Overall I wanted to love this place. The menu is very vegetarian and vegan friendly. Unfortunately, besides the drinks which were great the food left most of us wanting. My husband ordered the all beef hot dog, which I can guarantee you was a vegan dog. He was super pissed. It was also miniature compared to the bun and had nothing on it. The nachos were literally chips with cheese melted on them. My hummus wrap was tasty but was messy. I was also expecting the hummus to be more of a spread instead of the filling. My SIL said her Beyond Burger was good. I honestly think that if they tried to care about their food they could make a super killing with this amazing location. This is a great place to stop if you're in the area for the Tropical Botanical Gardens or 'Akaka Falls. The food is fresh and tasty and the scenery is very pretty. Mosquitos can be an issue here, so have bug spray handy. We ordered a salmon sandy, tuna sandy, taro wrap, fish wrap, and tamale extreme along with a couple smoothies. The fresh veggies and sprouts that came on all the sandwiches and wraps were a nice touch. So was the papaya and bananas that came with each entree. The papayas were so sweet! My salmon in the salmon sandy was cooked well and the sauce was just right to give it good flavor without overpowering the salmon. Each plate also came with a fresh cabbage slaw which I thought it wouldn't like because it was just raw cabbage with dressing, but I ate every piece! The cabbage didn't have a very strong taste and the dressing was creamy but mild. Both smoothies were also very good. Stopped by this spot on our way to the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden, as we had not had lunch yet it seemed like a good place to stop and eat something before wandering around the garden trails. Tried the Kickin' Chicken Wrap and Ginger Twist smoothie, both were delicious! The ginger flavor in the Ginger Twist smoothie is intense, if you don't like ginger then this would not be the smoothie for you, but as I enjoy the sweet spiciness of ginger, it was a delight especially on a warm humid day. The chicken wrap came with some slaw and cut fresh fruit, and I liked that the chicken was tender and the beans in the wrap were black beans and clearly not from a can but had the taste of being home-made. It's nice that there are so many picnic tables set up, and you can view the farm from where some of their produce is grown as well. The staff were friendly, and made us feel welcome. Bottom Line: Great little scenic spot to spot for a quick bite, food and smoothies are flavorful and filling. read more

After arriving on the Big Island at Hilo we went exploring and taking scenic routes. We had passed this on our exploration and thought cute but wasn't hungry. However, on our return to drive towards Mountain View needed to eat. Now we stopped before they close. Very colorful place limited food menu but wide variety of smoothies. I was almost halfway on my run along the Scenic Route when I was distracted by this place's sign for fresh chilled coconuts, vegan food, and smoothies. I happily derailed from my run and helped myself to a smoothie. I ordered the Pacific Passion and was thoroughly satisfied. If I didn't have another 4.6 miles to run, I would have also helped myself to a vegan wrap as well. The workers here were very friendly and they appeared courteous all all the touristy visitors who rolled through here. I even picked up a flower pick from their little gift shelf as I arrived in Hawaii without any of mine. It was reasonably priced at $3. If I ever find myself back here again, I'm definitely getting a chilled coconut and vegan wrap! read more

This is a great stop along the scenic drive in Hilo. We were starving and luckily the portions were big! We all got turkey wraps which came with a few fruit slices and a salad (like cole slaw). The service was pretty fast and we had a nice outdoor area to wait and dine in. The workers were friendly and the place was clean. The smoothies looked pretty delicious, but after spending $50 for lunch, I couldn't justify spending $ on a drink too. The price is pretty typical for what we received. read more

We ate here three years ago and gave it five stars because it was such a hidden gem. My vegetarian daughter loved it so much we made a special trip well over an hour to get there. I had called ahead the day before (December 23) to make sure they would be open on December 24. The guy said they were open until 3. We arrived at 1:45 and were told that they had no more food. I asked about smoothies and the lady said, "no, we are not making any more smoothies today" even though she was surrounded by fruit and smoothie ingredients and had just finished making a smoothie when we walked up. She explained that they decided to close early. So if you are in the area and very close by, give this place a try but do NOT make a special trip 'cause these folks are a little flaky and make their own hours. read more

The smoothies Stick to drinks. The smoothies were great. However, customer service was awful. The burly man, is sarcastic, and just rude. Not to mention he goes from scratching his beard, to touching money, to making food (UNGLOVED) without washing his hands. The wait time is 30+ mins for food and drinks, even if they aren't that busy, and if you check on your order, you're given attitude. The food is just basic. You could make a deli meat wrap at home for WAY less. We also saw the nachos of the people next to us which were broken Kirkland chips, with shredded Kirkland cheese on top then popped in the microwave. WHAT A JOKE. He memorized a very unhelpful script he conjures up and spits it out at everyone then gets frustrated when people can't understand him. Their credit card machine was broken so he turns the iPad to you expecting you figure it out. He spits out his stupid script on how their credit card machine has not been working and to manually input the number. To manually input you push "cancel" and not "open". He doesn't tell you this but gets upset with you that you couldn't figure out their equipment malfunctioning. Pretentious ass. Shaka guide should not be recommending shit attitude businesses. Loved this little gem! A perfect stop along the scenic drive coming from the Hawaii Botanical Gardens (definitely visit there, too!) going toward Akaka State Park. If you're taking this journey, be sure to add What's Shakin to your road plan. We got the papaya paradise smoothie - the consistency was perfect and the flavors were so refreshing! As an added bonus, the smoothie came out in about 30 seconds (even though there were lots of customers). They are quick and efficient. I can't speak to the food, but highly recommend for a smoothie break. Tips: they also have a small gift shop; stop on your scenic drive from Hilo travelling north to Akaka Falls. read more

Vegetarian and vegan options and wraps. This is a juice/smoothie place that also makes wraps and has bagels. Come for the drinks and not so much the food. You can make the simple food at home for less. It's meh. My friend had a fish wrap... 2 of 3 pieces were cooked and one was raw in the middle. My spinach tortilla wrap was hard and for some reason there's a microwave being used in the kitchen. Not too sure why it's there. Oh that's right, they warmed up my wrap in the microwave. Duh. For being so earth friendly and hippie-ish there was no recycling bins and plastic straws being used. The good: drinks, smoothies and fruit! The Kona mocha shake was bomb! Tastes of coffee and chocolate were perfect. Love the setup they have there. I'll come back for a smoothie and that's about it. read more

Decent smoothie. Somewhat of a long line, but arguably worth it if this is your craving. There are some other competitors on the road in, so make sure you're traveling to the right one. UPDATE 3/16 I did get a pleasant reply from a yelper who apparently works at What's Shakin' so I am updating my review from 1 to 3 stars. To my main complaints from my visit, she replied : 1) they don't give receipts to customers, she can't explain why I got overcharged, please come back so they can make it right. (Well, when you don't give receipts to customers, this just really opens the door to both mistakes and to outright employee theft both from customers and from the business. I paid cash. Did it go in the register or not? Did the overage show up at the end of the day? How can you know if you don't require staff to give receipts?) 2) the single scoop of guacamole is actually 2 scoops but placed on top of each other so it looks like one scoop (Okayyyy....one scoop or two scoops on top each other, what we got still seemed over-priced to me) 3) they use a whole pint of locally made Tropical Dreams ice cream in the smoothie which is why they charge $8.95 for it... which definitely explains why it was so delicious ! The cup barely looked bigger than a pint but I wasn't measuring so I guess I have to take this at face value. 4) ice tea is actually $3.25 not $3. My mistake. ORIGINAL REVIEW: IT'S A NICE PLACE, BUT ASK FOR A RECEIPT AND CHECK YOUR BILL. I don't like to be overcharged; unfortunately I didn't realize it until I was long away from the location. I ordered guacamole and chips ($8.95), iced tea ($3) and my friend ordered a hot dog ($6.95), and a shake ($8.95). The cashier told me it was $31.66 but never gave me a receipt, and I paid with cash. I was surprised by the total but for some reason let it slide. Doing the math later, this should all have added up to $27.85 plus tax.... so I don't know how she got to $31.66. This was my first visit to What's Shakin', which is strategically located to serve tourists leaving the botanical gardens (and also for sale if you dream of running your own smoothy stand and farm on the Hamakua coast). Our order of guacamole and chips was overpriced at $8.95. The guac was tasty with some nice heat from hot peppers.. but there was only one scoop of it. I expected more for the price, particularly since they grow and sell their own avocados. The banana ice cream shake, also overpriced. Delicious, but for $8.95 I was surprised by the relatively small cup. The hot dog at $7 --- well, the highlight was a really nice sweetbread roll that was perfectly toasted. It was served with 2 individual sections of a tangerine, a slice of pineapple, and corn chips. I was kind of cracking up over the 2 tiny tangerine sections, given how abundant tangerines are on the big island, but whatever, it was a nice garnish. The black iced tea was quite nice at $3. I saw some really nice huge sandwich wraps loaded with avocado that were priced at $11- $12--- I think that's what we should have ordered. What's Shakin was listed on a restaurant app and it sounded like a great place to stop. I brought the family there before Christmas and we were surprised by the high prices, the limited menu and the lack of many meat sandwich options. We noticed a small tent in the parking lot that had numerous meat sandwich options and much friendlier service. We ended up ordering smoothies from What's Shakin and our sandwiches from the food cart, Eats. The staff at What's Shakin was quite rude and seemed annoyed that we had ordered our food at Eats food cart. Next time we will skip What's Shakin altogether and just go to the Eats food cart! read more
