Great food, services and store!! Great prices too!!! Yum! The ice cream had a good selection, and the surprise bag was soooo good!

After hearing musings about the seafood at What's the Scoop I admit, curiosity got the better of me. After all, how could an "ice cream place" possibly also know their stuff about entrees as well? Well on my recent visit I was converted. I am actually going to go out on a limb and say that I think I might prefer the fish here to the fish at Wharf Wraps across the street and that's saying something! We decided to go back and sample "anything but ice cream" this time and boy were we pleasantly surprised. I had heard nothing but rave reviews of the lobster roll so that's what I ordered. Hubby ordered the 2 piece fish and chips and we got the chicken nugget combo for the boys. I also ordered fries to go with my lobster roll. The lobster roll was awesome. Served in a soft and hot dog bun (the ones that come in a package of 12, not a package of 8 - you know the ones I mean...) it was overflowing with lobster. The flavour was mouthwatering and the only negative I can think of was that I like the addition of celery to my lobster sandwich. But, the huge positive is that it was a mere $7.00 (taxes included!). SEVEN dollars for a lobster sandwich. Amazing. The fries were homecut (I'm one of those rare people who prefer frozen) but they served the purpose and were adequate ketchup conveyors for our little boys. Their nuggets were sadly of the mystery-meat variety but you win some, you lose some. The big surprise was the fish and chips which I've already alluded to as being the surprise hit of the visit. Two generous pieces (the two together make up the same size as the one piece at Wharf Wraps) were cooked to perfection with light batter and the inside boasted white flaky succulent haddock. And the kicker? Only $10.00 (taxes included) which is four dollars cheaper than the competition. While you give up the ambiance and table service of Wharf Wraps if you're looking for a quick take out option that is still delicious with a quick turn around What's the Scoop is the way to go. You thought Dartmouth had a bad reputation but Eastern Passage definitely has had it's fair share of bad publicity. Then you drive along and you reach this beautiful and quaint boardwalk with boutiques, seafood stores and lobster restaurants. I came here with my boyfriend last night right as the sun was starting to set; it was warm and right on the ocean. It's so nice to have this little place, it's almost like an oasis in the midst of Eastern Passage. As we were waking we got the rumblies... aka, we got hungry. We weren't in the mood for a sit-in restaurant and, lucky for us, we stumbled upon What's the Scoop. Contrary to what the same suggests, this little almost chip-truck type deal, doesn't serve only ice cream. You can order hot dogs, lobster rolls, fries, seafood, etc. There's a little seating area so we sat down and waited for our food. I ordered the pan-fried scallops and my man ordered the 2 piece fish-&-chips. We took our food, sat in the trunk of my truck and gobbled down our feast. We stopped at this little snack hut on the Fisherman's Cove boardwalk to grab a snack after a lovely boat trip to McNabs Island. It was a hot, sunny day so it was quite busy but we didn't wait long for service so they are clearly used to it. This is pretty impressive too, considering (I think) there were only two people working there at the time. We ordered a lobster roll and fries which were both delicious. Presentation is very simple - just lobster salad with a bit of salt and pepper in a hotdog bun - but the meat tasted really fresh. The fries were really crispy, hot and salty. The best part is the roll was only $7 and the fries were only $3 (for a large that was big enough for the two of us to share). We had a couple of scoops of ice cream each after our meal and we enjoyed those as well and the price was reasonable (their prices are actually one of the lowest on the boardwalk). I think it was $1.75 for two scoops. If you're out visiting Eastern Passage on a gorgeous hot sunny afternoon like we were you will have a few ice cream options. We opted for "What's the Scoop" and were only disappointed in our flavor choices because half of them were too soft for the servers to scoop. Just a note: this is a Cash Only joint. We settled on a Mega Mint Cookie in a cone and a Melted Snowman (peanut butter & chocolate chip in Vanilla) in a waffle cone. Both were delicious and reasonably priced for the size cone you get. (2.75 for the Medium regular cone & $3.25 for the Medium Waffle Cone). They have the full menu of Scotburn flavors, and slushies, sundaes and banana splits on their varied menu. Its not just a dessert spot either. You can get fish and chips and other take out food to enjoy on their patio at the picnic tables. Its a tasty drop in spot that I would happily visit again for a cone (just hopefully not such a hot day so I can enjoy my first choice flavor instead of my choice of what wasn't too soft to serve.) read more

This is an HRM hidden gem. This little food shack is more of a fish and chips spot than an ice cream parlor. I am going to make a bold statement here. But What's the Scoop happens to have the best regular poutine in the city. Yes I said it. Perfectly crispy fries, fresh cheese curds and hot flavorful gravy. Isn't that what you want? And they're very consistent. The portions are fabulous too. This has become one of my go to fish and chip spots here in HRM. The fish is never mushy, always perfectly done on the inside and very crispy on the outside. Combine that with delicious fries and you're good to go. They have incredible lobster rolls and other home made concoctions as well. This isn't a restaurant- it's a small shack. So if it is a gorgeous day outside you can eat at a picnic table by the ocean or take away. But yes- please try the poutine. I lived most of my life within ten minutes of this place and I never tried their burger until today. WOW! What have I been missing. The Scoop burger is one of the best burgers I have even had and I make a habit of eating lots of different burgers. They also have a huge menu and from what I could tell excellent fresh seafood. Lots of kids lining up for ice cream and you can even order homemade cream pies! If you are out in Eastern Passage definitely give What's the Scoop a try. read more

Awesome food! Best fish and chips I've had! The service is very friendly. One of my favourites!

I stopped by here after hiking on McNab's Island all day and was looking forward to some ice cream. After I saw that their lobster roll was only $7, I decided to get that as well. Delicious! The bun is filled with fresh lobster meat with some mayo and pepper and it's a good deal. I recommend the death by chocolate ice cream - $1 per scoop - not bad! They also have a bowl of water for doggies which was a plus since it was a hot day. read more

Milkshakes are good, ice cream is fine. The funny thing is that when you want to pay with a credit card, their machine has no options for No Tip. You have to pay tip, even if you don't want to. They have options for tip starting from 15% all the way up. So that's kinda cheating. read more

Not worth the time or the money. The food looked good but I have no idea what it tasted like as they forgot our order. After people started to get served that came 30 mins after us we asked and they didn't have the slip but they sure did already have our money... Won't be back. read more

Very bad service this evening, my girlfriend and I waited nearly an hour for our order of only fries and a hot dog, when we finally asked about our order they offered no good explanation or refund for their mistake. We use to order here quite often when the food was good, but the service tonight lost a few customers. read more

Absolutely terrible service. We watched as one person asked for a refund and thought that was a bit harsh for a wait. That was until we waited on the side lines for 1.5 hours. Up until groups of people who came 45 mins after us started to get served. We approach the window and the employees start arguing over who lost our order. Realizing that they haven't even started our order yet we asked for a refund. Which two employees started to give us a hard time. Saying they don't do that often and that our food would only be a few more minutes. We figured asking for a refund on an order that hadn't even been started 1.5 hours after it was ordered was perfectly reasonable. Yup. Never my friends, NEVER. read more
