I recently just finished my Full Time course at WCEMT in Riverside and I could not have had a better experience. The class was definitely a bit of a challenge but if you read the assigned chapters (especially before going into class that day) and study hard, anyone can pass. My instructor, Crystal Wyant, also played a large role in making my overall experience of the class great. She knows exactly what she's talking about and is very engaging when she presents her information. Crystal is very supporting, understanding, and patient. I've had plenty of questions to ask and she never once hesitated in answering them, even when it was during break/lunch. She is also very considerate. 9 hours a day inside the classroom is quite a while, but Crystal gives us quick breaks every so often so that we can stretch or eat a snack which I feel really helped me stay engaged throughout the entire day. Took the 10 week evening course. It's a lot of information in a relatively short period of time, but my Instructor (Toby) was a huge help with breaking things down and kept the class feeling light hearted and fun (despite us students feeling stressed and slightly overwhelmed at times). The skills instructors were also an incredible help with both the skills and were great breaking things down and helping reinforce everything we were being taught. I thoroughly enjoyed my time taking this course and would highly recommend having Toby as your Instructor if you're planning on attending. I came to Riverside West Coast on the heels of enrolling in another local hybrid/online EMT course about a year or so before. I'm working on changing careers midstream in life and wanted something accelerated. This course in general is very material heavy and will swallow you up quickly. Online didn't work very good for me (though I had somewhat recently pumped out a Bachelor's online putting in 10-12 hours a day) and I really realized this on the first day of instruction at West Coast under the tutelage of "Big" Shaun Hughes that I had previously been very ill equipped. Shaun is a former police officer and currently a licensed paramedic. He brings a lot of experience to the classroom from many different pertinent perspectives. I've sat in many college/university classrooms over the years in many different subjects (career life student..lol) and his teaching style is as good as any I have seen. His vivid power point presentations will not put you to sleep (as one of the other students from one of the other campuses claimed his teacher would do--death by power point). He uses the JB learning website to keep track of grades and assigned homework (a shout-out to Corey for her hard work keeping up with grading and secretary-ing--keeping the class moving smoothly) and Google Classroom to give students any additional resources they need to be successful. Use them! I chose the full time course, a 5-week course which really is a 4 week course with the last being a week of testing. At West Coast you must have at least an 80% overall in the class to be able to take the final in-class exam which then West Coast certifies you to sit for the NREMT national test. It is comprised of 4 blocks of material with corresponding quizzes and exams. Homework is 10% of the grade--do what you have to to get all these points--in essence they are free points. In-class quizzes (the day before the big exams) are 20%--study, use the online quizzes (even the ones that aren't assigned to help be successful on these quizzes), and learn early to use the study guides Shaun gives to help format the information. The exams are 70% of the grade--again use the study guides to help go through the book readings. It is a big book and will promise to put you to sleep--this is a great guide. My advise is not to study for the answers, but study for mastery of the material. At first, the class format seemed a little severe with the 80% bar and sergeant Shaun working you over. Shaun will work you over if he sees you are slacking--he don't play. I saw those who for their $1000 would come and sleep and claim they knew all the material and were top students in high school, but were not successful. I saw those he probably made mad at times that ended up being very successful. Sadly, we lost about 50% of the class by the end of week 4. In this class, you get out of it what you put into it. Like any other typical class, if you hit it hard early, it will set you up for the rest of the class. I think I figured I needed a 31% on the final test to pass. Shaun will seem to harp on the Signs and Symptoms notebook--yes...make a good one and know it well--it will serve you for the tests and for the NREMT. He genuinely cares about his students success and will push you to be your best (and to be a competent EMT). If you apply yourself these 4-5 weeks, you will be successful. If you can pass this class legitimately (without any quizlet cheats, etc. for the class), you will easily pass the national test. The national test was easier than Shaun's final. I know this was a wordy review, but committing $1000 and 5 weeks of your life is somewhat huge--hopefully this will help someone. My advice, if you can concentrate and take somewhat of a 5 week vacation and focus solely on the material, like a job, take the course. If you're a slacker, don't waste your money (or your parent's money). Shaun and Corey are class acts. read more

When you pay $1000 for a course you expect to succeed. This program does not do so. The EMT certification is tough, so when looking into a program you hope for the guidance & education to support that. This school makes you pay for every required item, they do not review tests to help educate you on why you missed answers . They basically are a pass or fail. No 2nd chances, no explanations. That's not how to teach our future medical teams. Choose a program that supports those with test anxiety, or may not learn as fast as others. When looking and asking for extra support or a request to retake a final test they say no. Pay again the relearn. SMH .. read more

just finished the full time course with crystal and overall can say it was a great experience! the course is difficult because you need to keep up with the readings and pay attention in lecture, and make sure that you make the time to study for this class or else you'll risk failing out. i took the nremt less than a week after i completed the course and passed, so you'll definitely be well prepared with wcemt! my biggest advice would be to get the slides from crystal, study them first, and use the reading to fill in any of the gaps. make flashcards or write notes and consistently review the information. make sure to do the reading and the signs and symptoms notebook ASAP! all in all, study hard, focus, take skills seriously, and you'll do just fine :) read more

Avoid this school if you can. They want you to fail so you can pay FULL price to retake the course again. Here's an option , if you're giving students a ton of information in one class sitting (which in fact isn't humanly possible to retain) , simply stretch out the course ! I don't know about you but I believe people that need our aid should have someone who came from a school that is meticulous about the info and it's quality. Quality over quantity! I don't need to finish in 5 weeks. I want to learn so I can be the best I can be for others, no matter how long it takes. I don't have 1,000 to spare to retake. I believe if you're ever to pay for a service you should get what you came for. Or have the opportunity to with what you've already paid. I was in the evening class this last session (Jan-Mar). It is a tough class and you have to read and study. The instructor Shaun and Skill Instructor Hillary were top notch. They made sure you worked hard, received practical advice and answered questions. Real life scenarios. Make sure you study and research and ask questions about topics you don't fully understand. It's about acquiring knowledge not just passing the exams. Do your signs and symptoms notebook. Study and KNOW everything on the study guides. Put your recreation on hold and commit to school (10 weeks for me) and you will do well. Stay on top of your paperwork. Turn it in on time. Great school! read more

Came to this business after being recommended by one of my fellow classmates and after considering the UCLA accelerated EMT course. & what a great decision! Course taken: Weekend - Sunday Course Instructor: Matt Length - Approximately 3 months 4 quizzes (20 questions), and 4 exams (100 questions) Final (150 questions) & skills test Which course should I take? I chose the weekend course over the weekday course to allow myself more time to study in between each block (4 blocks total). I would highly recommend this for anyone who needs more time to digest the lecture material and review. The weekday classes move very fast and there is less time to "slack off". If you are not a motivated learner, this is not the class for you. The weekend class can also be deadly because you tell yourself you have plenty of time to study. Be sure to review everyday! Is there a better instructor? Matt teaches the weekend courses and is an EMT. Shaun teaches the weekday and the evening courses and is a paramedic. Matt is very helpful in preparing you for the quizzes and exams by reviewing right before. He goes over tricky topics that may give you a hard time. Because he is an EMT and not a paramedic, you do not get the hands on learning experiences that Shaun offers his classes like being able to learn how to take blood glucose. Shaun is very hands on with his classes and helps them prepare for the "real world" while Matt helps you pass the tests.Shaun teaches his students how to strip IV bags, places 12 lead on dummies and he even has actors come in to portray real live emergencies for students to practice their skills. These are only a few of the experiences Shaun offers. The hands on skills I feel prepare the students far more for their ride-alongs. I felt like I was lost on my ride-alongs as far as practical knowledge. I had the book knowledge but not the application. If we had practiced placing 12-leads on dummies, I would have felt far more confident on my ride-alongs. These experiences are not offered in Matt's class. Matt also starts skills later. For someone like myself who needs consistent hands on practice to ingrain the skills, this would have been very helpful to start earlier. Matt is a new teacher so this may change as he learns from his experiences and gains more teaching experience under his belt. Shaun is a WONDERFUL instructor with many years of experience that makes his teaching style so valuable! He not only sets you up to pass the quizzes and exams, but you will be set to pass the national test and ready to enter the field! He truly cares about his students! He helped me gain more knowledge and prepare for my final by allowing me to sit in on his week day classes and practice skills with his students. His lecture style is very in depth and makes you feel prepared for your ride-alongs and most importantly the field. He won't make you feel like you have a lot of book knowledge but you don't know how to apply it. This is how I felt with Matt as my instructor. Shaun is HUGE on application! I cant express to you enough how great Shaun is at what he does! You will walk out with knowledge and application skills that will set you up for true success in the field. It is because of Shaun opening up his class to me and allowing me to come in everyday from 8am to 10pm to sit in on his lectures, ask questions, and practice skills that I felt beyond ready for the final and skills exam. Without that week, I would not have felt confident, especially on skills and I would definitely not have felt ready to take the national test. I cant thank him enough! How are the skills instructors? Many of the skills instructors took the course so they have a great insight on how the course works and can offer great advice on how to do well in the course. I want to highlight one skill instructor, in fact the lead skill instructor, who went above and beyond to help her students and myself! Hillary was very caring and very knowledgeable about her skills. Hillary came in multiple times on her days off, unpaid, in order to help myself and other students prepare for our skills final. She spent over 12 hours of her own time helping me. She is very professional and works so well with the students. She is a huge asset to the company! Without her and Shaun I would have been lost! Hillary opens up her schedule to meet the needs of the students any time of day. She genuinely wants to see her students succeed and treats everyone with the upmost respect. Her efforts and tips were a very large part of my success on skills day! She is an ANGEL sent to this company and such an inspiration! Only Complaint My only complaint is my certificate took over 5 days to post. This set me back on being able to take the national test as quickly as I would like. Do not waste your time at this school. I put my hard earning money into this school just for them to screw me over. Lectures consist of the instructor reading through powerpoint slides Monday-Tuesday from 8am-5pm. The book is your best friend you have to read about 11 chapters a week included with other assignments as well. There is a lot of self studying involved.These lectures did not help me at all Instead it made me dread logging online for lecture. When we were able to go to class we only had about 4 hours of hands on training a week! Hillary was the instructor for skills and she was great. Honestly I wish she was the one who taught the class, it's seemed as if she had more experience and actually cared about the students. As an EMT we should have all the hands on training we can get. This course was rushed and overwhelming. I went to go ask to get a refund and they said I would only be able to get $285 back out of the $1,225. If I'm going to pay this much money at least give me someone who has more experience as an instructor because I vividly remember Sam telling the class that she only has 1 year of experience as an instructor yet Matt replied to someone on yelp saying that she has three years of experience so who's lying? I didn't appear in class the last two days of the course, and the instructor never sent me an email regarding why I stopped going. This shows that they don't care about what the students do, why? because they only care about taking your money. A student sent an email to everyone in the class including myself saying that he was going to send emails to the company and let them know that we want our money back and everyone who agreed with him they were welcome to do it by sending an email to him saying that they support him, and after two days the company found out that we wanted to join him on complaining about the company and asking for our money back. The day that they find out, our instructor Sam said that everyone who agreed with the students will be drop from the class. This threat scared the students because they did not want to be dropped from the course. The company probably did this so students stayed quiet on how the program is being ran. The director is going to reply to my review and is gonna try make me look ignorant about everything that I am saying, I notice that he has done the same thing with other students that leave a yelp review speaking the truth of how west coast really is. read more

I was recently enrolled in the Sunday Weekend Course. My experience of this place was outstanding. This course is by no means easy. It is a very difficult course in general. If you have no prior experience with human anatomy, physiology, or medical terminology, it will be very difficult. But believe me when I say that you definitely get as much as you put in. If you TRULY study and try, you will pass this course. If you do not put in the time, you will not pass. Plain and Simple. I had the pleasure of having Matt as our Lead instructor. Many times he went out of his way to help me with concepts I did not understand. His style suited my learning. In addition to Matt, We had Shaun, (another instructor) come in a few times and assist with our learning as well. He was also outstanding. I believe he runs the full time day class. Outside of the lead instructors, we had Hillary come out and help almost every meeting. Hillary is one of the Lead Skills instructors and a previous student herself. She is very knowledgeable with the EMT book, and detailed when it comes to skills. You practice with her, and you will ACE your skills tests. I understand that every one is going to have their own opinion on the structure of the class. The class is a little bit pricey, and yes the materials can be costly as well, but this is EMT school. Many other EMT schools are similar and quiet honestly, not as flexible when it comes to time slots and schedules. If you are looking for a school that will fit in your schedule I would take a look here. I am a full time student, full time worker, and I was still able to complete this class on Sunday. If you do take this course at West Coast, I advise you on a few things that helped me significantly. - READ READ READ. If you do not read the book, you will not pass this class. - Do all the online practice tests. - Meet with fellow students and study together (I did it). - Ask instructors/skill instructors for help. I cannot tell you how many times we asked to come in and practice or study on our days off, and Matt, Shaun, Hillary and a few others, were willing to come in on their own time to HELP. Unfortunately, I cannot say that this is the best course I have taken. It is a fast paced course with lots of medical terminology and procedures crammed into 12 weeks. With lots of my money invested into the program, I can say that i walked away with, maybe, less than half of the actual knowledge I needed to start my career as an EMT. Couple things I noticed while in class are: you are a book worm and can absorb 10+ chapters, plus do all assignments, quizzes, and exams every 2 weeks or you have prior education in the medical field that can help you ask related questions to the course. Which I was neither, for I was coming into new field of study. While the instructor is well educated with their field of experience, majority of the chapters you read are self taught. 4 out of the 10 chapters, that they feel are important, are reviewed, while all other chapters are up to you to understand. Reading, studying and quizzes, on a daily bases, is roughly taking me 4+ hours daily to do. So, understand that all your time is trying to cram all the chapters in daily and have it memorized for all of your exams is very unlikely. Also, as there is much information to be reviewed, instructors do not have time to review everything in detail. My instructor is rushing through to read every slide, that he mispronounces words incorrectly or makes up some kind of detail to the sentence he didn't understand. Lastly, the skills days. As classes are pretty large in size, the class is usually divided into groups. Having 1 instructor to teach 50+ people is difficult, there were 2 other volunteers to help instruct the class. Later to find out, mistakes were made by the volunteers, and the instructor was trying to correct the mistakes. Much confusion was made amongst our peers, while the instructor makes this statement "Sorry. They are fired." All I'm trying to say is, if you can cram information and get 80% in the class to get a good career, go for it. I don't oppose individuals that can excel in this manner. But, if you need time to understand what you read or new to the medical field and need study time, Westcoast EMT isn't right for you. As I spent valuable time and money into this program, just to find out the hard way, that they are just taking my money without hesitation. At this point, I have to restart my career and find a better school that can fit my needs. read more

Recently took the evening course and passed the National Registry on my first attempt. As a full time student and having a full time job, there wasn't many options for me to achieve my goal of getting my EMT Cert until I discovered WCEMT. As for any EMT course you take, it is going to be difficult. You have to be willing to put in the time and effort in order to succeed. This is definitely a difficult course but with the help of the instructors I had, Brian and Davis, I was able to get all the help I needed to achieve my goal. I would highly recommend this course to anyone looking to get their EMT Certification. Keep in mind that your Certificate isn't going to just be given to you, you have to earn it. Shaun is one of those great teachers that speaks from experience, gives a lot and expects you will put in the work. I was in the Full - Time Program at West Coast EMT Riverside from February 11, 2019 to March 14, 2019. Prior to day one of class I had no background in the medical field at all. Apart from law enforcement training and application of a tourniquet and BLS Skills it was a foreign language. Fast forward 5 weeks - I graduated from the program and passed my NREMT on my first attempt. It takes a village. I could not have done that without the incredible team that works night and day to make sure each student is having their needs met and given every tool they need to be successful. At the end of the day it falls on the student as to whether they're successful or not - how much time they're willing to sacrifice - vulnerability to ask for help etc. However, Shaun Hughes, our Instructor created an environment in the classroom that was engaging, positive, and comfortable. When you are spending the majority of your day and time at a place, it is always nice when you truly WANT to be there. Granted, EMS was a foreign language to me starting out - I was so excited to come to class, apply myself, and learn. Diving deeper into the foundation at the West Coast EMT Riverside location: My Instructor, Shaun and Corey, the administrative assistant, saw the amount of hours I was spending studying, the extensive attention to detail in my notes, the drawings laying out the Pathophys of the body etc - the element that wasn't adding up to them was my scores. I'm concrete proof that there is such a thing as a "bad test taker". Without me approaching or asking them for help they had already been trying to find where the disconnect was, as far as the way I learn and the way I take tests. On my exams when I had a wrong answer it was never without the correct answer being presented as an eraser mark. Long story short - the disconnect between my hours studying and my test results was that my comprehension of a question read in my head to my comprehension hearing the question read out loud differed. When we figured this out they arranged for my exam questions to be read to me on test days by another instructor. They by no means had to do that for me, but they did and that says a tremendous amount about the environment you are in at school. I'll emphasize what I said in the beginning - I graduated with high marks from West Coast EMT and passed my NREMT on my first try. My NREMT test shut off at around 75-80 questions because my answers showed that I was competent and had in depth knowledge of pathophys and everything else we learned in class. Going from securing a scene so you can allow medical to come on - to walking up to a scene, gloving up, and taking initiative to address a medical emergency is extremely different. I had my ride outs with AMR and every situation I walked into I was confident in my ability to perform whatever was in my scope of practice more than adequately, as a student. Words truly do not do the Instructors justice. What I will say is that it was an absolute honor and privilege to be taught by them. read more

First thing I want to say is Sam is a fantastic instructor if you have her she will be there for you 100% of the time. For anyone taking Full Time please know that it is an ACCELERATED course so you will have no life for a month. No free time the free time you'll have is going to be on a date with your book. Read it read it read it. If you want to be successful read the book. This course has quite a bit of self study so be sure to actually do it or you won't see the final exam. Always read the chapter before class highlight, write down questions, and do not take this course lightly. Hillary will most likely be your skill instructor and you can't get better then her. Very kind and knows this is new for almost everyone and will teach you every step of the way. If you can handle It truly recommend taking the full time course. They provide insights using their anecdotal experiences and give the students a good grasp of the concepts being taught. One of the best parts about this course is the relationships you build with the other students. Bryan (the main instructor) creates an atmosphere of cooperation and togetherness and truly wants everyone to pass. I took this class summer '15 and it was awesome. Though it was a lot of readings, Bryan and Jeff made it easier to understand and were a hoot! It really made it fun to be there and they genuinely wanted to help us pass the course. People who complain on here weren't good students and don't have anyone to blame but themselves; even IF the instructors may have said something wrong by mistake, if you did any kind of reading from that giant book we buy, you'd know! My boyfriend and I always asked questions to be sure of miscommunication like that. As for a previous review I read that said people cheated and everyone in the back of the room did the best, is so not true. My entire group in the second row of the class did well and passed the course! So don't listen to those bitter reviews, they're just poor students with bad study tactics. Try everything you can with this course because if you really want it, you'll excel and the instructors are willing to work with you. Especially with learning your skills, everything is retained better if you work with your classmates and do everything hands on! This class was worth the long hours, money, and hot testing days (which was only because so many bodies were together in the classroom), but I know they've changed buildings and it looks 10 times better. I just finished the Evening Course yesterday and the experience I had with West Coast EMT was very positive. Our main instructor was Bryan but for the first 2 weeks he was in Honduras for a medical trip. Aside from him we had other instructors like Jeff, Richard, Jason, and Denise. Though normally I don't really like having multiple instructors in one course, I took exception in this course because they were not only able to teach us a lot, but their different personalities, experiences, and ways of teaching helped us to further understand what the world of EMS is really like. Bryan was awesome because he not only helped us understand the material we were learning but also he was very caring and helpful at all times. He really wanted all of us to pass and did what he could to help us. When the class didn't do well, he truly showed concern and really wanted to know what was going on so he could try to improve the way he teaches. To all the future students though, be warned that though this school does have a high NREMT pass rate, that does not mean this course is easy. We started with 42 students in this class but in the end, only 18 of us managed to complete the course. A lot of students were unable to reach the 80% mark required for the class and the final exam itself. I would honestly attribute this to the fact that a lot of the students in my class either worked, didn't listen to Bryan, or did not have much prior medical experience and were overwhelmed by the material . Listen to the advice Bryan gives and really devote your time into this class. Don't give up and take advantage of the time you have in the class. My experience here was very positive but there were a few negatives. A lot of the equipment was very old and worn out to the point that it wasn't a surprise if something didn't work and the building was definitely a bit run down and had many problems but Bryan did mention that he will be moving to a better building. Other than that, West Coast EMT was definitely worth the price and an experience I would never forget as I start my career as an EMT. read more

West Coast EMT - Practice like it's real under he table keep it real!!! - CPR Classes Near Me - Riverside, California

At first when I signed-up for the course, I was a little wary because I had planned on taking an EMT certification course at a local community college (it turns out they didn't offer one over the summer). So I came across West Coast during a Google search and found it to be the one that fit my schedule the best. I took the Weekend EMT-Certification Course with Brian as the (main) instructor. He was extremely helpful; his lectures were concise and to-the-point yet also engaging. He gives anecdotes occasionally and they really help in not only giving a grasp of what kinds of cases you might see in the field but also in helping remember some of the relelvant information/concepts. But at the end of the day, lectures cannot substitute reading. This is stressed throughout the course and cannot be emphasized enough. No lecture by any school can make-up for the information in the book. At the end of the day, it is up to YOU to decide whether you want to pass or fail the course. I ended up reading each chapter at least a few times to make sure I knew the information. It's very time consuming, but your effort will be worth it when time comes for you to take the certification exam. Due to the nature of a weekend course (Saturdays and Sundays from 8am~5pm... it's kind of tough), a few people dropped out and I don't think Brian will continue teaching this course (but I think he is still teaching the weekday full-time course). Also, Emma, the secretary (?) of the Riverside campus was extremely helpful and patient when it came to rescheduling my ride-alongs and such. Overall, everyone at West Coast was very helpful. I just took the certification exam today morning. After having passed the course, the test felt very easy; I was surprised because they cut me off around 60, 70 questions. And well, I checked my application status just right now, and I'm certified! I highly recommend West Coast EMT to anyone who plans on taking an EMT course. But remember that simply going to class won't cut it. You need to put the extra work in, not only to pass the class but also to pass the certification exam. P.S. Also I don't understand why anybody would complain about the place "looking like a dump and very unprofessional"? You're not paying for a 5-star hotel room. It's actually fairly clean. read more

I just finished the accelerated class on December 17th.. I loved it and I'm proud to say I passed the NREMT on the 21st! Bryan was fantastic and truly cared about all of us. You MUST do the reading and you MUST study. It was an accelerated course and was perfect for me but definitely isn't for someone who isn't going to take it seriously and do the reading and the work. Your life will be EMT for 5 weeks. You're in class from 8-5 and then studying after and on weekends. My book went everywhere with me. I purchased the book two weeks ahead of time and started reading it, they require chapters 1-4 to be read before the first day. I read a lot more than that and I'm glad I did. Thank you Bryan, Emma and everyone at west coast EMT for making my experience a great one. I left the class feeling confident and excited about my future. read more

This is a tough course, but a rewarding course. Sam was a great instructor, and helped us with every aspect of being an EMT along the way. Ernie and Hillary were very nice and helpful skills instructors as well. COVID restrictions, made this course have a little more self studying, but that never hurt anybody. I took this EMT class about a month ago. I was in the full time class and it was a lot of work. However, the teacher and aids that come in are very knowledgeable and can help you through any troubles you are having. The classes are very interactive and we take frequent short breaks so we don't burn out before class is over. The tests reflect what we go over in class, so take good notes and don't forget to read the book. if you have questions, just ask! Every question we had always had an answer. At the end of the class, there is a final and a skills test. The lectures in class fully prepared me for the final. There is also plenty of in class practice for the skills test. MOST IMPORTANTLY!!! This class 100% prepared me for the national EMT exam. All of my classmates that took the exam passed their first try as well. What more could you ask for? read more

This place is a joke!! They should not be in business! They are in it for the $ they do NOT care about the students or the pass rate. Don't waste your hard earned money, I recommend Crafton Hills college. The last 30 minutes of the so called "class" is doing the janitorial work. When you pay this kind of money for an accelerated class I think the WHOLE class experience should be geared toward a successful pass rate as opposed to cleaning their toilets!
