If you live in Smithfield and we share a similar skin complexion I would STRONGLY advise against going to Wharf Hill Brewing Company . I called and placed a to go order last night went to pick it up . As I'm standing at the bar waiting for my food to be bought out I hear a name being repeated over and over again "Harriet Tubman " I look around and see that a man is starring straight at me and calling me "Harriet Tubman" once he noticed he got my attention him and his friends (about 5 of them ) they all burst out in laughter as though this is the funniest thing . I ignore them . He then drops his hat on the ground and says "Harriet are you gonna get that for me " I ignore him . He then begins rattling the ice in his cup and says "Harriet you need to come serve me " I ignore him . Seeing he's getting no rise out of me he takes it a step further and states " why are you here there's no railroad under here and no slaves to help you" i decide it's in my best interest to wait for my food outside . The manager comes out with my food and I let her know of the situation and she states " I think it's best if you just take your food and go on now it's not like you paid for it yet anyways so it's on the house " as though this was all a play to get free food mind you I'd already paid the waitress and tipped at the bar for my order I stated that I would simply be taking my full refund and leaving which she seemed very irritated that I would even want my money back. I say that to say this if the roles were reversed and I was the one harassing someone in a restaurant simply because of their skin color different actions would've occurred and I'm positive bystanders as well as management would've taken a very different approach to handling the situation. 0/10 would NOT recommend. read more

We love this place! Great atmosphere that is full of history and charm. Bartenders are friendly and never let your drink get empty. Service is excellent also. The food is amazing! Burgers, chicken sandwich and BBQ are all top notch and the pretzel roll buns are a nice change from the usual. Not sure what they do to their french fries but they are perfect and the best I've ever had. The beer selection is expansive and definitely a choice for everyone. It can get noisy in here so it's not a place for a quiet romantic dinner. It's a must go to every time we go through Smithfield. read more

I recently discovered a love for chicken pot pie, so when I see it on a menu, it's a given -- I'm trying it. The chicken pot pie at Wharf Hill is good....really good. But I'm kinda sure it's made from Campbell's cream of chicken. Not that there's anything wrong with that. It offered a nice familiarity. I loved the potato salad. And the beer. Looks like a pub inside. Parking is hard after 5:30. It's a tight street with slated downhill spaces. Govern yourselves accordingly. read more

All the food is exceptional we haven't had anything we haven't like from the Prime Rib to the poor boys it's all good and beers on tap are awesome if you love Guinness you have to try "Nitro Milk Stout" made by the left hand brewing. Nice place located in a historic building, in a historic area, in a historic town. Parking is limited but available. The wait time for lunch on a beautiful Saturday was only 10-15 minutes. Staff were friendly and on top of the tables. Food arrived pretty quickly for a place that cook to order, not microwaved. Quite a bit of fried food and limited selection for those watching their Sodium or Fat intake. I had the Hamburger Steak and my better half had the Fish & Chips. My food was outstanding. You could tell it was freshly made, assembled with attention-to-detail. Mashed Potatoes were perfectly made, gravy was great, and not too salty. Onions were caramelized correctly and not over, or undercooked. I tasted my gals fries and they were some of the best I have had. Perfectly cooked. Skins on and not oily. Her fish came either fried or broiled. She loved her fish and Coke Slaw side. I didn't "love" my side of Slaw. It wasn't bad, but there are soo many versions of slaw out there, and this wasn't on my top 20 list. I felt a ever so slight hint of sweet would have elevated this to about 18 or 19. Not a dealbreaker though. This place is a spot to save in favorites, if you want impress that special someone. Good drink and appetizer selection. I had the house made brat sandwich with hand dipped onion rings. Delicious. And it didn't hurt that it was on a pretzel roll! With grilled onions AND saurkraut. This little bar was pretty fantastic. They have 3 of their own beers and a nice variety of local craft beers. I had the brown ale, the hubby had their IPA and our buddy had the pale ale. All of the beers were delicious. The food was amazing. I ordered the spicy shrimp and non-wonton wontons which were all fantastic. Hubby ordered the pulled pork sandwich which according him was phenomenal. (The fries could've been better since they just looked like your everyday frozen fries). The buddy ordered the fried green tomatoes and smoke salmon dip. Both of those were delicious. We pretty much shared amongst ourselves. The atmosphere was great. You can tell they pride themselves in using and reusing historical pieces and beautiful old wood. Just a really nice place. The staff were super friendly, despite being incredibly busy since it is a holiday weekend. Ordered a house made hummus with pita chips and was asked if I wanted carrots and celery sticks... I said sure... and was blown away when a literal pile of them arrived... A hidden gem! Parking is kinda funky. I drove around the block until a spot opened on the street. Luckily I only had to do it once. We enjoyed our visit. If I had a complaint, I'd say it was a little slow being served. It was a 20 min wait before getting seated, but that's totally understandable, given their capacity. It was the time from order to serving that was the long wait. But the food was SO good, and nothing came cold (my biggest peeve of restaurants.) We got onion rings and pretzels with their beer cheese. The onion rings were thick cut and perfectly cooked. The left over queso from the pretzels was so good, we used the rest of it for our entree's fries! We also ordered the chicken pot pie and chicken & chips. The pot pie was thick and hearty, and the philo dough/puff pastry topping was "saved for last," and polished off with a smile. I'm all about homemade chicken fingers. The chicken was very crispy, and extremely well received. Our server was the perfect combo of attentive but absent. We sat right in the middle of the room, my least favorite seating in a restaurant, but there's a lot to admire in that beautiful building. I did look over the menu before we went. After reading reviews for Warf Hill and other places in the area, we figured it was an expensive place, but worth the try. My bill wasn't as high as I expected, which was awesome. Day trip to Smithfield brought my Dad and I here. It's such a neat and eclectic town. The parking totally sucks but what are ya gonna do about that? We got there at lunch peak hours. They were very packed and had a wait. We bellied up to the bar to grab a drink while we waited. The bartender was totally under water and commented endlessly about it. Which in my opinion is totally unprofessional. She took a good 15 minutes to even attempt to talk to us. We finally got a drink. I ordered the Crispin Pear cider. OMG IT WAS SOOOO GOOD! Dad had one of the microbrews and it was very skunky. A man next to me was holding a decorated mug amdni asked what it was about all the handpa Byrd mugs hanging by the bar. He said they had a membership bee club and you got to paint your own mug. That I thought was pretty cool. We finally got a table, small by the window. Nice view. And then we waited, and waited, and waited and waited till I finally got up and asked someone if we were ever going to get a server. It was them I realized you don't come to this cool little place for service, it's the food and beer. So she finally showed up and was very pleasant. She knew her specials. Seeing as we waited forever we already k ew what we wanted. We ordered more drinks, a Blackberry Pear cider for me and dad tried one of the holiday brews from Alpine brewery in CA with vanilla in it. It was amazing! I was skeptical of the vanilla but it finished so nice. We wanted to take a growler to go but they only do that with their own brews. We ordered formed pickles, I got the special of the day which was a blacked Tuna gyro with a full sour cream and dad a burger and fries with bacon and cooked onion. The burger dad said was THE best burger he's had in a long time! The special was ok. The dill sauce made the dish. The spicy roumalade or however you say that was amazing with the pickles. They are spears and not chips which I prefer. As we are waiting for a food the couple next to us say be prepared to wait cause they had been waiting for an hour for their food. I have been here a few times and I am very impressed with the consistency. Each time I have been greeted with a friendly smile and they have been great in accommodating us when we have come in with large parties or if I am coming in with my service dog in tow. As far as food, I have had a few things on the menu and my favorites so far are the po-boy, salmon dip, and the fried green tomatoes. The salmon dip was amazing! I was a little unsure when I saw the slab of Gouda melted over the top, but was quickly amazed by how creamy and delicious it was. I am Southern and a nice fried green tomato will always be on my favorite list when done well. The Wharf knows how to fry a tomato. The po-boy was also very tasty and had an awesome sauce to go with it I always end up dipping my tomatoes in. The Wharf is a place I stop at almost every time I am in Smithfield. If we can't stay to eat, I at least need to bring some salmon dip home for later! We ate here on a week day around noon. The atmosphere is very cool. High ceilings ,old siding and the original wood floors. The food is delicious. Hubby got the bbq sandwich and it was huge and very tasty. I got the Reuben sandwich and it had a lot of corned beef and was great. The corned beef tasted made in house. You can choose about 10 different sides. The french fries are hand cut. Our waitress, Kat, was very attentive and checked on our progress throughout the meal. The in house amber ale was very smooth. I went here yesterday with a group of friends that I haven't seen in a while and we had a great time. My friends all got the restaurant week menu items and I tried out of the pulled BBQ. Their onion rings were amazing, I loved the light breading and their secret signature sauce was great. Originally we were going to get ranch on the side but we didn't need it because their secret sauce was amazing. Their potion sizes were perfect. I tried their Carolina sauce with my BBQ sandwich and I loved it. I'm a vinegar BBQ fan and this didn't disappoint. For dessert my group tried the mousse and it gave everyone a sugar rush in a good way. Our waitress was really nice, attentive and she didn't get upset when my group stayed their for a long period of time. She filled up our drinks a countless amount of time and she was never annoyed. I wish I could remember her name because she was so good (I want to say Erika). The restaurant was huge, which you don't expect from looking through the front door but they had three different sections. The bar stool chairs we sat on weren't super comfortable but that's probably because we sat there for hours. They probably are fine for a regular amount of time. It was a cold day out but you couldn't feel it inside. The bathroom was clean and I liked the chalk board they had inside asking people's opinions. Accidentally ended up in Smithfield and stopped in this little gem and we were so glad that we did! The decor is fantastic, the atmosphere was great, the menu was extensive but not overwhelming and the food was great, but best part was the price! We had 2 sweet teas, the smoked fish dip ( sooooo gooooood) the shrimp and grits special with side order of fries ( sauce was a little salty) fried green tomatoes and a Caesar salad for $33!!! Hadn't been since the COVID1984 hit, but did take out and was like it used to be, 'cept I couldn't belly up to the bar. Passing through Smithfield, my gf and I decided to stop here.. had a rustic feel so felt good about the food. Unfortunately after seeing the menu, they have an ungodly amount of items to choose from. If you know anything about restaurants, that's usually not a good sign.. but I was hopeful.. so I decided to get a sweet tea and a water, but upon getting my tea there was an ant crawling on the rim. Made me think, what else has ants? Is it just ants? What about roaches? Who knows. So I chose not to dine. The indoor appeal was dark and dreary. So we went up the street and stopped at Smithfield gourmet Bakery and cafe..the brewery should take notes. I have been quite impressed with the quality of food and service offered in what is considered "historic Smithfield." Wharf Hill Brewing Co. did not fall short of my expectations. It's location is quaint, tucked away in an old building that has a history of its own. When I first entered it felt like I was taking a step back in time, the bar area gave off saloon vibes while the dining area reminded me of what I like to call "old town America." Their menu was very diverse, offering seafood, hamburgers, pulled pork, and other southern comfort foods. The service was great and we did not wait too long after our orders were placed to receive drinks and food. I would have taken pictures, however, I was so hungry and the plates looked so delicious that all thoughts of delay were disregarded. I got the blackened chicken bbq Mac bowl while my wife got the CBR Wrap. The only reason I am not giving this place 5 stars is because I kind of expected a bit more diversity with the seafood on the menu. They offer around 5 seafood dishes that I saw on the menu. Perhaps this place deserves 5 stars and my expectations were skewed, however, for the sake of my review I have given it 4. We will certainly be back. read more

Poorly run hostess area. Hostess is mostly MIA. Was quoted 20 min to be seated. Took an hour and ten minutes to finally be seated. Once seated, we promptly gave our drink order, appetizer order and meal order to our waitress. 10 minutes later, our waitress came back and informed us that they were out of loaded fries. She then got us another menu so that we could make another appetizer selection. She disappeared for another 10 min. When she returned, we gave our new appetizer order(at this point, still no drinks). 25 min later, appetizers came out cold at the same time as our meal. My wife had ordered the pot pie which came out with the potatoes uncooked. Terrible experience! Nearly 2hours between arrival (quoted 20min to be seated) and receiving our food. read more

I've been here several times. The food is always good... especially the fried green tomatoes. We went as a family a few days ago and were seated in the backroom. The seating is old church pews and cheap metal chairs. These are far to short for the tables. The server said they were going to place blocks under the new legs but hadn't gotten around to it. Fine, but that wouldn't resolve the low chairs. All adults were uncomfortable and the kids shoulders just reached the table top. I know the owners can do better than this. I be sure to request seating in the middle section until this is resolved. read more

I would absolutely love a place like Wharf Hill Brewing Co. to be in my town! A friend and I were visiting from California and got into Smithfield fairly late on a Friday night and we were getting hangry. The downtown area of Smithfield seemed to be dark but thankfully the staff at our hotel pointed us in the right direction. We arrived around 9:00 and the place was packed! The bar was full of customers and the dining room was also fairly crowded but we were able to be seated. The menu had a good mix of food and reasonable prices. We started with the crab balls (how could we not?!?). They were delicious! They had a good amount of crab and they were lightly fried and not greasy. Our entrees were also tasty, we both tried fried green tomatoes as our side and they were a great choice. Our server was friendly and efficient. Following dinner we headed to the bar side of things. I wish I could speak on the behalf of the beer, unfortunately I am not a beer drinker and did not try any. My friend enjoys beer and had fun trying some new varieties and liked being able to order by the pint or half pint. Lee, I believe one of the owners, was an incredibly gracious host. The restaurant/bar is in an old building and he shared stories about the history and renovation of the building; you can tell a lot of love has gone into the business. My wife and I enjoyed drinks here on Saturday and Sunday this past weekend. It was very busy both times we went in but the service was wonderful, warm, and friendly. The owner took the time to review all their tap offerings and even provided tasters to help us make our choice. My wife got an amazing hard pineapple cider and I got a craft beer. Came here with my family for a weekday lunch today, and was surprised to see the place just about full: clearly Wharf Hill does a good business. The restaurant's in a neat location in downtown Smithfield, and it has a great location and ambiance. My primary reason for visiting Wharf Hill was to check out their beer, and they did not disappoint. The bartender was very friendly, and the beers I tried were great: "their Isle of Wheat" hefe is one of the better Hefeweizens I've had. I love that they have reasonably priced 1/2 pint pours, too. The food was mixed. The fried green tomatoes were the best I've ever had: crisp, just the right thickness, and perfectly seasoned. The french fries were also excellent. The oyster po' boy, however - which I'd had high expectations for - was sub-par. I counted six small oysters on the sandwich: given the large bun, they were lost. The bread, tomato, and remoulade (admittedly tasty) completely overwhelmed the oysters. Given the price, $9.50, I'd hoped for more of an oyster sandwich. Wharf Hill is absolutely worthwhile if you're looking for good beer. If I'm ever back, I'll go for beer and appetizers! read more
