IMHO Whalers General Store has a different vibe than the ABC Store, (which I love!) Both provide the same things; souvenirs, gifts, food to-go, aloha wear, lotions, made-in-Hawaii crafts, etc. It's like comparing apples and oranges. I like both stores. This particular Whalers is at the Shops of Wailea. I was in search of a specific set of Island Essence lotions/oils that a friend requested. I knew Whaler's would have them, and indeed they did. However, the price went up substantially. I really had no choice but to buy them anyway since my friend wanted them and was paying for them. This is a nice convenient General Store at the Shops of Wailea. We have been staying at the Villa nearby so it was nice to take a short walk grab some snacks and miscellaneous items we forgot to pack. The store has a variety of options for adult beverages, personal hygiene, snacks and souvenirs. $.20 for a small paper bag is exploitative and downright rude! I feel like just because we are in Wailea you think you can just charge people for every little thing but this does not go unnoticed. I would recommend that nobody gives you any business. This is ridiculous. You already overcharged for all of your items in the store by more than double average markup and then you still keep pushing it with the bags. I'm surprised you didn't charge us for a paper receipt. Whalers General Stores are one-stop shops, similar to convenience stores and Hawaii's ABC Stores, but a step up. I believe there are four Whalers General Stores on Maui, two in Lahaina and two in Kihei. We visited this location in Kihei while shopping at The Shops at Wailea. This Whalers General Store has a pretty large space on the first floor, near the center of the mall. It's got a deli, poke bar, and ice cream bar. They sell clothing, gifts, souvenirs, and useful accessories (e.g. Croakies). They also sell packaged snacks, refrigerated beverages, and day-to-day goods like sunscreen and toiletries. This store was clean and well-stocked with useful items and necessities. My wife, sister, and mom purchased local Maui coffee, HI Spice hot sauces, and Jeff's Jams & Jellies-brand butters, spreads, and dressings from this store. They were particularly huge fans of Jeff's Jams & Jellies and purchased multiple jars from other stores too, including an ABC Store and the Maui Pineapple Store in Lahaina. I recommend Jeff's Jams & Jellies Lilikoi Butter (passionfruit), UpCountry Guava Butter, and Pineapple Butter. The Pineapple Coconut Jam and Papaya Vinaigrette are good too. This is a nice store with many simple gift ideas. The food side is completely dark. And only one lady for the whole store. We were looking for a aloha gift for our neighbor on the mainland that watered our Cactus in the two yards since we've been gone. We found a nice beach tote that was zippered and had a second lining. So you could take cold items with you. Perfect, she has a place in Mexico that is all about the beach. The mall itself is very closed up. Art and jewelry and a little clothing going on. My daughter bought a purse here and it broke in three days. She tried to return it in my presence and they denied her. They said that I would have to come back the next day and speak to a manager the fact that they sold a product that broke within three days and did not return. It is unacceptable. read more

OK, I'm writing this review for one reason only; the guava bread. On our last morning in Maui, we came here to grab a few essential items before heading to the airport. Along with some spam musubi, my boyfriend grabbed a small loaf of guava cake by the register because "it looked good". After we got back home, we found the loaf sitting in a bag and decided to eat it while it was fresh. To our surprise, it was delicious! It was full of favor and super moist! The only regret we had was not to get a truck load to bring home! We decided to stop in the General Store to look at souvenirs. What we didn't expect is the fresh food they had available. We came during the evening after 5pm and I noticed they had food under heat lamps and a poke bar. The lady behind the counter was already packing the poke into containers. I asked whether they were still selling them and what poke option is the most popular (since there was 3-4 selections). The nice lady gave me samples of each of the poke they had available. I was pleasantly surprised with the personable service. I opted to order the 1 choice option (choice of poke with white or brown rice) for $8. The prepared cooked food under the heat lamps where half off! SCORE!!! This was our dinner for the night (unexpectedly). There was spamasubi which the last one was just taken before my eyes! DARN! I ended up with the salisbury steak with brown rice for $3! The portion was generous as well. We didn't buy anything else, and we actually came back another time to check out what other prepared foods they had. Good selection although may be limited by the end of the day. The family and I stopped by Whalers General Store after getting ice cream at Lappert's across the mall to kill some time and check out what they had to offer. Whalers General Store is very similar to the ABC Stores around the island; they both carry all your touristy souvenir needs, snacks, drinks, candy, magazines, clothing, prepared foods, etc. but I thought the Whalers General had a better selection of everything and some more quality items than the ABC Stores. They have a great prepared foods selection with sandwiches, dried goods, sushi, mochi, etc. that actually looked rather good! I would have stopped to get something if I was hungry, and if the deli counter was still open after 8:00pm on a weekday. We also came in looking for my favorite candy bar (Cadbury Caramello) which doesn't seem to exist anywhere on the island. It still wasn't here, but they do have a great candy/snack selection. They also carry beer/wine and hard alcohol.... My kind of store! I would come back to Whalers General Store if I was looking for any of the above things. A very eclectic store. Seriously. You have a deli, but there are gift shot glasses, but there are clothes and jewelry, and alcohol! Need sunscreen or a hat, they've got it. It's a one stop shop! Not sure about buying clothes to wear from here, they look a little too touristy for my taste, but the food is pretty decent. You can get snacks or lunch. Want to have a picnic, you can get a beach mat, too. That's to go with your wine and fried chicken. The deli sandwiches are pretty good and there are tables outside to have your lunch. When I'm staying in Wailea, I like to come here to stock up my mini fridge with some drinks. You know, so I'm not paying for an expensive bottle of water. The employees are ok, some are friendly, some just working. Since the store has a wide variety of items, it gets kind of crowded. Parking is the same as the rest of the mall. Within the same shopping center as Island, it is better to come to Whalers. The deli might not have every offering, but the sandwiches hot bento boxes and must importantly the poke bowls are identical if not better. Better especially in price, expect ~30% discount compared to Island/ABC. For example the poke is $12.99/lb versus the $18.99/lb of Island (as of March 2019). Tip on souvenirs: Bought a local Maui honey jar to gift. TSA removed from luggage. Do not buy any liquids that are over 3 oz due to TSA checkpoint on the flight home. This is a great little convenience store in the Wailea area. If you need simple things like toothpaste, dental floss, and other hygiene products this is a place you can get those items. They also sell various drinks (water, alcohol, tea, and soda). In addition to drinks they have a cold case where you can get items like precut fruit, sandwiches, cake slices, macaroni salad, and potato salad. They also have a whole case dedicated to ice cream mochi. They have tons of amazing flavors like green tea, strawberry, chocolate, espresso, and mango. This is also a great place to get small gift for friends. Lots of junky knickknacks for people who like that kind of stuff. Whaler's is very similar to the ABC Stores you'll find all over the islands, but I have been able to find some things I haven't been able to find at the ABC Stores. The store has lots of souvenirs, island theme jewelry, island flavors snacks, as well as liquor and some household items too. This is a great place to buy some snacks and cheap food, they do have frozen and fresh items. It's in a convenient location to the beach & my hotel, so it's a go to place whenever I'm on this side of the Maui. read more

For tourists, this is a great spot to grab affordable sandwiches, ice, and all your car-trip & beach needs. For locals, this is the affordable spot for hot items, sandwiches, anything you may need for that quick work break and lunch time. There's outside seating with tables and chairs. Later in the day they discount their hot items and you can possibly score some pretty good deals. To conclude , this is the place for whatever needs. They keep a hefty stock of fresh baked goods, deli items, hot foods, musabi and poke! For taking Home they have souvenirs and T-shirt's. Guess what? They even sell soup! When we stay at the Grsnd Wailea, this is one of our favorite stores. Unlike other Whalers, this one has a fantastic deli. As lunch can be pricey in this area, it cannot be best for reasonable options. They have local favorites like plate lunch and sushi. They aldo have generous ( enough for 2) sized sandwiches. Our favorite is the Thanksgiving everyday....turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce. This visit we were delighted to find ice cream mochi. Yum! And it is frozen hard enough to make ut back to the hotel. Place is solid. They have all the necessities and the price wasn't bad either. They were in par with large groceries in the area and sometimes with mainland prices. This reminded me of market of choice or whole foods(smaller scale of course)They had a deli, looked like they made fresh food that's local to them. Poke, sushi,and other mixed salads. I noticed an awesome mochi station! Over 6 different flavors, yum! The store had a great selection of gifts for loved ones at home, dresses,shirts,flasks,picture frames,pens,beauty products,chocolates and well you get the point. They even had dog treats from maui. Overall this is your glorified ABC store you see on the islands, if you haven't checked one out I would recommend it just for a little time killer and to pick up some mochi :) oh yeah and don't forget to get your friends some gifts ;) read more

This place is great! I was able to get post cards to send to family, a cheap boogie board ($15) to chase waves with, and buy seasoned ahi by the pound for lunch (12.99/ lb). It is basically a beachy general store. Parking for this shopping center is free for one hour. It is a really short walking distance from the Grand Wailea Resort. There are other stores to shop in, but this one has all your grab and go needs, especially when traveling. The service was a little slow, but I guess that's what people refer to as "island time". I would put this on your list of quick stops, along with the ABC store located upstairs. read more

We came across Whaler's from all the amazing Yelpers and we were not disappointed. We explored most of the island one night and realized just how late it was and was famished. We heard about the poke there and decided to check it out. The poke counter was already closed, but there were still some fresh poke on the side all packed and ready to go. We got 4 different containers, asked for some hot rice (which we didn't know was available!), and two spam musubis (because you just have to!), and our bill was below $15... There were poke for the next morning! It was soo delicious and we came back a couple of days later to pick up more snacks. WORTH IT. read more

There are tons of these stores all over Hawaii. I went to my first Whaler's in Kauai and liked it then. This trip, I liked the store even more-simply for convenience purposes. This is the largest Whaler's I have seen with a fresh food counter where they make sandwiches, salads, etc. to order. I figured this is mainly because there are few food choices at the shops and none are fast for those wanting to grab something to take the the beach. The store is full of all the same tchotchkes as the other ones, along with large wine section and junk food. If I had to bring back silly souvenirs for people, this would be the place I would get them. read more

If you have one "must-do" in Wailea, it's this store! Get kalua pork for $4 here or $24 at some shoddy restaurant... hm... You can buy groceries, snacks (Maui kettle cooked chips are phenomenal and I miss them so much), sushi, freshly made food or pre-made food, souvenirs, "island-style" clothes for cheap-er (I bought a hat and a dress, don't judge me), a pretty bad ukulele, jewelry, alcohol, etc. We spent so much time and money here, but it was worth it. If I ever stay in Wailea again, it's good to know that there's a Whaler's close by for all your needs. They have a Redbox DVD rental + healthy/decadent snacks in case you want a quiet night in. They also have all your picnic needs-- blankets, ice box, deli foods, bento boxed meals, drinks, etc.-- in case you're a planning a day at the beach or need to stock up before going to Hana. Whalers is a great and cheap place to pick up necessities. Since most things in Wailea are more pricey. Similar to ABC, whalers sell snacks, drinks, sunscreen, gifts, clothing etc. and cooked food. They have fresh sandwiches, sushi and other small cold snacks and soup!They also have a variety of mochis. However, while everyone raves about the mochi, I really did not think they were that good. The skin of the mochi is extremely tough (for a mochi) and the flavors were just okay. We got a pack of 6 and wished we didn't... Whaler's has been the saving grace of our stay at the Wailea Marriott (which is about 150 yards from it, give or take). Not only can you stock up on all the kitschy souvenirs you'll want to give to your friends (look... an ironic memento!) or loved ones (no gift irony at all!), but their deli is a great midday option for an affordable, tasty meal. I had a ham on rye for $5.99 and it was damn good. And while the NY Jew in me might say, "You call THAT a ham on rye?!" he would also reprimand me and say, "For $5.99 you should FIND such a sandwich!" So... snacks, sandwiches, food? Check. Souvenirs? Check. Underwater camera? Check. Band-aids for when you cut your foot on lava rock? Check. If you are staying in Wailea (Marriott, Four Seasons, Grand Wailea, etc.) you WILL use the Whaler's General Store at least once during your visit. I found myself walking there almost daily, largely due to poor planning. Oh well, if you are staying at the Four Seasons or Grand Wailea, you won't mind the walking along the beach walkway. It is very scenic. The Whaler's General Store has souvenirs and all of that stuff, just like an ABC store, but what sets it apart is the deli and prepared foods section that they have. It is really nice if you just want a sandwich, some pasta or some soup without paying $50 for room service. They also have chips, dips, chocolates, candy, drinks, beer, liquor, basic food items, ice cream, and a limited selection on fruits, among other things. I didn't really shop around in the souvenirs part, but half of the store was dedicated to that merchandise. The prices are a bit high, but what do you expect. The only other option is to drive to the Safeway in Kihei, which surprisingly isn't that much cheaper. Whaler's is the perfect place to help you out here and there if you are staying in a resort. If you have a full kitchen, Safeway is the place to stock up. read more
