We're early in our Manners 1 training, but I see a lot of potential here. Both trainers I've met so far...Asheley for the initial evaluation and Laura for the training...are friendly, knowledgeable, helpful, and able to answer questions. The facility is large and very open, and they have a strict mask policy, which makes me feel much more comfortable being there. Lots of course options for training. The workbook provided is helpful, as are the links to online training to refresh everything I forgot by the time I got home. Really looking forward to the rest of the Manners 1 sessions and already planning to sign my dog up for Manners 2. read more

What a great facility! I used to be in the training world and when I was this facility and it's trainers took the cake. I now work in vetmed and this is still the place I refer clients when they ask about anything from behavior problems to basic puppy training. The owner is an incredibly amazing person with compassion for what she does and animals that goes far and wide! We sure do love this place and have nothing but good things to say. We started off with 2 of the pre-puppy classes prior to CoVid and then did both Manners 1 and Manners 2. We had two different teachers for our Bernedoodle for Manners 1 & 2. Laura was an awesome teacher and the takeaways from both classes are still helping Beckham out today. We work with him daily bc of what they taught us. I mean some days are better than others but he's coming up on 9 months old so he is still learning. lol But all in all we were very pleased and satisfied with his progress and what he learned at WAGD. We love this facility. We discovered it only 4 or 5 months ago and already each of our four dogs has taken at least one class and learned so much. We've taken each of the 3 Manners classes, a few Focus sessions, Nose Work 101, Agility Foundations, and the Tricks classes. Each instructor and trainer was great at communicating information and giving specific attention and instructions. Each teacher has their own style but overall we've been really pleased with the curriculum and execution of each class. The facility is always really clean. Our corgi-shepherd mix used to be such a pain. He's always been very smart but so mischievous and headstrong. We couldn't take him out in public because he was such a menace. He's completed Manners and Tricks classes and is a much more mature and decent dog. He can walk off leash, has great call return, and knows more than twenty tricks. He's training to be a therapy dog soon. Our pomeranian husky is all energy and drive. Manners and Agility has done her wonders and she looks forward to going to "school". I didn't realize that she was so bored and that's why she was acting out. I learn just as much if not more what my dogs are learning. An hour here exhausts her way more than a full day at the park. Our pit lab is our youngest and really, really shy. She's scared of everything. She's working through the three Manners classes and her confidence is building and she's learning that being outside of the house and without her pack doesn't totally suck. I wanted to put her in Agility but decided not to off the recommendation from one of the trainers. They're really great about seeing each dog's potential and guiding you towards what classes or training to move towards depending on what your personal goals are for each dog. Our littlest and easiest dog is in nose work and I don't think she quite gets it but I'm having fun. An hour of sniffing and she's ready for a nice long nap. Overall, I'm more than satisfied with this facility and each instructor. Each of our dogs has exceeded my expectations of what they were capable of. The retail store is always well stocked and the front desk is really helpful with recommendations and answering questions. I reccomend WAGD to anyone with a dog and will definitely be coming back here. read more

I rarely write negative reviews, because positive reviews are just easier and more pleasant to write. My husband and I were trying to enroll our puppy into the Agility class. Our puppy has been through several puppy training programs and he has been thoroughly socialized at just 8 months. We did this because he is an aggressive breed. Moreover, he was used to build another facility's puppy training program. When I first called the WAGD, the lady I spoke with said he has to go through the Readiness Class, to see if he still needed to take their Manners 1 and Manners 2 classes, which are needed, if a puppy hasn't received any training. I told her about all the puppy programs he has been through, but since all puppies have to take the class, we enrolled him. The class was a total waste of time. Though he was the most calm puppy and passed all of their tests, they still deemed he had to go into Manners 1. If he passed all of their tests, why would he need to go to both Manners 1 and 2 classes? This led us to believe this business just wants your money. Needless to say, we will not be enrolling our puppy, and wouldn't recommend this place, unless your dog truly need Manners 1 and Manners 2 classes. read more

I sent in a review a few months ago, and know I am probably tooting the horn too much, but wanted to update with more grand news by way of another story about my Aussie, Bowie. It has been a few weeks since our last set of lessons ended, and we have not signed up for a new lesson yet because cash is tight right now. But back to the story. Bowie had been with me all day on a work visit to Oklahoma. On the way back I got a fried chicken bucket for the family for dinner. There was no shortage of food and snack breaks for Bowie during the trip, but with the smell of chicken in his nose he acted like I starved him all day. We made plates and had them on the counter while rounding up the family and in a split second Bowie had raised up on the counter and grabbed a big, juicy chicken breast. In another split second he had scurried away, eaten the skin, and was working on the rest. My wife screeched partly because it was her chicken that he was chowing on, but mostly because she was frightened about him eating the bones. She was too freaked out to use the command, but having kept him from eating any manner of debris while on walks, I calmly but firmly said, "Leave it." A large, juicy chicken breast, can you imagine, but what did he do? Immediately dropped the chicken and looked at me. Simply amazing! What A Great Dog! (pun intended) I wondered how things would go if we were not still in the weekly lessons, but it stuck. Can't wait for things to brighten financially so we can get back and go further. Secondly, I had several friends and family tell me that the only way to get him under control was to use a shock collar. I was dead set against using that method and want all of you to know that we are doing fine using traditional conditioning. read more

I tried enrolling my puppy in their Manners class and they said he wasn't a good fit, just yet, because he lacks focus and is too excited. So they suggested private lessons and told me that once he gets the green light from the private lessons then he could enroll in the Manners class. After 4 private lessons, they told me that he's not a candidate for the manners class. Wasted time! I was given false hope and spent a few hundred dollars for Diddley squat. They should have told me that private lessons do not guarantee enrollment to the Manners class. The private training was pointless and was not beneficial because there was no plan. The trainer would ask me, what do you want to work on today. Me: "I don't know, I'm just trying to get him into the manners class". Trainer: okay, well let's work on this today. These were not the lessons I was looking for... I felt like the trainer was just picking random things to work on. Not a place I'd recommend for private training, but if you can get into the manners class, then you'll be good. read more

Since my last review...I've been going to WAGD! on at least a weekly basis. We added a labrador puppy to the family in July 2012, and WAGD! was ESSENTIAL in helping us along the way. I got great advice from owner/trainer Maureen on helping both our pups get along at home. Our new addition has gone through puppy class, intermediate class (where he earned an AKC Canine Good Citizen certificate), a fun clicker/tricks class, and he starts his very first agility class this week! I'm also still taking agility classes with our first pup, and WAGD! has been a great support to us in beginning to compete at AKC agility trials. Our agility coach, Jody, is AMAZING! We were pretty successful at our first trial last November and our second trial is coming up this weekend! That part I said in my first review about it being so good you just want to keep going back (over a year ago!!!) rings so true! The people that work at WAGD! and all the other folks that train with their pups at WAGD! really make it a great community. If you're looking for basic training, puppy training, help with problems, beginning or advancing in an array of competitive dog sports/activities (agility, rally, competitive obedience, treibball, nose work, flyball) then WAGD! is for you. They change the course each day for the different training levels. A cool new feature is video! They have installed a large LCD and security cameras. The video is on a 3 minute delay so you can watch yourself and get the best feedback. We've got 2 huskies who are ready to get their certificates. My friend and I signed up together, she went first and recommended not to go, I gave them the benefit of doubt, and it turned out to be worse than what she stated. My dog and I sat in class for less than 5 minutes and of course my dog was excited and barked quiet a bit- instead of helping me calm him down, the trainer told me to go see front desk for a private class. The whole point of coming to this place is to train my dog- but the trainers didn't seem to care. She was rude! Never coming back here, there is much better places to get your dog trained. We have now completed the Manners II class. Jury is out on this. I know we learned some things but mostly, the dog got older and the previous classes were very good. I enrolled in this because the teacher we had for Manners I was wonderful and was listed for this class as well. However, the teacher changed before class began and though you would expect the style of teaching is all the same, it isn't. The class started with 7-8 and dwindled to 4 on the last day. Too bad because the last class was the best class(we had the previous teacher from Manners I as a sub). I still am impressed with this place. I will most likely enroll in another class but I will do some investigating of teachers before hand. read more

My review pertains only to their retail shop as I have not participated in their dog training classes. Maybe I am misunderstanding how this company is set up- is the retail shop an afterthought? I visited their retail store to see what dog chews they offered for purchase. There was one individual at the desk/ cash register when I arrived. I must have walked in circles around their table of dog chews for 10- 15 minutes and I was never greeted nor was I asked if I needed help or had any questions. Hint: I did have a question. The individual at the desk was making phone calls but she never acknowledged my presence after she hung up each time and just continued on. I continued to walk around the store and peruse their products and noticed one other, I presume, employee near the front desk. Neither gave me the time of day. They were not outright rude but certainly didn't give me the impression that the retail shop is one iota of a priority. I bumped up to two stars as the woman who rang me up was nice enough but I would have appreciated some customer service. I suppose if you aren't actively paying for training classes, you're not high on their priority list. I'll find somewhere else to purchase products. read more

Maureen Patin and her staff at What A Great Dog! have created a tremendous dog training center. My dog is almost two and has had the benefit of training here since he was old enough to start training. We've been through puppy class, obedience, rally, agility and therapy dog. I started hearing about this new dog training center that opened right down the street from my home and thought how lucky are we? It was an unexpected surprise to be found in the small town of Prosper, Texas. I had no idea that we had stumbled upon one of the most respected trainers in Texas. My dog, Bruce, is the first dog that I have ever trained and feel so fortunate that she was in our lives and mentored us through all the different stages of raising a Labrador Retriever. I have a well socialized, well mannered dog that loves people and is eager to learn new things. We are still training in agility and rally and would never dream of training anywhere else. One of the things that I treasure about What a Great Dog! is the strong sense of community they have created within the teams that train there. I count myself lucky to have had Maureen to help raise my "baby" and her kindness, patience, and expert training techniques. I highly recommend What A Great Dog! read more

What a Great Dog is a fantastic training facility. We trained our first dog with their help through all of the manners classes and our boy passed his CGC on the first try. We used the training materials they provided us with our first dog to train our second dog as well. They have great staff and trainers who are very patient and knowledgeable. The prices aren't too bad either. It's a bit on the pricey side, but the facility is very nice and it's worth it. I do want to go back soon and enroll our first dog in agility classes. They have an indoor obstacle course and they offer agility classes that start at the introductory level and progress to more advanced stuff. They also have a retail section where you can find toys, treats, food, grooming items, collars, etc. The retail section is usually a tad more expensive than say amazon or chewy, but if you need something while you're there it's convenient. I'm glad we have such an amazing place nearby to take our boys too. They really enjoy going there and training and we really love the stimulation it offers them. What a great place! read more

I checked out numerous other training options before settling on What a Great Dog! I have now been going for over two years. I couldn't be more pleased. I love the variety of dog training classes - obedience, rally, barn hunt, agility, manners and more. Their knowledge of different breeds and the nuances that work with your particular dog is very impressive. Not only do the dogs learn new things at every session, but with their methods, the dogs joyfully perform these tasks with enthusiasm. Went there recently and I signed up for 4 sessions of Puppy Socialization. I didn't even bother going to the 4th. session, because I found it to be a waste of my time (repetitive). The trainer gave too much important information and not enough time for puppy socialization. Puppies want to play and I understand the reasons for WAGD wanting to do it their way and holding the pups on a leash, but then call the class: "Owner Socialization while holding a puppy on a leash, that wants to run free and play, but not allowed". They limit the class to 2-3 people per pup (12-15 pups), but it was chaotic at times with the kids wanting to pet the pups and leashes crossing over. The good intentions to give important information, took too much of the limited 30 minutes session. Suggestion: Have a class for the owners, while the pups run free. I could have done 1 session, save $30 and would have come out the same after 4 sessions. Ended up bringing a personal dog trainer home. Yes, more expensive, but worth every penny of it, plus my whole family was present and no chaos. Highly recommend to this and do the socialization going to parks or walking around. We are doing the socialization with all the other dogs in our dog friendly neighborhood. I know WAGD are very well known as dog trainers and I want to emphasize, that this was my experience for the Puppy Socialization Class only and this is meant as constructive criticism. 2-2-2016 In this time and age, we only get to hear the bad experiences and rarely the good ones. When a business takes pride in what they do, they listen to clients comments and make changes to improve the quality of their services. In this occasion, I wanted to update what a fine first class business WAGD is. After my not so positive review, the owner contacted me and offered a complete refund ($40) for the 3 classes I attended and the one I voluntarily missed. No strings attached. I appreciated this super professional gesture and she discussed taking my criticism to heart and making changes to the Puppy Socialization Class. The owner didn't have to do this at all, but being a legit caring business, she did. I accepted a partial credit only for the class I missed on purpose ($10), since I attended the other 3 and still there was plenty of good information that I got out of the class, plus I didn't feel right getting a full refund. This gesture moved me into writing an update about WAGD. Remember, this is a great place for dog training with great reviews and many recommended this place to me. I am planing on taking the advanced classes once my GS pup comes back from boarding school. I must repeat and emphasize, that this was my personal experience for the Puppy Socialization Class, not the whole business. read more

I have two dogs currently taking agility classes here. It took me a while to get in the first agility class due to my work schedule (not enough evening or weekend afternoon classes), but once I got in, everything went really smooth. Staff is consistently helpful and kind, and classes are very instructive and on time. I've tried to attend other agility class in the past in Carrollton, but the owner/instructor was rude and it was not very pleasant experience and I decided that wasn't the place for my dogs. We finish manners 1 today with two dogs and I have been very happy with the classes and what we have learned. The retail shop is also wonderful. We have one dog who has been in private lessons for anxiety and we learned so much on how to manage her fears and help her feel less anxious in most situations. The facility is huge. With several training areas. They can handle everything from basic puppy training to agility and therapy dog training. We are currently taking a puppy there fore class. They also have a shop with a great selection of unique dog toys and training aids. And their prices are as good as I've found online or in local mega pet stores. read more

We have been through puppy 1, 2, pet manners 3, Great Dog, and Rally classes. My 15 month old lab has pretty much grown up here! The trainers are great, the techniques are ONLY positive, and I know a ton of really great dogs who are very happy to work for their owners due to the positive training. The facility is amazing. Whether you want just some basic manners and information on how to begin raising a dog, or you want advanced classes for fun, this place is fantastic. The trainers are fun, positive, and motivated, even if it is the 100th puppy class they teach - they really seem to love seeing the dogs progress. They have large, clean, indoor rings, and an amazing agility ring - which is going to get even better with artificial turf. They are one of a few facilities that offer Cynosport Rally Trials - if you want to get into Rally, this is a fantastic facility. read more

I have been going to WAGD for over a year now. We rescued a 2 year old terrier mix and she REALLY needed training (Puppy Manners 1 & 2. She did so well that when we got our second rescue (a 2 yr old border collie), we went to Maureen for help. We started with a consultation to determine what Jack needed and what we wanted. We wanted a private class to get started and also decided on a group class - Puppy Manners II, which Jack just passed. We are now going to start taking some really fun classes - like agility, treiball, and K-9 nose sniffing. It's fun being around other pets and owners and the facility is AMAZING! Ike and Anna are our 4th and 5th German Shepherds and we knew fron experience that these dogs love to have jobs and learn things. A friend told us about WAGD and we enrolled Ike when he was a pup and have been there ever since..he's 4 now.. Maureen and her staff offer so many diverse classes for every phase of your dog's development and all training is done with positive reinforcement and a love of dogs. We highly recommend the classes for puppies, 1st time dog owners, advanced handlers, even children old enough to be responsible dog handlers. I like the training methods and group class work. The trainers are nice and helped deal with jumping. Our classes were mainly for socialization and minor training. Our issue is that our puppy kept getting bugs from all the dogs there, I guess. Switching to Bark Busters for at-home training to tone down on this. We live to far away for the toll bills and the vet bills. I reccomend it- it's just that our dog is super sensitive. Sigh. read more

We started at WAGD 2 years ago solely to get our CGC - and we have been regularly training there ever since (it is THAT good & so much fun). I originally started my training at PetSmart (& I don't want to knock them - because our trainer was wonderful). But by the 3rd or 4th beginner class - there were only 2 dogs left after starting full with 8. We signed up for intermediate & by the 2nd class - only 1 other dog besides mine. I wanted my dog to not only learn but to socialize as well - since that is such an important component of training. I asked my dog sitter who she used & she told me about WAGD. I spoke with Maureen (the owner & one of the trainers) who carefully screens most dogs before she will let them join the general public class to make sure there are no socialization issues. We had a nice long discussion (she never gives you the impression that she has to get off the phone because she has something better to do - although she is one busy lady). She allowed my boy to enter at the CGC level class & 8 weeks later - he was a Canine Good Citizen. He enjoyed going every week so I asked if there was an advanced class we could sign up for. We started Therapy Dog Training as well as Great Dog (which is an ongoing class) and which we are still in to this day. I also put my boy into agility which he was wishy washy about. But the trainers are so good at WAGD - that they showed me how to get his excitement level up & he started to thrive at agility. He looked forward to our 30 minute training sessions every morning & was sad if it was raining out & we couldn't play / train. Unfortunately - he was diagnosed with a spinal condition & the vet told us we were going to have to take him out of Agility. But No Problems - WAGD offers so many different types of classes with so many exceptional trainers. We promptly put him into Rally (which wouldn't cause spinal issues) & now he looks so forward to our Weekly Rally classes. I've even had Victoria (Rally instructor) e-mail me with suggestions during the week when she thinks of another way to train a rally move that we are having some problems picking up. The fact that they think of you on their 'off time' is so truly impressive. My dog loves WAGD so much that when we pull into their parking lot - he starts little whines of excitement. Getting his harness off so that he can go to class is probably the longest 15 seconds of his life. We do have a second dog who has a few socialization issues (he is very timid) and we put him through to the CGC training. Maureen was cognizant each week to remind our fellow classmates that my dog was extremely timid and to have others keep that in mind and give us a little wider berth. We did enter him also into Great Dog class - but his timidity just got the better of him - so we finally withdrew him. However, now at the new gigantic center opening in Frisco - they actually have new & exciting classes (even for timid dogs) - so he may get to go to class again. The retail center is awesome & only sells well researched American products (& especially nutritious). I can't wait to see what they add to the enlarged retail center when they move to Frisco. The other awesome part of their retail center is Kenna (Maureen's sister) who may have many other people waiting in the retail center - but treats you like you are the only one. I can go on and on about WAGD & frequently do with Veterinarians, Doggy Day Cares, Groomers, etc... as well as people who see me wearing their t-shirt and ask me questions. The best part is with all this going on - they treat me like a member of the family. The sense of community is amazing & I consider so many of my fellow doggy parents my friends now. I heard about What A Great Dog owner/trainer, Maureen Patin, at the Prosper Pooch Party. So, I took my Dachshund, Elle, for a private lesson with Maureen. She has helped me with everything from basic obedience to potty training. However, my biggest surprise was how my Dachshund, Elle, took to agility. Her tail never stops wagging while she's on the agility course. We like to stop by WAGD on Saturday mornings to check out the puppy socialization and agility classes. It's just plain fun to watch the puppies getting started and to follow them as they move through various levels of training. Also, the Friday night Agility league is also a favorite as Maureen and all the trainers have worked very hard to create a WAGD community that comes to cheer each other on while they're on the course with their best buddy. The icing on the cake is that WAGD has just opened the largest indoor training facility in Texas. The air conditioned indoor facility is really great during these Texas hot days and nights. read more
