged to have my teeth whitened, in addition to an unneeded filling procedure.) read more

Dr. Sengos fitted me with a crown for tooth #30, but it did not fit correctly. After trying literally to jam it in -- and appearing obviously frustrated and impatient -- he sheared so much off of one end that food has continually become trapped between #30 and #31 ever since. Since relocating from Manhattan, I've found that gum erosion and bone loss are now so severe in that spot that I have decay on the roots of #30. I will now lose the largest molar in my mouth -- because I cannot afford (1) periodontal work to repair the gum and stabilize the bone, or (2) a subsequent root canal procedure to save the tooth, or (3) a new crown that fits as it should. My situation is the direct result of Dr. Sengos' actions. A previous review I wrote here was deleted because it allegedly contained 'second-hand information'. All of the above -- now reported in a terse and impersonal manner -- is my own first-hand experience. My present dentist and another dentist I consulted at Westchester County Medical Center can verify my condition and that it was caused by the improperly fitted crown. On another note, Dr. Sengos was always reticent to offer me nitrous oxide because, in his words, 'the mask gets in the way' . My own relaxation and comfort were not the primary consideration. read more

I visited Dr. Demetrios Sengos twice for 1. checkup and 2. cleaning/scaling Dr. Sengos and his office staff were incredibly nice. As he was examining my teeth, he would explain to me what he was doing. At the end of my session, he told me I needed more than just typical cleaning, I needed scaling/planing because it had been a while since my last visit to the dentist. Then he asked me if I was happy with my smile because he can make it better. Um... I am... I think... wait, what? It turns out that he really wanted me to get some porcelain veneers. I told him that I was not interested and he asked me to think of a good reason why the next time I visited. I am suspicious of the work that the dental hygenist did for me at this office. First of all, it didn't take very long so I don't think she was very thorough. It was pretty sloppy and hurt like hell, too. I don't know why she didn't use any injection anaesthsia on the gums. She only dabbed a little on the surface. I had a gut feeling that she just didn't do a very good job. after hearing all the good reviews I'd made an appt to see the dentist. I was running about 25 mins late and the receptionist called me to see if I was still coming. I told her that I was and she gave me an attitude saying that I better get here soon or else they'll cancel my appt. b/c there are other people for their appt. I know I was late and I was sorry about it but she didn't have to be rude about it. I wanted to make another appt but she said next appt would be in feb. 2011 O.O I thought to myself ..BS and the last thing she said was "i'm sorry it has to be this way" . Great dentistry. I've been here 3x so far and had a great experience. 2 cleanings and once for a custom made mouth piece which I use daily for my sport. Dr.sengos and his staff are well experienced. Over the 20+ years I was a patient of the practice I was treated with care and compassion. The staff is very warm, attentive and professional. I saw Dr. Sengos for the first time after many years of neglecting my dental visits. I had several cavities, but Dr. Sengos talked me through all the cavity sites and helped make a plan to tackle the otherwise overwhelming (and anxiety-inducing) amount of work. When I returned a few weeks later to have three of my five cavities filled he fully delivered on his promise of pain-free dentistry. The front desk staff was knowledgable about dental insurance and very upfront with what procedures were the priority -- and which procedures could wait until my insurance would cover it. While I think it's a competent and friendly group of people at this office, I was rather stunned to get the email pasted below from them today. For the record, the only time I can remember changing an appointment without giving 48 hours was when I had to have cancer surgery. I just find it strange. #1 Weirdos. My poor experience with West 10th Dental is related to their "hard sell" of (probably) un-needed services and started from the moment I tried to make an appointment. When their phone receptionist looked up my insurance, he said that I get two cleanings per calendar year, and then asked that since my current cleaning appointment was in late November, would I like to have another cleaning in December. Of course, I don't think a second cleaning within a few weeks is really beneficial--the only benefit would be to West 10th Dental in collecting the fees. I declined, but was asked two more times when I arrived for the appointment! The hard sell really continued at the appointment. They did a an examination, with x-rays and measures of my gum line etc, then, sat me in front of a video explaining the virtues of a procedure that, lo and behold, they would recommend to me minutes later. Had the x-ray examination been examined before the video was cued? IDK. In spite needing to wait to discover if the now recommended procedure was covered by my insurance (it wasn't) they three times tried to rope me into an appointment for the procedure. When later I refused the recommended, not-covered-by-insurance $500+ treatment, I was emailed several days later saying that they would no longer see me. To wit they claimed they "make every attempt to establish a healthy dialogue with all of our new patients," apparently unaware that a dialogue would involve input from both sides. I have been a patient of Dr. Sengos since 1999. I have always received professional and excellent dental care over the years. Peter and Irene will work with you to make sure your appointments are scheduled and assist you with your dental insurance claims. The dental hygienists do an excellent job with your cleanings and provide recommendations to make sure you are taking good care of your teeth between cleanings. Over the years, I had various dental work done from cleanings, fillings, bonding, bleaching and crowns. I have never had an issues with any services over the years. If there was ever an issue with my dental insurance, Peter worked with my insurance to get the services covered within my dental plan guidelines. This past year I had cosmetic work completed. This included Invisalign, crowns and veneers. Dr. Sengos worked closing with me to ensure that I was happy with the progress throughout the entire course of treatment. "small filling" in wisdom tooth turned into everyone's worst nightmare. one of his 6 injections hit a nerve, causing a series of events: increasingly agonizing pain in the site, parasthesia, and inability to open my mouth more than half an inch. While Sengos was away on vacation, his colleagues were left to try to determine what happened -- but they were baffled, befuddled and completely helpless while i could barely move from the pain. FINALLY, FIVE days after the filling (and the pain began), they sent me to an oral surgeon, who ultimately had to extract the exact tooth that had started this horrific chain of events, bc the infection and pain had progressed so rapidly and intensely. 2 months after the fact, i was still not able to fully open my mouth. At 5 months later, there is still a finger-width of parasthesia in my chin. The receptionists are unpleasant and passive aggressive. They will tell you that he is running "on time", yet prepare to wait 30-45 mins in their dark waiting room. They overcharge and make no apologies about anything. They have a lovely hygienist, but sadly i wont return to see her bc of the rest of them. read more

JR Cassidy has been my dentist for about 25 years now, and I've always felt lucky to have him. He's a superb dentist, always keeping up with the latest technology and techniques and materials. I recently had two old childhood crowns changed, and he made it almost fun. Dr. Cassidy is incredibly gentle and shows real concern during every part of the procedures. He's also just a really nice guy, and it's always fun to catch up with him and his staff. Needless, to say, the crowns fit perfectly - he took time and got the impressions just right, and the extra time and care he always takes is part of what I appreciate so much. West 10th Dental is a nice, friendly, well-run place, right down to the lovely staff and the terrific hygienists who are also old friends at this point - oh, and the two sleepy old poodles who are the office mascots. Highly recommended. I can't imagine there's a better dental office in New York City. read more

I've been very hesitant to post this, but I truly don't want anyone to have to go through what I did. And then literally pay for it, financially and bodily. The front desk here is abysmal and incompetent. I should've known when the women wanted to photograph me when I just came out of a filling face completely numb, drooling on one side for their patient records. When I explained surely there is a better time she laughed in my face, what empathy! Went back for a cleaning, and my insurance had changed was VERY clear both over the phone and when i arrived, they told me it was fine and they could work with my new provider. Three weeks later got a bill in the mail for over 600 dollars, called them, said they'd work with me on it, cause they understand, didn't hear from them again. Scheduled another cleaning 6 mo the later. Guess what I had the pleasure of on arrival, a 600 bill and them telling me not to see the dentist cause my insurance didn't cover it. I literally paid them and walked out with no care. Thanks for nothing. Beware. read more

Dr. Sengos & later Dr. Cassidy have been my dentists for over 20 years, including an inlay, three crowns, plenty of routine checkups, & the odd filling. During a brief time when my former employer provided only a cheap excuse for insurance, I went to another dentist. Once. (Said other dentist went on & on about how beautifully done the inlay was, then botched a filling.) Never again. Yes, they occasionally have suggested whitening my coffee-stained fangs (I did have it done once, & was pleased with the results), but I've never felt pressured when I said no to anything. They've explained to me in detail what procedures would involve, when necessary, dealt with the fact that I am an extreme chicken in the dentist's chair (sorry), & provided terrific care every time. The hygienists are friendly & professional, & Peter keeps the office running smoothly (including dealing with my insurance company, which is no picnic). Highest recommendations. read more
