This review is for my online purchase of the West Marine Coastal 200 7 x 50 binoculars. First - the website descriptions of their merchandise and the video describing the binoculars, are excellent. The binoculars are the best I've ever had by a longshot and I have five pairs ranging from handheld to high end. I don't know why some idiot posted a negative review online while all the rest were five stars. But I think he may be a competitor's plant because the look, feel, and lens image from the set I just got are incredible. I paid no shipping charge and was promised the binoculars in 5 to 7 days. They arrived in two days!! They are my Mercedes of binoculars!! I love them!!! Plus you are a local company -- in Santa Cruz -- awesome! read more

I bought a mens Grudens deepwater Fishing Jacket and wore it once in the rain and it did not hold up as far as keeping me dry- Three days after I bought it and wore it once, the lady manager of West Marine refused to give me a refund even though I had the receipt and tags. Customer service is not good here definitely don't recommend calling this place they just hang up on you.

A couple months ago I had gone in to buy a battery for my friend's camper. The one she had went kaput on us while we were in Santa Cruz camping. I couldn't be more pleased with the assistance we received. I wish I had gotten the gal's name. She worked in the back of the store. Post coming here in December 2019 was told I just happen to pick a time when the store was low on fishing tackle. Came back in march 2020 and found much of the same merchandise with dust now on it obviously not valued merchandise nor useful . Asked if by local fishing season (April) would the store be stocked. Was told yep! so i came back in twice and the same stuff was still hanging without much change. Saw one new rod reel combo and new frozen bait brand anchovies. Covid issues aside which i get, wrote down some stock #'s on the packages and the supplier let me know several had not stocked the listed product in years and would not be stocking more NICE!! Maybe in say 50 years if i am still alive and this store is still around can come in and buy the packages lures as antiques. Went to to tackle warehouse online a store that primarily sells gear for large mouth bass anglers and that circuit of professional tournament bass anglers in feshwater and found more usable salt water lures and merchandise than i had ever seen in W.Marine ever. W.Marine did have salmon and ling cod gear at high prices but stocked more trout gear than gear for the basic saltwater species like cod, striped bass, halibut, local saltwater kelp species, Sea bass, sand dab , ocean perch etc. No basics like zoom fluke plastics, basic classic striped bass lures like pencil poppers or other plugs. So I mention this to a clerk in the store and he says no no we got stuff for you. What do you need. I say surf lures and he directs me to Colt sniper Tuna lures for big class tuna and other big fish like wahoo and mahi mahi. Even gear for bill fish like marlin. I ask for a basic 3-4 inch swim bait in a white color any brand and get shown 12 inch ling cod plastics for really large lings. Gear that goes on a 6 ounce lead head and dropped in deep water. So i ask, This is gonna catch striped bass from the surf. Answer back yep get quite a few anglers in daily who use them and do really good. LOL!! So as the saying goes, "If you can't dazzle them with brilliance baffle them with complete Bull Sh@T. Rummaging through entire rows of merchandise found 1 Daiwa SP minnow in a grey color that was really for musky fishing and the paint was so old it was cracked. closer but not gonna work. Pretty obvious this store/company just does boat fishing gear and has stocked merchandise for rare species in the local water off Santa cruz vs even normal boat gear and shore based stuff not gonna find a whole lot here other than basic hooks and lead. Loads and loads of inshore, shore, and pier based fishing in this region but less gear than old mother Hubbard has in her shelves. missing out on loads of business but if a run of marlin, wahoo and mahi mahi explode on the Santa Cruz coast line know where to get fishing gear qucikly!!! read more

I placed an online order for antenna and mount for my boat. After receiving the order confirmation for both parts I subsequently received an email telling me the mount was on back order. I went to the local WM store and purchased the mount and went online and cancelled the back ordered mount. July 23rd, I received a confirmation email of the cancellation. Yesterday August 3, I noticed a new charge on my account for the same amount as the original mount I ordered. Today I called customer service and after making 3 separate calls, being transferred to 4 different people and 77 minutes of talk/onhold time, a supervisor told me she could not really explain what happened, but she could say it was a "glitch in the system". I no longer trust the West Marine online ordering system. read more

Walked into the almost-empty store on Saturday needing to purchase two higher-end rain coats. None of the 3 people at the register could show me where they were--just pointed. I went returned to the desk to ask for more help and they stood there and pointed again where the raincoats were. Needing more info for a rather expensive purchase, I left. As did the one other couple in the store. Please guys, we need to keep local businesses--this isn't the way to do it. read more

Today was the 2nd time going in to West Marine and the customer service was great! Employee Ebrima provided me and my boyfriend outstanding service. My boyfriend was purchasing items for his Boston Whaler and Ebrima knew his product and info about boats which was refreshing compared to the last time I went in and another employee assisted us. I am soo pleased with the customer service and knowledge of marine products and Monterey Bay Ocean Boating that I am taking the time to write this review. One lady stopped in the store all the way from Hawaii . She said you just can't find people over there that are willing to explain the product information like this place. The staff at West Marine is always sooo helpful, and after this last visit, I had to yelp about it. First, they always have the plastic replacement parts for large coolers, which have to be one of the worst designs ever and break constantly, Can someone with a brain design a cooler latch that doesn't break. But they are cheap and easy to replace WM has 'em. Second, HUGE selection of rope. My intern and I went to buy ropes for a human foosball game and they graciously let us us their rope cutter and end burner for a half hour. Burning rope smells horrible, but if saved us hours of work. Third, I went in to purchase some nautical code flags for a game at our family camp, and they were $100! Wow. So I had already ditched the game for something else in my head when one of the employees says "Wait, let me check on something," goes in the back, and finds a set labeled STORE USE that after checking with the manager, they loan to us for the summer! One other note - this store is always so clean and sparkly. read more

In an age when online shopping is easier and often cheaper than shopping at brick and mortar stores, you would think that retailers would be bending over backward to satisfy the needs of their customers. It pains me to say this but NOT SO with West Marine. On two separate occasions I purchased 'Star brite No Damp' dehumidifying crystals to prevent mold and mildew in my truck. The first batch glazed over with a hard crust preventing it from absorbing any moisture so I took it back. Unfortunately, I didn't have a receipt so they refused to replace or refund. Ok, my bad. I bought ANOTHER package and the same thing happened. This time I had my receipt but it had been 90 days since the purchase and again they refused to replace or refund. It took a while for the problem to occur but THE PRODUCT WAS DEFECTIVE! All they have to do is return it to the manufacturer and tell them that THEY have a problem. But instead, they push the problem on the customer. I WILL NEVER SHOP AT WEST MARINE AGAIN!! Hello Amazon...suck it, West Marine. read more

Even though this place is overpriced a bit it's well Worth coming to this location. An employee name "Roman" helped me each time time and his knowledge is unsurpassed! He helped me overhaul boat I bought with the correct items, both (electrical/mechanical). I hate to write this review because up until the outbreak of the corona virus I've had nothing but good things to say about the store. I understand with this epidemic going on it has mad things difficult for businesses to have face to face interactions with customers. I've been met with nothing but passive aggressiveness and absolutely help from a certain female manager at this location. The amount of money I've spent at this store is more than I'd like to admit but after I spend this $40 gift card I've received they will no longer have my business at this location. As a commercial fisherman in this town there's not many stores to choose from but I'd recommend everyone to take the time to drive anywhere but here because they are a corporation who doesn't care about the customer and only about themselves. I will be contacting corporate because this manager doesn't deserve to work in cutover service and if she stays with company freebies a role in a warehouse and no where near the floor. read more

OMG i had to go to the bathroom here. because staples bathroom was out of service. I have never shopped here. They were so nice about letting my five year old use the bathroom. Being in the service industry myself, I am always overwhelmed by the excellent service from the staff at West Marine. From my experience, most of the staff are avid boaters and well versed in marine systems and parts. They are always eager to help you find what you are looking for. The Santa Cruz store is small in my opinion and doesn't always have the parts I am looking for in stock, but nonetheless, the staff are excellent and well deserving of a 5 or 6 star rating. read more

A question; Why does the same 6 inch nylon cleat cost $2.19 at Orchard Supply and $7.99 at West Marine? Orchard Supply makes money on that cleat. This is the case with most comparable(same manufacturer) items found in other local hardware and supply stores. Inventory is usually low on individual items also. If you need two or four of something, good luck. The workers are nice and helpful. read more
