Extended wait, Deficient service, Billing-induced time dilation As suggested, I arrived at my appointment early (10 minutes early), and waited 1.5 hours for a 7-minute visit. The experience at this office was negative on many levels: patient deprioritization, insurance class prioritization, time devaluation, chatter overheard between patients and staff about insurance validity, and lack of care. My patient status was deprioritized. I confidently suspect that other patients were prioritized based on insurance classification. While waiting, I observed a returning patient being turned away and instructed to re-obtain a referral for proper billing. Although the same patient with the same insurance, their policy number changed. Every patient who arrived before me and many after me were seen. I should have been on payroll for the time I spent listening to others' insurance conversations while also watching people come and go. My visit was rushed, and the medical assessment lacked depth. There was no effort in service beyond what could be quickly charted and billed internally. Nothing discussed in the patient room was documented for my reference. The doctor's verbal referral to another practice was an unfamiliar name that I had to insist upon receiving in writing at the checkout counter. The doctor's price quote for an uninsured service was also given verbally, as if afraid to honor a written one in the future. They can keep the price quote -- I'll go somewhere else. read more

I had a infected cyst 2 weeks ago. Went to see dr john yost. It started 2 years ago as a bump on my lower back, went to him to check, he took 1 look in 10 seconds, told me not to worry about it, not cancerous. Now 2 weeks ago, it started to grow and extremely painful, went to him and this time he gave me some shots and told me I will be all better in a day or two. I asked him if I needed to come back and he told me no. Now 2 weeks later it doubled the size and looks like a little volcano. I called my family Dr again and he told me I still need to remove it and go see another surgeon to remove it. I went to Dr John yost twice in 2 years, both times he did not help my problem and explain it in depth, not a good Dr for me. read more

Went in for a cyst removal. Dr. Shiell and his assistant were both amazing. They made me feel very comfortable and Dr. Shiell made sure to make it painless. I couldn't be happier with the outcome. My cyst was about the size of a golf ball but Dr. Shiell removed itv with ease. When he removed the cyst he stitched me up nicely. Arrived for a surgery appointment with Dr. Shiell after waiting a month. Took off work for the appointment. Didn't bring my insurance card, but have seen the office multiple times over the past few months and my insurance hasn't changed. Was told I had to bring my insurance card and that I had to reschedule. Offered to bring my card after the visit and pay cash was still told I had to reschedule. Now I have to wait another 3.5 weeks for surgery because of "office policy." read more

Yet another fabulous visit to rave about! I used the online option to make an appointment for a check on a new spot on my face... made an appointment for 7:30am 1/24 in hopes that I'd be out at a decent time to not be too late for work. I pre-registered and upon arrival was asked to have a seat about 5 minutes later, I was called in. I was greeted by Rolando, who was super friendly (that early on a Friday) and asked a few questions and proceeded to let me know that it would be a few minutes. I was happy to see Dr. Bellamy, he is such a professional- with all the information to understand your situation, as friendly as ever and makes everything so quick, easy, and painless! I was out soon after, had my reason for visit taken care of + a two other questions looked at and taken care of while I was there. I left with a bandaid on my face but was as happy and satisfied as can be! No more annoying little spot on my face! Medical care is adequate, administration and billing is atrocious. Went in for a simple skin check, and was billed for two additional services never performed which is at best sloppy record keeping and at worst attempted insurance fraud. West twice refused to reverse charges, and threatened collections so I paid in full. West finally reversed charges once I got my insurance involved. Reimbursement for my overpayment has been a nightmare of unreturned calls, extensions and excuses. I've filed an overpayment dispute with my credit card. Bottom line, go somewhere (anywhere) else! read more

My visit was rushed. The PA had not read my chart and knew nothing about my medical history. I showed him my skin problems and he looked at them and rattled off prescriptions. There were complicated instructions and no one wrote them down for me, asked me to write them down, or give me a printed summary sheet. Did one appointment and walked out feeling like Dr.Rodger was just trying to hit his billable. Upon the second appointment I called letting them know I'd be late and was responded with a "drive safe".... Another turn of events (for the worse): I just received a call on this Friday afternoon at 2pm regarding my appointment coming Tuesday at 9am. Apparently my referral has now expired. According to the staff member that called me, it was also already expired about a month ago, when they had called me to reschedule me a month out. No one bothered to inform me of this at that time, or at any time until just now. As my GP only has a small practice, he is closed on Mondays so it is unlikely that this will be sorted out by the time of my appointment. As someone who needs to have skin checks for melanoma, as I have had it less than 5 years ago, this kind of neglectful follow up is just frustrating, disappointing and distressing. All the pressure now gets put back on me to sort this referral issue out, when they could have told me about this well over a month ago. I at this point DO NOT RECOMMEND coming to this dermatology office for actual medical issues because the office simply does not care enough to properly manage your file and follow up, as blatantly proven by my case. read more

I feel very lucky to have Dr. Shiell as my dermatologist. In 2017 he was recommended to me by my primary care doctor. To check out a dicey dark mole on my neck. We began annual appointments and now that I'm in my fifties, I see him twice a year for preventive skin checks. Dr. Sheill is a knowledgeable expert in the dermatology field. (Research his bio, it is amazing) With that, he is always in demand. Not just here in Palm Springs but elsewhere in California too. But over the years, I've learned that he is also a caring and diligent doctor. Dr. Sheill has taken the time to learn my personal health history. And for a person like me who can become very anxious in an examination room, he has been nothing but calm and professional. Getting things done expertly and confidently. And best of all, pain free! He is reliable, timely, and even answers all the questions I have written down before-hand on my list. It doesn't get any better than that really. Thank You Dr. Shiell and staff. I have a family history of melanoma as well as lot of moles in a wide variety of size and color, so Dr. Shiell did look me over thoroughly and removed a few of the moles that not just concerned him but ones that also concerned me, which was a nice change of pace from my experience with other offices. I feel pretty confident that Dr. Shiell is looking out for my best interest. The office runs efficiently. I haven't had to wait and they keep a digital record of documents. I didn't give full stars because they don't keep a photo record of my moles to help me keep track of changes. I'm told this is what they do for my brother who lives outside the country and had some minor changes to one of his moles that were caught as melanoma which was still contained and could be removed surgically. This quick action resulted in saving his life. read more

Until about 3 months ago I had a great experience with the Farrell location in Palm Springs so I am not sure what has happened. I have had 2 appointments which had to be cancelled at the last minute. One was due to a Doctor taking vacation and the second was when they ran out of the product I was scheduled to use. Problems do happen but two appointments in a row seems like a trend. I have been going there for years but will now be looking elsewhere. Very sad. read more

I called to make an appointment for IPL which I have done several times before. I asked simple questions--who would be performing the treatment, cost per session, type of laser used, etc. The receptionist said all of that would be determined when I made a consultation appointment (which is not free). Typically dermatologists or med spas will tell you a cost per session ($300 - $400) and be able to tell you more information about the service. It seems like they are just trying to book a bunch on consults to be able to charge for it. Felt like a scam. read more

I started going to Dr. Shiell when I first moved to the desert in my early sixties. I liked him immediately and continued to see him as my dermatologist. He's a suburb MOHS surgeon and also a friendly and good man. I wouldn't trade Dr. Shiell and/or his terrific staff for anything. BTW I am a natural redhead with freckles and lived in Hawaii over a 50 year period. My expectations for West Dermatology in Palm Springs were certainly higher than the treatment I received on my first and only visit. The receptionist and exit payment coordinator were unwelcoming, borderline rude, and cold. The interview nurse was excellent, friendly and generally interested in the reasons and concerns I expressed for the visit. Unfortunately the attending dermatologist showed little interest in my case from the start or the various reasons for the visit as recommended by my PCP. Rarely do I feel prejudice based on my medical history, private health insurance, or income as a retired professional. I highly do not recommend West Dermatology in Palm Springs! read more

I've seen many negative 1 star ratings. ANY time I go to West Derm. my wait time is 5 min or less. Once in exam room Roger Bellamy also sees me within 5-7 minutes. Fast and efficient service. 2nd visit since JAN 2018 for a shingles diagnosis and treatment. Today was a in person visit to have a lump looked at. Updated my records on line prior to appointment. Nice touch. Was given a fresh mask and within 5 minutes I was in the exam room. Explained the reason for my visit to the intake nurse. 5 minutes later the PA entered, did a cursory exam and gave me good news. FYI not sure who some of the people writing reviews are interacting with but in both my visits the staff was very helpful and I was in and out in under an hour. It's not hard to be nice to people. In today's CV19 environment, it's good to see a small practice go the extra mile for its patients. Affordable office visits for cash based customers. Absolutely. Terrible. The main MD is only there one day a week, so I got their Physician Assistant, which to say the least...was a complete and utter prick. He had zero bedside manner. Laughed at me because I was skeptical of his the Otezla program which he was pushing (and which I quickly found out he is a complete shill for, and obviously being paid by the Celgene Corporation for every signup -- as I overheard him 2 other times on my visit trying to push it on other patients). After persuading him to perform what was a routing shot procedure, that I have had several other professions do many times in my life, it became quickly obvious that he didn't even know what he was doing, and so I got up and left. He of course, acted like an asshole the whole time. If you are into: a) Getting treated like garbage. b) Having unprofessional amateurs perform procedures on you c) Like getting pushed drugs in a manner in line of a used car salesman ...then you may be into this place. I have been to West Dermatology twice, once with Dr. Shield and once with his PA Roger Bellamy. Their head-to-toe skin cancer check was one of the most sloppy and superficial checks I've every had. Also, in spite of their website, they did not offer any of the specialty services they claimed to offer and were barely able to perform anything other than very basic and generic dermatological services. Went in to have a melanotic macule on my lip removed with cryotherapy from the doctor as opposed to the NPs. I made the appointment two weeks to a month in advance. The results were terrific. The wait was a bit longer than expected (maybe 45 minutes to an hour), but I find it interesting to read magazines in the waiting area especially if they have a juicy selection of interesting reads or if I bring something along. Once I was put in a private room to wait for the doctor, the doctor came in within 5-10 minutes, introduced himself, and focused on understanding the history of the melanotic macule (freckle) on my lip. He offered two solutions for removal. I asked about the risks and complications with each solution and focused on whether there would be any scarring and he assured me that it wasn't an issue on lip tissue. He offered to freeze my freckle on the spot and after briefly consulting with my husband, we went for it. Pinching my lower lip where the freckle sat he sprayed it with liquid nitrogen for 10-30 seconds and that's it. It hurt just like a hard pinch or a quick burn would, and we were on our way out. The whole affair took less than 10 minutes. The doctor said it should heal within a week and we were on our way out. During the following week I experienced minor swelling. You could hardly notice the "cold sore" appearance of my lip until the 4-6th day after the procedure. It was then that I experienced a bit of soreness right as the old skin sloughed off. During the week after the procedure I made sure to keep my lips well protected with chapstick and use straws to prevent further irritation. On the 5th or 6th day after the procedure, the skin frozen off fell off, revealing fresh new skin without any blemishes. I was thrilled! I had the freckle for two years. The service was quick and the price of the service was most excellent! The doctor was courteous and knowledgeable and a fellow UCSD graduate. Overall, I highly recommend this dermatologist. One final note, some other Yelpers mention the lack of aesthetic appeal in the waiting room and office, and at first I must admit I was also skeptical myself but, you really get first rate service with the MD, who is apparently there only once a week. The savings on office furnishings are passed on to you which is very important if you are a cash patient like myself. I've visited dermatologists in fancier offices and honestly think that what you're after is a knowledgeable physician who understands your needs, who cares about the way the office looks? read more
