Haven't really had great sush since I returned to Michigan, in 2016, from Chicago (I really miss…read moreMitch at Toro), but then we found it with Jeff at the Surfsider Sushi Bar at the Windjammer in Lexington. After 'Jammer re-modeled and re-opened it seems like the menu has been renovated and rejeuvenated as well as the dining area. At Sunday Brunch, we noticed some sushi rolls and we were thinking an extension of grocery store fare -- boy were we wrong. The seared bluefin is something I cannot have enough of. We made arrangements to sit a 16-course Omakase (Chef's Choice) and had such a great dinner that we made reservations for another on our way out. Anyone, well, most any trained chef, can cut up fish. Getting good, sushi quality fish and then having them made into combinations that blossom into delightful bites is not something that you can easily find. We were presented with three different pieces of mackeral and rated them on taste, saltiness, etc. They say a picture is worth many words, so see some of what we were eating (it's more difficult to take, & track, pictures while you are enjoying a meal -- and my intent was to enjoy the meal, so my apologies if I've mislabeled any of the pictures). Love the vibes, very casual, and the server was really friendly too. She was super enthusiastic when our group requested sake bombs. This was my first time going to an AYCE izakaya, and it made me wish there was one where I live. The highlight was definitely the beef teriyaki - comes out sizzling hot. The chicken teriyaki felt sad in comparison lol. Sushi was pretty good quality as well. Melona bars to top off the night! Would come back here always if I was in the area.

Let me state up front that the food is great. It's fresh and there's a good selection…read more My reason for giving 3 stars is the choice of seating and the service. We went as a group of 7 with a reservation. For some reason, instead of seating a larger group at the stand alone (but combinable tables) at the front of the restaurant, they decided to sit us at a booth that holds six with the +1 in a chair in the pathway to the bathroom. Ordering food is done on 2 pieces of paper - one for sushi and one for all the other food. Unlike many other AYCE restaurants, there is no description of the food and there's no iPad to see a photo of what you might be ordering. It makes it very difficult to select, and the waiters are really not around to ask questions. They wanted all 7 of us to use the single paper. I explained to the waiter that I wasn't at a restaurant to do math and add up all the pieces and orders and go person by person. Could we possibly get a second set of papers so we could split the table into 2 groups? Yes, but with great difficulty. The food started to come. Overall, very fast from paper to food. So, where did they put the food? Right in front of me as one if the people sitting at the end. They would place plate after plate in front of me. Often with no explanation of what food it was. Apparently, it is the person at the end of the table's job to announce the food and identify the person(s) who it belongs to. So, with the number of dishes ordered, there was little opportunity for me to eat. There was also no place for me to place my food on the table in front of me. It was beyond frustrating. Along the way, they began forgetting to deliver food that was ordered and they began delivering food we did not order. I believe the restaurant should have placed us at the tables at the front of the restaurant. All large groups would benefit front this and all would be able to enjoy the food.

Miso soup was good but a bit on the small side. We enjoyed the veggie gyoza as they were fried to a crisp. I ordered the avocado cucumber roll, Futo Maki roll, and yam tempura dragon roll. The BF ordered the tuna roll, salmon avocado, and French Kiss roll. We both noticed they were wrapped extremely loose and we had difficulty picking up each piece with chopsticks without them falling apart. Flavor-wise we found them all a bit bland, even the speciality rolls- which was really a shame because the cheapest roll was $9. Our total was $100 with tip which we found to be on the expensive side for the quantities received. Next time we're in town we'd try elsewhere or just not order sushi until we're back home.

We ordered 3 spicy rolls which came to the table the smallest rolls I have ever seen which were literally doused in spicy sauce. When I complained I was told "oh well that's how we make it and there's nothing we will do about it. The miso soup was luke warm and extremely salty. Even the beef udon soup was flavourless. The only thing which was good was the edamame. The restaurant itself had no ambiance or warmth.
