I had previously used this location under former ownership, and he was fine, a somewhat older man who was a terrific bowler but not the best with customer service. I recently paid a visit and met Jonathan, who, while young, really knows his stuff. I recently purchased a UFO Alert from him, and he drilled it according to my specifications. I also brought him a Phaze 4 that I had purchased elsewhere, and despite the fact that I had only purchased one from him, he was fantastic about drilling both balls with the same care. I've taken bowling balls to other shops to drill, and some of them become irritated when you bring a ball to them that you bought elsewhere rather than giving them the business. Well, I've told my bowling teammates about Jonathan, and I'm hoping they'll come see this location. Jonathan is fantastic with customers and is always willing to answer my questions, even if they seem silly to most pro-shop owners. Everyone may be fooled by all the 5 star reviews, and go "man, this guy is paying everyone to write reviews for him because it's Yelp, and that is what people on Yelp do", but Butch and Westminster Bowling Supply are the real deal. The guy didn't even have a Yelp to begin with, so it boggles my mind how he even got business! I've gone to 2 other pro shops already. One was at the lane I bowl at. He was interested in getting me a ball, but really didn't come off confident in what would work for me. He also didn't get my fitting correct which I eventually found out coming to Butch. The second pro shop I went to was at another lane. Highly recommended. A bit too busy though & lacking that one on one touch you want to personalize the ball to your hand and style. So here I was at Westminster Bowling Supply. Outside Westminster Lanes, the shop is located next to a liquor store and a tool repair shop. Odd, I know, but walk inside, and you'll see a handful of balls to select from & shoes to get. They don't call him the ball doctor for nothing, and once I started talking to Butch I knew he was knowledgeable & a stand up guy. He took the time to answer all my questions. I told him my dislikes and likes of what current ball I had. Within 20-30 minutes I decided to go one up on a level on my ball and get it drilled by him. This process is what tips the rating over. I haven't been to a shop where they drill the thumb slug to match your thumb. I have a very flat thumb, and that was one of my problems. Majority of the other pro shops use pre-selected thumb slugs. I found this to be unique and wondered why others don't do it, because not everyone's hand is the same. Another item was that he noticed just looking at my old ball, feeling out my span, how my ring finger may be hitting the backside when my fingers are in. I really never noticed it, but he had this contraption that he can dial in to have you fit. I put my hands in, didn't realize anything, but after using my original ball, I did see what he was talking about. Further examination, we saw that my fingertips were being filled into a slug that was a bit tighter then it should be. After getting all the measurements he needed, I left knowing things would be in good hands, and came back the next day to pick up the ball. He drilled the thumb slug with me to personalize the fit. I've still yet to test the ball on a lane, but throwing it in the shop felt much better. At the end of it all, once I have thrown the ball a few times I know Butch will be there to guide me. Be it if the ball is going too long and we need to sand it down to react a bit earlier, or small changes like opening up the holes a bit for swelling. If you need a bowling ball, you guys got to check this place out and have Butch do his amazing work. read more

Would give a half star if I could. This place is way overpriced and no customer service or help at all. Jon and the other workers do not make you feel comfortable and are extremely rude. To start it says they open at 11 yet twice when I've showed up at 11:45-noonish, the door is locked and the little man cleaning bowling balls waves you away like "shoo-fly!" kind of wave... so I drove away only to call when I got around the corner to see if maybe someone would answer, and give me an answer as to why they're not open during advertised business. They answered and very rudely just "yeah sure were open" so I turn around and come back in as I'm looking for a new ball (what's supposed to be an exciting experience). When I got back in I was made feel extremely uncomfortable and when asking ball price Jon says well idk go check the price on the wall. Then I ask about drilling and inserts and he raised the price on me since the day before quoting $30 for inserts instead of $20 like he had told me the day before. Like do you not know your own prices or own hours when to unlock your door? It's your shop Jon!! Learn some customer service or you'll very soon be out of business. Way overpriced for anything in this shop!!! Go to fountain bowl or any other pro shop or even amazon! Way better pricing. Got the same ball off amazon for a fraction of the price, and got it drilled with inserts for less than his price of just plain ball and drilling. He wanted $190 for a black hammer drilled w inserts. Got the same ball on amazon for $84 and went to fountain bowl for drilling and inserts ($45). So overall got me ball I wanted for over $30 cheaper with drilling and inserts. Fountain bowl and any pro shop in the alleys charge $40 for drilling and inserts. This is a good shop to look at what you want in person, then leave to save $100's and go buy what you need at amazon, fountain, Linbrook, etc. Do not come to this guy unless you want to be gauged on price and talked back too honestly. Again, getting a bowling ball or any bowling equipment is supposed to be fun and light hearted, and you should not be made felt the way my uncle and I were in there. First, I waited around 30 min because they opened late. Then they opened the door for me and didnt say anything for 5 min till i asked for some service. During during that awkward silence both employees stared at me. I looked at their balls, the prices were about $100 more than online with free shipping. I am a very casual bowler mind you. I dont really need a bowling ball. I've owned a few in the past. I had a couple types of balls in mind but wasnt sure. Younger white lady stood behind counter with no words. Old black gentleman made two quick sarcastic comments about how they dont sell bowling balls or help people. I fake laughed, then he sat there in awkward silence as literally his two sarcastic comments sank in as reality. I asked if he could give me a recommendation, i am not an avid bowler, but i need a new ball and a ball drilled for me. I know a little about what I want, I have had a couple balls in the past. Our conversation was only a few sentences long, but I was told to leave and go home learn more about bowling and come back knowing which exact ball I want. Maybe that's how all bowling places are? I can accept being elitest or condescending. I kind of want an elitest, know-it-all to take me through buying a new ball. I was looking for a pro bowling shop to assess 2 balls that I was given from a family friend. Hoping to find out if they were worth reinvesting and using them at the alley. I discovered this store on yelp and google which gave this store some mixed reviews. It was also the most reviewed in all of Orange County. So I took my chances and I had a pretty good experience and left happy and got more than I wanted. So I walked into a clean and well kept store with bowling balls, bags and shoes nicely displayed. I saw an older man eating fried rice, and he seemed to be working during his break. I said Hello and he greeted me with a enthusiastic hello back. I told him why I came in here and hoped he could help. While I pulled out the balls to show him my balls, he quickly finished his lunch. I felt bad... 2.5 hours later.... I got the 2 balls assessed and one of them, Butch recommend we could salvage and the other is absolutely done with. I was happy but he recommended that I should bowl with a heavier ball. A 15lber, not 12lb ball that I brought in. So we talked about bowling styles and endurance I decided to buy a heavier ball that he recommended and got sized up for a perfect fitting. He used a fitting device that looked like some kind of torturing tool but it was so cool and I got a really great fit where I can put the ball to my side with out any strain on my hand, thumb and fingers. So dope! I love to bowl, one of my favorite hobbies because everyone is down for a game and my girl is super into it. I just shopped here yesterday and Butch was extremely knowledgeable, helpful, and more importantly professional without being like your typical pushy sales person. I'm relatively new to bowing and he gave me a good number of tips based on how I was describing my ball's roll, etc. Instead of pushing me to buy a new ball he encouraged me to try out his tips and take a lesson to better understand how I bowl and so forth. It's nice to work with someone that isn't looking to sell you things you don't need. Needless to say, I still bought a ball from him because he was just a wealth of knowlege and I felt I could trust in his expertise. I have been out of the game for awhile and was needing a brand new ball. I walked in and knew instantly I was going to be taken car of. I bought a new ball, bag, and shoes, and Butch drilled the holes, and took the time to perfect the thumb hole. I went next door and tried the ball, and it wasn't sized properly, so I went back and he drilled it a bit more and perfection. The best part of the whole experience, besides the technicality and amazing customer service, was he shared his knowledge of the game with me. I used to bowl in HS back in 05 and my average was 185. I bowled recently with lane balls and was throwing 150. It made me want to get back into it so my friends and I plan on joining a league. I just bowled yesterday 5/30/16 for the first time with my new set up. I bowled a 248!!! I couldn't even fathom it I was tripping out so hard, my friends were even tripping out. I thought jeez I got real lucky. My second game I bowled a 201 and third I bowled a 209. That's a 219 average!!! I am still in shock as I am writing this, I am so happy I have photos to prove it, and a couple of friends who will vouch for me. This place is the definition of A+ customer service. Came here a few years back, not knowing a thing about bowling and Butch patiently helped me pick a ball and drill it to fit my hand like a glove. Recently, I wanted to switch to fingertip grip so yesterday I went back to Butch and the service was the exact same, A+. He got me situated with a nice ball, drilled the holes and helped me with my transition from the conventional grip to the fingertip grip. I decided I wanted to get my first real ball. I found Butches shop after doing a search for pro shops. I saw the pictures of the selection and read a little of Butches history and I figured it was a good place to start. After listening to him talk to the customer ahead of me and taking the time to get him sorted I had a pretty good feel for what kind of store I was in. This is truly someone who genuinely has passion for what he does and clearly is knowledgeable. He listened to my wants, had me throw a few balls to get a feel for weight and patiently answered any questions I asked. He then helped steer me towards an affordable ball, asked how I wanted to grip it and proceeded to get my measurements.
