Brought my 6 year old Frenchie into Quioccasin Veterinary hospital for an acupuncture consult and we both absolutely fell in love with Dr. Garland. She had a veterinary student join us, which I also really loved. The environment is very calming and offers plenty of room to get comfortable. We sat on the floor while Dr. Garland went over some forms we filled out and really got to know my dog's personality and understand her medical issues. She was so very patient with my hyper dog and extremely knowledgeable and very good at relaying information to the lay person. So many good things to say. So many. SO MANY. The front desk receptionists know my pup by name and always greet us with a smile. We see Dr. Hillenbrand who is new to this location, but she is FANTASTIC. My pup was having some difficulty with diarrhea, giardia, and then got into some carpet to top things off. She called me 3 minutes after the practice opened to personally check on my pup. She answered any and all questions I had, offered an x-Ray to ease my mind about a blockage from the carpet, and called two more times during that week to check on us. She walks me through all of her findings while performing her exam on my pup, makes a plan for our next visit and what we can expect, and makes giving vaccines look like a piece of cake. She even mailed me a hand-written letter after our first appointment to thank us for choosing to see her and welcomed us to the practice. A hand-written letter, delivered via snail mail, in 2022. My heart! I called one day to have my pup's vaccination records emailed to me to provide to my landlord. I kid you not - 1 minute after talking with the receptionist on the phone I had a copy of her records. We had to submit a stool sample to check for remaining giardia, and had results in less than 12 hours. We live in Richmond but the 25 minute drive to this practice is so incredibly worth it. I wish I had done that first before taking my dog Joe there, where Dr Burke totally misdiagnosed him, and I spent a fortune for nothing. I fired her after three visits and insisted on seeing Dr. Mortimer, who I had seen before with another dog. Dr. Mortimer took an x-ray just as she did, and he advised me that Dr. Burke did not take the X-ray where it needed to be taken, and therefore, the tumor was missed. This doctor is lazy, unprofessional, callous, and heartless. I could go on and on about this, but it is so negative, and I'm so hurtful that I will only write this much. When it was time for us to send our 15-year old Zelda over The Rainbow Bridge, we didn't have much time to make arrangements and our vet was closed (a Saturday). After calling over a dozen clinics, and even though we have never been to this clinic before, Dr. Thoder compassionately agreed to fit us in and honestly it's the best experience I've had with a vet. Everyone we encountered treated us with the utmost kindness, care and concern. From the initial phone call, to bringing our girl in on a gurney (so she wouldn't have to try to walk) to making sure we understood the process every step of the way, Dr. Thoder made this very heartbreaking transition a very peaceful one. Our return visit to QVH with Itchy Dog was a most pleasant one. Since our previous vet is no longer with the practice, we are now seeing one of the practice owners. She was kind, patient and gentle with Itchy Dog, taking time to learn what treatments we had done in the past and everything else we had done to try to manage his chronic condition. When my dog wasn't getting better, Dr. Evans went out of her way to figure out what was going on-- calling other vets and neurologists to better get a grasp on what was going on. Dr. Mortimer is excellent. When I described my cat's symptoms and told other doctors what it seemed like to me, they based their treatment on what I said, and because I was wrong, the problem continued. And these were otherwise good doctors! Dr. Mortimer wanted to do a urinalysis. He did that, found the issue, gave him a shot of antibiotics, and the problem never came back. A++ The practice has a few new doctors and I haven't seen any of them, but if Dr. Mortimer brings them into his practice, they must be good. This was my first time EVER in a veterinary hospital as I've never had a pet before. We acquired an 8 week old kitten and needed to get the regular kitten check up. Making an appointment was quick and easy and we were warmly greeted for our appointment. I have never had such a pleasant and positive experience with a vet before! I've seen many vets throughout the years for different pets with different needs. After moving to Richmond and adopting a Great Dane puppy, we decided to try out QVH. Our puppy had developed a rash, so we scheduled an appointment. We called at the beginning of the week and they were able to schedule us for a Saturday morning appointment (ideal). The customer service there was impeccable - there were dog treats for pets and hershey kisses for owners in the waiting room. Talk about bedside manner! Dr. Jones treated us that day and she was great! We discussed concerns about neutering our pup - the city requires all puppies to be neutered by 4 m/o and will not provide licensing unless they are neutered. Dr. Jones supported our opinions and made a promise to reach out to the city to find out more about the policy. She emailed us on the following Tuesday, saying that she had spoken with the office and can write a letter supporting our decision to wait to neuter our dog once he is old enough to be vaccinated. The office called us the following day to see how our puppy's rash was. We chose to continue seeing Dr. Jones at QVH. We took our puppy for his final round of shots in April. Dr. Jones remembered us well, gave him a thorough check-up, and insisted that we bring him back for "weigh-ins" between vaccination schedules just so she can see how he is growing and progressing. The exam fee at QVH is ~$40 which is reasonable in my opinion. Like most vets, each visit adds up quickly, but for the service and confidence I have in QVH, it is worth the price. read more

I've been with another practice for years and mostly pleased with the treatment our dogs have received. However, twice in the last year, our pets have had medical emergencies and our vet couldn't see them. Within an hour of calling, Quioccasin was able to see both of them. Dr. Evans saw one of our dogs last summer and Dr. Mortimer, saw our other dog just this week. I was impressed with the cleanliness of the facility, the kindness and efficiency of the front desk staff and the kindness and attention both doctors gave my pets, who weren't even their regular clients. I've moved my pets to this practice because of how they took care of my dogs before they were even clients. I can't say enough good things about both of these visits. When you arrive on time for your appointment, do expect to wait 15-20 minutes in the reception area and then another 15-20 in the examination room for the vet to arrive. Don't expect a thorough examination for your $50 fee, but do expect your vet to just give the most cursory look over, not bothering to actually pull out an otoscope even when you ask her to or actually look closely at anything, such as the teeth---and no that'll require another visit, more fees, worm tests, on and on and on..... Do expect your vet to tell you how much your dog weighs, like you didn't know yourself. Do expect the actual exam to last around 7 minutes, but feels so much longer because you had to wait so long. Do expect to get the scare tactic so you vaccinate the hell out of your dog. And when you say, well my dog is indoors most of the time so no, I don't think this shot is necessary, do expect to the mood to sour because the vets disappointment at letting you leave for way under $200 is noticeably palpable. Do expect to be told that, "yes there are mosquitoes in the winter" and therefore your dog is at risk for worms, worms, worms even in winter when your dog is barely outdoors. Do expect to get marketing junk mail from your vet selling heart worm medicine. Do expect to get the scare tactic about heart worms every time you talk to your vet! And how your dog should be checked for heartworms, when in fact it's quite rare. Update I'm lowering my two star review to one because I was actually told that "commercial dog food is better" for my dog than a whole, natural diet of cooked and raw meat, cooked and raw veggies, rice and fruit. I was very worried recently about my dog Vixen because she was making odd noises. The veterinarian around the corner could not see her right away. I knew that an emergency room visit would be extremely costly. I then called Quioccasin Veterinary because I see their attractive center every day on the way to work. The ladies on staff there were so friendly and professional over the phone (and in person), and they were able to work Vixen right in to see Dr. Mortimer. I brought my other dog Kelsey in to see the Doctors there and also within a week and had both of my dogs updated on all of their shots. We are happy to have a new veterinarian! read more

I'd like to start with saying that this is an overall great veterinary hospital. The facility is always clean, the staff is very friendly, helpful, and the doctors are easy to talk to and seem to genuinely care. I've taken my dogs numerous times in the past year. The reason for my less than perfect rating comes from my most recent experience. I brought my dogs for a wellness exam, parvo booster, Rabies, and lepto booster. I estimated the cost would be approximately $310. Later that day the doctor called me and said that one of my dogs had an ear infection and he was going to do a cytology. He said another one should be done on his skin as well because of redness. It was recommended that my second dog have a skin cytology. He also suggested other types of tests, but luckily, I declined. Since I heard infection, I of course agreed to do the cytology. The results came back indicating that medication was necessary to remedy the problem. The additional recommended tests and medications came up to approximately $281. Bringing my unexpected total amount do to $567. It's not that I'm not interested in keeping my dogs healthy. It's that I was not informed of the cost for the additional services. I was not expecting to drop that much money. I might have delayed the additional testing a week or so when I could afford it. Next time I know that I must ask the cost of each individual recommendation from the doctor. I liken it to auto mechanics. When you drop your car off, they make a diagnosis and call you about what's wrong and the cost to fix it. I'm not upset or disgruntled. I will continue to take my dogs to this hospital. It's just an almost $600 vet bill is insane and unexpected for me. My suggestion, if anyone asked, would be to realize that the amount of additional services and medications being suggested may double the amount of the total bill. The customer needs to be able to make a feasible decision before the services are performed. I like the practice and the doctor I just hope my concern is viewed as a resolution to prevent this again. read more

I love the staff and the physicians here, and so do my three dogs - which makes all the difference. It is a very warm, welcoming, and comfortable environment. My youngest dog has bad anxiety and separation anxiety, but you would never know when we walks through the door. He finds 'his place' on the bench in the lobby and patiently waits for his favorite girls to come fetch him for his visit. I can't thank the staff enough for their expertise and hospitality. On Saturday October 20th, I took Sam, my 9 pound miniature toy poodle, to this location due to a severe ear infection. He was seen by Dr. Austin Wigley. Post examination, my dog was was given Prednisone. The problem? Dr. Wigley prescribed 3 times the dose needed for my tiny dog. The bottle says 1 1/2 pills 2x a day for 4 days and so on (tapered medication). On Monday I was just about out of pills so I called to let them know they miscounted the pills....only to find out the it should have been 1/2 a pill for 4 days!!!! Dr. Wigley looked at his notes, then the prescription bottle label and said, "Oh. I did make a mistake, it should only be 1/2 a pill. I'm sorry" My blood pressure went through the friggen roof! I gave him an earful and then hung up stating I would be there shortly. Before I even got out the door, he called me back to let me know the dose wasn't lethal for my dog and I didn't really need to be concerned!!!! He had "looked it up". Are you kidding me?!?! If that was a different kind of medication and he made that stupid, rookie mistake he may have been apologizing for killing my dog, not just overmedicating him!!!! I told him because of this HUGE error, I would not ever come back there, nor would I, naturally, recommend anyone to them! I took it this step further and decided to let everyone know who is willing to read this. Beware!! When I went in to pick up the medicine, the Director came out and apologized and that the "staff up front who were responsible has been spoken to". Lie! Because Dr. Wigley admitted responsibility, under what circumstances would the staff up front be responsible? She dispensed to me what HE wrote on the label. Don't sit there and think "everyone makes mistakes". Think....if this was your pet would you be a pissed off and not forgiving as I am? read more
