Came here to get my reel spooled since they're kind enough to do it for free IF they aren't busy with other customers whereas lots of their competitors (like Strike Zone spoil your rod up for freaking 12 cents/yard. Multiply that by your reels capacity. West Marine does a great job of it too. I've been in here a bunch of times and the staff is always very helpful and knowledgeable. But this time, I had Quinn help me out with spooling my rod. He's not like the other helpful employees.. He's above and beyond that. Very personable, helpful, fun to chat and swap fish "battle" stories with. Only dealt with him for about 5 minutes but he's an awesome dude and is a great addition to the fishing community. My reel looks fantastic btw! Quinn if you see this- thanks again man! TL;DR - these guys at West Marine skillfully spool up your line and rod for FREE if they aren't busy with other customers.. unlike their competitors, some of which charge 12 cents per yard- multiply that by a few hundred yards or whatever your rods capacity is.. they are incredibly helpful and knowledgeable as well. West Marine and I go way back, as I have been an avid watercraft junkie for most of my life. This location is conveniently located at Town Center and is a spacious store. I admittedly haven't needed anything for myself in years, however my kids have a boat and I popped into this store for Christmas gifts and a gift card. Naturally I had to walk around to see if anything caught my eye! You can't go into a store and not browse. The store is clean and has great displays featuring the latest and greatest for all of your watersports needs. I ran back to the boating section to pick up some outlets for the kids boat and grabbed a gift card so they could shop on their own. Checkout was a breeze and the young man efficient and friendly. It was late Monday and I needed a part desperately for my sailboat with the approaching Hurricane. After calling to confirm they had it. I stock I raced over and fortunately got there with 30 minutes to spare. Found the part with the help of the staff but when I got to the register I realized I had left my wallet on the boat. Jeff and 2 other team members worked with me tirelessly until well after closing hours to connect my phone to one of my online payment platforms. After several failed attempts we finally had success. Not an easy task for we non-millennials. The guys were unbelievably diligent and patient. Boat is secure and safe with power as we are now about to get hit. I live on the Westside of Jacksonville where Lorna (retired) store manager of Roosevelt WestMarine was great. These guys matched if not exceeded her standards. I get more frustrated with this store every time I come in here. Last visit we were asking for help with some electronics and when we asked about this one particular brand the sales associated quickly informed us he didn't like that brand and didn't know anything about it because he didn't like it. That's fine to have your preference and I appreciate that however if I ask about a product you carry you need to be knowledgeable about it and answer my questions. My other problem with them is we were in the store for about 45 min today and not a single sales person asked if we needed help which we did and when we went and found someone to help us they didn't know if they had the product. read more

What was supposed to be a quick trip into West Marine to check and see if they had a pair of Sperry Top Sider Boat Moccasins in my size turned into an unplanned shopping frenzy. I had just finished dinner at J. Alexander's at the St. John's Town Plaza in Jacksonville, and happened to spot the West Marine storefront as I was driving back out towards the highway. Knowing that they typically carry my favorite type of casual shoe, I decided to pop in for a look around. Sure enough they had the boat mocs, and also a large selection of Columbia and Quiksilver shirts, Hook & Tackle shorts, and foul weather rain jackets all on sale. Oh happy day! First time visiting this store. It was clean and had a lot of equipment but it is more advanced equipment not so much for first starters.

I am a gold star member here mainly because I have a 26 ft boat and also help others with their boats. I used to have a location near my house off university blvd. the employees there were very helpful and knew their store and where stuff was. They also had great product knowledge and if they didn't there was another one they would get that did. The employees in this store have no idea where anything is. They have no product knowledge. The prices here 100% full suggested retail. They have a great selection but they are over priced. If they could help you in any way with some knowledge you might not mind over paying. My suggestion is find what you need. Then order it on Amazon prime. If you need it right away they have you over a barrel. They have a monopoly with the exception of boat house marine which has a tiny selection. read more

Bait and Switch...and Poor Customer Service to balance it out. I went in to purchase a hand held marine band radio, a VHF antenna for my console mounted radio and to price a new gps/depth finder unit. I researched the items online and saw West Marine had 30% a VHF antenna with 15 feet of coax and a PL259 connector, so I went ready to buy. We couldn't get anyone to even talk to us about the electronics but we finally flagged down an associate that didn't walk fast enough to get away from us and asked where we would find the antenna and radio. He told us the antenna was in the back and went to get one. He opened the box for us and I noticed there was no connector. I asked him to make sure the connector was in the box and another guy, who wasn't involved in helping us, without turning toward us, said "it's not included". I told the guy I was talking with that it was included. It says so in the item description online. The other guy said again "it's not included" again, without turning toward us or offering any other assistance. So I stepped toward him, took out my phone, pulled up the item description to show him that it was included. He again said "it's not included". He refused to look at the online description and just kept insisting it wasn't included. I started to argue with him but decided it would be pointless so I walked to the front and asked the cashier for the manager. She called Patrick, the manager on duty, who was the same argumentative "it's not included" guy we had just walked away from. So I left without purchasing any of the items and I am no longer a West Marine customer. UPDATE: I found the exact same Shakespeare Antenna at Walmart (including the PL259 connector) for $15 less. read more

I only go to West Marine when I am desperate for boat accessories. I recently purchased a drain for my bait well. It was a PVC fitting. I have purchased them online for less than $9.00. Since I could not install the fitting by myself I had enlisted my neighbor to help so I bit the bullet. West Marine charged me $27 and change for the $7 fitting. I felt raped. Great customer service! I'm admittedly not a boater but I really enjoyed my brief visit. I received a Yeti rambler lowball as a Christmas gift and knew I would prefer the 20 ouncer instead. Armed only with the lowball in the original packaging and no receipt (as it was a gift) I held my breath hoping to have an easy exchange and just pay the $5 difference. Well, that's exactly what happened. Great customer service, very friendly staff and huge Yeti selection! I even signed up for the West Marine email club and don't even have a boat. read more
