This place was great! We met some friends for dinner on a Wednesday and were seated right away. We had a few drinks, the loaded tots appetizer and dinner. I had the brisket grilled cheese which was delicious! So were the tots and fries! The grape frizz fizz beer was amazing!!!! I hate beer and I couldn't taste the beer flavor at all! I have been here a couple times before in the past couple years for work travel. Everything's been great, but I came tonight, and it was exceptional! Nathan was my waiter and helped numerous times picking beers, picking food, and just generally being awesome! I had the happy hour Baja shrimp, which was great, Nathan recommended the grilled cheese, brisket, which was truly exceptional! I ended the night, discussing lots of different beers and recommendations with Todd, the manager who was spectacular. Can't recommend this place enough. If you're in Suffolk, go to Decent People. We came here to celebrate our friend. They were very accommodating to our large crowd. The service was fast and friendly. They have a big selection of beer, wine, and mixed cocktails. I like the self-pour options. We had the Orange Creamsicle Crush and the Decent Long Island Tea. The both cocktails were delicious and refreshing. Food we had the brisket nachos and friend pickles. They were both good. Our friends had the buffalo chicken dip. I would recommend that because it was very good and spicy. The atmosphere is very laid back. They have plenty of TVs. Decent People Taproom has quickly become one of my local favorites, and tonight's visit was no exception. Normally, I go for the self-pour options, but I decided to switch things up and try a mixed drink. I had my heart set on a lavender cocktail, but they didn't have lavender syrup. No worries though, I went with the Salvage Diver instead, and it was great! It was sweet, coconutty, and very refreshing. I also ordered the spinach artichoke dip for starters. It always hits the spot. I ordered the Buffalo Chicken Sandwich. I've had it before but this time it was a bit different. It was drenched, literally dripping in buffalo sauce, but when I made it to the center, there was no flavor or sauce. Fair warning: this is a messy sandwich but it became near impossible to eat as the bun fell apart. Overall, I wasn't impressed by the sandwich but I still enjoyed the meal. With warmer weather on the horizon, I can't wait to enjoy a meal outside at their picnic tables. Definitely recommend checking this place out if you're in the area! read more

This is not my first review for Decent People but the first negative review. I hate writing negative reviews but today needed to be done. I frequent this restaurant especially being that it's in my neighborhood and I believe in supporting local establishments. It was easily one of my favorite restaurants. I've told many people about it and they came. It was a fun meetup spot for my friends and I being there's a variety with the beer wall. However today totally changed that for me and it unfortunately is a place that has lost my business. I usually get the steak they changed it and butterfly it now but I was unaware which is fine however it caused my usual medium well to be overly done so I asked if it could be remade The chicken breasts ate another go to for us and they were extremely dry so asked for something else. Our waitress was extremely rude whereas we were polite in response and making them aware of the issue. I know things happen we all have good cooking days and not so good but to have a waitress cause a scene and be loud with us is totally unnecessary. Talking rudely as she walked away from us. Everything was awesome! So glad we found this gem close to our new home. Menu was exciting, we couldn't make up our minds on what to eat. Ty, our server (pinky lol) made our time enjoyable and comfortable. He walked us through everything. Hubby and I both had worked in restaurants (back in the day when customer service was on point) and he exceeded our expectations! So out shopping on the way back home, hubby challenged me to find a place we had not visited. Passing through the area, this was just 2.7 miles out of our way. Quick bite the back on the road. We were greeted when we arrived , offered menus at the register, and the nervous hostest immediately asked if we were having drinks. Self-serve beer was available on the beer wall and sold per ounce. Mention waa made of the card used. They would hold my credit card to and start a tab and make sure my beer tab was paid. This was separate from our meals. We were told to sit anywhere. Hubby found a seat, our waitress quickly said her name, and we were offered drinks. They arrived, and we placed our meal order. Appetizers wings , hubby grilled cheese meal came out at the same time. 2 mins later, my dry cheeseburger came out. There is no ambiance, just beer, food drinks, and dark lighting. No pickles for burgers. We ate. I visited the self serve beers twice. We were presented a check for $102. Beer charges of $43. Hubby inquired about it the charge for just 2 half glasses 1 mostly foam. Nervous hostest had no clue. Said she would call over our waitress. Glitch in the system. So now am waiting to see if the $10 charge on my card will drop off since she placed it on the meal bill. Decent people is a pass for me. read more

Nothing is Decent about this place. Poor service, poor food and $10 beers... on game nights, it's so loud you cannot have any conversation.

Honestly one of the worst experiences my husband and I have had in a long time. The entire place felt miserable and uncomfortable from the moment we walked in. We were literally the ONLY customers in the restaurant, yet the man cooking the food and taking our order still had a rude attitude the entire time for absolutely no reason.. Assuming that's also the owner. The bacon wrapped jalapeños were awful! OVERLOADED with seeds to the point where it caused a horrible reaction afterward (it's common practice to remove most of the seeds), and parts of the food even seemed undercooked. There's really no excuse for low quality food when we were the only patrons there. Between the bad food and the terrible customer service, the whole experience felt careless and unprofessional. It honestly felt like we were inconveniencing them just by being there. We came in hoping to support a local business and left regretting spending a dime. Service is great, Lauren was attentive and quick. The layout is similar to other tap houses uses the card system on each tap. Easy enough. Several selections makes it kind of cool Appetizer was stuffed jalapeños. The bacon was think but overcooked and crunchy instead of soft and flavorful. The jalapeño was raw I was expecting some cook on them but my bad. The filling was nice though. They are big. I liked them but wanted to like them more. I did eat all four by myself so they weren't that bad. Grilled cheese sandwich with brisket was legit. This was super tasty. Loved the flavor and the mix. That alone is worth a return visit. My husband and I are staying for the week, up from NC, while he teaches in Portsmouth for work. We checked into the Marriott and upon scouting for a good dinner spot, found Decent People here on Yelp. Being big fans of burgers and beer, we were game after seeing another Yelper's photo of the Black & Blue Burger. Upon arriving, we were promptly greeted at the door by 3 people, who also asked if we wanted a beer card. We had grand fun looking at all the awesome array of local breweries and he chose our fave Chesapeake brewery (Yay for Big Ugly!) and I went with Oozlefinch. They never disappoint either! The menu was filled with all kinds of tasty choices and we quickly agreed that the Black & Blue Burger was sticking with us. We decided to split the burger and upgraded from fries or chips to roasted Brussel Sprouts. That was a great decision! We also split a dozen smoked wings, half original Buffalo and half Sweet Thai Chili. The wings arrived with our burger, which was fine since we were sharing our choices. They weren't over-sauced which I appreciated, the blue cheese dressing was fresh and delicious, filled with lots of real blue cheese crumbles. You could really taste the smokiness of the wing and we enjoyed that greatly. The burger did not disappoint in any way. Also loaded with a ton of fresh blue cheese crumbles, it was built on a sturdy bun, had lacy onion straws, lettuce and tomato. The burger didn't need anything else on it and sharing it was the perfect amount of food. Our server was attentive and personable and was eager to help me choose a beer when we first looked. Prices were super reasonable and we loved the relaxed atmosphere and vibe. It was quiet when we arrived but it was 4pm on a Sunday; they assured us that it definitely picks up on other nights and especially on Trivia night. Come early! Located in North Suffolk, Decent People is a restaurant with plenty of craft beer options on tap. They also have a decent food menu! During a recent visit with a few of my sailors, I was able to try two items from their menu: their brisket grilled cheese and the classic root beer float. 3 words: Brisket Grilled Cheese Just let that sink in for a minute... I LOVE brisket. I LOVE grilled cheese sandwiches. Together? Sounds like a culinary orgasm of epic levels! :D And it definitely didn't disappoint! Juicy and very flavorful brisket, gooey white cheddar cheese on some sourdough bread. Some pretty good stuff. Definitely one of the best grilled cheeses I've had in my time in Hampton Roads. Only thing I was missing though, I wish there was an option to add some grilled onions in the sandwich. I feel like that would be a nice add-on and may even enhance the flavors of the other ingredients in the sandwich. Another thing that surprised me; I've never had a proper root beer float before...lol I guess I just never saw the need to add a big dollop of ice cream to a glass of root beer. The root beer float at Decent People is friggin HUGE. I see now what I've been missing out on! This was a great suggestion by one of my supervisors in my division. I must have written this review in my head. Because I was so excited to visit here - and it's been about three times now since I visited and noticed, no review from me - I am so so sorry!! This place is awesome!!! The beer selection - I think it's good! I am not a beer drinker, but to have all these selections, it must be something to it. Yay!!!! I can play too!!! So yeah, you get a white card you load money or points to and use it every time you want to pour a sip (use a new glass every time). How fun!!!?? I remember when I first visited, I thought this was the neatest concept ever! Our first visit, we walked in on a Saturday night and it was packed. We ended up seeing friends we knew and sat next to them. The food that night was really good or we were really hungry. You will have to check out the pictures, because I am not sure what we ate. But it must have been good because we returned a second time. Well maybe it's only been twice visited and not three. Nevertheless, our last visit we visited on a Sunday early afternoon, the day before Valentines Day. The vibe was definitely mellow. Much different than our Saturday night visit. Both times, our waitress was pleasant and super informative. I do recall, the food tasting fresh, as if it's all made to order. I loved the fries! And the standout meal was grilled brisket sandwich my husbae ordered. Very very good! While this place has plenty of beer choices, they also have a full bar so liquor is available too. You'll definitely enjoy yourself at Decent People Taproom whether you like beer or not. I don't like beer at all, and I was pleasantly surprised at how good the food was because I was expecting average bar food. The food was definitely better than average, but almost each item was missing just something small to take it from good to great- the elote was regular corn on the cob with toppings, but roasted corn and lime would've made it great; I would've loved pickles on the brisket sandwich; the chips don't have to be housemade, but take them out of the bag and plate them. The food was so good that I really just wanted that little bit extra to make it fantastic. Overall, really great experience and we'll be back again for sure. read more

Went here on an afternoon, not very busy seated right away. The burgers are awesome. I've never had so much blue cheese on a hamburger as this place. I absolutely loved it for drinks. You decide what you want from a wall of tabs using a card that charges you buy the ounce. This is where it can get really expensive those ounces add up and you can spend 20 bucks on food and 40 bucks and drink really quick and not have a buzz. I've been here a few times. This will be the most heartfelt rating I'll ever give. First - we love this place. The dog friendly staff and patio make this place our go-to place for bringing our dog. When facilities embrace allowing customers to bring their furbabies, it gives people another place to go with their loved ones. You add the fact that you get beer and great food - I don't see where the issue is. The menu and the beer rotate out along with the season and it's just badass. Because we loved this place so much, this was the last place we had dinner with our beloved Daisy. She loved coming here and the staff showed it. The owner should read this. I couldn't imagine not knowing how your customers are being treated. The server should have been at our table more than she did. We had four couples. She should have asked us for drinks within the first ten minutes we arrived. She should have asked us if we needed refills. On a diet, I had water but ran out and got my son's unused water. She served appetizers and did not pass out napkins. When she served food, she should have asked how our food was and if there was anything else we needed. My friend's food was a hamburger that was so bloody he ate half when he ordered it medium well. The server should know that if you don't have an item on the menu, tell the customer. I ordered an iceberg wedge salad. What I was served was a raw wedge of cabbage. Do people eat large wedges of raw cabbage with dressing?? When I got my hamburger it was not wrapped in lettuce, it came wrapped in a raw piece of cabbage. The plates and cups were not taken off the table until one of us started placing plates on the table next to us. The guy behind the register sat there and did not help the server. I am not going to return to this place but the owner should definitely get the problems corrected or change the staff. read more
