Entered as a walk in at 1:45 on a Saturday afternoon. Old style shop with great reviews so my expectations were high. I didn't feel welcome after getting passed over but I stayed; perhaps the guy was a regular. Unfortunately they DIDN'T HAVE TIME to do a haircut AND shave for me. The place was empty. I got the hint. DIDN'T HAVE TIME... I'm a 46 year old business owner myself and I've worked in the service industry since I was 16. I was begininng to look like Grizzly Adams. It was time. It's been about 3 years since I went to West Memorial Barber Shop to get a shave, not a haircut. You can say it was haircut, but I wanted it all off. I opened the door and I see the same barbers. The same chairs. The same cash register. When I used to get a regular haircut, this is the place I went. It would be a total of about 15 years that I have been going to this place. Everything was pretty much the same. Rick the barber had hair though. I could have just got some scissors and a razor and shaved my head, but I had to go back to the barber shop. Oh what a feeling. The warm foam on top of my head. Then the warm soaked towel on my head after the foam. This was to soften my hair for much easy shaving by the barber. A brushless cream was applied for the easy gliding by the razor. Rick used a straight razor, just like before. He took his time and was careful. After the first shave of my scalp, he applied coco butter. He then did a second shave, just to make sure every piece of hair was shaved. Witch hazel was applied next and then the aftershave. It was four layers of application later and two shaves until he finished. I do not like to get pampered, but this was an awesome feeling. I am glad this place hasn't changed over the years. The other guys in the place getting haircuts seemed retired. Heck, they've probably been coming to this place for over twenty years. I was getting ready to pay. I was told it would be $18. In my head, the only thought was "That's it? $18?" It was unbelievable. Four layers of stuff and 30 minutes later, and the total was $18. Rick was the person that used to give cut my hair. Nothing has changed except he has hair. Being bald scared some of his customers he said. While he was shaving my head, we talked about local sports and the other barber that used to be there. His brother and father cut hair there also, as well as his cousin. It looked like the place still didn't take credit cards -- no credit card machine. The same posters of guys sample haircuts were still hanging, but the plastic that covered it changed to a yellow color. There used to be a shoeshine guy there. His name was Calvin. He passed away. I remembered how many guys would bring there shoes to this place to get it shined. Guys, try this place if you ever want an old-fashioned haircut. Home of the half-assed haircut. This is the first time Yelp has seriously let me down. All the five start reviews led me to believe that this place was something special. Seeing a line out the door on a Saturday afternoon at this small place only reinforced that notion. I thought this was going to be worth a 12 mile drive to get here. Alas, the reason the line was so long was because one of the regular barbers was taking the day off, so they were running very short-handed. I noticed some folks were getting very good, professional haircuts....others were getting a perfunctory "snip...snip...done" job. In retrospect, it was probably their regulars getting the former, and newcomers like me getting the "bum's rush". 45 minutes later I got my 6 minute haircut. My haircut cost $19 and I always tip $5. I told the barber to take $5 out of the two twenty dollar bills I handed him, he gave me $6 in change. Took a while to make him understand I was not going to give him a $15 tip. So, how was my haircut? I got home from my haircut and the first thing my kids say is "Dad, what's wrong with your hair?" Looked in the bathroom mirror, and the back of my hair was lopsided...too long on the left, too short on the right. One of the worst haircuts I've had in my entire life. Please, do yourself a favor when you enter this place....count the number of barbers cutting hair. If there are less than three, run, do not walk, for the exit. read more

Leaving to get cash, returning and sitting for an hour I was THEN told it would be two hours before I could be seen unless I had made an appointment. Awful haircut. I was in the chair for about 10 minutes, facing away from the mirror. All customers were seated that way. I asked for a trim with a part on the left, #2 on the sides and just a little off the top. The guy shaved all the way up to my crown with the clippers with no taper, then randomly chopped the top to a variety of different lengths. No water was used to make the hair cooperate. He didn't give me a part and my hairstyle is now so misshapen as to make a part impossible. Then it was $19! What! No products, no conversation, bad haircut, didn't follow my directions, didn't use a razor, and charges $19? Never, ever go here unless you are already bald. read more

If you want to know how long of a wait, ask the barbers. They are family operated and extremely ethical having served the Westchester neighborhood for 30 years. This is the first time I've ever posted to Yelp. Hope you'll read it. I was in town on business Tuesday this week, had about an hour to kill and figured I'd get a haircut so... Google. This place was close - so I drop in. First impression was "cool, a REAL barbershop". Miguel was quick to seat me and this is where my 5 stars comes - Miguel was absolutely, far and away, the most professional, friendly and meticulous barber I've EVER had. ever. and I mean METICULOUS. AND in 36 years I've NEVER been happier with the result. It's Perfect - the highest paid stylist in the world couldn't have done better. Thank You Miguel! While getting my cut other customers were attended to by 2 other very gentlemanly barbers and you could tell these guys were true regulars here. Did I mention they have a professional shoe/boot shine in house too?? Did I mention they only take cash which I was caught without and they just let me walk out like no big. This barber shop is old school and Willie is the freaking head master! I came here for my first haircut after going to the same stylist for nearly 20 years. She did a great job but she was far away and the older I get, the less I like the salon experience. WMBS is near my house, so I thought I'd give it a try. It was awesome - like stepping back in time. The smell of talcum powder, the low hum of razors, shoeshine guy, no receptionist, no hair wash...and the cash resister looks like it's from 1965! It reminded me of getting my haircut as a little boy in Waynesburg, PA in the 60's at Joe's Barber Shop. After my cut, Willie asked if I wanted my "ears neat." I had no idea what he was talking about but I said "sure." It was amazing - he put hot shaving foam around my ears and shaved my sideburns with a straight razor! It felt incredible and looked very clean. Nice guys, only $19, which is unheard of for the service you get. This barber shop has been in business since 1975 and doesn't stay in business that long giving bad haircuts. From times to time the barber shop has to hire extra help to be able to service all customer that walk in the door but it is unfortunate that some customer have to get haircuts from the new hire and sometimes the barber has his own technique that doesn't work for the rest. There is a reason why the West Memorial Barber Shop has been in business for more than 35 years -- Willie and crew ALWAYS do the best job. Sometimes I get anxious and don't like to wait, but you have to expect a little bit of wait time when you want the best. If you think the pricing is too high, then see what paying $19 gets you elsewhere. Not many places use a straight razor anymore, and even fewer offer shaving. If I ever had an issue with a haircut or shave, then I would address right then and there. I wouldn't flex my internet muscles by writing a nasty review about them. If you don't like the service you received, then send them a message by not returning. Don't try to poison the well when it is not justified. read more
