I'm sorry - but the A/C needs to work by cooling down the whole place. It's summer in Texas. Having to stand in front of fans and vents to cool off is not ideal. People were nice but will save any future trips here for the winter. Also, the mix of music wasn't diverse enough on adult night. Booked for a party and did not have a good time! The young employees need better training with customer service and explaining the party details! This place is small and if you book a party just know it's very limited space and the host is very unpleasant and rude! You get one hour at a table and when I got there I had to wait to get my tables and then when I guess my hour was up they rushed to get be out of there but told me 25 mins till 5? So I did not get my full hour also the food and drinks came out late and I had to keep reminding them the missing items overall just spend you money else where this place needs serious improvements and not to rush their guest! Will not be coming back here read all reviews before you make a decision to book this place for parties or private events! Westlake Skate Center is like that one family owned restaurant you remember from your childhood that's still open. Time has gone on, you and everything else around you has grown and matured, but Westlake is still the same. Some skate purists will appreciate that, while most others would not. I really enjoy coming here, but I can see why most people would stay away from this place. 1) the place is in dire need of a deep clean and renovation. The carpeted walls and seats feel so dirty, the lockers look nasty, and the overall esthetics gives off that "cooties" vibe; 2) A lot of the rental skates are old. If you plan on coming on a Friday or Saturday night, get there early or you might get stuck with the older slates that aren't too great. 3) You aren't going to be treated like you're at the Ritz. Sometimes the workers are nice, but that can easily change once it gets busy or if you become that annoying customer. 4) Like at most skating rinks, there are unsupervised kids falling every where, skating the wrong way, and simply getting in the way. 5) Masks are not enforced and most staff do not wear them. With that all being, I love going to this rink. It has its flaws, but 1) there's a great community of regulars who come and/or work there. 2) It's a family friendly environment (though, song choices are questionable). There are usually fun games for the kids that do not take up too much time. 3) The music is pretty diverse, though it pays homage to the weird skate/techno genre (most people like it, I don't). 4) The culture amongst the regulars is pretty welcoming and inclusive. People are more than willing to help or share different skating tips. I would recommend this rink to novice/intermediate skaters who do not mind kids just want a low-key place to skate. For those of you who skate once in a blue moon and do not own a pair of skates, I'd maybe consider somewhere else. read more

We booked a birthday party for my nine year old grandson and paid over $300 for the worst service ever. The party was for kids and the DJ was super rude. They only had one working skate buddy for kids so some of the kids who could not skate very well were using the wall to aide them and he yelled at them when they were using the wall. When my nine year old grandson went to request his song (which cones with the birthday package) the DJ told him did you read the sign I am not taking request. Sorry if he did not want to be at work but that was part of the package. This place is old and outdated and the service was not good. Westlake reminds me of a skating party I attended for an elementary school "graduation" - it wouldn't even surprise me if the generously broken-in skates I recently strapped on were the same ones they used 2 decades ago. I couldn't help but wonder how many thousands of people have fallen down on that old hardwood floor .... For those who can't skate or who have forgotten how to stop there are plenty of felt-covered rails and walls for you to run into, but you still have to step UP to exit the skating area so hold on to something. Also, whatever music they have playing it is going to be good and loud, and if you find yourself skating on the outside of the track you'll be within a couple inches of the speakers. And yes it is hip hop and rap unless you request specific music for a party, but some of it is 80s. I predict a UYE in 2010 .... read more

My PREVIOUS experience at Westlake Skate Center had been great, my family and friends had been going over the last couple of years. But recently, I am not sure if management or owners have changed by my MOST RECENT experience was HORRIBLE! They allowed children, pre-teens to be dropped off by parents, with no supervision, who then proceeded to run around the facility, used foul language and misbehaved the entire time. Additionally the music was absolutely innappropiate! I've heard better music at adult nightclubs than this place! It was constant back to back explicit and sexual songs, with NO EDITING, NO BLEEPING! We asked the manager and DJ to please change the song selection to be more appropiate for our family and the other unsupervised children there they did consent but after 30 minutes the music seemed to get worse not better! We will NOT be returning to this business! read more

Looking for a new place to skate after the loss of the rink in Plano, I decided to check out this rink based on a recommendation seen in an online review. I am pleasantly surprised! It's got a decent and fast floor, not too small. Friendly crowd who all seem to know each other, and the DJ's seem to know the skaters. Music keeps moving and has a good solid beat, and while hip hop seems well-represented, it's not all the boring, lifeless variety. Clean, old building like most rinks. This place has a good, friendly, fun feel to it. I won't mind driving twice as far to come here. They play an interesting game called The Paper Game here... like musical chairs. I haven't seen it before. Not that I ever participate in skating rink games, but I am always interested to see the unique things that some rinks do. There are black lights over the floor, so that provides some interesting visual effects at times. A decent number of people were there so it wasn't too empty. There is nothing worse than a rink with 10 people on a Saturday night! Not only is it boring skating around an empty floor, but it makes you wonder what other event you must be missing out on that keeps the rinks empty! The far walls of the rink opposite the entry side have benches set into the walls where you can sit right on the edge of the floor. That's an interesting feature I haven't seen anywhere else. I didn't check out the snack bar, but it's the usual ancient bowling alley sort of snack bar, like in most skating rinks. Another thing I look for is water fountains. They had two... one for adults, and one really low one for kids. They both put out warm water, despite the constant running of the refrigeration, so they may need a little work. This place helps take the edge off the Plano loss. Again, I won't mind driving a bit longer to take in the pleasant atmosphere of this rink. read more

One of the worst experiences I've had in a long time. Attended a private party in which the birthday girl payed for 2 hours of private use. We were kicked out after 30 minutes with no refund offered because we brought in food and drink. The owner continued to berate us and use fowl language making us feel unsafe. I've never been so appalled by a grown woman's behavior, yet alone a "business" owner. Save your money and skate elsewhere, there are plenty of places to skate where the owner won't yell at and insult paying customers. read more

So since White Rock Skate was booked on my birthday I had to find another skating rink to do my 80s jamskate birthday party. This is where Westlake Skate Center comes in. I called about 2 months ago to try and reserve the rink for my birthday party. This nice older lady answered the phone and told me that YES I could have the rink from 5 to 7pm on my birthday, no problem. It was $250 to reserve it and included all skate rentals for up to 60 of my peeps. I also was allowed to bring cokes and cake and make my own burned CDs for the festivities (or make a song list for the DJ). Pefect!! All I had to do was pay my $50 deposit. I went out to the rink before the party to pay up and check the place out. This place is well hidden in the middle of nowhere which is the only negative I had about it. But inside it had a huge skating floor - it seemed bigger than White Rock actually. The place was appropriately retro, right down to the musty smell, the aging snack bar area, the old school 4 wheel skates, and the decor. There was a disco ball in the middle of the room as all good rinks should have and a variety of flashy lights. Plus they had air hockey, video games, and the cranes where you can try and win stuffed animals. On the right hand side of the rink there were benches built in where you could sit...and I guess in the dark back corner you could make out with your BF if you wanted. I tried this to see if anyone noticed and they didn't sooooo kiddos you know where to go and try to get to first base! haha I showed up a little before my party was to start and handed over my CDs to the DJ kid. Then I got my skates and started rolling. As people showed up they would get their skates and join in the fun. It brought back memories of the skating trips my mom would take me on for my birthday back in the day. The DJ guy was also helpful with asking me when and if I wanted to do games, birthday cake, etc. We had races which resulted in some awesome ass busting by the BF and the hokey pokey where I was very lucky not to bust my ass. I was shocked with how good some of my friends were on their skates - showoffs!! I'll stick with going forward and coasting around the turns thank you very much. Overall the people working there were super nice and helpful from the older owners all the way down to the teenage kids and it was one of the best times I've had in a while. This place is absolutely disgusting. There is an awful smell as soon as you open the door, and the 'carpet' which covers the floor and walls has been worn thin all the way through to the foundation. The rink also has lots of scratches and dents in the floor. I wouldn't even dream of purchasing food from a place like this, and even the few 'claw machine' type games they have are almost completely empty except for expired candy and dirty old dollar store toys. Unfortunately it is one of the only remaining roller rinks in town, and at least it is only a few dollars each, but please don't ruin your child's birthday by spending it here. read more

So if Dad's Broadway is a little country and White Rock Skate is a little top 40s then Westlake Skate is downright gangsta hip hop/rap. That's right. Just like choosing a club for its music, if you've got a little thang for jam skating to gangsta hip hop this is the joint. Like all skating rinks in Dallas, Westlake isn't in the most desireable neighborhood and is identified by a solitary sign that says "Skate." While I was waiting to pay my admission fee, I could hear the bass pumping out some serious hip hop and rap. The clientele is a little different too. Still the same middle schoolers, but some serious hip hop afficianados. This place was jam packed on a Saturday night. The skating rink is a little larger than White Rock and it even has black lights, which makes it the perfect venue for a white party uye jamskate. Music is 100% hip hop/rap all the time so you'd better be a fan; otherwise, there's gonna be a riot if you ask the DJ to put on some Dixie Chicks at this joint. The owners are super friendly and the location isn't as great as White Rock, but it sure beats heading to Mesquite. read more

I love roller skating!! Anyone remember that roller skating show at Sea World way back in the day with roller princess Helen Wheels?? And the Huey Lewis soundtrack and the motorcycles in the sphere cage of death???? Yeah, that was pretty much my favorite thing ever. Anyway, I wish there were a more convenient place to skate here in Dallas, but Westlake worked out really well for Nickie G's bday bash. I think it was definitely the way to go renting it out--we got there a little late and were thinking maybe we'd try and stay longer after the rental time was up but when we saw all the noisy brats ready to pile in we quickly changed our minds, haha. The rink was huge, it was just like the place I used to go back in my hometown so I was in heaven. My skating skills aren't quite what they used to be but I got quite a workout!!! My main complaint though was they really should stop using some of the skates at some point. The rubber stopper brakes on mine were worn down to the point that they were no longer usable, and the right skate ended up giving me a bruise that I'm still suffering from over a week later!!! So minus one star for the uncomfy skates but other than that I had a blast! read more

I went to this place last night for New Year's Eve. They bumped the price up from $3 to $15 because they assumed we were staying to 2:30 but we only stayed until 9. Mask were NOT enforced, the people in the front office wore no mask, even the older lady who greeted us wore no mask.,, but had "mask required" on the window by entrance. They had quick games but during the games they made me and a family member stand by people who were not wearing a mask at all and took our health into no consideration. Grandma decided to take the grandkids out skating. We didn't know of a rink nearby so checked yelp. We drove an hour and was expecting $10 per kid with admission and skates. Surprisingly it was less. First impression inside was icky. Stains splattered on carpeted walls and a bad stinch worse then middle school B.O. But upon going in the rink the odor and carpet wasn't so offensive. What kept running in the back of my mind was how dark the rink and carpeted walls were. We all had a good time. Unfortunately days later my child and I came down sick with very bad respiratory infections. Might be a coincidence, but I don't think a trip back is worth getting sick again. read more

About 14 of us rented this venue for an afternoon to celebrate a friends birthday. Within 30 min the owner walks in, sees our 70s themed outfits, hears us laughing, doesn't even ask if we are drinking and calls staff (who defended us) to see if we had brought in alcohol - which we hadn't. We were reassured food and drink was acceptable since it was an after hours event. There was no contract so we didn't know alcohol wasn't allowed. When the staff told us the no alcohol policy, we removed it immediately. This happened within five minutes of us entering the place of "business." We were not intoxicated because we were anticipating drinking at the party. The owner was rude and aggressive to both the birthday girl and the partygoers. I am shocked a business owner would talk to their customers this way; the peopleU of garland should be disappointed she represents a business owner in the community. I will go out of my way to make sure none of my friends ever come here. The Garland Texas Better Business Bureau will be hearing from us not only because of the manner the owner of the establishment spoke to us, but also because of how she treated us in a wholly unprofessional manner. read more

The owner is extremely rude and accused us of having alcohol in the rink when we did not. We even told her to smell all of our beverages to prove it, which she would not do. After many years, I've started skating again to introduce the fun to my grand kids. Here are the issues I've found in my short time there. -The skates are old and busted up -there's a large lip to enter/exit the skating floor -the carpeting is super old and EXTREMELY smelly. -the lighting is kept dim throughout (my guess is to hide state of disrepair) -rough patch on skate floor (lighting is so low you can't see it) -The music selection leaves a lot to be desired. I've been to another skating rink in Garland and decided to give this a try. Its been awhile since I've been this disgusted. Even the kids were not feeling it and wanted to leave immediately. After about an hour, i couldn't take it anymore and just ate the +$30 for fours skaters and went elsewhere. read more

My 8 year old enjoyed herself at the skating center. Mrs. Melba helped me decorate the tables and Scott played good music that we can skate to.. They was very helpful and kind. This place has a big skating rink but there needs to be a whole change in management. The rink needs to have certain time sections for different age groups because of safety issues and the older woman in the front is very rude and uncommunicative. It is retro and dated, but part of the charm, Things must have improved, the staff was great, no smell and a/c was working well. Wonderful for an inexpensive family night. Truly 1960's very old inside. Probably haven't had an upgrade of any kind since it opened. Bathroom reminds you of an old rural truck stop. They have a sign up over the bar area that says "We Do Not Carry Insurance". The skates are very old and worn and probably haven't had any new skates in at least 5-10 years. It's very very dirty and I say again this place is very dated. The sound system is AWFUL you can't understand what song is being played because the system is so bad. Very old dirty carpet that I haven't seen since the days of the flower fabric sofas. Missing trimming around the walls. This could actually be a possibly a nice place but some Major upgrades need to be done. The parking lot lacks lighting to give you a sense of security when parking your vehicle. It was no sanitation process for the shoes I never saw anyone spray the shoes with any kind of disinfectant when the skaters returned their shoes a knot the front desk.
