Because of that positive experience, I brought my 9-year old son in today to have a tooth removed. My son has some special needs - he has severe ADHD, a learning disability and intense anxiety about pain. During our consultation with Dr. Scherer last month, I informed him of this and explained that my son has anxiety and fear (somewhat disproportionate to a normal level) when it comes to pain. I said, he will be VERY afraid and wI'll likely cry. I asked Dr. Scherer what he could do to help alleviate the fear. Answer: a child's dose of Valium the night before and morning of, and either laughing gas or IV sedation. I assumed those would be coupled with some understanding and a little empathy and maybe compassion for a terrified CHILD. OMG!!!! NOTHING could be farther from that. Dr. Scherer showed no empathy or compassion. Basically, he scared my son even more by saying "We can either do this now, here - or in the hospital." He demonstrated no care or understanding that my son was terrified. In fact, Dr. Scherer's demeanor was brusque, curt and slightly aggressive. He was unkind in that he used my son's fear against him instead of found or saying ANYTHING to try to allay his fear... even a little. My son was being brave and 'keeping it together' until we were told that I wasn't allowed to go into the room to hold his hand. Per Dr. Scherer, APPARENTLY, having a parent in the room makes the situation worse. Ok, maybe. I'll never know. But, I never expected the callous, brusque manner of Dr. Scherer today. I don't understand why this "hard-a$$" approach was necessary or appropriate for a scared, terrified kid with cognitive challenges. Shame on you, Dr. Scherer.

I arrived at 4:30, filled out a quick form and was taken back into an exam room. The staff member who took me back was lovely, and got myself and my mother water. I was then told that Dr Zurek had to do a "quick exam" on another patient. Dr Zurek didn't get to me until 5:10pm; he left me sitting for 25 minutes. When he came into the room, he was bombastic and spoke loudly about how he had been having a busy day. I was there to talk about dentures/dental implants. He started by asking me why my teeth were so bad; when I told him that there were issues in both my mother and father's sides of the family with teeth, my explanation wasn't good enough. He began the discussion of my options by asking if the reason my teeth were bad was because I was "lazy or had bad dental hygiene", saying he needed to know in order to best assess what type of dental prosthetic would work for me. During the discussion, I broke into tears at least three times. I really felt that I was being talked down to and judged. Dr Zurek spent a great deal of time touting his expertise and abilities. He suggested a solution that would cost $65,000, although I had mentioned that cost was a concern. I felt zero compassion from him. At one point, I was crying with my head down in the exam chair while he talked with my mother about my options, and I just couldn't take any more of it. When he finally asked me what I thought, I told him that I thought that I needed to leave, took off my dental "bib", got up and grabbed my purse; I walked right out. As I was leaving, he called after me that it was "very important that I be involved in the discussion", but I refused and left the office, going outside and sitting on the practices stairs until my mother followed a few minutes later and we both left. I feel traumatized by this experience, and cannot believe I was spoken to like a naughty child. I am 49 years old and do not need that from someone I am going to for help, with the intention of paying him a large amount of money for his services. What makes this especially frustrating is that they call me about once a week asking if I want to come in for last‑minute openings when they have cancellations. But when I had a legitimate medical issue, suddenly there was no flexibility and no interest in accommodating a long‑time patient. After three decades with this practice, I wasn't asking for anything unreasonable -- just basic courtesy. The way this was handled made it clear that loyalty doesn't count for much here anymore. At this point, I'm planning to find a different dentist for myself, my kids, and anyone else I care about. This has led to a situation where I have been unable to schedule a 6 month routine dental exam. He really tries to minimize pain for the patients and doesn't ever pressure you into doing anything and explains everything to you. He's also a very friendly and funny guy. I appreciate that he never makes a big deal over tiny cavities either and doesn't scare you into treating it right away. It seems like he prioritizes just keeping a watch on small cavities, but if he does recommend a filling, they use a form of laser treatment instead of drilling here. I've never had a laser cavity treatment but it sounds way better than the drilling and numbing that other dentists use. I feel a lot more comfortable and open to coming back to get them filled now. All the hygienists I've had here have all been very gentle, respectful, friendly, and always make me feel comfortable. They do not scrape too hard, they compliment my teeth, and I really appreciate that they do not talk to me or ask questions during the cleanings. I'm a shy person and I think they pick up on that lol. The cleaning I had recently only took about 20-30 minutes too.
