We had an outing in Smithfield today and decided to try Wharf Hill since it has decent reviews and looked enticing. We walked in right as they opened (11:30am) and were sat immediately by the hostess. We were given a small 2 top in the main dining area. Our server was very nice, didn't check on us too little or too much. We ordered pretzel bites with queso as an appetizer. It was good but would've liked a bigger portion. The queso was really good. My boyfriend ordered the CBR Wrap with Onion Rings and I ordered the shrimp entree (I chose blackened shrimp rather than fried) with onion rings. It took a little while for the food to come out but it seemed like the kitchen was maybe having some problems because everybody in our room got their food at just about the same time despite ordering separately. The shrimp were a little small but decently priced considering how much seafood costs has gone up. The onion rings were GIGANTIC. One was as big as my hand. The breading could've used a little more seasoning but overall everything tasted great and we took leftovers home. Our server left us a nice thank you note and we tipped 20% !! read more

In my review of Historic Downtown Smithfield ( https://www.yelp.com/biz/historic-downtown-smithfield-smithfield ), I mentioned that a brew pub was coming. Well it has arrived (some time ago) and this is it. But not until recently did I have a chance to check it out, and I'm glad I did. It's quite an interesting place. The first thing that caught my eye is all the angles and steps. The Wharf Hill Brewing Co. is located on a rather steep hill, that is also Main St., that leads down to the Pagan River. It's also in a large building built on said hill. As such, the various floors in the building are not at the same level, so you must walk up or down a small flight of stairs to move between the sections of the building. Rather interesting. We were a group of about 8, and were seated in the dinning room "up hill" from the bar. I think it's called the SINCLAIR ROOM. As the bar was jamming, I appreciated the respite from the noise in this slightly more secluded location. The menu is rather eclectic, with daily specials. Being close to the River inspired me to go fish (haddock) and chips. I went fried, though blackened and grilled are also options. I thought it was quite good. Oh my gosh. You guys... this place is fantastic. The inside of the restaurant is crazy cool with unique touches of old and new, rustic and modern, and everything you'd want around you while eating hands down the best burgers in town. I'd like to tell you more about the mozzarella sticks, but I'm afraid my words wouldn't do them Justice. These fried cheese sticks of perfection look and taste like they were prepared in Heaven above and carefully dropped down below to be politely and professionally delivered straight to your table. Holy goodness in every hot, stringy cheesy bite. I could eat just an order of these alone and be insanely happy. Not sure I went to the same restaurant as everyone else leaving a review. 3.5 stars The Country Ham Rolls we had as appetizer were almost inedible. The rolls were fine, but the ham had streaks of fat in it that made chewing a big chore. Too salty also. The Pulled Pork BBQ sandwich was ok. Nothing special. This is such a wonderful spot to grab a drink and bite to eat when exploring Smithfield. It is located down the hill in historic Smithfield where there is lots of historic houses and neat things to see. Seriously the area is so cute! The inside of the restaurant is filled with all kinds of artifacts from the original buildings in the town. For example the benches were old church pews and a mirror on the wall was from an old hotel. I thought that was super neat and really special. When it came to ordering I got their IPA for my drink. It was flavorful and I enjoyed it. We order the won tons for an appetizer which were filled with bbq and came with bbq dipping sauce. These were good but I wouldn't order them again because they just weren't really my style. I ordered the shrimp po boy with fried green tomatoes for my mine and was very happy when it came. The shrimp were perfectly seasoned and the sandwich had a nice spicy sauce and fresh herbs that complimented the blackened shrimp well. The fried green tomatoes were perfectly tart and battered nicely. I ended up taking half of my meal home because I was already so full. Overall this spot was a win in my book. read more

This place is really good. The interior and exterior is rustic old town Smithfield and its charming. The food is flavorful and the menus options are exciting. Not alot of parking. I wouldn't recommend a big, big party here unless your renting out the extra room. We are just starting to travel the area to local breweries. This one is in Smithfield. According to my husband the Irish Red Ale larger was excellent. We decided to eat late lunch and it didn't disappoint. U got the pretzel bites just to take edge off. You were so close to a 5, Wharf Hill Brewing Company (WHBC)! So close! After my first visit less than two weeks ago, I was flying high. The service provided by Noel was impeccable; the food was sensational; and the atmosphere was lodge turned tavern equals comfortable perfection. So, what happened, you say? Well, it's all about location, location, location. Maybe I should start over... During my first visit at WHBC, I arrived promptly at 11:30 a.m., but there were already customers sitting at tables. I guess people were impatient--that's a good sign, right? I picked my table by the window in the main dining room. I picked that table because of the natural lighting for taking pictures, but it turned out to be a quieter, more spacious area. Remember that--it's important. I ordered the Dark Hollow Double Stout on tap and it was delicious. They do offer 1/2 pints, which is the perfect amount during lunch. I also ordered the Shrimp Po'Boy and a salad instead of fries. The salad was an extra $3.00 but seemed a bit pricey for me. (For the same price, I would highly recommend getting the Fisherman's Stew, but I'll get into that later.) The sandwich, however, was wonderful. I'm not even a fan of shrimp, but these were cooked to perfection. The bread was soft enough without cutting your mouth and the huge fried shrimp were crunchy and delicious. The star of the meal was the cilantro rémoulade. Every bite of that Po'Boy made me smile. So much so, that I couldn't stop thinking about it the next few days. So, today, I decided to take my son to WHBC. When we walked in, I immediately noticed that *my* table was being taken, and so was the other table by the window. She seated us along a wall of two-seaters. These tables and chairs were quite close to one another. When someone arrived behind me, I had to push myself as close as I could to my table and they still ended up bumping into me as they sat. That's just too close for me. I also noticed how loud it got in there especially with the people next to us. Every time servers walked by, I felt like I had to keep moving my arms out of the way. I wanted my window table oasis again! My son order the Obligatory Burger with fries and I got the Crab Cake Sandwich (broiled) with Fisherman's Stew (instead of fries, I added the stew for $3.00). According to my teen, he said the burger was okay, but salty compared to most burgers. I took a bite and thought it was well seasoned. The fries were just okay--not bad, but not my favorite. My Crab Cake Sandwich was very good (I opted for rémoulade), but I do prefer lump crab cakes. That doesn't stop me from devouring every morsel and made my taste buds happy. The crown jewel today, though, was the Fisherman's Stew. Man oh man! I'm not a seafood lover period (except crab and lobster), but I still wanted to try it. I am so glad I did! The flavor was wonderful, and didn't taste "fishy" at all. Some of you might not like that, but I loved it; I don't want to taste the ocean when I eat. Now you can see my dilemma. I love WHBC, but I definitely had two different experiences when it comes to the atmosphere. My recommendation would be either get a table by the window, sit at one of the booths, or try sitting in the bar area if it's lunch time--it seemed quieter over there. Oh! And one more thing. It's very odd when you walk in the door. It is cramped and there is no lobby area. The first time I visited, I looked around at the bar trying to figure out what to do. Then I spotted the servers in the dining room trying to catch my eye. I know it's difficult because of the set up in that old building, but it's weird and somewhat unwelcoming when you walk inside. With all of that aside, I am very impressed with WHBC, especially with how short the amount of time they have been open. There were no problems with my food or the service--they get huge points for both of those. And I love the interior. I will definitely--most definitely--return. I just need to make sure I arrive before anyone else so that I can grab my window table oasis. 4.5 stars read more

I've dined (and drank) at Wharf Hill a couple dozen times since it opened. It is a popular place with the locals as there is nothing else like Wharf Hill Brewing Co. within a 20 or 30 mile radius! Parking out front is a hoot, if you can find a spot with fairly-steep downhill angled-in parking. I usually opt to find a spot on Main Street if stopping in for dinner because parking out front - and in the small lot at the bottom of the hill - is taken. On recent visits, I'd say that the hostess could use more training. There was no one at the front entrance for several minutes when we first arrived. There were no tables available but she did not know the status of seating available in the bar. On another visit, the restaurant was not as busy but the hostess had to leave us at the entrance to ask her manager where she was allowed to seat us. Shouldn't she know that already? Once seated, I've always found our servers to be personable, knowledgable, and efficient. They have an excellent selection on the menu and Gluten-free options are clearly marked. It's not "fine dining" but, for what they try to be, I give them five stars for the food, even if the food can be a bit slow coming out of the kitchen. Their in-house brews are below average, in my opinion. I'd rate their beers at 2-1/2 stars. Now I opt for one of their guest taps if I am going for a draft beer. On the other hand, their selection of canned and bottled beers is very impressive for a craft brewery. As long as the quality if the food is maintained, I plan to continue at WHBC as a regular patron. read more

The four of us started off by splitting two appetizers - fried green tomatoes & fried pickles - they both were absolutely delicious! As far as beer, I first ordered a Lil' Heaven Session IPA by Two Roads Brewing Company (personally would rate it 3.25 out 5) and my fiancée ordered the Spotswoods Revenge by Wharf Hill Brewing Company - (would personally rate 4.5 out 5). Went during lunch time for wife's Birthday and it was great! We each had a pint, me a brown ale brewed on premises and wife a chocolate stout on tap. The food tasted fantastic and portions more than enough. For dessert the bread pudding was dense and spicy and an Oreo chocolate cake for the missus who happily finished it with little help from me. Stopped here after exploring the Main Street area of Smithfield with my mother. We were visiting from Massachusetts. Loved the interior- very different inside. We both got the chicken pot pie and onion rings and I got a side order of fried green tomatoes as we don't have those back home. The chicken pot pie was delicious. The onion rings were massive and tasty. I haven't had fried green tomatoes since a trip to Savannah in 2013 and they were also delicious. Prices were very reasonable. My husband and I went to visit Wharf Hill for the first time this past Saturday afternoon. They were pretty busy so we opted to sit at the bar. We tried their hefeweizen that was on tap, it was delicious. For lunch I had the chicken savoy-blackened, it came with the butter rice and sautéed mushrooms. We came here for a birthday dinner last weekend and let me tell you.. the treatment you get here is amazing! We had a private room set up for about 30 people. All the employees went out of their way to accommodate all the guests. The Menu: They had a very good selection of beers and wine. They had a full dinner menu that comprised of fried green tomatoes, fried pickles, fish, steak, chicken, salads, & other yummy fare. I had a side salad with their balsamic vinaigrette and it was probably the most tastiest I've ever had! I chose the airline chicken in tarragon cream sauce and to be honest, it wasn't for me. My 4.5 year old had the grilled cheese and French fries. This was the best kid platter I've ever had! Sunny ordered the Smithfield carbonara.. which was very delicious as well. What really blew me away.. was that we had a 3 tier cake and had no idea how to cut it. One of the employees actually took her time to cut it, plate it, & just take care of the whole thing! Sorry I have to rate like this cause I really love eating at the Wharf. Our Friday night meal was a hot (cold) mess I took in considering it was a pick up. We order fish and chips, fried green tomatoes with a side salad. I must say the salad was the best of this meal. In the restaurant you get a sauce with the fried tomatoes no sauce tomatoes was limp thin and not very tasty yuk. The haddock fish was sooooo dry not even the tartar sauce didn't help. Fried so hard I got cuts in the top of my mouth. Chips cold and some was hard some was limp. For $65 bill I expected better. Sorry Wharf Hill you guys dropped the ball. It will be awhile until I can get husband to return. Need better take out care. read more

Fun place, friendly service, excellent food and beers on tap! Will come back to Smithfield just for a fun brunch again and an overnight at Smithfield Station. One issue- where we were in the restaurant you could not see the small chalkboard list of beers on tap so the IPA that was recommended ended up being 9.5% alcohol and was served in 22oz English pint glasses. Ended up ruining our trip since we don't normally drink that much and ended up being ill. You really need to alert diners if you are serving beer this strong!
