It's been a while since I've been to What a Bagel, and I don't even know if I've ever dined in before. Usually, my friends and family would get takeout bagels for me, and I've always enjoyed them. But today, I decided to treat myself to one of their steak bagel sandwiches, and it was really good! It had a solid sear on the steak with a fluffy egg layer. Though it did take about 10 minutes or so to be ready, I did some work while waiting, as I was in between meetings Downtown and didn't feel like hitting up a café now that I was already at this stop. The Spadina location was quite spacious, though there was music playing in the background, so I wouldn't say it's super quiet or easy to find a plug for extended work. However, for a short work session, it's not bad, especially since it's not too busy in the middle of the weekday. Disclaimer: I'm not Canadian but I LOVE bagels and this was my first visit. I enjoyed their toasted marble bagel. To be honest, their plain cream cheese wasn't my favorite and I was hoping it'd be fluffier, but that's just my preference so can't complain. I really enjoyed the fresh juices and smoothie options too - I wanted to try them all, but went with the classic OJ. The coffee was good - nothing to write home about. The people who helped me (I had about three workers help) were very kind. In particular, since I was visiting, I wanted to take several home and he carefully packaged them up for me (although, they ended up getting completely smushed in my carry on - #WorthIt). They also had pastries but I wasn't interested in those - your typical croissant, cookies, etc. The ambiance was just a typical shop/deli. I asked what jam they have 3 times, 1st time was ignored, 2nd time he asked me to check the paper in front which only has cream cheese flavours, 3rd time he took the time finally to tell me only strawberry flavour. This is just a bagel review You can get half a dozen bagels for $5.25 total which is a very good price for fresh and good quality bagels. The bagels were big with a barely-there bagel hole (honestly this can be a controversial topic among bagel aficionados but I actually don't mind because usually all the cream cheese comes out of the hole! anyways..) and airy and fluffy. I got the everything bagels and they had a good amount of topping (mostly sesame and poppy seeds) on them and they tasted pretty good even without any cream cheese. And if there is multiple stations, wouldn't the food be made quicker since there are dedicated sandwich makers? Clearly the manager needs training on customer service skills because this was ridiculous. He would not discount our bill. Our coffees had been sitting on the table empty long before we got our food. Delicious bagels that I have on good authority are nearly as good as the ones in New York. Their bagels have the perfect consistency, not too dense and a bit chewy. I recommend the marble rye with one of their fresh cream cheeses! It's a little bit disorganized in there and you have to watch for crowding occasionally but it's worth it. We stumbled upon What a Bagel on Labour Day, when everything else in the neighbourhood was pretty much closed. The patio initially drew my attention, even though I thought it belonged to the place next door. With hesitation, we decided to have brunch here--and I'm glad we did. This location has a tiny kitchen which servers "diner-style" dishes. Indoors, there are only several tables to sit and I imagine that in the winter those spots fill up fairly quickly. The patio on the other hand had plenty of tables. So if you're in the mood for some house-made Challah and maybe a mimosa--this is a good place to start. I ordered the Beet It Salad, while lunch date ordered a Latke with a poached egg and salad. Now, the food was really nothing special--typical diner eats. I am, however, impressed by the generous portions and the availability of healthy options on the menu. The Latke was a sad interpretation, it's definitely more of a hash brown. My go to weekend morning brunch spot whenever I am spending Saturday's downtown. The Spadina location has been very consistent with their service and quality for years now. I don't even mind waiting in line during the summer months because of how good they are. Having tried many of their sandwiches over the years, I've settled on the two signature sandwiches that I go back and forth with "The West Coast" & "The East Coast". Probably because I am a hip-hop head and it reminds of me the 90's legends of Biggie and Tupac's rivalry. The one thing I will say is that you can't leave without buying some amazing bread with you.
