I've always passed by for years this place and finally decided to stop by two weeks ago and I will only come here in the future for bakeries in Livonia. It is small but has a good variety of baked goods. This is the only place that sells different types of baked breads with zucchini and such. The cannolis were great. This review is for their sub sandwich. The soft, white bread bun was fresh and otherwise unremarkable. The dominat flavor was American cheese. Not my favorite. Too few veggies, no peppers or option for peppers. The tomatoes were fresh enough, but nothing special for a June tomato. The cold cuts were just okay. No where near the standard of Gonella, Ventimiglia or Cantoro (nearby). Kind'a, sort'a tied w/Subway (nearby) ... but Subway has better bread and more (but lesser quality) protein and veggie options. Worst Bakery EVER!! I am a personal shopper that has a Family with 5 extended Families that love the egg bread from this bakery. I buy many loaves for all of them each week. This Bakery looked old as nasty before they closed down for a few week in 2024, so I was happy they were making improvements, WRONG!!. They reopened and I went in to get Braided Egg Bread which I would always buy, they hardly had any so I got what they had. I saw they had some goodies, cookies, pastries, Etc., in a glass case near register. The Cashier was ringing up a customer so I was looking at what I would want to try for myself thinking this place made improvements and looked a bit cleaner WRONG!!! I am looking at the goodies that have a ton of flies on them, no I am not exaggerating, at least 20 flies on everything. The back of the glass case is open, was nothing closing off the back where the lady at the register would reach in a grab baked goods. No way I am buying that fly egg laden baked goody. Gasped, paid for bread, and went on my way. Following week went in for Braided Egg Bread which I know they bake Tuesdays and Fridays because I buy the day it is baked fresh for my clients. It was Tuesday, No Braided Egg Bread, asked Cashier and she said no idea why their isn't any and that they will have it Friday. Come back Friday, no Braided Egg Bread, again lady at register knows nothing, she is just a body working the register totally clueless. This happens every Tuesday and Friday for weeks, even with calling to confirm they will have it and being told they will have it, no Braided Egg Bread. So at this point I am frustrated, My Clients are Frustrated!! I go again in person so I can ask the same older lady at the register if they are ever going to make it again. She says she doesn't know, she just works the register. So I ask if she can ask the baker if they will be making it, she ask what kind of bread?? Really, I just told her, is she senile? She said she would ask, I called Thursday to see if she asked and she didn't. She said she never sees the Baker because they work in the middle of the night. I said can you leave a note to ask him, she says I am just the cashier and the area where they bake is in the back of the building, so what, not like there is long lines at the register. I explain to her that I have clients, families that I shop for, and at this point this is my last time inquiring about the bread and I will inform my clients I am not wasting my time going out of my way to go to a Bakery that is run by idiots. Why don't they have a way to communicate to the owners, the bakers. Do they get paid? They must see someone at some point that is in charge. The Cashier tells me, "I understand your frustration." But she does absolutely nothing after 5 -6 weeks to get any answer for me about the Braided Egg Bread which is what my clients all want. So now I decided to go to Dakota Bakery in West Bloomfield, cost more, but they are consistent, have specials, and care about their Customers. Also The Art of Bread is very good. I will never ever step foot in West Fenkell again. Oh, and by the way, I also saw same cashier when I was there handling money with bare hands, then handling baked goods out of the glass case for a customer. This bakery after hours has no ability to even leave a message to ask a question. They really need to close it down. Make it so they just bake for the stores and quit screwing over in person customers. Sad thing is that one of my customers is nearly 90, just beat Cancer, and really wanted her favorite Bread, now I have to tell her I am no longer going to go to Fenkell's. read more

I am truly obsessed with this bakery! When I lived in Livonia, I saw them as an occasional treat. Now I live in Ferndale and I drive 20-30 mins just for their amazing baked goods. The staff at the store is beyond helpful with my dietary restrictions and making sure I can eat anything they recommend. Almost all of their bread is vegan and dairy-free, and all is clearly labeled so I can make non-dairy choices without them if need be! Today I got a delivery from a friend of mine who knows I broke my (driving) foot over the weekend and have been bummed being stuck in the house. She asked them about dairy free treats and I was amazed to learn they had carrot cake I could eat! Score! I am a little weary of shredded coconut...it's the texture for me.... but this cake is moist and soooo good! I would hardly know it was in there but it adds a nice flavor! The walnuts make it just right. I'm going to eat the whole thing before my husband can get home from work. My hubby stops there frequently enough that the bakers know him as the guy with the dairy free wife, and he raves about their pizza rolls! They will save some for you if you call ahead! Please don't buy them all or my husband will kill me for revealing his honey hole... So impressed with the staff and store there! I'm hoping more porch deliveries will come my way in the coming weeks! read more

Family ran and owned bakery with a great deal of options. I enjoy the apple bread that comes in a loaf with apples baked in. They do custom cakes, sell donuts, cookies and mini pastries. They also have pizza rolls and savory items also. They have early hours and did I mention fresh baked breads. I like the bakery items and the staff is consistently pleasant. read more

There are new owners that have kept the traditional recipes with the fresh bread and pizza rolls. I probably eat the pizza rolls twice a week for lunch. The new owners added the most scrumptious desserts to the bakery, including donuts! My favorites are pineapple upside down cake, cheesecake, and brownies with cream cheese. My traditional favorites are the u-bake pizza, eclairs and canolis. The owners are constantly putting out new desserts for you to try! During the COVID 19 crisis, the owners have been keeping everything very clean, they also have been working double or triple time and adjusting open hours to make sure everyone has fresh bread to take home. I just discovered West Fenkell Bakery, so I have not tried a lot of items - yet. But what I had was very tasty, and I will be back for more. I have not tried the breads, or most of the sweets yet. Although their pies looked great, and their umpkin roll is great. I was needing some meals, when I dropped in, so I bought their quiche pies ($4) - one was a cheddar and Broccoli, the other a quiche Loraine. I liked the quiche loraine, and loved the cheddar and broccoli. The other meal I got was a meat/potato pastie ($5). The pastie was very good. The dough was perfect, and the sliced potatoes and the ground beef/pork mixture, with brown gravy, was delicious. I also bought, but have not yet tried, their Lasgana ($7). Got a variety of items to try: pizza rolls, giant chocolate chip cookie with fudge and sprinkles, egg bread, mini fudge cheesecake, cannoli, and chocolate peanut butter cake slices. Pizza rolls are big and good. Cookie had tons of chocolate chips. Egg bread is so good and slightly sweet, used it for toast and French toast. Mini cheesecake was so-so, not creamy enough. Cannon is good. The chocolate peanut butter cake is amazing, it tastes like a Reese's peanut butter cup. I don't usually like frosting, but this was so good, light and full of peanut butter flavor. Everyone inside was friendly and helpful. All wearing masks and using gloves while serving/packaging. read more

Wow. This was something I didn't expect from West Fenkell Bakery. They've been around all my life and I've always considered them a Livonia staple business. However, if the customer service that I received tonight continues, I fear for their longevity in the business. 5:40p: On my way home from work. My wife calls and asks if I can pick up a loaf of bread to have with dinner. Having my choice of where to go, I thought of West Fenkell Bakery. 5:45p: I call West Fenkell Bakery. Here's the conversation. HER: West Fenkell Bakery. ME: Hi, what time do you close? HER: 6:00. ME: Great! Do you have any sliced Italian bread left. HER: No. ME: Okay.......Do you have any....not sliced? HER: No. ME: Hmmm....Do you have any rolls? HER: Yes. ME: GREAT! I'm at Evergreen and the Jeffries. I'll be there within 10 minutes. HER: K ME: Thanks. See you in a few. (click) 5:53p: I arrive at West Fenkell Bakery, lights out and no one in the front area. I could see a light from the back room. I pull the door handle, thinking it would be open and they were waiting for me. You know that warm feeling you get? A hometown baker, waiting for you just before closing time. Maybe even a bag of rolls by the cash register and the baker with a smile, ready to cash me out. Nope. Locked. Just then, a women exits from the kitchen outside entrance. Obviously a worker just off shift, heading home carrying 2 plastic bags of baked goods. ME: Pardon me? HER: Can I help you? ME: Yes. I called a few minutes ago .... I'd like some dinner rolls. HER: (blank stare) ME: You close at 6:00, right? HER: Yes. ME: It's not quite 6:00 yet. HER: Well, it's after 6:00 on the clock in the store. ME: (stunned silence) But it's 5 minutes til out here. HER: (blank stare) ME: I just called a few minutes ago. HER: I don't know what to tell you. ME: (recognizing her voice) Wait!! Did I talk to you? HER: Yes. ME: I called you 10 minutes ago and said I'd be here in 10 minutes, and I was here in 8. HER: (hangs her head in frustration and sighs) i can see if I can get back in. (she bangs on the door. Waits 5 seconds. No answer. She bangs once more. No answer) ME: (Frustrated) Ya know? No worries! HER: Are you SURE? ME: Are you KIDDING? ( I turn and proceed to my car) The woman leaves, bags in hand (which included sliced bread of all things). Still stunned and knowing someone was still in the building, I decided to call the store hoping to get a manager, owner, or someone to share my incredible experience with. Just as the phone rings, a young man peeks his head outside the door. He looks right, then left. He sees me in my car. Before I can open my car door, he ducks back into the store. I was only able to give a short beep of my car horn. I gave him a second to look out again but he didn't. Still on the phone, I get a voicemail password request. No answering machine, just a dead end. Now 6:04p, I've given this adventure way too much of my time and patience. I was tired, hungry and despondent. A great healthier choice in bread and can be found in many local food stores. Besides bread they also have many local foods like jams and treats. Though they do try to keep the ingredients healthy and to a minimum they do use hydrogenated oils in the process when they could make the choice not to. read more

My sister and I loved their cannolis so much that we went back for more. There weren't enough cannolis so we decided to try out a few of the chocolate eclairs. BIG MISTAKE. Pastry was dry, custard was not creamy and unflavorful. So disappointing. Would not return unless just for the cannolis. Staff was unfriendly too. Boo!!! read more

I am sooo frustrated!! I love the Italian Rolls! BUT ---- every time I but them they get moldy after 2 days.... yet the date on the sticker is usually 3 or more days out! Why do they keep getting moldy days before the out of date on the sticker!!!!!! Very very frustrated and upset!!! read more

I get my bread here every week. My favorite loaves are the Italian and Polish rye. When I have guests for dinner, I serve West Fenkell's bread or rolls. And don't forget the paczki on Shrove Tuesday! read more
