I loved this restaurant but unfortunately they just rearranged the layout and it really kills the vibe. Booths were replaced by church pews and some ugly chairs. Who took over the look of this place should be replaced immediately. This new look and feel has ruined this place for me. read more

Pretty cool spot! The place was hopping at around 5:15 on Saturday, both the bar and dining room. The place is very casual, yet has a nostalgic historic charm. I will say the tables are tiny and it feels a little cramped in the dining room- we kept dropping our silverware. The fried crab ball app was divine! I would love to go back and just have an order of those and some beer. Mom also enjoyed her peeled shrimp plate. I wasn't so thrilled with the capellini pasta. It has the option of marinara or alfredo sauce. Not wanting the heaviness of a cream-based sauce the night before a race I ordered the former but our server suggested I not get it because it's not good- that was weird. She suggested olive oil with herbs. It was ok. Not great for $14. Service was still friendly and prompt given the crowds! read more

We were expecting much more. The food was lackluster at best. We had to ask the manager to bring plates for the appetizers. The server was slow and seemed to be very overwhelmed. They brought out half the food then we had to ask where the other half was. When we did get food it was luke warm. The manager was accomodating to the kid that didnt like her food but that was the best part. The part i want to stress is that for a Brewing company they didnt have most of the beer on the menu unless you wanted a bottle of domestic beer. Excellent food and service! Had the mozzarella sticks which are amazing (that cheese pull) and a beer flight which would recommend all of them. Yes, I have to agree with a whole bunch of others in loving this place. The service was excellent and the ambiance was eclectic and fun. Only problem was a bit of a long wait but it was a Saturday night and we did have a party of 5. We made the best of it with some very tasty craft beers brewed by this restaurant. Overall, totally exceptional in every way. When we got seated at the dining area, we ordered a slew of appetizers and everything that was ordered got devoured quickly. My favourites were the buffalo cauliflower, fried pickles and the fried green tomatoes!!! Delicious!!! For dinner, the stand-outs were definitely the peeled shrimps, we had it cajun style and fried. Wow!!! The spaghetti meatballs were also awesome. To top it off, our server Amy was most helpful, patient and friendly. While visiting Historic Smithfield we walked along the shops and came to the Wharf Hill Brewing Company. We decided to stop in and share some appetizers as everyone was a tad hungry and we had reservations for dinner later in the day. We had to wait to be seated as there were seven of us and it was just after lunch time. There is a bar area when you first enter, and then a dining area with tables in the next room. We ordered a few different appetizers to share for the table. We at first were told they were out of the Smoked Salmon Spread, but luckily for us, they found that they did indeed have some to serve. The spread was very good and served with a side of pita chips that appeared to have been deep fried. They were so good that we almost ran out of them prior to the dip as people were just eating them by themselves. Dip was served with a slice of Gouda cheese on top, it was semi melted and a tad bit difficult to slice through to get to the dip. I didn't care for it with the fish, but others did like it. My youngest had the stuffed button mushrooms and really enjoyed them. One of the younger ones had the Caesar Salad, and the other had a kid's meal of fried shrimp with sugar snap peas. Hubby had the pork rinds which appeared to have been poured out of a bag you buy at the grocery store (the menu states they are home made, but they truly did not taste nor look like home made). Wonderfully delicious spot for burgers and wings in historic Smithfield. Upon walking in you are taken back to the 1800s in this authentically restored restaurant space. The wood moldings alone will have you drooling if you care for historic architecture. But when it comes to the food, I definitely recommend starting with the wings and fried pickles. Sadly we were so hungry I didn't even have time to snap a picture of the appetizers before they disappeared. The wings were some of the best I have ever had, we ordered Naked wings with Buffalo sauce and they were FANTASTIC. The fried pickles were wedges and not slices, but they were equally amazing. Perfectly crunchy and delicious. For entrees we ordered the Mushroom Swiss Burger, Reuben Sandwich, and Volcano Burger. The Mushroom Swiss Burger was good, very large in size and the mushrooms were sautéed perfectly. The Reuben Sandwich was AMAZINGGGG, the corn beef was so full of flavor and the bread was grilled to a nice crisp, almost like a grilled cheese. It was so delicious it was definitely my favorite of the entrees. The Volcano Burger, while amazingly delicious, is pretty hard to eat. It's GARGANTUAN! Bacon, fried jalapeños, melted beer cheese, oh goodness it's fantastic. Just don't expect to be able to pick it up and eat it with your hands. Prepare to get messy with this one. But worth it. Each burger or sandwich we ordered came with fries and the fries were amazing! Fried to the perfect crunch! Went to lunch with a friend here and it was so nice. The service was great, very friendly and quick. He constantly came to check on us and refill our drinks. I got the chicken pot pie and it was delicious and a good sized portion for me. The biscuit top to it was nice and flaky. My friend got the chicken Parmesan and ate every late bite. She loved it and if she had room for more would probably have ordered another to go. We got the loaded fries appetizer and man was it filling, and no little bacon bits. This place is good, like surprisingly good! I would of been happy with a cold beer and some mediocre food. But instead I got excellent microbrews with awesome food. I had the wings and mushrooms. The mushrooms were good but not great, but the wings were really amazing!! They were cooked perfectly, breaded with sauce on. The breading was crispy and crunchy and held up under the sauce. The sauce was amazing, just enough heat to feel it but I was still able to enjoy it and taste everything else. It started sweet and moved to hot, I'm still licking my lips trying to get the last bit. They seem like they just opened which explains the spacey GM but I think they'll learn. I'm only in town for a week but this is by far my best choice and I'll be back...this week. read more

After a nice stroll through downtown Smithfield, we stopped into the brewery restaurant that several people mentioned. Portions and prices were reasonable; service was okay and friendly. The decor was interesting, lots of stories behind things which I enjoy; personable. The food was okay - we tried the onion rings as was suggested and they were fresh, crispy and plentiful...but they really lacked flavor. The same I found with the fried green tomatoes. They are fresh and well cooked, but bland. Each are served with a remoulade to help give some flavor, but I think the batter and veg could have used some salt and seasoning. We ordered a grilled cheese sandwich and crab cake sandwich - the crab was tasty. Overall I would come back, but more to try the next beer they're brewing. We tried the only beer brewed there at the restaurant and I believe it was called the Isle of Wheat (thick and cloudy, but pleasant). read more

I don't claim to be a big fan of se Virginia. Customer service typically is weak and food is run of the mill in most places ava to top it off there it's the high food tax. Wharf hill is a definite exception! I went here on a tues evening for the prime rib special. The place is very quaint and has a bright friendly warm atmosphere. Lee, the proprietor, was at the bar and very attentive to everyone's needs. I had the prime rib, blackened and rare. I good choice cut it seemed. Cooked sugar snap peas were very good. The red potatoes wee good but a bit dry. The beer selection is excellent ads I even got me first, on the house, as a thank you for serving my country. Nice:) I tried the peanut butter chocolate pie. I really love the old school feel this place has- it is really reminiscent of some areas in downtown Richmond. The beer is good (according to my husband) and the staff is really friendly. As far as the Food goes there are some hits and misses.The chicken sandwich can be dry (it needs sauce!) and the meatloaf also was dry. This place is great! If I lived closer, I would frequent this restaurant! Food - OMG everything was delicious. Onion rings were huge and they use panko breaking! Fried tomatoes were just right! Those are usually not something I'd try, but I did. And I am officially a fan! ......annnnd the burger. Goodness gracious!y cheeseburger came out perfect... seasoned very well, cooked just right to my liking (medium) and the portion was great! And the wings!!! GET THE WINGS!
