I had VERY HIGH hopes after being recommended Wheaton Eye Clinic (and a "specialty doctor"), and just left feeling sorely disappointed. I was referred to Wheaton Eye Clinic by two of my other ophthalmologists after neither has been able to diagnose a 24-7 "rashy feeling" in my eye socket/corner of my eyes area. I have had this over a year and a half and while not painful, the continuous "chapped" feeling has diminished my quality of life. While I have had this feeling roughly the same amount of time I have had fibromyalgia, my rheumatologist is EMPHATIC that my condition must be "ocular", and is not indicative of fibromyalgia or any other auto-immune condition. I was referred to Dr. John Pak - I was joyfully told by one of my other eye care specialists that his credentials surpass that of regular ophthalmologists and that Dr. Pak is a "genius" in the area of eyes and "eye sockets", "he thinks outside the box" and that he is known to "brainstorm treatments for people", and "He'll be able to help your condition in some way!" I couldn't tell you how happy I was to hear this, as I thought FINALLY I am seeing somebody who will give me some answers! I was told to bring a list of my medicines and all of my previous eye drops. The front desk woman was VERY NICE, very friendly, very helpful. Sadly, this was about the best part of my visit. The waiting area is VERY LARGE, think a terminal at O'Hare airport. There had to be 50-75 people all waiting, and between 8-10 different employees all seemingly running around ragged calling people's names and getting them situated. You really had to pay attention for your name, and things just seemed chaotic - almost like a "mill". Finally, my name was called and a tech brought me into a VERY SMALL, cramped room. She asked me what was going on, and I tried to be very detailed and "time-frame oriented" with her about my condition - what it was, what it felt like, when it started, etc. Hard to explain, but the tech seemed frazzled and "rushed" (as if under the guise of - get them in, get them out, get to the next patient ASAP) about letting me explain everything. She wrote a few sentences into the system which were VERY GENERAL, and didn't really reflect key details which I felt were important about my condition. She told me I could explain further details to Dr. Pak, and he would look over all my info and converse better with me. About 20 minutes later, I was called into a regular patient room. Dr. Pak walks in, introduces himself, and asks me what he can do for me. I begin to try to explain everything that was going on (again starting from the beginning, as I feel detail is IMPORTANT), and Dr. Pak cut me off and said something to the effect of, "let's skip all the minor stuff and tell me what exactly is affecting you." I was kinda put off by this. Dr. Pak had a nice demeanor about it, but again I feel it is best for PATIENT-DOCTOR QUALITY TIME to explain FINITE details so they can best understand you, and then try to help you. Dr. Pak didn't seem to have the time or interest in listening to my several key specifics. After then giving Dr. Pak a condensed version of what was going on and him looking at my eyes after simply inserting some lubricating drops, Dr. Pak said, "I don't see anything, I don't know how I can help you." Dr. Pak never really looked at my records or previous doctors' notes (in the Northwestern system), nor my drops (which I was told to bring for him). I asked him a few more general questions and if we could "come up with at least some ideas on how to treat this" and he basically said "I don't know...I don't even have anybody I could recommend you to other than going back to your regular eye specialist and rheumatologist." Keep in mind, the same doctors that had no answers themselves, and suggested I see HIM. Needless to say, I left very disappointed. My time with Dr. Pak lasted MAYBE 6-7 minutes. While I appreciated his honesty, I still felt rushed and felt I did not have enough time to explain DETAILS as to what has been going on with me, or just time in general to sit and talk. It was really no different than how I felt rushed when the tech was quickly taking down my information in that small, cramped room. As for how I was told there would be "brainstorming" of ideas on treatments and what this condition may be, or his "thinking outside of the box", I felt none of that - and aside being told my condition is not ocular (keep in mind my rheumatologist says my condition "must be ocular"), I walked out with no better understanding of what is affecting me - or how to even treat it - than when I walked in. Not saying Dr. Pak isn't a great doctor and/or that Wheaton Eye Clinic isn't a great place; and WHILE I AM GRATEFUL that nothing of a serious nature was found, I still left feeling this visit was a waste of time and money for all parties involved. In fact, I actually received better insight from my previous ophthalmologists. read more

My mom was transferred by a medical vehicle from the hospital to Wheaton Eye. After the "usual" Wheaton Eye wait, my wheelchair mom was called by a tech to take an eye exam. There was no "hello," "how are you" or "do you need assistance.?" Just a "Can she get in the exam chair? I told the tech my mom was not able to transfer to the exam chair due to its height (she was at Marionjoy for five weeks due to a broken her back, was in intense pain and was wearing a back brace). At this point, tech directed my mom to stay in the wheelchair and just read the chart on the wall. My mom told the tech she could not see the eye chart. "You can't see the chart?" replied the tech. "No, I can't see the chart." AFter a few more minutes of "can you see the chart," the tech told us to leave and the doctor would call us back in later. Twenty minutes later, the doctor had me come in alone in and told me, "Your mother is blind." "No, she's not blind!" "She couldn't see anything on the chart." "My mom READS two romance novels a day!" I left the room and rolled my mom back in. The doctor then asked her if she could read the eye chart. She replied, "No. I don't have my glasses." The doctor passed his glasses to my mom and she read all the letters. Wheaton Eye can be very, very good. Get a staff member who is only there for the paycheck and it can be blindly bad. This day, patient care was sorely lacking; rather than asking questions of my mom, moving her wheelchair around, etc., the tech just wrote down that mother was blind. Patients, be warned. read more

I can't begin to describe what happened here. A botched cataract surgery led to months of care by a retinologist, numerous medications, assurances that this"was normal" , little or no follow up by the surgeon, and 2 inaccurate prescriptions which when I asked how that could happen, was told it was partially my fault. Called in to schedule an appointment for contact fitting .. get to the appointment a few days later, they tell me the doctor isn't in and that they specifically don't do contact fittings on that day? I took a full day off work to come to this appointment so at this point I'm pretty irritated, no one is apologetic. The scheduler won't own up to screwing up the appointment. She just tries scheduling another for me in a few weeks lol. I abruptly tell them once they share these details I'm no longer interested and don't need an appointment if that was the case. Two months later I get a bill in the mail stating I owe them over $100. I call in and the receptionist is immediately rude as soon as she picks up so I think oh great, this will end well. It didn't. Side note- this place is ran like a factory.. very cold and transactional. My eye doctor was pretentious af when we did talk and I couldn't help but just laugh. Unfortunately they will stay in business because they are able to fit people in so quickly. I wish others would take these reviews seriously to help show how terrible their service is. Waste of time and over $200. Took our daughter here a few months ago for an eye exam after she was complaining of vision impairment and headaches. Dr. Ekdawi abruptly dismissed our daughter in the middle of the eye exam as a kid that wanted to be "cool" by getting glasses like her friends. The headaches continued and we took her somewhere else to get a 2nd opinion. Needless to say, she now has glasses and was diagnosed with astigmatism. We will never come back here again. I had eye surgery and had difficulty focusing afterwards. When I returned for help, I was dismissed and told to see another doctor. I did return to see another doctor in the practice, but was told to make another appointment to see the surgeon. It wasn't up to him to tell me what happened. I did return to be told by the surgeon I shouldn't see another door for almost 2 years after the surgery. I'd be wasting my money. Unfortunately and despite reasonable expectations and fairness, I have had the WORST experience with the Wheaton Eye Clinic of ANY time I have received eye care services in my entire life. If you look for a factory-style approach to eye care with little respect for your needs, this is the place for you! To start, the check-in procedure is chaotic. There is a row of clerks sitting at a tall counter - all trying to avoid your gaze until one of them gives in and reluctantly agrees to help. Sometimes, there are so many people checking in that they have a person with a clipboard mingling at random with people walking in. Then after check-in, you sit in a very large waiting room. Two or three names may be called at the same time, so you have to be alert to make sure you see which person calls your name. And you may be called from any of four corners of the large room, so there is no advantage in sitting anywhere in particular. It can be hard to hear in that large room, so you have to be alert. On my first visit, I had a nurse who spoke broken English and who did NOT want to know my symptoms. She also did not know how to operate her computer system, so she stumbled around through it. For example, when I told her that my pharmacy was in Bolingbrook, she clicked on a pharmacy in Bowling Green - KENTUCKY! She also put down the optometrist that I have been seeing for many years, and who I trust implicitly! I had to help her use her computer system in order to finish my initial interview. The first ophthalmologist I saw botched the procedure and I had to return in less than a week. That first visit took about 90 minutes. In the past at other facilities, the same visit took less than 20 minutes. On my second visit, the nurse complained about the setup of the facility. The second ophthalmologist I saw was extremely arrogant. He barely had time to consider my symptoms and concerns and gave me zero follow-up instructions. When I tried to ask questions he told me, "I can only do one thing at a time," then he never gave me a chance to interact with him. It was clear that he wanted to treat me and get me out the door ASAP. When I asked about the cost, he complained, that he "hated dealing with that type of stuff." When my procedure was complete, I stopped at the checkout desk, identified myself, and asked if I needed to make a payment. The clerk told me that I wouldn't, and said that they would send me a bill, so I left. However, later that night, I got a call at home asking me to pay the bill in full. I have NEVER had that type of call - from ANY medical provider - in my ENTIRE life. However, knowing that I needed to pay, I agreed. I got out my card and tried to give the billing person my information. However, she wasn't ready - and kept being rude to me for several minutes. What the F is wrong with this outfit? read more

I was misdiagnosed 3 times by the Wheaton Eye Clinic. 3 times I was told I had viral pink eye and there was nothing that I could do but wait for it to go away and possibly reoccur within the year. It never went away. I happened to go to a vision works for new glasses and the doctor there immediately asked me about the rosacea on my eyes. I had never heard this before but I knew I had rosacea on my face. These are inextricably linked. This doctor referred me to a specialist and I was immediately prescribed eye gel and oral meds that treated the condition instantly. I would have thought the doctors at the Wheaton eye clinic would have been able to diagnose this condition but they were not even close. read more

And now I'm trying to schedule a surgery for my elderly father who has had an appt with the eye Dr and a preliminary appt with the surgeon 6 days ago. The surgeon, Dr Patel hasn't even put in the order for the surgery. I have called twice and they send her reminders to put the order in. How long does my 96 year old dad have to wait? His condition is very irritating, every blink scratches his cornea. You can't speak to anyone but scheduling. I would like to personally recommend Dr. Sung. I potentially had glaucoma and I have a serious eye phobia. He was very gentle and made sure that when I have to return for my follow up in 6 months (no glaucoma now, thank God) that he personally will be the one to work with me as he was able to coax my eyes open for the tests and even able to easily get drops in. Dr. Michael Andreoli is a wonderful surgeon and has the best bedside manner. I was somewhat scared of my upcoming surgery until I spoke to Dr. Andreoli. The surgery was everything he explained to me. I did not have any pain during or after surgery. Dr. Andreoli's bedside manner is awesome. He made me feel comfortable and that I was in good hands. He explained things to me in terms I understood. He answered every questions with calm and sweet answers. Everything he told me was right on. His staff both in the Wheaton office for surgery and the Naperville office for follow up were exceptional. Very friendly and very interested in my comfort and care. I would highly recommend Dr. Andreoli and Wheaton Eye Clinic to family and friends. Thank you for making this surgery as easy as it could be. I had cataract surgery on both my eyes. Wheaton eye clinic walked me through the whole process. The facility staff were friendly, all directions were given at the facility pre surgery appointment and follow up phone messages were made right at the time you needed to be starting your eye drops as a reminder. The Dr even called the day before to say he'd see me the next day at the surgery and he called again after surgery to make sure things were ok. (Who does that anymore?). A most professional clinic and a great example of what health care should be like. Highly recommend. read more

Wheaton Eye Clinic is 5 minutes from my home. I originally came into my first experience through my daughter who was premature and had to be seen by Dr. KIPP in the NICU. I can only express good things about my experience at that time 7 years ago. My daughter still has to have her vision checked yearly and we continue to see Dr. Ekdowi at WEC. She, too, is a wonderful pediatric eye doctor with whom my daughter has come to trust. Dr. Ekdowi is very good with children and knowledgeable as well. I have seen several other doctors whose expertise I have trusted. I find no issues or problems with front desk service. Thankfully I have always had good customer service and have never needed to wait beyond 15 minutes. Perhaps one occasion the wait was longer then acceptable. Fraudulent billing practices. We should have looked at Wheaton Eye Clinic's ratings prior to scheduling appointments. My 8 year old daughter was charged for an exam she didn't have, instead of being charged appropriately for a routine eye exam. The clinic also documented a "family history" of eye issues in their insurance submission that don't exist. After contacting the billing department, I was told, "if you want a routine eye exam, you should go to Walmart or Target. Our doctors are MDs and we are Specialist." The other comment was, "we billed you the same way last year and you didn't have a problem with it." Wheaton Eye Clinic is engaged in fraudulent billing practices and I'd encourage anyone experiencing the same issues to contact their insurance company as soon as possible. For Medicare patients, I'd encourage you to file a complaint as a whistleblower to have all records thoroughly reviewed. It appears as though they're over billing and hoping patients don't catch on to their practices. Most patients will not catch on, if they don't have a copay for their visit. Fortunately, I noticed the issue since we don't have a copay for routine eye exams, but we do have one for diagnostic procedures. read more

Do not come here! Their billing is beyond shady! I was referred here by my eye dr after being diagnosed with keratoconus. I was told by the specialist at Wheaton Eye Center that glasses nor contacts would help me until I had a procedure called cornea collagen cross linking. I then was told to go over to surgery scheduling and the billing department. I was told by the billing department that the procedure was $2000 per eye and that was after insurance. I scheduled the procedure and went home to follow up with my insurance company, UHC. They told me Wheaton Eye Center was in Network as was the dr performing the procedure and that they did cover cornea collagen cross linking and my out of pocket cost should be $220 per eye, NOT $2000. Big difference! I called Wheaton Eye Center and spoke to the billing department. It was then that I was told they don't submit claims for this procedure to insurance. I asked why, my insurance will cover the procedure, and both the dr and Wheaton Eye Center are in network. I was then put on hold so the girl could ask her manager. She returned and said that's just their policy. I called my insurance company back and they emailed me a list of 12 in network drs who perform this procedure. I am cancelling my surgery with WEC and going to a Dr who actually submits the claims to your insurance rather then trying to rob patients who are just want to be able to see! read more

I don't know why we came back here. Dr. vitali or whatever her name is has zero respect for her patients time. AFTER we sat for two hours we were told the appointment would take two hours because it was an "emergency visit" not sure how an emergency visit that was made 3 days ago is considered an "emergency". I originally went to Hauser-Ross, as it is just down the road from my home. Unfortunately, the attitude of the doctor there, well, let's just say he did not instill confidence. At Wheaton Eye, I saw Dr. Sandor, who was recommended by my eye doctor when I needed cataract surgery. He & the clinic were great. I was treated very kindly & professionally. After my surgery I was so surprised to get a call from Dr. Sandor that evening, checking to see if everything was all right. After my second eye was done, I heard from Dr. Sandor that evening & a nurse the following day. They took very good care of me, my eyes are almost 20/20 & I cannot say enough good things about this clinic. read more

Visited Wheaton eye clinic today for the first time in years to see if my prescription needed to be updated. Staff was unfriendly, the receptionist who charge me my co-pay and let me know that I would be charged an additional $40 was dismissive and irritable when I asked what the charge would be for and why. I had to wait for over half an hour for a scheduled appointment. On top of that, my main reason for this visit was to update all of my prescriptions, contacts included, however when I finally saw the doctor he said that that would need to be a separate appointment. This place is overly expensive, staff is rude and doesn't want to answer any questions which I find unacceptable for patient care. The whole thing felt like a money grab, and they told me that I needed to come back next year even though I'm 24 have healthy eyes and my prescription was just updated. I have been loyally going to the Wheaton Eye Clinic for a while now. When you have bad eyesight like mine (-10....yes negative 10 in both eyes with astigmatism) where you go for your eyes is really important. I live downtown, but am willing to drive the distance to get my contact lenses fitting done by Barbara Andreoli. She is so patient and has worked with me through many visits/and years to find the right fit for my eyes. I had basically tried every contact lenses (Hard, Toric, Soft) and nothing was working. Instead of giving up she kept having me try new ones and we finally found one that worked. I love my focus dailies!!! True being able to see 20/20 without lenses would be even better, but now at least I have a pair of contacts I can wear all day without irritation. I also have to mention the service. Everyone is so friendly and I love they remember you even though you only come once a year. Her assistant Tracy is always so helpful and gives me a few extra lenses on the spot to hold me over until my shipment comes in. My appointments have always started on time and they even let me know what can be covered with health insurance (since my eyesight is so bad). The honesty here is also much appreciated. I went probably 10 years ago for a consultation for Lasik eye surgery. I was told that other doctors might perform it on me, but the physician I met with wouldn't because he said my cornea was too thin and he was for sure I would have halo's and not enjoy the benefits of the surgery. Instead of trying to make money at any cost the doctor put my safety first. You only have one pair of eyes and the only place I trust with mine is the Wheaton Eye Clinic. read more

My husband was mis-diagnosed 2x at the Wheaton location. He was told by the ophthalmologist that he just needed new glasses after his first exam. Got the new glasses and he still could'nt see well. We went again to see the doctor and was told he just needed to get used to the glasses. Went to Dupage Medical Group, Dr. LIsa Wohl, and was immediately referred to a retinal specialist. He has a macular hole in his left eye. He needs surgery to correct this. How could this have been missed 2 times? They are in a hurry to rush people through and don't take the time to listen or really evaluate the patients. These mistakes can cost people their sight. A puppy mill! read more

Top notch. I've never tried to get glasses for myself or kids here, but I can say that if you have serious eye problems this is THE place to go. They have a huge staff covering specialities of every kind. In my case, I had a torn retina in each eye over a two year period. Dr. Richard Gieser (son of the founder and a retina specialist) dealt with the problems swiftly and effectively. Also, I was seen fairly promptly each time I had an appointment. Public service announcement: if you notice new "floaters" in your visual field or see flashes when you shift your glance, and ESPECIALLY if you see "shadows" around the edge, get it checked out IMMEDIATELY. A day's delay can make the difference between fairly low-key treatment (laser or cold-probe) and surgery. And an untreated retina tear WILL lead to retinal detachment and eventual blindness. I was 47 the first time this happened. My only complaint about the clinic is that the second time this happened to me, the phone staff did not recognize that my (mild) symptoms demanded immediate intervention. Dr. Gieser gently chided me that if I had insisted on seeing him immediately, I could have avoided a second round of surgery. Don't let the prospect of surgery scare you. Dr. Gieser did the surgery out-patient; it took about an hour and there was no discomfort. The discomfort comes at home when you feel like you have a brick in your eye for several days, but it passes and it beats going blind. And yes, "Gieser" is pronounced the way you think, and no, he's not, but yes, you tend to see them in the lobby. ;) PS: While I was scheduling my first surgery with the lady in charge of same, I heard a page over the PA for "Seymour Clearly". This isn't my regular eye place. But I had to come here to get a lump removed from my eyelid. I saw Dr. Pak, who I believe is a plastic surgeon and an eye doctor. He is amazing! I didn't even feel the stitches he put in my eyelid, nor did I need any painkillers. And once the stitches dissolved there was no scarring!!! Even my regular eye doctor was impressed with Dr. Pak's work. He's one of the few doctors that performs this kind of surgery in the Chicago area. Aside from very skilled hands, he takes his time to answer all my questions. I'm very much a hypochondriac, so that's a pretty big deal for me. If your child needs glasses this is the place to go! They have a reasonably priced package which includes frames, lenses and most importantly a 1 YEAR GUARANTEE. If the frames break or the lenses are scratched, they will be replaced free of charge during that year. My son broke his frames AND scratched his glasses and both were replaced without question. You can walk into the Optical Department anytime they are open and they will adjust your frames free of charge. The best time to go is on Thursday evenings. They are open until 8 pm and they are not busy at all. First thing in the morning is swamped since they have lots of seniors that go there and are there right when they open. I only game this 4 stars, since I don't like the waiting process. When you walk in, you give them your name and then you sit and wait. You have no idea how long it will take. I would like to see a number system like the deli, so you have some idea how much longer you will be sitting around. At least the magazines are current. read more

I've been coming to this office for 10 years. They are always very thorough with the eye exam and all the other exams for eye pressure, etc. I've never felt rushed, or sensed any impatience, even when my eyes do not want to cooperate. They are a large, very busy practice. I appreciate they don't try to waste time feigning interest in small talk with the patients. Especially when I'm still in the waiting area, along with many others who are waiting to be examined. They get down to the business of examining and treating my eyes and that's the only reason I'm there. I don't understand all the 1 star reviews, but know people are more likely to leave a review when it's negative. I've had nothing but positive experiences in 10 years. read more

Do yourself a favor and find another eye clinic. I just left there after waiting AN HOUR AND A HALF for my appointment. I left - I couldn't wait any longer, I had to go back to work. I also stood at the front desk for 5 minutes waiting to tell someone I was leaving so I didn't get charged for the appt because there was only 1 person working behind the front desk and 4 people in line to check in/out! I called same day to get an appointment after I woke up with an extremely red, irritated eye. They got me right in and I was impressed from the moment I walked in the door. The facility is large, clean and well thought out. They have a kids area that kept my two little ones well occupied. Dr. Janet Lee was thorough and efficient diagnosing my scratched cornea. Little wait time to be seen, even as an "emergency". They took care of billing my insurance and explained that since it was medically necessary, they could bill my medical insurance, which was nice since I don't have vision insurance. read more
