I think a lot of people that come here, do so for glasses. However, the main reason why I go here has to do with specialized doctors for Retina and Vitreous. Dr. Fenton is very good, very smart, and I trust him with my eyes. Bedside manner isn't perfect but good, and its his ability to diagnose and treat that matters. I found the techs good and the overall experience to be trustworthy. Bottom line, Dr. Fenton is amazing for vitreous and retina. The office and eyeglass area is fine, nothing really upsetting or anything. But I haven't used the place for eye glasses. read more

You don't need to go here, and probably shouldn't. For whatever reason you are considering the Wheaton Eye Clinic, you can find a better practice to patronize. I developed a chalazion in the corner of my eye. The bump I have is not the nightmare you'll see if you do a Google search. In fact, most people tell me that they didn't notice it until I pointed it out. However, I am very familiar with my own face and noticed it right away. I went to my normal doctor to get it checked. She referred me to the Wheaton Eye Clinic. I went to schedule an appointment. If you are familiar with real estate prices in the western suburbs of Chicago, then you know which towns have expensive homes in their borders. The fact that Wheaton Eye Clinic has their locations in those towns is no accident. The leases or properties that the Clinic occupies must be correspondingly expensive. Based the recommendation of the Clinic, I made an appointment to see Dr. John Pak, who specializes in plastic and reconstructive surgery around the eyes. On the day of my appointment, I spent about 20 minutes completing paperwork and answering questions with a nurse-sort of person who wore scrubs. Then I met with Dr. Pak for ten minutes. He looked at the bump at the corner of my eye and told me it was caused by a clogged gland. I asked how to get rid of it. He explained that it's not dangerous or harmful, and that the only way to remove it was through surgery - which he did not recommend. He said that if we lanced and drained the bump, it would just return. Since there was no medical necessity to remove it, the surgery would be elective and not covered by insurance. He asked me if there was anything else - there wasn't - and he left the examining room. I walked up to the reception desk and asked if there was a co-pay or anything else for me to do. They said no and wished me a good day. Thirty days later, I received the bill - $186.97. I crapped my pants. That was more than twice as much as I get charged for a full blood workup when I see my medical doctor to get my cholesterol checked! But the most shocking part was the time/cost ratio. I don't think Dr. Pak charges by the minute, but if he does, an hour long visit would run over $1100. I called Wheaton Eye Clinic and asked about the charge. I explained that my insurance was not going to cover any of the costs. I asked whether the cost of the visit could be reduced since I received no treatment, no resolution of the issue and only had a 10 minute conversation with Dr. Pak. The billing representative put me on hold to go ask. When she came back, she informed me that the answer was no. This is what Dr. Pak charges. I asked my optometrist (NOT an eye doctor - no medical school...) about the bump when I had my annual eye exam a month or so later. He said, immediately, that it is a chalazion and was nothing to worry about. I said, if I did not have this appointment to update my prescription, how much would he charge me to diagnose the bump. He laughed and said he wouldn't charge anyone for that. He said that if it was in a worse location, or had a bad look to it, he would refer me to another doctor. But for what I had going on, charging me would be wrong. There are a number of possible explanations for why Dr. Pak and the Wheaton Eye Clinic charges $187 per 10 minutes to diagnose a harmless bump. One reason is that Dr. Pak is an arrogant professional who feels that he has earned the right to charge this fee after his investment in medical school. Another reason is that their real estate is expensive. The patients need to cover those costs, right? A third reason is that the Wheaton Eye Clinic is a status-driven practice. If you want to be able to say that you went there, you'll need to pay up. A Honda will carry your groceries home, but Mercedes does it with more status. Whatever floats your boat. At the end of the day, you're going pay more for services at Wheaton Eye Clinic. If you're doing it because you can - good for you. If you're not a wealthy, entitled person, then you don't need to go to the Wheaton Eye Clinic. They don't care about you - they care about money, status and reputation. They got my money. Now I 'm trying to help them with their status and reputation. read more

I would never recommend this clinic to anyone and I would never return. I honestly don't know how they stay in business. To start, the check-in procedure at the front desk is chaotic. There is no clear line, so that some people who entered the building after I did got checked in before me. And the staff at the front desk would not look up or offer to help people unless they absolutely had to. I watched this happen to others throughout my wait. There are two sides to the line - one for check-in and one for billing, but there are NO signs telling you where to go. The nurse who took my information spoke broken English and instead of trying to get a good, solid medical history, she just put things in that sounded right to her - but were not accurate! This was the worst intake interview I've ever had. She did not know how to spell the names of some very common medications that I take and I had to correct her several times. When I told her that the location of my pharmacy was Bolingbrook (Illinois) she selected one in Bowling Green (Kentucky) and then didn't want to fix it. She had trouble using her computer system and I had to help her use it. The first physician I saw actually did a fairly decent interview and actually seemed to care, but she botched the procedure and I had to return the following week. The second time I got an awful doctor. He just wanted to examine me and not do the treatment I needed at this visit, even though I made it clear that was what I wanted when I made the appointment. He wanted me to come back later. He finally agreed to do the procedure that I had scheduled but told me I'd have to pay for it myself. I told him that I'd gladly pay whatever the insurance didn't cover. I asked him how much it would cost and he replied, "I hate doing this," referring to finding out costs. The phone call to the front desk took him less than 30 seconds, so I don't see why that was such an awful thing for him to do. I spent 12 minutes with this doctor (I timed it because of the numerous prior delays). Then he billed me for a 30 minute visit as a new patient plus a separate charge for the procedure. How can I be a new patient when I was just there with his colleague the week before - and why should I be charged for a 30 minute office visit that lasted 12 minutes? I know they can bill for shorter visits because they billed me less for a 20 minute visit for the previous week, when I actually spent more time with the nurse and the doctor! The doctor refused to answer any questions I had about the procedure or how I should hold my head. He then positioned my head so that my neck was in a very painful position - then he complained when I asked him to allow me to move it. He told me, "I can only do one thing at a time." Afterwards, he gloated about what a great job he had done, like an insecure child. When he stopped gloating, he pointed to the door and said, "There's the exit," and refused to answer my questions about what to watch for in terms of infection, etc.. Unfortunately, I did end up with side-effects two days later and had an awful time getting any support from the clinic. When I left the office, I asked at the front desk if I owed them anything. The clerk told me that they would bill me. Then that night around 7:30 p.m. I got a phone call at home DEMAND payment in full. I actually tried to pay the full amount via credit card just to get them to leave me alone, but then the rep kept putting me on hold so I couldn't pay, so I gave up! Then they refused to bill my insurance company for the procedure, but I got the ins. company to call them and they finally agreed. The doctor erroneously had written in the record that my procedure was cosmetic, not medical - even though my cornea was being damaged and there was nothing cosmetic about it and even though his colleague had billed me for a medical procedure the previous week. We had talked about doing a different procedure (removal of papilloma on another part of my face) that was indeed cosmetic, but that was not part of the procedure he performed - I think the notes got co-mingled. Once the clinic reluctantly submitted the claim, my ins. company immediately paid the contracted portion and now I owe only a fraction of what the Wheaton Eye Clinic so rudely demanded from me. I ALWAYS pay my bills and resent the way they treated me. So folks, find another eye care provider, unless you enjoy insensitive, error-prone, factory-style eye care! Good doctors. BUT, not well managed. We have been sitting for more than an hour in a very uncomfortable waiting room and we still have not seen a doctor. Either they stuff their doctors' schedules with too many appointments (on purpose for financial benefit because their patients' time is unimportant when compared to their time?) or they have no appreciation for average time required to see a patient. Aggravating. I really wish they would reschedule appointments when the doctors cannot or will not keep their promises! read more

Dr. said I needed tear duct surgery to open it because of constant watery eyes. I had one of them done & it didn't make a difference. In fact, it watered more than the other one that didn't have surgery! I never went back. I felt the Dr. was highly condescending & very impersonal to me every visit. I would NEVER go back! read more

I feel like a hostage. If I did not have to be here so I could get clearance for another surgery that I absolutely have to have, I'd have left already. I have terrible eyesight and a rare medical condition that can have degenerative effects on my peripheral vision so I have had annual eye appointments for 25 years now. Dr Kietzman is my third neural ophthalmologist in that time. I have never encountered this level of BS with appointment times. I was told to come in at 1:30pm and that my appointment would last for four hours or more. I found this very odd as I've never had an eye appointment last anywhere near that long but I really needed this appointment to happen immediately and had had trouble getting in at three other offices so I booked it anyway. Never again! It's not four hours of work on their part. It's three hours of waiting on yours. And THEY KNOW IT, which is why they warn you ahead of time. I arrived on time and waited 20 minutes, then had about 25 minutes of actual care (by techs) before being shown to the waiting room. Forty-five minutes later, I was shown to the exam room to see the physician but told that he would be with me in 20 minutes or so!!! During my time in the waiting room, I found out that there were four of us total that were here on the 1:30-forever appointment slot. All of us are seeing the same MD, the only one that was around on a Friday afternoon (though to be fair he is also the only one that can handle my specific issue). The appointments are DESIGNED to have you waiting over and over and over. The bad news for them is that it gave me tons of time to work on this review. The MD came into the exam room and was fine but after about ten minutes he was leaving so that someone else could dilate my eye and then take more pictures. Ten minutes later I was back in the waiting room. Ten minutes after that, I was shown back to the exam room (it had been full before) and then was told to wait some more. AN HOUR AND A HALF LATER, he's been in the room next door the whole time and I'm still sitting in the exam chair writing this review. At some point, he's gonna pull the plug on that exam but I may be dead by then. I may update this later with the rest of the info, I may not. I think that all you need to know is that I'm now at my four hour mark and so far I've been with staff for less than 45 minutes. The office manager literally just turned off the front lights. What an incredible waste of my time. Though I need this person's expertise, there is nothing here (test wise) that you couldn't get done at a Lens Crafters. If you just need an eye doc, go somewhere else. If you need a neural ophthalmologist, try Rush or Northwestern or Loyola or ANYWHERE ELSE. read more

WASTE OF MY TIME. I phoned a few weeks ago b/c I was looking for a new eye doctor. Told them I wanted a comprehensive eye exam, the whole thing, etc. They asked me if I wore glasses or contacts. I said both. When I got there I was asked for my health insurance card. I told them I don't have vision insurance. They still wanted the card. The receptionist said their doctors were "M.D.s" and if they found any diagnosis, even "headaches" or "floaters" or "eye dryness" my insurance (BCBS PPO) would probably cover it. I thought that a bit odd and was prepared to pay with my FSA account money in either event. A really nice woman took me back to an interview room and we discussed briefly the tri-focals as she also wore them. I mentioned contacts - that I did not want to wear them that much anymore but still wanted a contact lens prescription so I could order a few boxes and wear contacts on the few occasions I wanted. Well, that was a problem because each "Dr." at the Wheaton Eye Clinic has a "specialty" and my doctor's specialty was god knows what, but he wasn't allowed to write contact lens prescriptions. I would have to see the contact lens specialist. Obviously the word "comprehensive" is not in their vocabulary at this clinic. I had a really bad week and this was the last thing I needed to hear. I became very upset as I knew this wasn't going to turn out well. She went to check with the receptionist and told me the contact lens specialist would cost $120. If BCBS did not accept any "diagnosis" I might get today, that would cost $250 for the regular eye exam. The receptionist came back to the room with the technician and they were both trying to assure me that if I got a "diagnosis" of "dry eye" or "headaches", "floaters", "diabetes", or "anything" basically, I was covered. I told them there wasn't going to be any diagnosis because I was perfectly healthy. I felt like they were trying to come up with something they could use as a diagnosis. So what kind of eye doctor, who is an M.D. no less, cannot write a contact lens prescription? What planet is this? Are "floaters" and "headaches" really a diagnosis insurance is going to cover as a "diagnosis"? This all sounds very suspicious to me. You really have to see two doctors to get the job done? Would the contact lens specialist have been able to write a prescription for glasses or not? I'm going back to For Eyes where heh, guess what, an optometrist can give me a comprehensive exam, including dilation, prescribe glasses AND contacts. In my opinion this place is charging all these big bucks for it's "M.D.s" and the nice buildings they have built. There is something very suspicious about the whole insurance thing. I've actually never been asked for a health insurance card visiting an eye doctor, even when I used to see a doctor out of Northwestern Hospital in downtown Chicago. read more

First time visiting. Nice facility, however I waited 20 minutes after my scheduled appointment before they called me in. When I was finally called in, the technician said she was checking my eyes for my glasses. I told her I didn't wear glasses or contact lens and she said lets see if you need any. At this point I was a little skeptical but I already waited so long so I thought I would just see where this all goes. She was very pleasant and eye site 20:20 in one and 20/30 in the other. When the ophthalmologist came in to the room I was trying to tell him what led up to my visit, dry eyes, blurry vision. He never looked at me, didn't really acknowledge what I was saying and was on the computer. He finally checked my eyes and said, I'm surprised you are seeing as well as you are with no explanation. Gave me drops for dry eyes and was pretty dismissive. I tried to ask him questions but, once again, on the computer, barely answering over his shoulder so I left. Horrible way to treat a new client who was charged close to $200.00 for less than a 10 minute exam with little explanation. I know all of us have bad days at work, but I won't be back. read more

I understand it's covid (even a year later) but staff was rude yelling across the lobby how I couldn't sit with my husband and help fill out the paperwork and had to wait in the car. He wasn't able to see it clearly (we are at an eye clinic) that's why I was helping. Secondly, there was paperwork they wanted initialed that only let you know they offered a certain eye exam and when he didn't want to initial (because he wasn't having that eye exam) they talked to us like he was a moron asking what didn't he understand?? It wasn't regarding payment or his treatment. They weren't willing to see him unless he initialed the paperwork stating they offered this certain eye exam! What's the deal with that. Honestly, a little kindness goes a long, long way, but apparently it didn't make its way to the front desk of this Wheaton Eye Clinic. Will not return here. Really wish the receptionist would stop demanding I present her with a referral... Even though I frantically went through several hoops during our last visit to have it faxed over...only to find out it wasn't needed because we are in network. And yet, she continues to argue that "You always need a referral for ANY DOCTOR when you have an HMO". False. Please get your facts straight! Also, eyewear is about $100 more minimum than anywhere else. We'll be going to Target from now on. read more

This goes for the Wheaton Eye Clinic itself, not just the Plainfield one as I have never been there, it's just kind of getting caught in the cross fire. I switched over from Walmart Eye Center a few months ago and every single request i've had has dragged on so long. I've filled two contact orders with them and it's taken WELL past the 10 days, so much so that I have to drive to scramble to get trials from whichever of their three locations near me hopefully has my prescription. Walmart used to have my prescription filled and delivered in 4-5 days at the most. I can not think of one thing I like about this business other than the workers base-level friendliness. read more

Went to this location as a referral and found the front desk staff to be rude. When my 87 yr. old mother said she didn't know what HIPAA was, the lady at the desk didn't miss a beat when she blurted out "haven't you ever been to a doctor before"? The tech made my 80 year old grandmother walk all the way to the other room rather than bring a small tool to our room to check her tear production. This is after she was going to place something in her eye to check the tears to sit for 5 min. After I insisted she give her numbing drops first (as I had received at a different doctor's office for the same thing)..the doctor told her to use the handheld device instead. She also made her do a second vision test after the doctor just did 5 min earlier. Dr was nice though, and answered all questions. read more

I don't typically take the time to write reviews, and I have never written a negative review before, but my experience with Wheaton Eye Clinic was so FRUSTRATING that I am carving out the time to write this and warn you not to make the same mistake that I did in going to WEC. First and foremost, DO NOT GO HERE IF YOU HAVE VISION INSURANCE!!! They do not accept any vision insurance and no one bothered to explain this to me when I called to set up a comprehensive eye exam as a new patient. They simply asked me what Health Insurance I had, told me I was in network for BCBS and said I'd be covered. Every other eye doctor that I've been to in the past had helpful, informative office staff who asked me my name and DOB and produced a summary of my benefits for me prior to my first appointment (I never had to question whether it was Health or Vision coverage because the office staff always just found out and told me my benefits). I thought that helpful explanation of benefits was the norm for eye clinics, but that was certainly not the case for Wheaton Eye Clinic who operates under the policy of being as evasive as possible to get as many new patients as possible. I made the exact same new patient eye exam appointment for me and for my son, several months apart. My son's appointment was first and his doctor coded the eye exam as "ruling out eye diseases" and was billed to and accepted by my Health Insurance. Since this all went smoothly, I then made an appointment for myself. I saw a different doctor for what I had intended to be the exact same service (new patient eye exam). The doctor I met with coded the exact same exam under a different billing code and therefore was denied by my Health Insurance. Two different doctors interpreted the same exam request two different ways resulting in one charging my son a $25 copay and one charging me over $250 out of pocket. I paid $250 (minus a nominal discount given after hours of time spent escalating to their billing supervisor) out of pocket and was not even so much as given a prescription when I walked out of the office. I left the office knowing nothing about my vision, without new glasses, and with a $200 hole in my pocket and 1.5 hours of lost time that I also had to arrange childcare for. Now I get to the worse part: their inept and condescending office staff. Working with their billing department, front office staff, and insurance specialists was the worst experience I have ever had with a medical office. They were unprofessional and rude in all encounters and cost me hours of my time trying to understand and straighten out my bill. At one point, they also promised me a return phone call after they reached out to the doctor, did not return that call for over a month and then sent my bill to collections while I was waiting for their return call (which I never received). When I complained about their lack of transparency when I was setting up my appointment and how they did not once mention that they don't accept Vision Insurance, and how erroneous it was to bill my son and I so differently, their insurance specialist told me in the most passive aggressive and rude way "I don't understand why you would come see a specialist for an eye exam anyways?" Specialist? How was I supposed to know that I was seeing a specialist that wouldn't be appropriate for a routine eye exam? Your clinic has the word "EYE" in it, so I called to see if I could get an EYE exam and your front desk was very eager to get a new patient to bill and not so eager to explain anything about how they work or what my out of pocket obligation would be. SO LET ME REITERATE THE WORDS OF THEIR OWN INSURANCE SPECIALIST ... DON'T GO TO WHEATON EYE CLINIC FOR AN EYE EXAM!!! A month later, I made an appointment with Lasik Plus in Oakbrook with Dr. Horn and had a FABULOUS experience. When I first called to set up an appointment, the receptionist spoke with me for a good 5 minutes trying to figure out exactly what I was looking for and asking me all about both my health and vision insurance. They then researched my insurance at length, gave me a 15 minute in-person analysis with their insurance specialist and gave me 2 printouts of different options outlining every detail of the charges and insurance benefits prior to my procedure. Their insurance specialist even helped me find some ways to combine my health and vision benefits and did a 3-way phone call with BCBS and the end result was that I had my Lasik surgery 100% covered by my Health and Vision insurance so I walked out with brand new vision, paying $0 out of pocket. Everyone at Lasik Plus was friendly and informative and so very helpful ... the exact opposite of my experience with Wheaton Eye Clinic!!! read more

Took my 5 year old to his first eye appointment as required for kindergarten. I struggled with the decision on whether to see a pediatric specialist or take him where my husband and I go. I'm so glad we went with Dr. Kipp. All the associates were professional and worked well with my child. He got to watch a movie while the dilating drops worked. Then he got a token at the end for being a good patient to get a toy from a machine. They even gave one to the tag along brother. Such a great experience! read more

A while ago I woke up with a pink & swollen eyelid, and it just got more sore as the day went on. So I went to the Quick Care, where they just diagnosed me with pink eye and prescribed antibiotic drops. I didn't believe it was pink eye, having experienced it before, and told them there was no itchiness or gunk in my actual eye, it was just the eyelid that hurt. So instead, I made an appointment to see a real eye doctor at the Wheaton Eye Clinic. They got me in right away. I saw Dr. Voirin, and he knew immediately upon looking at me what the problem was, though he did a complete workup to be sure (it was a clogged duct at the base of an eyelash) He fixed me up right then and there. I've been back one other time, and again they got me in right away. Dr. Voirin is so friendly, he is willing to explain & answer all my questions, and makes sure I'm comfortable. I would definitely recommend him and the Wheaton Eye Clinic. read more

Definitely taking my family somewhere else... How do I start.... Every time you call to make an appointment you have to wait 15 minutes before any one helps you and after that it gets even worse the ladies that answer the phone are rude and unprofessional but I still went ahead and give it a try because it was located right in front of my son's school, when I called I explain that I wanted an appointment for my two kids and myself and the lady made all of them on the same day at the same time. When we arrived the waiting area was packed. My son was call first after waiting 30 minutes and then my daughter was call an hour later... To make the story short we expend nearly 4 1/2 in there, the stuff was rude, the eyewear is so overprice and the only reason Im leaving two stars is because Dr. Noha S. Ekdawi was amazing with my 3 yro daughter so sad that the people that works around her make her look bad. read more

When looking for Neuro Opthalmology I came across this place. I am on Medicaid so knew it was best to call first to make sure they took my insurance. The women in the insurance office said yes we take your insurance so I called to make an appointment. The women I spoke to when making the appointment was very nice until I gave my insurance information then the tone changed and was told I could only be seen with a referral from PCP. So went and say the PCP and got the referral and it was sent to them the next day. I then called the next day to scheduled the appointment asked if they had the referral and she said yes but was told that my insurance wasn't authorizing appointments. Called insurance and they had no record of anything being submitted and also told me they were in network so i should have no troubles. Called back to Wheaton 15 mins later and they all of a sudden couldn't find the referral and that I needed to speak to a Cheryl because she is the only person that deal with medicaid insurance. Was transferred to her and was put to voicemail...left a message. Two days later I had to call back to speak to her and after being transferred a few times got a hold of her. She knew my information and knew who I was and then told me that they are not taking new patients and didn't take my insurance. I told her I just called a week ago and was told you take my insurance. She wanted to know which person I talked to because they keep good phone records and questioned if I even called. They don't take my insurance and was very sorry for the wrong information I was given. After being given the run-around I called back my insurance to fine a new Neuro Opthalmology my insurance told me the closes to me was Wheaton Eye Clinic and they take my insurance. The moral of the story is if you want the run-around, poor customer service and lack of personal care you will be very happy with Wheaton Eye Clinic but if your anything less then wealthy with state-of-the-art insurance you may find your experence with them frustration, aggravating and awful. My experience with this clinic was extremely unpleasant. It began with having to set up an appointment with an extremely unfriendly and downright rude receptionist, who took at least 15 minutes to finally answer my phone call and when she did, treated me with no respect. My doctor himself was very nice, however, after being told it would take a week for my contacts to be ready and being forced to pay it all upfront at the time of my appointment, I never received a phone call telling me my contacts were ready. When I called today, 3 weeks later, I was told that my doctor never wrote down my contact order, and therefore I apparently never would have been given my contacts if I did not call about them. So they had no problem taking my $250 and never giving me what I was paying for. Definitely will not be going back to this place. read more
