I have never seen a fully stocked mini supermarket like this one. It is filled with tons of isles and a grip of different products. We went here because we were a little thirsty from walking around. So decided to hop into the Westside Market to see what it was all about. They have a deli in the back where you can also get sandwiches and meats as well. Catering to a lot of students around the area, food portion is sometimes in halved or quartered packaging (ie pies and junior cakes). ***WARNING PLEASE READ!!!*** I'd like to share an experience I had on 10/7 with a grocery bagger at this WSM location. As I'm trying to enter the store I notice that this employee is blocking about 80% of entrance. I had enough room to get by but he wasn't paying attention at all and backed into me as I'm trying to squeeze past knocking me into the shelf to my right. Whatever, no big deal. It's NYC and people bump into one another all the time. The employee then tells me that I should have told him excuse me. I'm thinking, what? You just knocked me into a shelf because you weren't paying attention and now you're demanding an apology. As I begin to tell him my side of the story he flat out ignores me, talks over me telling me i should just say sorry next time, then goes and grabs his manager. As I attempt to tell my version of the story to his manager, he's talking over me and and not letting me speak and telling the manager to kick me out and how he's not gonna let me check out if I try to buy anything. The manager couldn't even hear my side of the story bc he was so preoccupied holding him back. It was so absurd and childish. I just laughed at the absurdity of it all bc they weren't letting me speak and when he saw me laugh he switched and started pressing me and walking me down like he was going to assault me. I said "what are you gonna do assault me?" He then started making his way toward me again while being held back by the manager. Had the manager not held him back I'm 100% sure he would have assaulted me. I start making my exit to get away from this guy and he starts yelling at the top of his lungs and calling me a 'creep' and a 'weirdo'. I go back to take a picture of him (shown bellow) for reference and he continues to hurl childish insults at me at the top of his lungs making a huge scene. Then they kicked me out. I've been shopping at this place 7 days a week for nearly two years. I love it and have left positive. A lot of the cashiers know me and recognize me. I want to continue shopping there but I also don't want to be assaulted when this guy recognizes me. I spoke with corporate who said they are gonna wait until the next day to review the security footage (odd decision to put this off for a day when your employee is going ballistic and threatening to beat people up). UPDATE: after speaking with WSM corporate they informed me that the employee in question had been there for 20 years and was simply "having a bad day" and "going through some things" and that no disciplinary action would be taken. They also watched the security footage and confirmed that everything I said in this review was true and accurate. Don't shop here unless you don't mind getting beaten down by the bag-boy on your way to get groceries. read more

It's relatively small but the super-effective use of space should be taught in business schools. Grocery stores like the Jersey City Shop-Rite are a high-risk, high-reward adventure, while Citarella on the other end of the spectrum is undeniably classy but maybe too high-priced and serene. They do not display prices on most merchandise, especially when it's sold at inflated prices. Example? 90% of beers do not have price tags. I know what their strategy is: they think people will not want to go back to the relevant aisle for lower priced merchandise and line up again at the cash register, or go to another store two or three blocks away. Considering that there aren't a lot of places this size in the neighborhood except some bodegas, this place has a lot of variety and stocks grocery items which are unique. The selection of pre-made food to drinks to vegetables and fruits is decent and aside from some specific ethnic foods you can find most items easily... It is NYC and so the price are obviously higher here as You pay more for the location and convenience... That said, if You need to use the restroom (God Forbid) no dice... they will tell you that they don't have any. Ya just can't be all things too all people, but barring any personal vendettas and lousy workers that would rather be just about anywhere other than at work, I cant conceptualized the poor experiences. Every aisle with every product shines like the top of the Chrysler Building, boxes, bags, cans and bottles aren't just clean and properly placed, they're immaculate. The cheese selection was a scaled back Dean & Deluca with many proud legacy formages. (Funny, I have two friends with the surname Deluca that collectively possess about as much cheese knowledge as your average third grader.) Manchego as a managers special? Nice. The man from Lamancha would stew in the waxy rope rind itself and while considering this, I took three cute little wedges. A drop from fourteen to twelve a pound on cheese is significant. I would leave zero stars if I could. Only last night while shopping here my husband remarked on how bad the management must be due to the hostility and rudeness from the staff. I had to go in again today to get something and heard a female employee talking to the staff like they were dogs. She mentioned to one employee loudly "you are the one complaining about it, so it's your problem not mine" then later I heard who I think was the same employee barking at another man telling him"I'm going in here, (an office door) so don't bother me and don't come find me!" I very rarely leave bad reviews as you can see from my review history. I've been a customer of this location for quite some time now, and I think we're going to be taking a break from one another - possibly forever. I stopped purchasing cheese here a few months back because what they have on display is more often than not spoiled; it's my suspicion they think cheese lasts forever and simply relabel it when expired. I have also had many incidences when items rang up at the register for prices other than marked. Usually, I just let it go, because I'm not in the business of arguing with people over a dollar or two, but if it was pointed out, adjustments were willingly made and that would be that. Many of their items aren't marked at all, which is of course against the law here. A night when I picked up two bottles of Q tonic that should have been no more than seven bucks a pop jumps immediately to mind; they rang up at $14.99 a piece. Recently - on my last two visits - I have been confronted with incidences of produce being rung up at a much higher organic price, even though it was not marked as such and bore no visible evidence of organic cultivation beyond the supposed meaning of the color of a rubber band or staff-applied SKU sticker. Today's example was a pair of red bell peppers in a bin clearly marked on the chalkboard above at $2.49 a pound. On arrival at the register, these two absolutely spotless pieces of fruit that looked to have come out of an injection molding machine suddenly mutated into $5.99 organics. Upon telling the cashier, her response was "It's not my problem." I use quotes because that is exactly what she said. On probing further, while stressing that I wasn't asking for a price adjustment but for the sign to be changed, she expanded upon her thoughts. She is only paid to work the register, and nothing else is of any concern to her. She pointed to far end of the checkout area and said the manager was over there. When I requested that she go get him, she said that she would not, told me to get him myself, and when I stated that I am not her employee to order around and inquired with incredulity if she actually worked there, her answer was, "Fuck you." "Fuck you." Well, fuck you, Westside Market, and fuck you too, useless individual with few future growth employment prospects. The manager did find his way over very slowly upon hearing the altercation and repeated the statement about the peppers being organic. After reiterating that the problem was not with the product or the price, but the signage, he mumbled something about changing the sign, and I left. A half a block down the street, he chased me down and said my credit card did not go through, which may or may not be true because I did not wait for a receipt, and so I told him to take the peppers back. I should have told him where to shove them. Upon further investigation, my only option for making a complaint to the company is to email the very man with whom I last interacted; there is no discernable valid contact information available for a central corporate office. Even a whois search of the domain name reveals that it was registered through a proxy, and I can't even file a complaint with the NYC DCA over their practice on this occasion because I did not make a purchase and have no supporting documentation. I will not pursue the matter further in any formal capacity, but absolutely will say bad things about them to everyone I know should the opportunity arise. Leaving the unnecessary frustration over unscrupulous business practices to everybody else seems like the best idea; maybe it will catch up to them someday. I found everything I needed and was in and out in 15 minutes- hard to argue with that! Produce was fresh, they had two different container sizes of baby arugula, multiple brands for romaine, your typical NYC selection of overripe vs. baseball hard avocados, etc. etc. Clean, good selection. I think they really utilize their small space well to fit in a wide range of food. I can see it getting annoyingly crowded after work due to the narrow aisles, but that's most supermarkets in the city, especially in this area. After waiting about 4 years, we finally got a new supermarket in the 'hood, the extremely overpriced and shifty West Side Market on 3rd between 16th and 17th. (I got a chuckle reading the glowing reviews of this store from all the millenniums who seem to enjoy getting ripped off.) Unfortunately, we're slowly discovering some crappy practices going on here, including: 1) Waaaay overpriced produce that goes bad quickly. I think they sneakily rotate in old stuff, despite expiry dates. 2) Deli staff who are too busy with chit chat to notice customers; seem annoyed when you ask for something. And, they are clueless about slicing meat! 3) I've had to return products several times already: stale bread, fruit, and macaroni salad from their "Maria" line of prepared foods. It's really getting annoying. 4) The manager is a non-communicative bozo who spends his time pushing carts around. That's about it. We wanted a nice neighborhood place. This is a rip-off market with unfriendly staff and questionable sales practices. Save your money and shop elsewhere. read more

Wow. Wow wow wow. Love this place. Discovered it when a friend brought some dips over for the Superbowl party. Awesome! Had to come in and visit the source of such delicious dips. Found myself in a wonderland of deliciousness. My girlfriend immediately gravitated towards the ABSURD cheese selection. And we found ourself ogling over cheeses for half an hour. And we even tried a few in the store. Ended up buying about 4 different kinds Next, the dips. Holy moly. And by moly I mean guacamole. About 5 kinds of it. Of which we got one. And about 20 kinds of hummus. And homemade flavored peta chips. And about 20 kinds of cream cheeses. And about 30 kinds of tapenades, sun dried tomato spreads, pestos, the list goes on and on. We ended up with the sun dried tomato tapenade and a contain of whole sun dried tomatoes in oil and caper brine. There's also ample selection of normal food items that would be in any market, plus a large selection of ethnic and specialty sauces, jarred veggies and spreads, snacks, etc from all around the world. Overall love this place and definitely definitely coming back again soon. PS the cheeses were fantastic. We got a rosemary gruyere, a horseradish cheddar, a goat, and a hot pepper blend. If you live in the Union Square area, you know it's overrun by grocery stores with lines out the door (Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, Food Emporium, etc.), but Westside Market is a refreshing local-feeling grocery store that's never too crowded, like a needle in the grocery store haystack. I love this store for so many reasons. First of all, who wouldn't love a place that greets you before you even enter with fresh produce? The outside of the store is lined with fruits and vegetables that always smell so sweet and delectable. Once inside, it's easy to navigate the place and sort through organic fruits and veggies, prepared foods, and - my favorite - a large selection of delicious hummus, dips, and guac. My favorite is their eggplant, garlic and tzatziki dip. Every aisle holds a new surprise. I once left with fresh lobster to add to my salad, a feta hummus, and a delicious peach loose leaf tea. Also, their cheese selection is INCREDIBLE and there's samples everywhere :P This is a great place for foodies and people who appreciate quality food. They have a great selection of hot food and salads. My co workers and I come here a The 3 bean avocado salad is so light and good, must try. The Honey glazed salmon is definitely a must as well. I gave an extra star for hours being 24, but overpriced and the prices aren't on a lot of items so you have to ask and then it's like 5.99 for a small pint of old tomatoes. A few items cost the same at whole foods so I get those on occasion but the lack of price tags deserves a fine, because it wastes everybody's time and seems a scam. The cheese dept at WSM used to be ok with average prices but now they are totally overpriced for the quality. I'm sure that cheese gets thrown away or sold old because I got an inedible one. read more
