I've been looking for a new place to get my hair done that's closer and a little cheaper than where I've been going. I found West 86th and decided to try out Mallory. Oh my. I was not expecting the kind of aesthetic that I walked into. The salon is well lit, but not too much where you feel like you look ill in the mirror and it has such a cozy feel. Everyone seemed nice and welcoming. Mallory was waiting up front for me, greeted and introduced herself and then set up her station. We then went over the color I was looking for and type of cut. Not only did she take into account what I actually wanted done, but she explained everything and let me know why a certain decision was being made over another. She is currently an apprentice so her mentor came over to check on us a couple of times but she was doing great and barely needed guidance. The service took a little longer than we both expected but she was determined to get everything done so I could walk out happy. I'm definitely going back to her in a few weeks. read more

Time for a review update! My last pre-Covid haircut was in February 2020...and after 15 months, I was basically rocking a ponytail every day and this was getting old...I mean who cares on Zoom, but I'm starting to go into work more now, so I was so happy to take my fully vaccinated self to. finally get a haircut! They are taking things seriously here. Everyone, staff and customers, all wore masks, and the place is big making it easy to keep everyone spread out. All the stylists are great! Norma has cut my hair the past couple of times and is amazing. Per my previous review, my hair is a little tricky, so I really appreciate people who are truly skilled in cutting and styling hair. I love the convenience of the online scheduling system; no waiting on hold or for a call back to schedule an appointment. Yay! The atmosphere here is perfect for me too. Everyone is friendly and even when the place is busy, the vibe is relaxed rather than rushed. If anyone else is still needing their first haircut since pre-Covid, they have appointments available pretty quickly. It truly feels good to feel and look slightly more normal again! read more

So, I'm a serial Great Clips/Fantastic Sams/Cost Cutters customer. I hate having to make an appointment and wait, when I decide my fried ends need to go, they need to go! Plus, I'm cheap. But! I'm so glad I decided to take a step up and check out West 86th Hair Designs. I needed hair help bad, so luckily they had a cancellation and were able to fit me in within 30 minutes of calling for the first time. I had Jackie as my stylist, and let me tell you, she was great. She asked a lot of questions starting out about what I want and what I don't want, as well as how I style my hair in the morning and what products I use. She took her time with a soothing scalp massage and shampoo. She also really took her time on the cut while I chatted with her and relaxed and read a magazine. I'd say the cut took 35 minutes. What a difference that made! She took off *just* the right amount on length and made my layers the way I've always wanted them to be but couldn't describe how to do them. She gave my fine, straight hair some lift, volume, and shape. Overall, Jackie was a total pleasure and I left feeling I got a great value for the money. Pros: If I were going to rate the salon based on the person who cut, colored, and highlighted my hair, I would easily give it 5 stars. Mindy is fantastic at what she does! She cut, colored, highlighted, and styled my hair for 7 years, and I would always get a lot of compliments on it and was pleased with the result every time. Mindy would take my description of what I wanted and tailor it to my coloring. I don't know how but she seems to find the exact perfect shade every time. She's also very personable and professional. Cons: the manager. Hopefully the salon gets rid of this person because customer service is important and I wouldn't be surprised if she has run a lot of other people off to. As I said, I was a regular at this salon for 7 years. Then one day I'm dealing with this rude, unprofessional, and insulting woman whom I had never met nor heard of before. I'm a nurse so I know a thing or two about dealing with sensitive subjects in a tactful yet clear way. I guess she got the clear part right but tactful? More like "let me see if I can word this in the most inflammatory way possible. " The whole interaction left me hurt and confused as to why someone would choose to talk to a long time customer of her business in such a way. Especially someone who has always been polite and tips 20% or more every single time (although Mindy definitely deserved it). So if you can get an appointment with Mindy, jump at the chance, and hopefully you won't have to deal with the manager. Maybe she's been fired by now. read more

I found out about Clorissa @ West 86th Hair Design while listening to the Bob & Tom radio program (Q95 fm). She was actually a guest on the show when their regular host, Scott Potasnik's obsession with 'perfect hair' was featured. He's SO EXTREMELY particular about his hair cuts that sometimes his cuts take over an hour as he directs her 'hair by hair'. His hair has been the subject of many hours on Bob & Tom. (I wouldn't mention Scott's habits unless it wasn't discussed on the show. Clorissa NEVER talks about her clients, she's very professional). I rate Clorissa as the THE BEST stylist I've EVER had, truly. I'm very particular. Her cuts are EXACTLY what I ask for, I've NEVER been surprised by how much she took off, even when we chit chat. (Have you ever said to yourself, "I wish I would have been paying more attention instead of talking" during a haircut?). She doesn't use a razor to create layers (which creates fuzz with my long wavy hair), she actually goes in and cuts 'precisely irregular' to create lift. And her color and highlights are spot on. They fit my skin coloring, and it's always consistent. She tweaks it slightly depending on the season (lighter during summer). I just follow her advise about what can be done (and sometimes more budget friendly when needed) and she takes good care of me. She does fun, yet attractive coloring to her own long hair so I'm sure she's a pro at that too. Clorissa is so mellow, she's a great listener too. She's the type of person who will not say anything if that's what she senses a client wants. She's punctual and very professional. The salon is great too! You'll be surround by happy & friendly stylists, clean surroundings, comfortable sinks, free parking and lots of great restaurants of all price categories, (pizza to fine dining if you enjoy meeting friends before or after beauty appointments) and shopping in the shopping center. And, they always have other many other great valued items such as hair accessories, sunglasses, etc for super LOW prices! I just recently purchased a really cool leather look watch (that wrapped around my wrist a few times with accent chain) for around $5. Bought a great cloth headband for $6, net cosmetic bags 'for cheap'. Oh yes, Clorissa is creating another sideline to her hair business, and that's airbrush make-up. I'm so looking forward to her quality output there too. She works Monday's (if more privacy is important to you, the salon is much less busy Mondays). I'm SO THANKFUL to have her expertise. Coming home to Indy from Boston, where a partial highlight and cut is at least $140, I was really looking forward to cheaper prices, but I worried about being able to get as good of a cut. West 86th was a great find. I looked up hair salons on the Indy Channels A-List and I was impressed by the good reviews for West 86th. I called and was able to make an appointment for the following week for a cut and partial highlight with, well, I forget the name of my stylist. She was very pleasant however, and listened carefully to my concerns that my highlights look natural and that my layers not be too choppy. The results were good, not great, but the price was fantastic and I can't fault the customer service. read more

Went here because a friend picked this for her and her wedding party to get their hair done. I live really close so I arrived on my own and all the girls had already gotten there and they started us early which was a nice touch since I know the bride was anxious to start her long day! I loved my up-do and the other stylists did a really good job on the other girls. The bride's hair was GORGEOUS, it was like a work of art! The woman that did her hair wasn't even supposed to work that day but when another woman failed during the test run she agreed to come in for her. She was basically known as the "Queen of Up-dos". I didn't get the queen but I was still satisfied and it held up great for the day. The brides hair took longer than they had planned and they had to shuffle who was going to do her makeup (luckily we had plenty of free time). The hair stylist doing her hair said she wasn't going to rush and she was going to do it right, which I thought was really great to hear. Oh and the brides makeup was wonderfully done too! Only downsides? A bit pricey, this isn't my first wedding and it was a bit higher than I would have expected but at least they did a good job. Also, later that day a hairstylist pointed out that they used black bobby pins on my very blonde hair, which is apparently a big no-no! We were in and out with plenty of time to spare and while the bridesmaids waited for the bride a nice woman came up and asked us if we were all satisfied with our hair and if we needed any touch-ups or fixes which I thought really showed they cared. I had never been to this salon before and it was a step up from the usual cheap chain salons I frequent. I checked in and sat down, got lost in an article I was reading, then I noticed half an hour had passed without my name being called. I was miffed! The person I had an appointment with had not shown up for work and no one checked on that when I came in. The front desk staff were very apologetic and got me in right away with Stachia, who was absolutely wonderful. She talked to me about what I liked and carefully examined my hair, which is long and very curly. The hair cut was perfect- I have not had a cut this nice in years. Because of my wait, the haircut was free, and they gave me a bag with shampoo, conditioner and mousse. This, folks, is what good customer service is all about. I will return here and recommend it to friends. Only knocking one star off because of the initial mix up. read more

Yet another wonderfully done ombré! I came here earlier this year for a blonde ombré and just changed it to red and got a cut. It started off a little rocky but once I started asking questions and the stylist explained to me what she was doing it turned out wonderful. I have been to this salon twice. In January 2016, the stylist was attentive and personable, and listened to what I wanted for my haircut. I came out with a style I liked and was very pleased. I returned in May 2016 to find my previous stylist was no longer at this salon, and I was matched with a newer stylist. She was more interested in discussing her personal life than paying attention to what I wanted for my hair, and she failed to cut layers into my long hair, as asked. A quick review of the salon's website shows that she no longer works there either. I would say that this salon has good intentions; however your experience will likely vary based on your stylist. The particular hairstylist I had called me to cancel an appointment saying he "just didn't get the vibe..." last time (the only time) he cut my hair. Truth is, he "just didn't get the tip" because he spent quite a bit of the time he was cutting my hair talking about himself and his plans and talkig to other stylists walking past. the haircut was okay, but not worth $35. I selected this salon for my wedding party because I had just recently had my hair cut here as well. They did a great job so I felt confident that they would be wonderful to work with on my wedding day. I did do a trial run for my up do and when I left I liked it and we discussed all of the things we would change and do on the actual wedding day. After I left not even an hour later bobby pins were falling out and curls were dangling. It made me a bit nervous. On the day of my wedding the bridal party and I arrived promptly for our appointment but my stylist was running late. By the time I sat down we were running over 20 minutes late and if your a bride on your wedding day you know all the time counts. My stylist did a good job and was friendly to talk to she did make all of the changes I asked for from the trial and she secured everything well. When I left I was kind of in a "yup looks good gotta run mood" So after a few weeks later I decided to weigh the pros and cons. Pro's The location is nice and the salon has a nice look to it. My stylist was friendly and nice to talk to while she did my hair. She was happy to take suggestions and work to create the look I wanted. The salon was easy to work with booking all of our appointments and has text message reminders and follow ups. Cons I paid full price for my trial updo. I feel that if you are paying full price then you should have the quality hair style that you would get on your wedding day and I feel like I did not receive that. The day of while my bridesmaids were in there chairs having their hair styled I waited 20 minutes in the waiting area. I was on a tight schedule that day and everyone had to wait while I was finishing up my hair style. Reflection After looking back I would say that the price for my hair style was a bit costly and that I defiantly overpaid for the style I received. It was an average style. She did use several products and looking back at pictures I feel like I have received better styles at other salons for formal events. If I were to do a redo and were still using this business I would defiantly request "the queen of updo's" as she is referred to in other reviews. I know I was told she does not work weekends but it sounds like she might be available if asked. read more

my experience was awful. i called being a second timer there and wanted a recommendation on someone who was the best with blondes (( as finding someone who can do blondes good is very hard to find especially in indiana i have come to find out )) - i said ok to their recommendation. i go.. seemed to be going okay.. girl was nice. in the middle i found out it was this girls like 2 day or first week ridiculous.. how are you going to have a new client in your salon and recommend a brand new stylist that you barely know!? i get it, girl needs clients but seriously.. i was shocked. she's done with my hair and it literally looks THE EXACT SAME as i came in. i have NO idea what was done to it. my total was around $250! for literally some high lights. my hair was already ombre -- want to know what she charged me for ..
