I did some research myself and have gone to ranges so I had an idea of what I wanted and what I needed to do. When I arrived, the store is in a small lot and looks a bit hidden and old. Only one room I think had AC but that was where I took my test and spent my whole time in. It's not very assuming or a luxurious place, but it has a charm and very honest feel to it. The staff there were friendly, patient, and helpful (The 2 ladies that helped me were, Tami and I didn't get the name of the other lady, but she felt like the owner). They were both very knowledgeable, honest, and transparent with their answers and recommendations, and I didn't feel pressured for anything. I was given a few firearms to try that I talked to them about and a few that they recommended. They also said anything that they did not have in store, they could order for me and did their best to accommodate or find something similar for me to feel out. They had a wide assortment of firearms, at least in my eyes, and what they kept stocked made sense. I didn't look through the whole store and everything they had, but I will tomorrow. From what I browsed and saw while I walked in and around, they have many standard picks and accessories that make sense to get in person, and a few interesting pieces. Larger items or more common items, like safes, they were very transparent and said they did not stock and that it's better to find one online, which made sense business wise. I like that they understood what is feasible for them to stock and what not to; both for their interest of keeping their inventory moving, but also to not peddle something that the customer wouldn't want or be satisfied with. I was shown everything in great detail and kindly. I made my purchase and was given instruction on what to do, what to expect, and a time frame for when I can pick things up. For my FSC, I got clear instruction, some helpful preface, and then the paperwork was straightforward and simple. I was guided for it to be as smooth as possible. I got my card and everything done and the prices were as expected and fair. I will update my review if anything changes, but considering the positive experience and friendliness of the staff, I don't think I will have anything to update. I don't know enough about prices for different models and ammo to split hairs on that, and this is a local small business, so it doesn't make sense coming here with the expectation of below market prices. The price range on the models I looked at seemed to be around the ballpark range of what I saw online for MSRP. I'm sure you could look around and get quotes to find things cheaper, but considering this is a local business and near me, I'm not coming here to try to haggle for the lowest price. I care more for the experience and personal interaction. With that said though, I also don't like small businesses that don't keep prices competitive with the rest of the market. I think this business does a fair job with it. As I mentioned before, the items I looked at, I did some research on, and the prices were in the ballpark of what I saw online which is a great indication. For what I purchased, it came as a set and luckily for me, was also on sale, so I feel my purchase was actually on the better price range.

I did a few days' worth of research on classes and instructors in my area and eventually decided Veterans Training Group was the best around. They offer an ample selection of classes for new gun owners like me and more advanced shooters. I enrolled in their NRA Basic Pistol course on a date that best fit my schedule. I was able to hop onto a Zoom meeting with Steven Hung shortly after I got off work and he took the time to get to know what I was looking to get from the course, what made me decide to become a gun owner, and he tailored the content to emphasize certain things that were relevant to my situation. Steven answered all the questions I had going in and all the new questions I had as we covered the materials. At the end our call, we agreed to meet at the La Puente Firing Range for the live fire portion of the course. I got the opportunity to apply the concepts from the course with my own gun. I'd been to a firing range 3 times before without any training or guidance beyond random YouTube videos I'd found and just "doing what felt right." Up until then, my untrained results had been "OK" but nothing special. This time, with Steven's instruction, guidance, and tips, I saw my accuracy improve DRAMATICALLY in just a few magazines' worth of shots and started understanding the fundamentals of shooting. I walked away from that live fire session ready to hit the range again ASAP to practice and hone the skills Steven taught me that evening. I look forward sharpening my skills as a new shooter and highly recommend Veterans Training Group to anyone who wants to develop their shooting skills. The shop has a modern look and even though it is not very large, it is clean, organized, and easy to navigate. They carry a solid selection of pistols along with higher caliber firearms. When I walked in, the staff seemed a bit busy and I was not greeted right away, but after a moment Octavio helped me out. He was friendly, courteous, and took the time to explain the process for purchasing ammo. I originally went in to buy a few boxes, but I ended up purchasing bulk ammo for a good price. I also picked up a magazine while I was there. I asked about having a firearm shipped to their location if I bought one online, and Octavio explained that it is definitely possible and walked me through how that works. Just wrapped up my 8-hour LASD CCW refresher with Medic Up Consulting, and let me tell you, these…read moreguys are the real deal. If you've been to enough of these classes over the years like I have, you know they can sometimes turn into a dry lecture or a massive instructor ego trip. Or both. Not here. The guys running the show--Ron, Juan, and the rest of the crew--are active and retired law enforcement, veterans, and first responders. They aren't just reading slides out of a manual; they're sharing actual, street-level experience. There's no fluff and absolutely zero attitude, just straight-shooting, practical advice from people who have actually been there. Every single instructor, and there are a lot of them, are approachable, engaging, and legitimately want to help you become a safer and more knowledgeable CCW card holder. The day starts with a safety brief and then some shooting drills, followed by the live-fire qualification, all of it up at Burro Canyon (give yourself extra time to get there, this place is in the middle of the boondocks). Safety was locked down tight, but the environment was relaxed enough that everyone could focus and get some solid training in. The instructors readily admit that the actual shooting qualification score is a no-brainer, so they weave in more things like drawing from the holster and dropping magazines. The instructors are constantly on the move, adjusting your grip, giving you tips to be a safer and more accurate shooter. Very, very cool. Following the shooting qualifications and a lunch break, they handled the legal updates and use-of-force stuff clearly and kept the class moving. One of the best parts is that they actually weave trauma medical training ('Stop the Bleed') right into the course. Knowing how to save a life is just as important as knowing how to handle a firearm, and most other CCW classes completely skip that side of the coin. I will confess that as a new hunter, I carry a tourniquet, but I didn't consider some of the nuances the instructors brought up, like rapid access from the pack, putting it on one-handed, high and tight, etc. And we actually practiced using it! If you need your initial permit or you're just looking for a renewal class that won't waste your time, don't look anywhere else. Professional, down-to-earth, and genuinely good people. Five stars all day long.

Without a doubt, this was one of the most challenging experiences for me in academia, and I have an advanced degree in Biology. So, whatever you do, do not take this program lightly. The material covered is very comprehensive, with certain aspects mirroring year one of medical school. Given the duration of the program, there will unquestionably be times when you're overcome by the sheer volume of material covered in such a short time frame. Whatever you do, **don't get discouraged.** Stay the course. Rest assured, the staff at RCI are there to support you as best as they can. Because your success is a direct reflection of them-- their ability to ensure you are well prepared for the board exam and will make a positive contribution to the medical community at large. You see, everyone has a common goal here. The goal is for you to succeed. Outstanding experience overall. But again, this is far from easy. While the role is that of technician, this is not an "on the surface" academic program. The demand is great, and the bar is high. Although, you've been given somewhat of a head start seeing as the support system at RCI is stellar. The instructors and laboratory training are top tier.
