Jeff's Jams & Jellies. UpCountry Guava Butter and Lilikoi Butter.
Daniel B.

Whalers General Stores are one-stop shops, similar to convenience stores and Hawaii's ABC Stores, but a step up. I believe there are four Whalers General Stores on Maui, two in Lahaina and two in Kihei. We visited this location in Kihei while shopping at The Shops at Wailea. This Whalers General Store has a pretty large space on the first floor, near the center of the mall. It's got a deli, poke bar, and ice cream bar. They sell clothing, gifts, souvenirs, and useful accessories (e.g. Croakies). They also sell packaged snacks, refrigerated beverages, and day-to-day goods like sunscreen and toiletries. This store was clean and well-stocked with useful items and necessities. My wife, sister, and mom purchased local Maui coffee, HI Spice hot sauces, and Jeff's Jams & Jellies-brand butters, spreads, and dressings from this store. They were particularly huge fans of Jeff's Jams & Jellies and purchased multiple jars from other stores too, including an ABC Store and the Maui Pineapple Store in Lahaina. I recommend Jeff's Jams & Jellies Lilikoi Butter (passionfruit), UpCountry Guava Butter, and Pineapple Butter. The Pineapple Coconut Jam and Papaya Vinaigrette are good too. Check out the full selection at https://www.jeffsjamsandjellies.com/. We stocked up and have been enjoying them at home on the mainland. Service was good. There's plenty of easy-to-find parking for this Whalers General Store because of the shopping mall's spacious lots.

This is a nice store with many simple gift ideas. The food side is completely dark. And only one lady for the whole store. We were looking for a aloha gift for our neighbor on the mainland that watered our Cactus in the two yards since we've been gone. We found a nice beach tote that was zippered and had a second lining. So you could take cold items with you. Perfect, she has a place in Mexico that is all about the beach. The mall itself is very closed up. Art and jewelry and a little clothing going on. Nowhere to sit.

My daughter bought a purse here and it broke in three days. She tried to return it in my presence and they denied her. They said that I would have to come back the next day and speak to a manager the fact that they sold a product that broke within three days and did not return. It is unacceptable.

They sell maui cookie lady cookies. Im so stoked...

We were at the shops at wailea so on tge way out we stopped here. I knew they maui coffee lady cookies and I had to get some. At 6.99 I didn't mind that, I just love her cookies it's that delicious. Well this store has poke too and other food choices. If you're at the shops at wailea come here check it out you might find something you can take home as a souvenir. It will not be chel that's the thing. Friendly customer service.

Bottom Line: Souvenirs, snacks and prepared foods. Whaler's General Store is a Hawaiian chain and a good place to stock up on souvenirs at thrifty prices. They also have a wide assortment of packaged snacks and beverages. This location has a deli case with prepared foods that seem like they would be a great alternative to a heavy meal out and perfect to take for a sunset picnic. This location is located downstairs at The Shops at Wailea and is a decent size store.

The family and I stopped by Whalers General Store after getting ice cream at Lappert's across the mall to kill some time and check out what they had to offer. Whalers General Store is very similar to the ABC Stores around the island; they both carry all your touristy souvenir needs, snacks, drinks, candy, magazines, clothing, prepared foods, etc. but I thought the Whalers General had a better selection of everything and some more quality items than the ABC Stores. They have a great prepared foods selection with sandwiches, dried goods, sushi, mochi, etc. that actually looked rather good! I would have stopped to get something if I was hungry, and if the deli counter was still open after 8:00pm on a weekday. We also came in looking for my favorite candy bar (Cadbury Caramello) which doesn't seem to exist anywhere on the island. It still wasn't here, but they do have a great candy/snack selection. They also carry beer/wine and hard alcohol.... My kind of store! I would come back to Whalers General Store if I was looking for any of the above things. It can be a cheap breakfast/lunch/snack and drink alternative than the expensive restaurants on the island.

Whaler's is very similar to the ABC Stores you'll find all over the islands, but I have been able to find some things I haven't been able to find at the ABC Stores. The store has lots of souvenirs, island theme jewelry, island flavors snacks, as well as liquor and some household items too. This is a great place to buy some snacks and cheap food, they do have frozen and fresh items. It's in a convenient location to the beach & my hotel, so it's a go to place whenever I'm on this side of the Maui.

It carries the usual touristy items and souvenirs plus anything you forgot to pack, and food/drink. However, this trip I discovered some cute new items that I will consider for future visits. Check out the cute socks! I was happy to find next year's (2027) calendars already in stock, two for $5, or one for $2.99. We also found a warming oven full of spam musubi and chicken katsu musubi! We chose the katsu for a quick shared snack. It was delicious and the perfect size to satisfy our hunger. Customer service is excellent and aloha friendly as always!

This location was a bit subdued compared to others we've been to. It is quiet with employees generally working at trying to look busy. No employees were seen greeting customers. The store's offerings were particularly limited in its grab-and-go food offerings, but had a good variety of dry goods and personal care sundries. There was a limited amount of souvenir selections, beach items and chocolates compared to other ABCs. The selection of lounge wear, t-shirts and Hawaiian apparel were plentiful, and the prices and quality were quite reasonable. ABC Stores offers a Gold Card, which entitles the bearer to free gifts or combinations of gifts after purchasing a certain amount, however no associate mentioned the card at this location. Ask the cashier for one of ABC's Gold Reward card.

Ordering off the menu was also a great option. I got the fried rice and galbi, which came with sides and were all delicious. One thing my friend could not stop talking about was the poke, which was slightly on the spicier side but fresh, soft, and very tasty. This place has it all, and you really cannot go wrong. It might be a bit more on the expensive side depending on what you get, but it is pretty in line with the rest of Hawaii's pricing. Do yourself a favor and check it out. You can also grab groceries and snacks while you are there.

I've been avoiding this review for a long time. I'm hoping that this message will actually land in…read morethe hands of the corporate management team. I live on Maui. I shop at this Safeway constantly. I also shop at the two other Safeway stores in Kahului. There's a glaring issue at this store which is often noticed by several shoppers as we all search the: Entrances, self-checkout, every checkout line, back to the self-checkout and then... Back outside to get a cart because there's absolutely zero hand baskets to grab a few items. None. Chronically. I shop at odd hours. Tonight, 12:30 in the morning? There were none, anywhere. A few weeks ago? Stacks of them. They suddenly disappeared. I shop there daily. I do not buy a cart full of groceries. I live alone and do not dare fill my fridge. A bag of groceries at a time is sufficient. Having to use a cart causes gathering more items than will fit in a bag, which I want to be able to carry in one trip from my parking area to my second floor apartment. Stacks of these baskets just disappear from this store, suddenly. No other nearby grocery stores apparently have this problem. Times? Always a stack by the entrance. Foodland? Always a stack by the entrance. The other Safeway locations? So many it makes me wonder what's actually happening. The employee I spoke to says 'people just take them to their cars and drive away with them.' Ok, sure. Then why not the Times and Foodland baskets? Why not the Safeway location that has two homeless camps nearby? That store has more hand baskets than parking spots! Recently they started charging 15 cents for bags. Maybe I'm just old school but isn't that what the food we pay a lot for is already supposed to cover the costs of? I pay $5 a pound for 5 apples and then I have to pay 15 cents to avoid juggling them? But with any phone number there's an always sale on most items. They will discount items for me sometimes in dollars but if I want to buy enough I can't carry them it's 15 cents more. Oh, and then they also eliminated the bags with carry handles so paying for bags decreased the quality of each bag I have to buy. And I have to use a cart to make my selections, pushing the cart around looking so empty. It's a psychological trick - remove the hand baskets that carry exactly one bag of groceries, make customera use a cart that is easy to impulsively add a few items too many for a bag, charge for bags and decrease the quality of the bags so they're more difficult to carry. Oh, and once you walked all over hoping to find a convenient hand baskets you have to walk back out to the parking lot to get a cart with self-locking wheels that sometimes activate automatically by one of the two entrances. It's the ONLY grocery store on Maui that can't seem to keep track of their hand baskets. Two stars because this problem is isolated to this store and that needs upper management to intervene. Oh, and while I'm getting management on the line - your new flavors of always on sale buy 2 get 1 free items don't ring up correctly - that's a $4.99 sleight of hand, I mean, false advertising that has tricked me a few times until I figured out what the problem is: the new UPC flavor isn't tied to the sale price that the other 7 flavors of same brand and size beverages are displayed with. An entire beverage cooler with every item marked buy 2 get 1 free should have all the prices marked correctly. I have mentioned it to each store 'management' and every cashier corrects it manually because that's the right price. I'll change my rating to 3 stars if you fix the false advertising on the new flavor beverages. I'll make it 4 stars when the hand basket problem gets solved. If the store manager can't figure it out maybe they could ask the management at Times or Foodland just down the road a bit how they are able to keep their baskets - baskets that appear like they have had them for awhile.
